Art Lesson for 4th and 5th Grade Objective: Students will be able to understand line by drawing a succulent planter and adding pattern within the drawing. Students will be able to show their understanding of variety by creating an artwork that has interesting patterns, shapes, and colors. Standards: 1.1.5.D.1, 1.3.5.D.1, 1.3.5.D.3, 1.3.5.D.4, 1.3.5.D.5, 1.3.5.D.2, 1.4.5.B.1 Materials Needed: White Paper (any kind) Crayons Videos to watch: Day 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SBFpax5N10 Day 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAh1J3Ljj-M Time: 40 minutes for 2 days Directions: Day 1: Watch video about succulent and look at Succulent Handout for information on succulents. Think of how you would design your own succulents in a planter/vase. Use the Succulent Planter Drawing Guide and follow steps 1-6 on any available paper. Use pencil or crayon in order to follow each step using lines to create a succulent and planter/vase. Day 2: Watch pattern video. On your succulent paper, create patterns on your planter/vase using crayons. Continue to color your succulents with crayons. Assessment Checklist: Did the student draw a succulent planter that takes up most of the space on their paper? Did the student add variety to their artwork with pattern and color?
