Dear Parents,

Welcome to a new school year.

The Sacred Heart School Faculty and Staff are committed to providing a quality Catholic education for each of our students.  We strive to instill in our students a sense of responsibility to be of service to God and neighbor and to work academically to their full potential.

I hope this handbook will answer many of your questions about what happens at Sacred Heart School.  If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please do not hesitate to call us at 847-446-0005, email me, or stop by the school.  Positive communication between home and school is essential.  We will do everything possible to keep you informed.  Look for the weekly newsletter emailed to you on Wednesdays.  In addition, there is an info-blast on our website (www.shwschool.org) under Blogs.

Please discuss the contents of this handbook with your child.  It is most beneficial when parents and students understand our procedures and school policies.

We have approximately 190 students enrolled in preschool through 8th grade. We teach religion, language arts, math, science, social studies, Spanish, technology integration, STEAM, art, music, and P.E.   A learning specialist, reading specialist, math specialist, speech pathologist, and counselor offer services to those in need.

Sacred Heart School is blessed to have an exceptional teaching staff.  Teachers and assistants use a variety of materials and techniques in order to meet the spiritual, academic, and social needs of the students.  All teachers are encouraged to try innovative ideas and materials.

During this school year, we ask that God be with each of us and help us to keep our minds and hearts open to His many gifts of love.

Sincerely,

Ms. Kristen [email protected]

time.

A grade will be split when a reasonable number has been enrolled and various factors have been weighed.  When there are more applicants than there are spaces available, a waiting list is established according to the order in which the applications are received. Exceptions to this policy shall only be considered under special or extraordinary circumstances.  This consideration shall be made at the discretion of the Pastor, the Principal, and the School Board.

Sacred Heart School endeavors to educate students within the limits of the school's programs and facilities.  Children with severe learning disabilities or behavior disorders may not be able to be adequately serviced. The school facilities are in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Sacred Heart School admits students of any race, color, sex, nationality, and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to the students. This also applies to the administration of educational policies, athletic programs, and other school-administered programs.

AFTER-SCHOOL CAREThe Bridge Program is for 4 year old Junior Kindergarten students from 1:30 until 3:00 pm Monday through Friday. Relaxation and play times are provided. Information on fees is available at the office. It is staffed by either a teacher or a teacher assistant.

After-school care is available on school days through the Three O'Clock Club.  The hours are from 3:10 until 6:00 P.M, and beginning at 1:30pm on early dismissal Thursdays.  Play and study times are provided.  The parent must sign up for the service on a first come, first serve basis.  Reservations are made one month at a time (a calendar is e-mailed) or at least 24 hours in advance. This is to ensure the proper number of adult supervisors.  Information on fees is available at the office.  It is staffed by teachers and/or assistants.

All handbook and school rules apply to all school-sponsored events, even those activities occurring off-campus.

APPOINTMENTS WITH PRINCIPAL AND/OR FACULTYThe school office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.   The Principal is available to discuss any concerns.  Please call/email for an appointment.

If you wish to meet with a teacher, contact the teacher by writing a note, emailing, or calling the school secretary, who will connect you with that teacher’s voicemail.

Parent-Teacher ConferencesParent-teacher conferences for parents of all students are formally held in November. Parental participation is expected. If there are questions or concerns at any time of the year, please call the school or write the teacher for an appointment. Parent-teacher conferences are also formally offered in March.

Grievance ProcedureDifferences of opinion may occasionally occur between a teacher and a parent. The parent and teacher should meet first to discuss the concern. If this proves unsatisfactory, the concerned parties should contact the principal to schedule a meeting to further discuss the concern. In the case of more serious disagreements between parents and the administration concerning administrative decisions, a grievance may be filed through the Archdiocesan Office of Conciliation and Arbitration.

ASBESTOS AWARENESSIn 1986, Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). That law requires all schools, kindergarten through twelfth grade, to be inspected and identify and asbestos-containing building materials. The law further requires the development of a Management Plan, based upon the findings of the inspection, which outlines our intent in controlling the potential for exposure to asbestos fibers in our schools.

In the past, asbestos was used extensively in building materials because of its insulating and fire retarding capabilities. Virtually any building built before the late 1970’s contains at least some asbestos in pipe insulation and structural fireproofing. We too have buildings that contain asbestos material. The primary concerns arise when these materials begin to deteriorate or become damage.

Throughout the years our school has been inspected regularly and some asbestos containing materials were identified in our building. The materials are distributed in various locations and include floor tile glue, pipe insulation and mechanical areas not readily accessible to building occupants or students.

Our school’s Inspection Report and Management Plan outlines in detail the methods used to maintain the materials in a safe manner. In addition, as required by law, appropriate school staff members have been trained to administer this program. A copy of the inspection report and the management plan is on file at your local school office for review if you so desire.

ATTACKS ON SCHOOL PERSONNELUpon receipt of a written complaint from any school personnel, the appropriate school administrator for a private school shall report all incidents of battery committed against teachers, teacher personnel, administrative personnel or educational support personnel to the local law

3

enforcement authorities immediately after the occurrence of the attack.  The school administrator also must notify the Illinois State Police (ISP) within 3 days of each incident through the School Incident Reporting System (SIRS).

ATTENDANCEEvery student is required to attend school daily and to be on time. If your child is sick, please email or call the school office anytime in the morning prior to 8:45 A.M. to report your child’s absence. Homework assignments are posted on the teacher’s blog and/or calendar by 4pm.

If books or papers are needed, please call the office to indicate with whom the homework will be sent OR if it is to be left on the table outside the office after 3:10 for parent pick up. Homework is also posted on the teachers’ blogs.

If sick, a student has the number of days absent to make up missed work. If you are planning a vacation, schoolwork can be accessed through the teacher’s blog. The student and parent will work with the teacher(s) to get the missing work completed in a timely manner

CELL PHONESWhen calling home, use of the school phone is always required by students during the school day. If, however, you feel your child needs a cell phone at school these are the rules during school hours:

Cell phones must be turned off when in the school building during the school day (8am until 3:10pm).

Cell phones of junior high students will be turned in to homeroom teachers each day during homeroom where they will be locked up for safekeeping until the end of the school day.

If we have a signed form from parents stating that their student has a cell phone, we will assume the student has the cell phone with them each day and will expect it to be turned in each morning.  If the student does not have their cell phone on a certain day, it is the parent’s responsibility to email the homeroom teacher to let them know not to expect the cell phone that day.  If no email is received by 8:20am, we will expect to collect the cell phone.

Cell phones will be returned at the end of the day, by the homeroom teacher, after the last period class.  Phones may not be used until 3:10.

Should administration become aware of a cell phone in a locker, a backpack or a student’s pocket, it will be confiscated and a parent will be required to retrieve the phone from administration. Depending on the severity and frequency of the infraction, other consequences may be applied at the discretion of the administration.

CHILD ABUSEThe Illinois Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act mandates that school personnel promptly report alleged or suspected child abuse and/or neglect to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) when the alleged abuser is a parent, guardian, relative or other caretaker who has some responsibility for the child’s welfare at the time of the abuse or neglect. This includes professionals such as teachers who are responsible for the care of the child.

CONCEALED CARRY ACTIn July, 2013, Illinois passed the Firearm Concealed Carry Act. Under the law, even individuals with a permit to carry concealed weapons cannot carry such weapons into schools. Accordingly Sacred Heart School has posted a conspicuous sign featuring a handgun in black ink with a red circle around it and a diagonal slash across the handgun. These signs are approved by the Illinois State Police to designate that no concealed weapons will be permitted on the premises. The signs do not reflect official school policy, but instead signify that the law does not permit concealed weapons on any school facility.

Just as we are deeply committed to your child’s spiritual and educational development, we are also committed to your child’s safety and security.

CURRICULUMThe core academic program includes religion, language arts (reading, writing, spelling, and vocabulary), mathematics, science, and social studies.  Other classes include Spanish, STEAM/technology, physical education, music, and art.  Health topics are covered in self-contained class homerooms, science, PE, and religion classes. DISASTER PLANSFire, tornado, and lockdown drills are conducted periodically.  Detailed escape plans are posted in each classroom. Students are instructed to stay with their teacher.  In the event of a disaster, a process of gathering siblings will be initiated after all students are accounted for.  After the police and/or fire department have given their permission, releasing the children to the parents will begin. Parents will need to sign out their child/ren.

DISCIPLINE - BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONSThe goal of the Sacred Heart School faculty and staff is to provide a safe and positive learning environment, which supports Christian moral excellence. The teachers and staff are ready to meet those expectations by helping to develop respectful, responsible, and cooperative students. Every child at Sacred Heart School deserves to achieve high academic standards. The best way to ensure this goal is to create an environment where learning is paramount and disruptions to the goal of academic excellence are minimal.

Learning is directly related to a predictable, structured environment. By providing a cohesive code of conduct (The Viking Code) for all students, the goal of academic and Christian moral excellence becomes attainable because behavioral expectations are clearly defined. At all times, we expect Sacred Heart students to be Respectful, Responsible, and Cooperative.

The Viking Code describes in further detail what these expectations look like in each area of the school.

Reward SystemWhen students in JK-5th grade are caught exhibiting these behaviors and going above and beyond these expectations, they will be rewarded with Viking Bucks. The Viking Bucks will contribute to whole-class rewards, which will be determined by the teachers and students. We know Sacred Heart students are capable of meeting our high expectations, and we use Viking Bucks to reward them for doing so.

Courtesy CatchersIn an effort to highlight students’ good manners throughout the day, Courtesy Catchers will be awarded to those who exhibit these behaviors. All the Courtesy Catchers will be displayed on the bulletin board in the hallway by the locker rooms. Additionally, each month a few of these students will be chosen to be recognized immediately after Mass for their good deeds.

Social MediaSocial Media, while often utilized outside the school day, can come into play with discipline matters at school. Please note the following information about what can and cannot be asked of a student during a social media investigation.

The school may conduct and investigation or require a student to cooperate in an investigation if there is sufficient evidence to suggest the student’s social network account violates the school’s disciplinary policy.

The school may require the student to share content in the course of such an investigation.

However, the school may not request or require a student to provide a password or other related account information in order to gain access to the student’s account or profile on a social networking website.

Consequences: Failure to meet the expectations outlined in the Viking Code will result in a consequence. Consequences vary according to the student's age and the magnitude of the behavior. As outlined below parents will be contacted for repeated or severely inappropriate behaviors, and parent-teacher conferences will be scheduled. Consequences for each grade are listed below.

Grades K-2: Teacher will talk with student about inappropriate behavior Loss of classroom privileges 5-10 minute time out from play area Loss of recess Parent contacted via note, e-mail, and/or phone call when there are three infractions A parent conference with the principal and teacher will be called if the

Academic: Each student athlete is responsible for his/her schoolwork and academic achievements while participating in a sport. Each student must maintain a “C” or better in every subject. If these standards are not met, students will have ten days to meet eligibility requirements. If, at the end of the ten-day probation period, the student athlete does not improve his/her grade situation, participation shall be suspended until eligibility requirements are met.

Conduct: Each student athlete is expected to maintain a good behavior record in school. If a student-athlete incurs two detentions, he/she will be prohibited from playing in their next regularly scheduled athletic event. Athletes must also show respect for their coaches, teammates, opponents and referees. Poor sportsmanship, physical altercation or use of profanity can lead to suspension from the team.

Attendance: A student athlete who is ill and/or misses school shall not participate that same day in any team’s practice or game. Unexcused absences from practice may result in reduced playing time and future participation in that sport. The amount of reduced playing time shall be determined by the coach.

BULLYING POLICYAs Catholics we believe in the dignity and respect of each individual created in the image of God. Bullying is contrary to Gospel values and has no place in the Catholic school community.

Bullying• includes, but not limited to any intentional, repeated, hurtful act or conduct (physical, verbal,

All members of the Catholic school community, including parents/guardians, teachers, staff, and administrators, are expected to work together to prevent bullying and promote Gospel values in a Christ centered environment.  Students are expected to participate in age appropriate educational programs developed by the school that address bullying and teach respect for all.

Administrative ResponsibilitiesThe Fifth Commandment calls us to foster the physical, spiritual, emotional, and social well-being of self and others.  United States Catholic Catechism for Adults, page 389.

Children are unable to eliminate acts of bullying or harassment without adult support, guidance, and intervention.  Therefore, school personnel have a responsibility to see that• all allegations and incidents of bullying are taken seriously• parent/guardian and/or student reports of bullying are addressed immediately• written documentation is prepared and maintained by the school on the Bullying Complaint

Report Form

School personnel will also see that appropriate disciplinary consequences are applied to the offending student(s).  The following procedures are followed: When disciplinary action is taken against student(s) as a result of a bullying complaint,

documentation should indicate what happened and what action was taken Written documentation of the complaint must be placed in the student’s file, as would

documentation of other disciplinary action involving a student Whenever a bullying complaint is made by or on behalf of student(s), the school must place

the record of what action was taken in the student’s file.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIESA variety of extracurricular activities are offered at each grade level.  Some of the available activities are described below. Please note that if a student is absent from school, he/she will not participate in any extracurricular activities that day.

Student CouncilThe Student Council provides communication with the administration, develops school spirit, aids in school functions, promotes cooperation between the student body and faculty, and provides a means for developing effective Catholic citizens and leaders. Offices include President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Spirit, Religious Affairs, Technology, and Publicity.  5th-8th grade students vote in a spring election to elect officers for the following year. In the fall, class representatives are elected. Good behavior and a C average are to be maintained throughout the year.

After School EnrichmentAfter school enrichment classes are offered to the students periodically throughout the year. Classes offered vary each year, but typical offerings include art, science, dance, chess, and cooking.

Sports Program:   Various sports are available for Sacred Heart students in grades 5-8. The athletic fee charged, which pays for coaches and referees, uniforms, and equipment, varies by sport.

Academics: Each student must maintain a “C” or better in every subject in order to participate in athletics. If these standards are not met, students will have ten days to meet eligibility requirements. Athletes must also show respect for their coaches, teammates, opponents and referees. Poor sportsmanship, physical altercation or use of profanity can lead to suspension from the team

Attendance: A student-athlete who is ill and misses school shall not participate that same day in any team’s practice or game. Unexcused absences from practice may result in reduced playing time and future participation in that sport. The amount of reduced playing time shall be determined by the coach.

FIELD TRIPSField trips are financed through the activity fee. Field trips are to have an educational value to them.  Teachers who wish to conduct field trips are to present their request to the Principal for approval.  Any outdoor trip is to have a ratio of one adult per ten students.  For the junior kindergarten and kindergarten, the ratio may be smaller.

Prior to a field trip, a permission slip is to be sent home explaining the nature of the trip, means of transportation, and activities involved.  Permission slips must be signed by the parent or guardian and returned to school prior to the trip in order for the student to attend. A student may be withheld from making the field trip if the classroom teacher and the principal feel his/her behavior has not been appropriate.

When additional parent supervision is needed, room parents will assist the teacher in obtaining chaperones. Only adults may accompany students on a field trip; younger siblings may not join.

Bus transportation to and from the field trip is required, unless the location is within walking distance. Arrangement for buses will be made through the office.

FINANCES/FUNDRAISINGTuition and fees cover only 60% of the annual cost of educating a child at Sacred Heart School. The balance of Sacred Heart School's operating budget depends primarily on the generosity of the Sacred Heart Parish and School community.  The purpose of this section is to briefly describe Sacred Heart School's primary fundraising programs.

Nite LitesNite Lites is a festive fundraiser hosted by Sacred Heart and held in April. It is Sacred Heart's largest annual fundraiser and is important to the parish, both as an economic and a community-building event.  The event has raised in excess of $250,000 in recent years, covering approximately 20% of the operating budget of the school.  Nite Lites provides a wonderful opportunity to become involved and to build lasting friendships in the parish and school community.

Because of its importance to our financial condition and the preservation of affordable tuition, each Sacred Heart School family is expected to volunteer time and resources toward Nite Lites. Attending the event, and volunteering in both the preparation for and execution of the event are included in this expectation.  Many families find the time spent volunteering for Nite Lites to be

16

rich in rewards of closeness within the parish community.

P.A.S.S. A defining feature of Sacred Heart School is that our children are instructed by talented and caring teachers who share the values of our faith and our families.  This feature is an important part of what separates Sacred Heart School from the public schools in our community. However, because the Chicago Archdiocese stipulates salary levels for teachers at parish schools, our teachers are paid significantly less than teachers in the local public schools. Since 1984, the purpose of the P.A.S.S. (Parents' Assisted Salary Supplement) program has been to permit Sacred Heart School to somewhat narrow this salary gap.  Through the generosity of Sacred Heart School parents and friends, P.A.S.S. has been instrumental in the recruitment and retention of talented teachers.

This year, the School Board again seeks voluntary, tax-deductible contributions to P.A.S.S. from Sacred Heart School's parents.  In order for P.A.S.S. to be successful, it is necessary that every Sacred Heart School family contribute to P.A.S.S. Each family is encouraged to contribute $1,000 per child in grades K-8 and $500 per PS and JK child. If this amount is not feasible, please know that a donation of any amount is not only important but vital to the success of this program. Our goal is participation by 100% of Sacred Heart families. Thank you for your support of this important program!

Parent’s Association (PA)As a parent of a Sacred Heart student, you are automatically a member of Parent’s Association (PA). Annual family dues are $50 per family and help support the many PA programs. The PA also receives a percentage of sales from uniform items purchased through Land's End and Amazon Smile. Fundraising profits contribute to the school's Scholarship Fund, classroom material gifts, special assemblies, enrichment activities, family events and numerous miscellaneous school projects.   The PA also organizes a special lunch program for the students and faculty throughout the year.

EndowmentSacred Heart was one of the first Catholic Schools in the Chicago area to establish an Endowment Fund. The goal of the Endowment Fund is to provide a permanent and predictable source of financial support for Sacred Heart School.   Through the generosity of parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, and other supporters of Sacred Heart School, the Endowment Fund currently has an invested value of approximately $2 million.  Although most of the Endowment Fund's earnings are reinvested, a modest amount is set aside to support Sacred Heart's marketing and development activities.  Tax-deductible contributions to the Endowment Fund are welcome and greatly appreciated.

MiscellaneousFinally, there are a variety of fees that may be requested during the year that will vary with each child's grade level and extracurricular involvement. Primary examples are JTP and athletic fees to cover team athletic participation. Student Council will also host student-run fundraisers during the school year.

HEALTH FORMS, IMMUNIZATION, MEDICATION AND ILLNESSPhysical, Dental and Eye ExamsIllinois State Law requires that all preschool, junior kindergarten, kindergarten, and 6th grade children have a complete physical examination. All kindergarten, 2nd grade, and 6th grade

children must have a complete dental examination. All children entering Kindergarten and any children transferring from out of state must have an eye examination report filled out by an optometrist or an ophthalmologist.  Completed health and dental forms must be on file in the school office by September 1. Each year all students involved in the after school sports program are to have a current physical on file in the school office. A current physical must be submitted before training for any sport begins.

ImmunizationState law requires that every child who is admitted to school must be immunized against German measles, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio myelitis, mumps, hepatitis B, and haemophilus influenza type B (Hib). If a child is not in compliance with these state regulations by October 15, he/she will be excluded from school until these requirements are met. Beginning Fall 2015 all 6th Graders will be required to have the meningococcal vaccine.

Communicable DiseasesPlease notify school immediately when your child has a communicable disease, such as strep throat, fifth disease, pink eye, measles, mumps, chicken pox, or head lice.  In order to heighten parent awareness a notice will be sent home.  A child should be without fever for 24 hours before returning to school.  Concerning head lice, the child is to be “nit” free before returning to school.

MedicationsAdministration: State law forbids school personnel from administering any type of medication to students unless the school has the student’s current and complete Medication Authorization Form approved and signed by the parent and physician.

Self-Administration: A student may self-administer medication at school if so ordered by his/her licensed prescriber per student’s current and completed Medication Authorization Form. Students who suffer from asthma, allergies or other conditions that require the immediate use of medication shall be permitted to carry such medication and to self-administer such medication without supervision by school personnel only if the school has on file a current and completed Medication Authorization Form.

All medication brought to school must be in the original package or an appropriately labeled container which includes the following:

•student’s name•prescription number•medication name/dosage•administration routine and/or other directions

Medication is not to be with the student, but rather in the health room/school office. Inhalers and epi-pens are an exception. Medication should be delivered to school by a parent or guardian, not by a student.

AllergiesIf your child has an identified allergy, please see the Food Allergy Management Protocol on our website, at https://4.files.edl.io/e4f8/10/18/18/170410-1acfd561-70c7-4106-9a2f-0d04f7649d24.pdf

IllnessNo child with an elevated temperature will be kept at school.  Any sign of communicable

diseases, such as lice or chicken pox, will be reported to parents, and the child will be sent home.  If your child gives other evidence of being sick, the parents will be called and informed of the symptoms.

Vision and hearing screenings are conducted annually at school by the Winnetka Public School nurse.

HOMEWORKHomework is an extension of the learning that takes place in school.   Homework is given daily in grades 4 through 8.  Students in grades 4 and 5 should expect to spend about one hour on homework each night. Grades 6 through 8 should expect to have about 2 hours of work per night.  If a student does not have an assignment due the following day, time should be spent reviewing class notes, practicing math facts, studying vocabulary or spelling, etc. Silent reading is expected on a daily basis.

If your child is sick, please call the school office in the morning by 8:45 am to report your child’s absence. Homework is posted on the blog. For junior high students homework is on the blog, the calendar, and the shared folder in Google docs.

If you are planning a vacation with your child, know that schoolwork is posted on each teacher’s blog, which may be accessed through the school website. Teachers will work with students and parents to get work completed in a timely manner.  When your child returns there may be additional assignments. Younger students may be asked to keep a travel journal.

LOCKERSA locker is issued to each student at the beginning of the school year. Students are expected to keep their lockers clean and not abuse them.  No locks are to be used.  The school is not responsible for valuables left in lockers.

All property of the school, including student desks and lockers, as well as contents, may be opened, searched or inspected at any time without notice.LOST AND FOUNDClothing, lunch boxes, and other items found on the school campus are placed in the Lost and Found Box in the kitchen. Money, jewelry, and other valuables are sent to the office. Students may claim them with proper description and identification.

NITE LITESNite Lites is Sacred Heart's annual gala fundraiser. Each family is expected to contribute to this community effort. Proceeds are used in the operating budget of the school year, helping to keep tuition costs down.  Nite Lites is held on a Saturday in April.

PARENT/GUARDIAN CONDUCTThe Catholic Church and SHS recognize parents as the primary educators of their children. The education of students at Sacred Heart School is a partnership between parents and the school. If, in the opinion of the principal, that partnership is irretrievably broken, the school reserves the right to require the parent/guardian to withdraw his/her child/ren from the school, or to refuse to accept registration for the next school year.

Unacceptable behaviors include, but are not limited to: harassment, verbal abuse, assault or threats to the faculty, administration, staff, students and volunteers of the school.

19

Page 26: 4.files.edl.io  · Web viewParent. Faculty. Student. Handbook. Revised: February 2019. Dear Parents, Welcome to a new school year. The Sacred Heart School Faculty and Staff are committed

It is expected that parents/guardians will not post defamatory or threatening statements about the school, its staff or students on social media. If this happens, it will be taken up for review with the administration.

PARENT’S ASSOCIATION (PA)Teachers and parents of children who attend Sacred Heart School are members of the PA. The PA has three primary functions:

1. to promote friendship, good will, and communication within the school community, among the parents, and between parents and teachers

2. to provide services to the school that enrich our children's educational experience3. to raise, collect, and distribute funds

The PA may organize other fundraisers, such as the Gift Wrap Sale and Book Fair, that may vary from year to year. These fundraisers provide the PA’s operations budget, which allows for special gifts to the school, assemblies, funds for the scholarship program, and other projects. PA also organizes after-school enrichment. PA meetings are held monthly. Please check the school calendar for specific dates. All are welcome.

REPORT CARDS Teachers of grades 5-8 use PowerSchool to post student grades online regularly throughout the grading period. A password is given to each family at the beginning of the school year that can be used to log in to PowerSchool and access grade information.

Report cards are mailed one to two weeks after each trimester has ended (November, March, and June). If, at any time, you would like to discuss your child’s progress, please contact the teacher.  The teachers’ email addresses are in the school buzz book on the page after the family listings. A failing grade is not given without prior written notice, phone call or conference with the parents.ROOM PARENTSRoom parents work with the classroom teacher to organize parent volunteers for various school events. Room parent roles will vary by class and year, but typical involvement includes the following:• Plan and execute class parties for Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day• Work with teachers to obtain chaperones for field trips• Coordinate a class project for Nite Lites, the school’s annual fundraiser

SCHOOL BOARDThe School Board serves as an advisory organization to the Principal and Pastor on the effectiveness, viability, and policies of the school.  All policies must be in accord with those established by the Archdiocesan School Board.

The School Board is composed of 9 elected members who serve three-year terms. Three new members are elected each year. The School Board members are listed in the school Buzz Book and on the website.

Meetings of the School Board are held on the second Tuesday of the month (except July). Parents wishing to address the Board are requested to contact the Board Chairperson no later than twenty-four hours before the scheduled meeting.

SCHOOL COLORS AND MASCOTSchool colors are red and white.  The Sacred Heart school mascot is the Viking.

SECURITYThe school is secured during school hours.  Admittance to the building is through the front door by ringing the bell. All visitors, including parents, must sign in at the school office. All visitors to Sacred Heart School must be wearing the visitor tag that the office will provide them as soon as they sign in at the front desk. School Lock Down drills are conducted periodically. Detailed plans for the lock down, fire, and tornado procedures are posted in each classroom.

SPIRITUAL FORMATIONIn addition to the faith development provided in the religion curriculum, Sacred Heart School provides daily opportunities to enhance the spiritual growth of the child, including prayer, celebration of Liturgy, reception of the sacrament of Reconciliation, seasonal services, and other spiritual opportunities. Parents are encouraged to participate in special school liturgies and are invited to pray with the students at the Advent and Lenten prayer services.

The school builds on the faith foundation received at home. It is essential that the family celebrate the Liturgy as a family at the Saturday/Sunday Mass.

The school prepares the children for the sacrament of Reconciliation and the reception of First Eucharist as part of the second grade religion program. Children review the sacrament of Reconciliation in the fourth grade at a deeper level. Eighth graders prepare for the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation. Parental participation and involvement are expected.

SUPPLIESClass supply lists are posted on the school websites for each grade level. Families may purchase supplies on their own before the first day of school, or they may order supplies through the school and a box with all needed supplies will be ready for the child on the first day of school. Information regarding these orders is sent home in May for the following school year. Please replenish basic necessities as needed during the year.

STUDENT RECORDSThe Family Education Rights and Privacy Act states that parents are permitted to inspect and review educational records contained in their child's cumulative record.  Please notify the office to review your child’s records.

STUDENT SERVICESStudent Services Department OverviewIn addition to excellent classroom teachers, Sacred Heart has several highly trained staff members who support these teachers in meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of each student. Response to Intervention (RTi) practices are incorporated throughout the school. Our philosophy is to keep students in the general education classroom as much as possible so the majority of time the specialists push in to support students within the classroom. There are cases when it does make sense to pull students out of the classroom to work with the specialist in a smaller setting, either individually or in a small group.  The role of each Student Services member is described below.

21

Page 28: 4.files.edl.io  · Web viewParent. Faculty. Student. Handbook. Revised: February 2019. Dear Parents, Welcome to a new school year. The Sacred Heart School Faculty and Staff are committed

Additionally, those students needing more specific interventions may be referred to the District 36 Staff. Title Funds are allocated by law for special services of all children who require more specific testing and special education services through an IEP (Individual Education Plan). Parents and teachers may request these services through a process of identification. Please begin the discussion of additional services with your child’s teacher. Director of Student Services/Learning SpecialistThe learning specialist works with students, parents, and teachers to support students who have a diagnosis of learning needs. The learning specialist will help identify specific learning strategies, encourage the application of strategies, and monitor student progress. Services are available for students in all grades, and the learning specialist will work with public schools as well as private agencies in the diagnosis of learning difficulties.  She is also the case manager for any student who has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504. The learning specialist provides pull-out services to students in grades 6-8 as well.  Reading SpecialistThe reading specialist works with individuals as well as groups of students to improve essential reading skills such as decoding, encoding, fluency, and comprehension skills.  This is done through a multi-sensory reading intervention program. The reading specialist works with classroom teachers to assess student reading, determine reading levels, develop classroom libraries, and create plans for reading interventions when necessary. Math SpecialistThe math specialist works with students on a regular basis in support of the class's math curriculum. She may provide support to students who are struggling, enrichment to those who are exceeding expectations, or more individualized attention for students who are performing at grade level.  A benchmark assessment is administered three times a year in grades 1-8 to guide the teachers and the math specialist in providing targeted support and enrichment. CounselorThe school counselor works with teachers and students to help the school meet its academic goals. The specific support services are varied but may include consultation with parents and teachers, program development, and direct work with children in groups and individually. The school counselor may interact with your child in various ways:

Character Education Lessons: The counselor may work with whole classes on character education. Topics covered include but are not limited to sharing, citizenship, good sportsmanship, cooperation, conflict resolution, and friendship.

Individual and Small Groups: A child may be referred by parent or teacher for individual or small group work for a variety of reasons. The counselor may work with a child to facilitate behavioral change, to enhance communication and social skills, help students cope with daily and life stressors, and promote decision making skills. The counselor will meet with the child and communicate with parents and teachers regarding the child's individual needs.

Speech PathologistSpeech and language services are funded through Winnetka District 36, under the category of "free and proportionate share."  The speech pathologist is hired by the public school district and come to Sacred Heart two times per week. The services provided are determined by the student's case study, noting his/her specific needs and goals.  A mild issue entitles a student to

Parents are responsible for paying tuition through Smart Tuition and may do so by direct debit, credit card, or check. Parents may choose one of the following payment schedules.• Pay tuition annually, with full payment due in August• Pay tuition semi-annually, with payments due in August and February• Pay tuition monthly, with payments due each month August through July• All tuition is to be paid by June 30 each year. • $40 late fee will be charged if payment is not received by the due date

Registration FeeThe registration fee is $600 per family and due at the time of registration. This fee holds a place in the class for your children and is non-refundable.

Activity FeesActivity fees will vary from family to family depending on the grade levels of children and the varied activities that take place at each grade level. Activity fees cover class field trips, 2nd grade sacramental fees, PA dues, the 8th grade Confirmation fee, and computer fees for all grades.  Including yearbook and milk in the activity fee is optional.  Families are billed for this fee in September along with the tuition.

Tuition AssistanceIt is our goal here at Sacred Heart that any family who wants a Catholic education for their child be given that opportunity, regardless of financial situation. If you are interested in applying for financial assistance, please click on the link below and follow the directions to complete a SMART Aid application.

Parent Instructions 2018 - 2019 https://support.whipplehill.com/attachments/token/iIZVp3sT0GQt10YAYObGyWekr/?name=13854+Parent+Instructions+2018-2019.pdf   Once an application for tuition assistance is received, an award amount will be calculated based on individual family need, the amount of funds available, and the number of students in need of assistance per year.  The tuition assistance award amount will be communicated via a letter.  The letter must be signed and returned to the school or parish business office.   The award amount will be spread out over the monthly payments.  Families receiving tuition assistance must remain current with tuition payments or they will forfeit the award funds.

DelinquencyIf a family is delinquent in paying tuition, they will be contacted by Smart Tuition and assessed a $40 late fee. A payment plan must be submitted and adhered to. Failure to adhere to the agreed upon payment plan will result in dismissal from school. If you anticipate difficulty making your scheduled tuition payment, you must contact the business manager in order to avoid the $40 late fee.

Sacred Heart School Technology Acceptable Use & Privacy Policy

An annual signature is required by all Sacred Heart School Parents/ Guardians so that students may gain access to school issued computers, laptops, iPads and the Sacred Heart School email and network.  If you have any questions about this policy, please contact Ms. Sheelagh Spooner or Ms. Kristen Fink. Sacred Heart School strives to educate students using 21st century technology in a wise but progressive educational atmosphere.  Sacred Heart School electronic devices and its technology infrastructure are intended to enhance the educational resources of the school, support its academic and administrative work, enhance communication between various parts of the community, and provide tools for the life-long learning.  All students, parents and faculty understand that the use of technology at school is a privilege and that its benefits are highly dependent on an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust. With this privilege comes the great responsibility of protecting the safety and reputation of all members of the Sacred Heart community. We believe that all students should have access to technology when they act in a responsible, efficient, courteous and legal manner.  Internet access and other technologies available to students and teachers offer a multitude of global resources. Our goal in providing these services is to enhance the educational development of our students.  Responsible uses of technology are devoted to activities that support teaching and learning. Therefore, every user is required to act in a responsible, efficient, ethical and legal manner. Failure of any student to follow this acceptable use policy will result in disciplinary action. Network activities are monitored by the administration at Sacred Heart School.  The following policies apply to any and all electronic devices used on campus at any time, and/or during school events on or off campus. Parents and guardians are primarily responsible for the student’s appropriate and ethical use of technology outside of school.  However, the inappropriate use of technology outside of school may subject the student to disciplinary action. Inappropriate use of technology may include, but is not limited to, harassment of others, use of the school name, remarks directed to or about teachers and staff, offensive communications including videos/ photographs and threats.

All students at Sacred Heart School agree to the following rules:
