ben lewis why i love liverpool

liverpool is liverpool. The city has a diverse mix of people and architecture which produces an incredible amount of spots and characters... it's always interesting when you travel about. if you have a good attitude though you normally tend to make mates instead of startin' fights.

there's no outdoor city pArk. i think the lack of a outdoor skatepark or plaza in the city vicinity is a positive note. i believe this lets us get away with ridin' street a lot more than would be possible if such facilities did exist. There's already £200 fines and '3 strikes an you're barred from the city centre' policies when ridin' certain spots.

the pubs And bArs.There is a large collection of bars and pubs that will let you take your bikes inside and are also friendly to the types of activities most of us get up to. if you hit up liverpool always go to the pilgrim on pilgrim St... and the Grapes on roscoe st. Good times guaranteed.

life when you cAnt ride.Aside from going to chibuku or creamfields an bending ya mind, there's a lot to do and see in the arts world. even though this year is the Capital of Culture many worthwhile wastes of time constantly exist. From 40 foot full pipes and Cali style bowls built in an art gallery solely for the architectural magnificence, to reclaim the streets drinkin' events... all is good for the injured rider.

the school.The school is somewhere i grew up. i went there in the daytime and when school finished i went straight back and rode there with me' mates. when i first started riding it was a hot spot for the likes of Geoff rowley and co but as the years passed less people came through as the place got more into it's security. Now its all sound again and sessions for us are all going strong. Calderstones School if your interested.. just be nice to the place.

James cox’s Top 5Filming & EdiTing Tips

1. The main thing I always try and get across in an edit is the personality of the subject, or the feel of the trip for everyone involved. For me, going out to film these guys is way more than just tricks. if you keep an eye out for people’s mannerisms and habits whilst you’re shooting, you’re way more likely to be able to capture little snippets of them that will be really valuable when it comes to the cut, which will help the viewers to learn a little about the personality of who they’re watching once the edit is released.

2. When I’m shooting, I like talking to the riders about what they’re about to do, so i can fully understand where they’re going and what they’re planning. This is way better for me than just choosing a spot and filming a session from the sidelines, because you’re bound to miss something or not do everyone’s tricks justice from the same angle and without that level of communication. Also, i think once you’ve had a chat with who you’re filming and discussed what they’re about to do, the whole process of filming it becomes much easier and more natural for everyone.

3. An ongoing challenge for me is finding songs for edits that fit both the personality of the footage, and that also represent the individual images of the companies that 4down distribute. Even when i’m not in the middle of a video, i constantly dig for new artists and songs that may come in handy for particular edits. Even though sometimes the music i stumble across isn’t necessarily stuff i’d buy and listen to myself at home, i always try to keep a very open mind on it and appreciate how different songs work with different riders or road trips. like i mentioned before, it’s all about character and personality, and for me music is a big part of that.

4. I watch a lot of skate videos nowadays for inspiration. The filming and cutting is always of such a high standard, and the level of professionalism in a lot of skate videos is always a great target to work towards. inspiration for things like graphic styles and titles can be drawn from all over the place - illustration, print design, cinema and television, you just need to keep an eye out for things that work, that you could develop for your own projects. A lot of the time i like to keep that sort of thing really clean and simple, but it’s always good to throw in the odd little graphic that polishes off the edit.

5. I think one of the most important things in my job is enjoying what i’m doing. i get on with all the 4down riders really well, which makes being on the road with them or staying with them on filming trips really easy. i love filming these guys and i like to think that in a way this shows through my edits. it’s always an exciting experience being out filming, and i think it’s that excitement that gets me fired up to do the edit, to try and recreate the experience and the fun i had filming it all for the people who watch the edits at home.
