OverviewAs you begin work on your IT Infrastructure Library(ITIL) version 3 Configuration Management System
(CMS) or revisit your current CMS initiative, beyondchoosing a technology solution you will need toundertake activities such as defining your enterpriseIT data model, identifying data providers and dataconsumers, and developing data discovery and datafederation plans. HP Software and Solutions can helpyou address these activities using a best practiceapproach that will result in both a highly effectiveCMS solution as well as one that delivers a highreturn on investment (ROI). This solution brief outlineshow to get started building your CMS leveragingHP CMS Best Practices for designing, deploying,
and operating an ITIL v3 CMS.
From CMDB to CMSEnterprises continue to mature in their understandiand use of a best practice approach to the deliver
of IT services as embodied by ITIL v3. Fundamentathe successful delivery of IT services is the existencof robust capabilities for managing and reportingon the configurations of IT elements that supportcritical IT processes such as incident, change, andproblem management.
ITIL v2 recognized the need for high integrity dataaround configurations and introduced the conceptof a configuration management database (CMDB)However, most early CMDB efforts attempted toimplement a single monolithic CMDB that wasintended to hold all configuration data from acrosthe enterprise. Unfortunately, this approach proveunworkable for most large enterprises given the scand complexity of their IT environments.

ITIL v3 evolved the original concept of CMDB tothat of a federated CMS. Rather than creating andmaintaining a single monolithic CMDB that physicallystores all service information, a federated CMS
features an integrated CMDB that can not only storeconfiguration items (CIs) and model their servicedependencies, but also dynamically access otherdata sources to provide all IT management domainswith a more complete, common understanding ofbusiness services.
This integrated CMDB provides a single point ofaccess to multiple federated data sources withoutbecoming the single repository. By using a federatedapproach, IT organizations can quickly accesscurrent information across teams and tools in acommon service context, resulting in faster, better,business-aware decisions that improve businessservice quality and reduce cost.
A best practice approach to CMSHP introduced the industrys first ITIL v3 CMS solutionand has significant experience working with largescale enterprises to deploy CMS solutions. The heartof the HP CMS solution is the HP Universal CMDBthat delivers the key functionality required for anintegrated CMDB.
While the HP CMS solution has addressed thetechnology challenge of providing all IT processeswith high integrity data related to configurations, the challenge associated with architecting, deploy
and operating a CMS can still be significant. To hyou address this challenge, HP has developed a bpractice approach that provides specific guidanceon how to effectively design, build, and operate arobust CMS.
The HP CMS Best Practice LibraryThe HP CMS Best Practice Library is the foundatioof the HP approach. The use of the library acrossHP means that everyone involved in CMS projectshas a common understanding of the value a CMSsolution delivers and a common approach tounlocking that value.
The HP CMS Best Practice Library defines bestpractices for a broad range of topics related tobuilding and maintaining an ITIL v3 CMS including
Leveraging the HP BTO Data Model *
Discovery and federation planning
Onboarding data providers and data consumer
Creating service dependency maps
Integrating HP software and other third-party solu
* The HP Business Technology Optimization Data Model is a commoinformation model that is shared across all of HP BTO Software Sol

From design through operationThe use of HP CMS Best Practices Library createsvalue for you by facilitating a consistent andstandardized approach to designing and deliveringCMS solutions. The primary vehicle used to workwith prospective enterprises to identify their CMSneeds in the design phase is the CMS Value
Discovery Workshop. This workshop builds upon thebest practice library and works with you to definean end-state CMS solution that represents bothorganizational and technology needs consistent withyour business drivers.
The workshop starts with an assessment of your currentCMS related capability. The workshop also identifiesyour specific IT process improvement objectives andother business objectives to frame the CMS relatedcapability needed to support these objectives.
Armed with this knowledge, HP works with you toremove the gap between where you are today anwhere you need to be in the future. The end resulta set of CMS related recommendations that addrethe following:
The end-state technology solution
Integrations needed to support the end-state solu
A phased approach to specific value deliveringinitiatives that lead to the end-state solution
At the end of this workshop you will have a clearroadmap around CMS technology and CMS-relatinitiatives (see figure 1). If you choose to workwith HP as your implementation partner, you willfind that HP Software and Solutions ProfessionalServices also leverages the CMS Best Practice Libas a fundamental element of their CMS-relatedservices engagements.

For organizations that need help designing their ITILprocesses, HP has packaged the intellectual property(IP) of implementing ITIL processes and supportingtechnology in many large international projects intothe Service Management Reference Model. TheService Management Reference Model includes a setof process guides that contain ITIL v3 process modelsthat visually depict process activities, workflows, principles, participants, and inter-process relationships.
Adopting the HP CMS Best Practices enables
organizations to:Decrease the time to design and implement adetailed ITIL v3 CMS solution by leveragingproven IP
Reduce implementation costs by starting with apre-packaged solution where possible
Reduce risk by implementing tested andproven designs developed from many customerimplementation projects
Why HPHP has decades of experience working on IT ServManagement initiatives and was a major contributo ITIL v3, which has introduced the CMS concept.Furthermore, HP has vast experience working withlarge enterprises that have implemented HP CMSsolutions and technology. HP provides organizatioboth the process and technology foundation needto deliver consistent high quality outcomes and astrong ROI.
