needed to achieve Flightpath 2050 goals– public consultation during May-June– Discussion during GA in Farnborough– Adopted by GA in Farnborough
•SRIA Vol 2– develops R&I in detail and adds a possibility to monitor the
implementation through linking them to actions undertaken, ongoing andplanned
– Presented as an electronic database– will be finalised by September listing detailed actions necessary and
linking them to actions to be taken

Roadmap and network for strategic researchinfrastructures, including virtual means and
certification purpose, joint effort on challengingissues: e.g. flying test beds (X-planes), crisis
management systems, high power computing,etc.
Fully integrated European Aviation educationsystem, engineers are attracted by aviation
careers, curricula is attractive (prizes, awards),tailored to the needs and adapts to the evolutionof the sector (incl. longlife learning), partnershipsbetween university and industry are established

Discussion issues during GA
Questions (ref draft v7.3):1. Is Vol1 complete and sufficiently ambitious ?2.Does it address Flightpath 2050 goals in sufficient
depth?3.Have we struck the right balance?4.Which are the biggest challenges in
implementation?
Advisory Council for Aviation Research and innovation in Europe 12
Main comments during General Assembly -1
• Fuels of the future should get more emphasis• Safety to be leading item in introduction, not affordability• Overregulation to be addressed and (over)taxation money
could be more efficiently used for R&D• Glimpse of the future should be more customer centric• Various pleas for more attention for Rotorcraft, BJ, GA• Include a more global looking view, BRIC countries etc.• Commission likes the timing of the document, well aligned
with H2020• Also look into other sectors and developments there
(chemistry, logistics, ICT)
Advisory Council for Aviation Research and innovation in Europe 13
Main comments during General Assembly -2
• Europe should be the leader, not a leader• Communicate to the outside world not only to the happy few• Issues of education and infrastructure as key for the future
– Look also into the number of pilots needed
• Role of aviation for the entire economy (e.g. 911, vulcano)
• Note: Airbus (Krein) suggested to develop a mechanismsuch that anything that has been developed with EU moneyshould be first applied within Europe Action to write a statement together with Thales.
Advisory Council for Aviation Research and innovation in Europe 14
Results and Planning:• SRIA endorsed,• Steering Group
– to address comments made at General Assembly and give guidelinesto WGs
• WGs:– to implement and double-check the received comments from public
consultation– Check the coherence with Vol 2
• NEARS:– Shorten and polish text where possible and appropriate
• CG:– Develop draft for excecutive summary
• At ILA presentation of SRIA vol 1• Next GA in feb 2013
– Main agenda topic is implementation of SRIA including future ACAREStructure
Advisory Council for Aviation Research and innovation in Europe 15
Planning (2)
To finalise SRIA Vol2 by autumn, the Steering Group will supervise thefollowing tasks:
• A database will be developed based on the material submitted byworking groups
• After a check by the Steering Group and the Monitoring Group, theworking groups are tasked to fill the main gaps before the databaseis made public on ACARE new website
SRIA Vol2 is a dynamic document and will be updated by workinggroups throughout SRIA implementation.
SRIA Vol1 is a static document which will be updated when majorchanges are necessary (ca every 5-10 years)
Advisory Council for Aviation Research and innovation in Europe 16
Strategic Aeronautics Research Infrastructure
Rationale:– Res&Test infrastructure is essential for competitiveness of aviation
industry– But constant consumption of financial resources
A presentation/discussion on ESFRI in the MSG led to the conclusionsthat– success within ESFRI is unlikely for aviation at the moment– alternative processes for Res&Test Infrastructure on EU-level need to
be evaluated– There is a need for a independent expert group to evaluate, classify &
maintain existing Res&Test Infrastructure in Europe based on findingsof WG5
Advisory Council for Aviation Research and innovation in Europe 17
Independent Experts Group (IEG)
Steering Group endorsed the set-up of an Independent Expert GroupScope of Work of the IEG
– Define a methodology and list criteria that can be used to identifyinfrastructure facilities that are “strategic” for Europe vs. facilities that are“important” on regional/ national level.
– Evaluate with this the infrastructures database of AirTN– Identify possible gaps in the existing infrastructure based on the R&I
roadmap established by WG5 .– Identify the infrastructures, for which public (national of European) or
private investments are appropriate, and provide a respective rationale.– Develop new financing concepts and identify sources (including EU
streams such as ESFRI, Structural funds, 'Horizon 2020', joint nationalfunds, etc.)
The group should report to the ACARE Member States Group and WG5

Advisory Council for Aviation Research and innovation in Europe 26
• Steering Group to prepare a proposal for GAmeeting in February 2013
• Preparation through a dedicated group• Ideas collected by Uwe Möller
• Up to now inputs from MSG, WG1• WG1, WG2 and WG4 now preparing joint input
• Current ACARE Working Groups continue andprovide input
Steering Group
Advisory Council for Aviation Research and innovation in Europe 27
Issues to address
• Mechanisms to prioritise research• How to approach areas with input needs and interfaces to other
stakeholders and sectors, e.g.• Intermodality• Alternative fuels – energy• Materials
• Risks and risk management• PPPs, collaborative research, activities at different TRL (L0 – L3),
national / EU programmes• Monitoring of implementation and results• Continued role and structure of ACARE
