2019 TSRC State Convention Workshops All workshop participants will have access to beverages throughout the day; however, lunch is on your own.
NBRC Therapist Multiple Choice (TMC) Exam Prep Workshop – 6 CE Hour – This workshop is designed to assist individuals in preparing to challenge the new NBRC TMC Board Exam. Participants in the workshop will leave with a better understanding of board exam test taking and board exam content. Attendees can range from new grads who have not yet taken the exam or have had difficulty passing it or current credentialed practitioners wishing to challenge the exam to become registry eligible. Our mission is to assist those in our profession looking to advance their career and holding the RRT credential designation is just one step in doing so.
The presenter for this workshop is Mr. Chris Kallus, M.Ed, RRT, Program Director and Instructor at The Victoria College in Victoria , Texas. Kallus graduated from Southwest Texas State University with AAS degree in 1978, followed by a BS degree in Health Professions in 1979. Received M.Ed, from University of Houston in 1987. At Victoria College he was the Clinical Director from 1981 - 1990, and Program Director from 1990 to present. Chris has been a TSRC and AARC member since 1977. Victoria College holds a 100% pass rate on the NBRC TMC exam, and he can help you do the same. Vascular Access Workshop - 6 CE Hour – this workshop is designed to provide the attendees information on performing vascular access and hands-on practice and demonstration of the different procedures. Course Curriculum Includes:
Peripheral intravenous line placement is within the scope of Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRTs) in the state of Texas, the RRTs at UT Southwestern (UTSW) had not been trained to perform this procedure. This project was developed to: 1) Provide a “no blind stick” approach to vascular access 2) Facilitate RRTs to work to the full extent of their licensure 3) Offer the bedside nurse an additional trained resource in vascular access.

A hands-on four-hour workshop to include prework and hands-on simulation training. The simulation training will include ultrasound assessment, needling techniques with the use of ultrasound, arterial, and venous peripheral device insertion. Attendees will rotate through hands-on stations to gain awareness and procedural confidence. Stations will include leading the needle, rapid peripheral vein assessment (RaPEVA), midline insertion, extended-dwell peripheral iv (EDPIV) insertion and arterial catheter insertion.

2019 Respiratory Care Foundation First
Annual Bowling Tournament - The 2019 “No
Experience Required” Respiratory Care
Foundation of Texas Benefit Bowling
Tournament will be held on Tuesday July 9,
2019 at the AMF Westview Lanes in Waco, Texas. This event is designed to have fun and
friendly competition for all skill level of bowlers and will act as the main fundraising event for
the Respiratory Care Foundation of Texas.
Each 4-person team will consist of a team captain and 3 supporting team members. The event
theme is “No Experience Required” but to liven up the event a little bit more, we ask each team
to come up with a team “theme” and dress in that theme during the time of play. A Committee
Choice Award will be awarded to the team with the most unique outfit. If you are an individual
and would like to us to place you on a team, we can do that as well. Just register as an
individual and we will put you on a team. We will connect all individuals with their respective
team members prior to the event so you can get together and come up with your team name
and theme together. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams will be presented with a trophy.
Winning teams will be awarded to the 3 highest 3-game accumulative team scores based on the
official scores provided to the tournament committee by the bowling alley. Winners will be
announced at the awards ceremony following the bowling tournament.
Bowling shoe rental, bowling fees, unlimited soda, and a cheese pizza bar is included in the
tournament registration. Alcohol and other food can be purchased from the alley snack bar. We
highly encourage spectators to come and cheer on the teams, but they will be responsible for
providing their own food and beverages

4 Person Team Registration - $75/team (must have a full team to get the team discount.
Substitutions will only be allowed with prior approval at least 1 week before the event.)
Individual Registrant Needing Team Placement - $20/person (If you know you would like to be
paired with specific individuals but do not have enough people to make up a full 4-person team,
please put the individuals’ names you would like to be paired with in the additional team
member blanks on the registration form. If they register, we will place you together)
Tournament Corporate Sponsorship - $100 includes registration for one 4-person team and
your company logo will be displayed at the bowling tournament, on the tournament web page,
and on all tournament correspondence (excluding tournament trophies) Tournament sponsor

2019 “Meet the Managers” Social – The 2019 “Meet the Managers” Social is a 1.5 hour social
event held in the exhibit hall beginning at 5:30PM on Monday July 8, 2019. This event invites
mangers and other purchase influencers to round through the exhibit hall for a more one-one
one experience with our exhibitors. Finger foods and drinks will be available during this time.
2019 Exhibit Hall Grand Opening – The 2019 Exhibit Hall Grand Opening will be held Tuesday
July 9, 2019 at 9AM The grand opening will showcase local entertainment, vendor booths, TSRC
Central merchandise and apparel, door prizes and much, much more. Join us for the fun, food
and excitement surrounding this great event.
2019 TSRC Sputum Bowl – The 2019 TSRC Sputum Bowl will be held on Tuesday July 9, 2019.
The event begins at 8:00AM and will feature teams from across the state as they compete to be
the Texas Sputum Bowl Champions and advance to compete at the AARC Sputum Bowl at the
AARC Congress. Teams can be made of all students or all practitioners.
Keynote Presentations
The Key Note speaker for Tuesday July 9, 2019 will be Dr. Brian
Carlin. Dr. Carlin Dr. currently practices pulmonary, critical care,
and sleep medicine in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of
the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and
completed his internship/residency/chief residency at Allegheny
General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He then completed a pulmonary
and critical care medicine fellowship at the University of California San Diego. He is currently
employed by Pittsburgh Critical Care Associates and by Sleep Medicine and Lung Health
Consultants and is the medical director for Lifeline Pulmonary Rehabilitation Centers. He has
been active in many regional and national organizations being the current chairperson for the
National Lung Health Education Program (NLHEP) and a member of the board of the National
Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). His interests include pulmonary rehabilitation, readmission
reduction programs, and education of healthcare providers. He is the current co-chair of the
recently published guidelines for pulmonary rehabilitation (5th edition). His presentation will
focus on the future of Respiratory Therapists and how "taking it to the next level" will offer new
opportunities. Hear and learn from Dr. Brian Carlin, a National Leader of Pulmonary Medicine,
ways to expand RT services and gain professional recognition.
The Key Note speaker for Wednesday July 10, 2019 will be AARC
President Karen Schell, DHSc, RRT, RRT-NPS, RRT-SDS, RPFT, RPSGT,
AE-C, CTTS. Karen is the Clinical Assistant Professor at Kansas
University Department of Respiratory Care Education and Diagnostic
Science She currently serves as a classroom, simulation,
Interprofessional Education, and clinical instructor in the Department
of Respiratory Care Education and Diagnostic Science. In addition to
the on-campus instruction, she is also an advisor for the on-campus
program for respiratory therapists wanting to obtain a bachelor’s
degree. Schell brings over 39 years of experience to the program in
patient advocacy, education, management, best practices, and public relations. Schell is the
current sitting President of the American Association for Respiratory Care. President Schell will
review and describe the 6 AARC Horizon goals implementation and progress as the profession
moves forward to meet the challenges ahead and to properly place the RT in the competition
among other health professions.

“It’s a Matter of Life and Breath… Medical Ethics and You” - Presented By: Daniel
“Scotty” Silva, MBA, BAS, RRT, RCP
The Respiratory care Practitioner should become aware of the role that Ethics plays in
our everyday clinical practice. Clinical ethics goes well beyond just right and wrong and
it exceeds our personal preferences, personalities, and experiences. There is a universal
standard of measuring ethical dilemmas in our everyday practice and ethical dilemmas
should be viewed through the prism of; beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, and
justice. In addition, the Respiratory Care Practitioner should be able to recognize both
the need for Advanced Directives but also the clinical complexities and legal
ramifications of a patients expressed wishes. (2.0 CE Hour)
“Making Waves” - Presented By: Steve Deatrick, RA, RRT
The ability for the bedside Respiratory Therapist to enhance secretion removal, non-
invasively, can play a huge roll in the treatment of patient that have airway clearance
needs. The patient can be instructed to perform this therapy independently, thus
minimizing some readmissions to hospital. (1.0 CE Hour)
“The Role of the RT in Organ Procurement: A Perfect Role for Us” - Presented By:
Michael Hewitt, RRT-ACCS, NPS, RCP, FAARC, FCCM
This topic discusses the very critical need to increase the number of organs that are
made available for gifting. It further discusses the need for the RT and RT Department to
be on the front line of this increase, especially with lungs. Also suggests various ways for
the RT to accomplish this goal. (1.0 CE Hour)
“The RRT and SLP – Using Multidisciplinary Teams to Improve Patient Outcomes” -
Presented By: Sara Newman, CCC-SLP
Care of tracheostomized patients in the acute care setting requires expertise from
multiple providers. There is a strong body of evidence to suggest that interdisciplinary
teams that include an RRT and a speech-language pathologist (SLP) improve patient
outcomes. Participants will gain an evidence-based understanding of exactly why and
how these teams work. (1.0 CE Hour)

types of medication delivery devices and why it is important to evaluate the patient's

“Pulmonary Rehabilitation 2019” - Presented By: Kitty Collins, RRT
Pulmonary Rehabilitation offers many benefits for patients with lung disease. Knowing
when and how to refer a patient to rehab is essential in providing best care for patients
with COPD. Participants will hear expert advice in how PR is essential in the care for
those with COPD and other lung problems. (1.0 CE Hour)
“RTs Role in Reducing COPD Exacerbation and Readmission” - Presented By: Keith
James, RRT
This presentation will describe successful Hospital COPD programs that help provide
patient education and self-management tools prior to discharge from the hospital.
Program Goals and ways to reduce hospitalizations for this patient population will be

“Use of Non-invasive Home Ventilation for the Treatment of Stable COPD/CRF in
Reducing Hospitalizations and Readmissions” - Presented By: Daniel Schorre, RRT, RCP
COPD is a chronic, progressive lung disease that is very intricate regarding the diagnosis
and management of the disease. As the disease progresses, the management of
symptoms should evolve with it. This presentation will take you through the proper
diagnosis and treatment of stable COPD and show how implementing non-invasive
home ventilation will positively impact the lives of patients with Chronic Hypercapnic

This lecture will discuss how to use ventilator graphics and clinical assessment to
identify patient ventilator asynchronies. Potential solutions to these asynchronies will
then be examined. As well two new modes (PAV and NAVA), specifically designed to

“Understanding the Value of Ventilator Graphics” - Presented By: Michael Hewitt,

This is a general review of ventilator waveforms. Understanding the values and

“Improving the Process of Arterial Blood Gas Collection” - Presented By: Callie

In our current state, arterial punctures are performed “blindly.” The Voice of the
Customer has expressed opportunities for improvement to be made to the standard
process for collecting arterial blood samples. Adopting a "No Blind Sticks" initiative for
arterial punctures supports the ideals of Exceptional Patient Care, Consumer Focus,

“State of the Art in Respiratory Support with High Flow Nasal Cannula” - Presented By:

This is a 50 minute presentation with 5-10 minutes of discussion of the principal mechanisms,

determine the primary therapeutic mechanisms and link those through the physiological

“Clinical Benefits of FeNO Monitoring in Asthma” - Presented By: Ryan Burton, MS,

This presentation consists of scientific, unbranded, literature and material that describes
the various benefits of monitoring Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) in patients
who have or are suspected to have asthma. The presentation will cover various topics,

throughout the United States and its territories. MRC volunteers include medical and
public health professionals, as well as other community members without healthcare
backgrounds. MRC units engage these volunteers to strengthen public health, improve
emergency response capabilities and build community resiliency.
