“As I read the Reflections newsletter, Ipondered the changes since I left in1973. I have sent many students toSiena over the years, including adaughter, son and daughter-in-law. Allthree are teachers, and I’m proud theygraduated from Siena. The worry Ihave is that the standards just are notthe same. ...the old lessons of the nunshave served me well. Your newslettershowed many of the old guard; howmany do you have teaching like thattoday? The name change—was itworth it? Don’t forget the non-trads(non-traditional students) and remem-ber that progress does not have totrample the best practices of the past.”

“The Siena newsletter is veryinteresting. Blessings. I loved thepictures of former faculty — SisterBenedicta Marie, in particular.”

n recent months, ourmarketing efforts havepromoted the theme,Siena Heights is MyUniversity, emphasizing

not only our new name but also ourcontinued commitment topersonalized education. We wanteach student who enrolls, at anySiena Heights location across thestate, to encounter the kind ofindividual attention and challengethat produces strong feelings ofownership and pride. “SienaHeights is MY University!”

This issue of Reflections is tangibleevidence that Siena Heights is,indeed, your University. We are grateful to the hundreds of people whocontributed their treasure and time to Siena Heights in 1997-98: This is youruniversity. We are overwhelmed by the willingness of alumni to reach out andshare their lives through reunion notes: Siena Heights is your university. Werejoice in the efforts and achievements of students, faculty and friends, whosefaces on each page remind us of the diverse community that is Siena: This is yourplace. We give thanks for the wisdom of the Adrian Dominicans, without whosevision there would be no Siena Heights: Most certainly, this university is yours.

One of the most rewarding aspects of events such as Alumni/Family Weekend isthe opportunity to put faces with names. This year’s 50th Reunion Breakfast, forexample, brought me face to face for the first time with more of our “valiantwomen.” Throughout that day, at the soccer field, under the tailgate tent, and atthe Delta Lambda Chapter installation of the national sorority, Alpha Sigma Tau,I met our students’ parents. Across the tables at the Las Vegas Night, moreconnections of names and faces occurred with our alumni. Meeting alumni, students, parents and donors— turning names into real people, with real concernand affection for Siena Heights— is the most satisfying part of my job.

As Reflections goes to press and a new year approaches, I encourage you to makeSiena Heights our university in 1999. Attend an alumni gathering (we’re meetingin Chicago and St. Joseph, Michigan, in mid-December) or call us and offer tohost one. Contact a past professor or that friend who sat next to you in Englishclass. Attend our concerts, plays, art exhibits, and athletic events. Support theAnnual Fund. Mention Siena Heights to a prospective student.

The importance of ownership was brought home to me when I heard a conferencespeaker ask the audience, “When was the last time you washed a rental car?” Ouruniversity is a great legacy for generations to follow. Thank you for helping takecare of it.

Supporting Siena Heightsarren and Catherine Reuther of Lambertville are neither SienaHeights alumni, nor parents of Siena graduates, nor even long-timeneighbors of the campus. Yet, over the last decade, they havebecome two of the most generous and committed supporters of theUniversity. In 1997-98, they personally contributed $250,000 to

establish an endowed professorship, while Warren’s business, Bay CorrugatedContainer, Inc., donated an additional $240,000 for physical plant projects.

What inspires such generosity in a husband and wife with no obvious ties to SienaHeights? The answer is a story of serendipity and simple faith, grounded—as is somuch at this University—in the enduring influence of the Adrian Dominican Sisters.

Some years ago, several Siena Heights representatives walked unannounced into theMonroe offices of Bay Corrugated, approached its owner, and asked for a donation. Asit happened, another of the causes Warren Reuther usually supported had neglected toask. Siena Heights received the gift.

Catherine Reuther recognized the Siena Heights name from her school days in Detroit, studying with the Adrian Dominican Sisters at St. Jude Elementary School. “I justloved the nuns,” she recalls now. “They were so modern and fun loving in their whitehabits. They smiled a lot—there were no sour faces! They were good teachers, too. They helped you if you needed help.” And one more thing: “They always talked aboutSiena Heights.”

So Catherine was delighted to hear about Warren’s drop-in guests, and his response totheir request. The rest, you might say, is history.

“Whatever I have, was given to me by God,” says Warren, explaining his andCatherine’s belief in sharing their good fortune with good causes. Education is theirchosen cause. “With the way the world is, we think Catholic education, or anyChristian school, is the best place to send your kids,” Catherine says.

“But it’s not just money,” says Warren, who also spearheaded a major partnershipbetween business and education in Monroe and Lenawee counties. Payback forEducation brings children to the workplace to see where their education might lead andtakes business leaders to the schools as tutors. “You see, it’s about working together tosolve a problem.”

The Reuthers have been identifying problems and solutions at Siena Heights ever sincesomeone thought to ask Warren for help. “You can’t do it all at once,” he says. “If theproblem is too big, you break it into workable pieces,” which is what he did recentlywhen evaluating needs in Siena’s science division and in its physical plant. “First wehave to take care of the immediate needs—wages and equipment—then focus onendowment for the long range.”

It won’t all happen with big gifts, either. “Whatever a person can give is welcome,”says Catherine. “Anyone who graduated should want to give. If you’ve been lucky, ifyou’ve been successful, you want to give back some of the good you’ve received fromthe Lord.”

The lessons taught long ago at St. Jude still resonate. The nuns would be pleased.

Other major gifts to Siena Heights in 1997-98:Supporting technology: $600,000 over three years from Orville and Ruth MerillatFoundation; $100,000 from the Adrian Dominican Sisters; $33,000 over three yearsfrom Masco Company Foundation and Merillat Industries; $32,000 from ananonymous donor.

Supporting scholarships: $100,000 over five years from Farver Foundation, Herband Connie Farver; a $350,000 planned gift from David Stevens.

Supporting learning: $10,000 from Dana Corporation Foundation for improvementsin the science labs; $10,000 from Kellogg Company for a distance learning facility.

“What a joy it was to return to Siena after 25 years. I cannot tell you how

proud I was to have been a part of such an academically superior institution!

I was very impressed at the growth, the outstanding additions, the superb

and caring faculty that I met — all the while feeling a strong sense of

Christian kindness and caring that had not changed at all since 1973.”Kathy Forner ‘73, 25th Reunion

“Our 50th reunion was the best ever. We loved the entire set-up, but most of

all the reunion of our classmates, teachers and friends. I’m so glad to have

been a part of this super school and to be left with so many memories.”Frances Bock Nowakowski ‘48, 50th Reunion
