The Zoppè Italian Family Circus is fun for all ages. The show is a traditional European circus performed by ex-tremely talented artists in the same interactive style their ancestors’ en-tertained families over a century ago.

Nino the Clown (Giovanni Zoppè) captures the hearts of all with his clown antics as the central fi gure in the story. The pageantry of To-sca Zoppè, the Equestrian Ballerina, and the fun of Carla Zoppè and her husband Rudy Heinin’s perform-ing canines are the main family acts and show favorites. Tosca’s husband Jay Walther performs as Papino, the ringmaster keeping Nino on his toes.

Other acts with performers from around the world are woven in year-ly to keep the show new every time you see it. The Zoppè Family Circus

is the type of event that becomes a signature for a city. Very well know in the eastern United States, Zoppè performs to sold-out audiences in

Chicago and New York. Only re-cently has the troupe headed west and now performs regularly in Colo-rado, Nevada, Arizona & California

building more loyal fans in the west every year. A special 2015 Colorado engagement runs from August 14th – September 7th.

The Zoppè Family Circus emerged from humble beginnings more than 160 years ago to become one of the legendary circuses in all of Europe. And like many good legends, it be-gan with a boy and a girl falling in love.

In 1842, a young French street per-former named Napoleone Zoppè wandered into a plaza in Budapest, Hungary, looking for work. There, his eyes glanced upon a beautiful eques-trian ballerina named Ermengilda, who captured the hearts and minds of the crowd with her grace and showmanship. More importantly, this talented beauty captured Napo-leone’s heart.

However, since Napoleone was a clown, Ermengilda’s father saw him as beneath her and disapproved of their relationship. The two ran away to Venice, Italy and founded the cir-cus that still bears their name. Over

the generations, the circus survived wars and political upheaval in Italy and the rest of Europe.

Alberto Zoppè, Napoleone’s great-grandson, inherited the circus almost 100 years later. A grand equestrian in his own right, Alberto toured Europe with the circus since his youth, forg-ing many unique friendships along the way, including one with famed actor/director Orson Welles. Welles, who was working in Rome at the time, persuaded Alberto to take a role in a small fi lm about the circus being shot in London.

Alberto was then offered a job by John Ringling North of Ringling Brothers fame, who was putting to-gether the circus acts for Cecil B. DeMille’s Oscar-winning fi lm, The Greatest Show on Earth.

Alberto was hesitant to leave his family circus in Italy for America, but North was persistent and offered to loan the family circus an elephant for the show as long as Alberto worked for him. He obliged and was promi-nently featured in the fi lm.

Alberto would remain in America, producing circuses for Ringling and starting his own family. Together with his wife Sandra, Alberto has ushered in a new generation to continue the family tradition. Their children, Giovanni, Tosca and Carla, along with their spouses, have all been active at one time or another in the family business.

Giovanni revived the Zoppè Family Circus in America ten years ago, and has since been building its reputa-tion with audiences and critics as an enchanting exhibition of traditional European circus. Giovanni credits his family with helping to maintain

the grand traditions. He is especially

grateful to his father, who unfortu-

nately passed away in 2009 before

meeting the 7th generation of circus

performers to bear the Zoppè name.

Giovanni’s son Julien was born in

2010 and is already in the ring with

his family learning this traditional art

of circus.

The Zoppè circus is unapologetically

authentic, from its intimate one ring

500+ seat tent with wood-plank

bleachers to a performance that in-

cludes small animal acts, trapeze

acrobatics and the kind of grand-

gesture, silent comedy perfected by

Charlie Chaplin.

About the

Page 4: 46th Annual Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival Guide

Veneto is a replica of the pioneering tent that Alberto Zoppè created in 1952.

Alberto’s son Giovanni Zoppè says his father’s tent was the fi rst to use four rather than two poles, bringing the audience closer to the ring and allowing for a more participatory show. He also claims Alberto was fi rst

to put a hole at the top of a tent, al-lowing hot air to escape. In the more than 50 years since, many other cir-cus companies have copied the for-mat, including Big Apple and Cirque de Soleil, according to Zoppè. The cream-colored tent, named Veneto after the region in Italy where Alber-to was born, sports an antique feel. Five years in the making, the tent is a massive structure that stands 63 feet high and 88 feet round. Fifteen men are needed to assemble the tent, which will comfortably seat up to 800 while keeping every single audience member no farther than 20 feet away from the performance ring. Veneto is made from special blackout tent material imported from France that creates a traveling the-ater. The Zoppè Italian Family Circus is one of the last one-ring circuses traveling the United States and Colo-rado is one of the lucky states they visit. The 2015 Colorado Tour is from Aug 14th thru Sep 7th. For informa-tion on booking the Zoppe’ Circus for your city or town contact Gina at 303.726.6111 or [email protected]

On any given weekend in Colorado be-tween Memorial Day and Labor Day you can fi nd hundreds of events to at-tend and it seems there are more pop-ping up every day themed in every-thing imaginable. The competition is fi erce for festivals and events to attract guests to their specifi c event. What makes festivals successful and how do they sustain in an economy where the dollars for entertainment are less than in the past? A festival is run like any other business except it has only a few days to make what a business would make in a year and if the weather is bad on those few days then the festival rev-enues are affected which is why spon-sorship is a big part of festival business. Sponsorship comes in many forms from actual cash donations to budget relieving in-kind donations of products, services and volunteer time. All of these things come into play like piec-ing together a puzzle and help festivals meet their operational goals. Sponsors have many reasons for aligning with events but the main purpose is to be seen in the communities they operate, serve or just to be present where their customers or potential customers can see them, meet them, etc. “Sponsor-ship today is not what it used to be 20 years ago in the event industry, it takes more creativity to engage sponsors in today’s economy” says Gina Hallisey, Executive Director of the Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival. Larger donors are expecting to see a return on their in-vestment which is tricky for a festival where the value is really in the market-ing and alignment with the event, not something you can equate in revenue coming through their doors. Today we see sponsors who are willing to put funds toward an event if it makes sense for their business marketing model or we see sponsors who are seeking more engagement with the guest, what we call experiential marketing. Face to face advertising has always been an effective use of marketing dollars for a business and a festival is a perfect set-ting with so many people in one place. Event planners have to get more cre-ative in activating sponsorships so the funds are spent wisely and it’s a win-win for both the festival and the spon-sor. When it makes sense to support the event and it’s fun to be involved sponsors are more apt to come back year after year.

The Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival is one of the longest running festivals in Colorado, entering its 46th year. With-out strong community support, great festival committees, volunteers and fi nancial support from sponsors the

Carnation Festival would not have sur-vived for so long. Having its share of tough times like all festivals, the Car-nation Festival has continued to fi nd ways to grow the event over the years reaching attendance numbers current-ly in the 25,000+ range. In 2012 with the addition of the Zoppe’ Circus as a main attraction, the Carnation Festival took a turn in a new direction by pro-viding ticketed entertainment to help offset festival expenses. Like many other large festivals in Colorado, the Carnation Festival has also become a ticketed festival so all food, beverages and activities require the offi cial festival ticket for purchasing. Only the midway artisan vendors are allowed to sell their wares for cash. Becoming a ticketed festival allows the event to also earn a percentage of the revenue on the sale of food, beverages, rides, games, etc. It is also easier for the guest to shop - they just purchase tickets at one of the festival ticket booths when they arrive via cash or credit card and can use the tickets anywhere on the festi-val grounds- even circus tickets can be purchased with the festival tickets. The value of each ticket is $1.00. The tran-sition will take a few years for guests to get the hang of and it’s defi nitely more to manage for the festival but by having all the revenue run through the festival via the ticket system it also allows tracking. Sponsors and ven-dors like to know there is a process for showing growth from year to year. So you might ask… if the festival is mak-ing all this money where does it go. It’s simple. The on-site revenue along with sponsorships pay for all the things called the “draws” that get you to go to the event for a fun experience and in the process the festival can also make money to help pay for next year’s festi-val. Things like two nights of fi reworks, live music on two stages, free to low cost kids activities plus facilities such as tents, potties, fencing, etc. (so you can attend a nice looking safe festival) are all expenses of doing business as a festival but what the Carnation Festival is most proud of is the amount of rev-enue the Wheat Ridge community and service clubs such the Wheat Ridge Rotary and Optimists are able to make at the festival. The business of most festivals is to make money just for the festival but for the Wheat Ridge Carna-tion Festival, a 501c3 non-profi t organi-zation; the goal is to continue to grow and improve a long standing event that Wheat Ridge can be proud of and help the community businesses, schools and service clubs who participate grow their organizations. I think that’s called win-win in the festival world.

The Business of FestivalsWhy community support is crucial for survivalCongratulations 2015

Kevin began his career as a Wheat Ridge Police of-fi cer on February 1, 1980 as a patrolman. He was a member of the K-9 team and the fi rst ever SWAT team. He had various spe-cial assignments in Investi-gations, Crisis Intervention Team, Jefferson County Critical Incident Response team and the Traffi c Team. Kevin was a member of a team of detectives to in-vestigate the tragedy at Columbine High School.

In May of 1999, he was pro-moted to Sergeant. As a Sergeant he supervised offi cers in Patrol, Investi-gations, School Resource Offi cers and Crime Pre-vention. He coordinated the investigation into the shooting at Platte Canyon High School. During his tenure Kevin revitalized the Wheat Ridge Police Department’s Volunteer Program and participated in several committees to provide better service to Wheat Ridge citizens and to the offi cers who pro-vide the services.

Kevin has received 11 med-als of commendation and numerous letters of appre-ciation from the Chief of Police, City Council Mem-bers and citizens.

In 2007, Kevin began shav-ing his head each year to raise money for the St. Bal-drick’s Foundation. In any year over 175,000 children are diagnosed with cancer. Kevin believes that shav-ing his head is a small sac-rifi ce, compared to what the children must endure.

Kevin and his wife Ker-sten have three daughters, Crystal, Carie and Katelyn and fi ve grandchildren. Kevin enjoys building log furniture and house de-cor out of standing dead aspen and affectionately calls this sawdust therapy.

Kevin retired from the Wheat Ridge Police De-partment on June 19, 2015 after a very successful career. Kevin considers it an honor and privilege to have served the citizen’s and community of Wheat Ridge for over 35 years and is very honored to be selected as the Grand Mar-shal of the 2015 Carnation Festival Parade.

CountessJANEECE HOPPE

Janeece Hoppe has been a part of Wheat Ridge since 2010 when she and her business partner (aka hus-band Nathan) purchased the property at 7018 West 38th Avenue. They remod-eled the property and it is now home to their business Compass Construction. Janeece, Nathan and their three girls moved to Wheat Ridge in 2011 and they en-joy the great amenities that Wheat Ridge has to offer for their family. Janeece joined the board of Wheat Ridge 2020 in 2011, a few months later she fi lled the empty Treasurer seat. She now serves as president of the Wheat Ridge 2020 board as well as serving on the board for the Wheat Ridge Business District. Ja-neece is one of the three founding members of Live Local, a program of Wheat Ridge 2020.

One of the many keys to the Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival’s consis-tent success throughout the years is the commitment of organizers on keeping it local, and the trend holds steady again this year.

“We have a really great local fl avor this year,” said Gina Hallisey, event producer. “People love all the tradi-tions like the parade and spaghetti dinner, but we have a lot of new fea-tures as well. It’s really grown into a bigger, better event due to the sup-port of the City of Wheat Ridge, the event’s title sponsor.”

The Wheat Ridge Rotary will be serv-ing in the Main Stage Beer Garden, and the Wheat Ridge Optimists will be serving in the Midway Beer Sta-tion, while Brewery Rickoli is at the Crafters Bar in the Food Court, as is Silver Vines Winery.

In the food court, local businesses Luke’s: A Steak Place, iPie Pizza, Ice-box Delights, Large Marge’s Philly Cheesesteak, Kare Bear Bakery and

Dragon Sauces will all be providing food for hungry visitors.

“We’ve not participated in the festi-val before, but we’re looking forward to bringing our philly cheesesteaks and homemade potato chips to the

event,” said Brett Caron, co-owner of Large Marge’s Philly Cheesesteak. “We’ve been looking for a way to get some more exposure, and what better way than to be part of such a great community event.”

The Wheat Ridge High School cheer-leaders will have a dunk tank on the midway and the WRHS Stem Car will be displayed as well. Pietra’s Restau-rant and the Wheat Ridge Fire De-partment will put on the Spaghetti Dinner and the Wheat Ridge Police Department hosts the Bike Safety Rodeo.

Many of the midway vendors are from Wheat Ridge, like Wardle Feed, Wheat Ridge Parks and Recreation, Tigar Gymnastics, Man Cave Colo-rado, Personal Achievement Martial Arts, Swim Otters Swim & Fitness, Illuminada, Mary Kay Cosmetics, i9 Sports, and Bloodhound Man Track-ers.

“This is the fi fth Carnation Festival we’re a part of. We always have a booth, and some of our kids partici-pate in the parade,” said Bradie Walls, communications person with TIGAR Gymnastics and Cheer. “We have parents and some of the athletes do-

ing demos, and we have handouts and goodies for people who come by.”

The family-oriented nature of the event fi ts perfectly with TIGAR’s ap-proach to gymnastics. Walls said the gym works with around 750 families, many of them from the surrounding area.

“There is always a great crowd at the festival — so many fantastic people come through,” she said. “So many different families come through, and we get to show them what we enjoy doing.”

Some of the many Wheat Ridge business sponsors include Qual-ity Auto Care, DaVita, First Bank, Medved, Right Coast Pizza, Colorado Insurance Specialists, Wheat Ridge Poultry, Comfort Inns, Kettleson Campers, GIA insurance, Seyfer Au-tomotive, Colorado Plus Brew Pub, PG Construction, Sons of Italy Lodge No. 2075, Neighborhood Gazette, Lutheran Medical Center Foundation, Young’s Market, and the Swiss Cot-tage Flower & Gift Shop.

“Every year it gets better and better,” Hallisey said.

Forty-six years in, and the Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival is still find-ing ways to surprise and delight peo-ple, and this year is no exception.

There are new and updated features for all ages at this year’s festival, from full size carnival rides and water bub-bles in the Kids Zone and profession-al midway games to performances by teen bands and some of the finest Italian automobiles around.

“We’ve taken over the whole park,” said Gina Hallisey, event producer. “We’ve expanded all our food offer-ings, have turned the whole area into a beer garden, and have all kinds of carnival activities for people.”

One of the top new events is the Au-tomezzi exhibit, which showcases all manner of Italian sportscars, motor-cycles and scooters. Visitors will be able to check out Alfa Romeo, DeTo-maso, Ferrari, Fiat, Lamborghini, Lancia, Maserati automobiles, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Aprilia motorcycles, Ves-pa and Lambretta scooters. The Au-tomezzi raises funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The other marquee addition is per-formances by young musicians host-ed by the Blue Star Connection orga-nization, which provides access and ownership of musical instruments and therapy for children and young adults with cancer and other serious challenges.

“We’ve grown all over the US in the past ten years and are active in many different children’s hospitals,”

said founder John Catt. “The instru-ments we provide help these kids get through difficult times and situations - from fighting for their lives to deal-ing with every day ailments like au-tism or cerebral palsy.”

The performers Blue Star are pre-senting include Paradox, OUR GEN-ERATION, Emma Marie and others. Catt said he likes his musicians to perform in as many events as pos-

sible, and the Carnation Festival had finally grown large enough to get in-volved.

“These acts are pretty polished, and people are really, really surprised at how good these performers are. They’re just going to get up there and rock it,” Catt said. “I’m so proud of these kids who want to get up there and help other kids.”
