This research will be part of the Project MODSCAPES, funded by the HERA Programme (Humanities in European Research Area) in the framework of the HERA JRP call “Uses of the Past”. The MODSCAPES consortium includes experts in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, planning, art history, and anthropology:

MODSCAPES deals with rural landscapes produced by large-scale agricultural development and colonization schemes planned in the 20th century throughout Europe and beyond. Conceived in different political and ideological contexts, such schemes were pivotal to nation-building policies. They provided a testing ground for the ideas and tools of environmental and social scientists, architects, engineers, planners, landscape architects and artists, which converged around a common challenge. Their implementation produced new rural landscapes, which have seldom been considered as a transnational research topic. Hence, MODSCAPES aims to raise awareness around this shared cultural heritage which stands today as a tangible evidence of recent European history.Introducing the concept of landscape as a unifying paradigm for a trans-disciplinary approach to the built environment and intangible legacies (the related cultural and socio-political context), this project aims to bridge research, practice, and policies. Hence, it aspires to test research outcomes against the current challenges faced by modern rural landscapes as a resource for future ‘reflective societies’ and ‘inclusive environments’ (Horizon 2020).

Educational objectivesAt the end of the Doctoral Programme, the Candidate will have expertise in issues related to the optimization of SHM systems for structures and infrastructure aimed at their integrity management.

Knowledge on innovative SHM techniques based on strain nanosensors will also be acquired and will be valuable for the construction market and, in particular, for those private or public companies involved in asset maintenance of structures and infrastructures.

Besides acquiring skills in the field of research development and management, it is expected that the candidate will develop a publication record in recognized international journals and conferences.

Methods and techniques that will be used to carry out the researchMODSCAPES combines research-driven and bottom-up participatory activities based on the collection, treatment, elaboration, and critical discussion of visual data and multiple narratives regarding. Thus, MODSCAPES’ research methodology combines archival and fieldwork research with bottom-up data collection. The novel element here is the comparative methods, for which there is an urgent need. To achieve this, research is being carried out in five core thematic research-driven Work Packages (WPs 1 to 5) carried out under the scientific supervision of one leading and one supporting partner, each following an ad hoc research protocol. WPs 1 to 4 (Documenting Agricultural Development Colonisation Projects /Schemes ; Physical legacies ; Sociocultural impacts ; Memories and perceptions ) are conceived to consolidate research-driven and bottom-up knowledge around the topic, while WP5 (Changes and challenges) aims to open new policy-oriented and design-oriented research directions in the field.

At the end of the research project the candidate will have acquired skills and expertise to operate in the fields of architectural and urban design.

Skills of the candidate

Job opportunitiesThese will concern five focus areas suggested in the call:

• Changing uses of (different) pasts.• Uses of the past for identity construction and institutional embedding of norms and values.• Uses of the past in media, material culture and public space. (>>> WP4).• Uses of the past: transnational/international/national and regional dimension, including globalization.

(Throughout)• Uses of the past: impact on solving current problems, decision making and future policies.

In addition, modscapes attributes a central importance to dissemination and knowledge exchange activities. It engages with diversified audiences, from scholars and academia, to broad public.
