PARISH STAFF MASSES OF THE WEEK

What does it mean to be an active Catholic? Those seeking to celebrate Marriage, have children baptized, or have a letter signed to serve as sponsors for Confirmation or Baptism should be parishioners and active, practicing Catholics. To be considered active, one must have been registered in the parish for at least three months, attend Mass regularly, and be committed to a stewardship of time, talent, and treasure. We encourage all parishioners to become active in one of the parish organizations.

In a community as large as Our Lady of Hope, our most effective means of verifying active participation is through the use of parish offertory envelopes or electronic giving, such as Faith Direct. If you choose not to participate in the support of the parish, or are unable to contribute at this time, please note your prayerful support on your envelope and place it in the weekly offertory. We will then be aware of your continued participation, and you will not be noted as "inactive" on our parish roster.

PARISH INFORMATION

Baptism & Baptism Class: Baptisms are held on Sundays at 1:30 p.m. The baptism class for parents is held one Saturday a month at 11:00 a.m. Please call the Parish Secretary to pre-register for the next available class. Sacrament of Matrimony: In accordance with the regulations of the Bishop of Arlington, couples must contact a priest and begin preparation at least six months prior to the wedding. Parish registration and active participation for a minimum of three months is required before preparation may begin. Couples who are living together will be asked to live separately during the preparation time as living together before marriage is sinful and harmful to the future marriage.

First Communion: For Children: Generally, First Communion is received when a child is in second grade. Preparation for First Communion is a two year process, and students must complete both first and second grade classes before receiving Holy Communion. Please contact the Religious Education Office with questions. Sacramental Preparation for Adults (RCIA): Adults who wish to receive Baptism, First Communion, and/or Confirmation are invited to attend the Inquiry Class on Thursday evenings. Please contact the Parish Secretary or visit the website to register.

Father Anthony J. Killian, son of Anthony and Barbara Killian, grew up in Philadelphia. After graduating from Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales (now De Sales University) in 1985, he continued his studies at Lehigh University, obtaining a degree in Government. He worked for the U.S. government as an Imagery Analyst for sixteen years before discerning God’s call to the priesthood. Father Killian attended Mount Saint Mary Seminary, where he earned a Master of Divinity and a certificate in Hispanic Ministry. He was ordained a priest by Bishop Paul Loverde on June 14, 2008, and just celebrated the 12th anniversary of his ordination. Father Killian’s assignments as a parochial vicar include: Blessed Sacrament in Alexandria (2008-2013); St. William of York in Stafford (2013-2016); St. John the Apostle in Leesburg (2016-2019); and he joins us after a year at St. Anthony of Padua in Falls Church. Our Lady of Hope is his first assignment as pastor, and we are excited to welcome him to our parish family!

ABOUT FR. KILLIAN

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Greetings in the Lord Jesus Christ! My heart has been filled with anticipation of arriving at Our Lady of Hope in order to serve you as your new pastor. I am very happy and yet humbled that Bishop Burbidge chose to send me here after the many fruitful years of ministry of Father Saunders, the founding pastor. Together with Fa-ther Saunders and the parish staff, you have handed on an important legacy in Potomac Falls: a beautiful Catholic Church and school.

Our task, dear brothers and sisters, is to create the next chapter in the life of our parish. Quite simply, we have one goal in our lives: to grow in holiness by living the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the help of God’s grace. The parish is the place of encounter with Christ who wishes to bestow his grace upon us. Through the sacraments, we are renewed in our mission to proclaim Christ as the one Lord of all men. This is what gets me up in the morning each day in order to serve the People of God as a priest.

I look forward to getting to know each of you as together we continue this tremendous adventure in the Faith of Jesus Christ.

Sincerely,

Father Anthony J. Killian

A NOTE FROM OUR NEW PASTOR

One day Elisha came to Shunem, where there was a woman of influence, who urged him to dine with her. Afterward, whenever he passed by, he used to stop there to dine. So she said to her husband, “I know that Elisha is a holy man of God. Since he visits us often, let us arrange a little room on the roof and furnish it for him with a bed, table, chair, and lamp, so that when he comes to us he can stay there.” Sometime later Elisha arrived and stayed in the room over-night. Later Elisha asked, “Can something be done for her?” His servant Gehazi answered, “Yes! She has no son, and her husband is getting on in years.” Elisha said, “Call her.” When the woman had been called and stood at the door, Elisha promised, “This time next year you will be fondling a baby son.”

2 KINGS 4:8-11, 14-16A

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

Ps. 89:2-3, 16-17 , 18-19

R./ For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

Brothers and sisters: Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life. If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over him. As to his death, he died to sin once and for all; as to his life, he lives for God. Consequently, you too must think of yourselves as dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus.

ROMANS 6:3-4, 8-11

Jesus said to his apostles: “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

"Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple— amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.”

MATTHEW 10:37-42

Most holy Virgin Mary, Mother of God, immaculate in body and soul, look kindly on your children who implore your powerful prayers. The wicked serpent fiercely continues to attack and ensnare us, the poor children of Eve.

Dear Blessed Mother, our queen and our advocate, our Lady of Hope, who has crushed the head of the enemy, receive the petitions we place before you today; especially for the victims of abuse and all human cruelty, / for the holiness of our clergy, and for healing within our Church.

We implore your prayers, O gracious Advocate, that we may never fall to the snares of the devil, that we may arrive at the gates of salvation, and that amidst so many dangers, each one of us may once again become a sign of God’s holiness for all the nations of the world. Amen.
