on Friday, June 19. Thank you, Fr. Mariano, for your years of hard work and dedication to

St. Anthony of Padua Parish. May God bless you in the new chapter of your priesthood!

Fatherhood has its origins in God, who chose to reveal Himself to us as Our Father, sending his only Son for the sake of our salvation. Fathers therefore have a special role “in revealing and in reliving on earth the very fatherhood of God” (Familiaris consortio 25). Indeed, the role of the father “is of unique and irreplaceable importance” (FC 25).

Although society increasingly tells fathers that they have no say in the lives of their children before birth and fails to rec-ognize the dynamic and critically important role of fatherhood, it is both a biological and spiritual reality. Pope Saint John Paul II said fathers are called to exhibit “generous responsibility for the life conceived under the heart of the moth-er” (FC 25). They are uniquely entrusted with the protection and defense of both mother and child and, in this way, in safeguarding the sanctity of human life. Yet research continues to show that the top reasons women seek abortions in-clude lacking support from the child’s father and financial challenges, which are only exacerbated by a father’s absence.

As a Church community, we need to encourage and support men to follow the example of St. Joseph and embrace their various roles as father. Even if a man is not a parent, he is still called to spiritual fatherhood—a fatherhood that fosters others’ relationship with God, protecting them from evil and providing an example of Christ’s love.

St. Joseph, himself, was unexpectedly called to both practical and spiritual fatherhood, and amid very difficult circum-stances. But despite all obstacles, Joseph was faithful. He welcomed life, offering care and protection to Mary and Jesus. We pray that each expectant father will find courage in the example of St. Joseph and offer loving, life-affirming support to the mother of his child.

Catechism of the Catholic Church ~ Paragraph 719 John the Baptist is "more than a prophet." In him,

the Holy Spirit concludes his speaking through the prophets. John completes the cycle of prophets begun by

Elijah. He proclaims the imminence of the consolation of Israel;

he is the "voice" of the Consoler who is coming. As the Spirit of truth will also

do, John "came to bear witness to the light." In John's sight, the Spirit thus brings to completion the careful search of the prophets and fulfills the longing of the angels. "He on

whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit and I have seen and

have borne witness that this is the Son of God.... Behold, the Lamb of God."

La paternidad tiene sus orígenes en Dios, que decidió revelarse ante nosotros como Padre Dios enviando a su único Hijo para salvarnos. Por lo tanto, los padres tienen una función exclusiva y especial “revelando y reviviendo en la tierra la misma paternidad de Dios” (Familiaris consortio 25). En verdad la función de un padre “es de una importancia única e insustituible” (FC 25). Aunque la sociedad cada vez más les dice a los padres que no deberían tener voz ni voto en la vida de sus hijos antes del nacimiento y no reconoce y no reconoce el papel dinámico y crucialmente importante de la paternidad, es una realidad tanto biológica como espiritual. San Juan Pablo II dijo que los padres están llamados a exhi-bir una “generosa responsabilidad por la vida concebida junto al corazón de la madre” (Familiaris consortio 25). A ellos se les encomienda la protección y la defensa de la madre y del niño para, de esta manera, proteger la santidad de la vida humana. La comunidad ecle-sial necesita apoyar y animar a los hombres a seguir el ejemplo de san José, y aceptar gozosamente su función de padres. Incluso si un hombre no es padre, sigue siendo llamado a la paternidad espiritual: una paternidad que fomenta la relación de los demás con Dios, protegiéndolos del mal y proporcionando un ejemplo del amor de Cristo. Saint Cyril of Alexandria, Feast Day – June 27 Cyril was born in Alexandria, Egypt, and was the nephew of its patriarch, Theophilus. Classically

educated, he was ordained by his uncle, whom he succeeded as patriarch in 412. He had helped Theophilus

discredit and depose St. John Chrysostom from Constantinople, in what may have been a rivalry between

the two ancient sees. As patriarch, he exercised his authority hastily and violently, drawing severe criticism,

and was embroiled in heretical controversies, chiefly against Nestorius of Constantinople, who taught that Mary was not the mother of God. Cyril’s orthodoxy

eventually was upheld by pope and emperor. This most brilliant theologian of the Alexandrian tradition was

declared a doctor of the church in 1882; he is the patron of Alexandria.

Cirilo nació en Alejandría, Egipto, era sobrino de Teófilo quien era el patriarca de esa ciudad. Recibió una

educación clásica y fue ordenado por su tío, a quien sucedió como patriarca en el año 412. Cirilo ayudó a
