Eucharistic Adoration Eucharistic Adoration is available each Thursday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm in the Chapel. This is as close as we can come in this life to talking with God face to face.

The Rosary is a wonderful way to pray for people in your life. As Mary intercedes for us to the Father, so too can we intercede for those in our lives that need our prayers. If you would like to lead the rosary on Monday evenings, individually or as a family, please contact the church office at 205.822.9125 to schedule. Materials are provided in the chapel for the Rosary.

Financial Stewardship The US bishops’ pastoral on stewardship reinforces

today’s reading from 1 Corinthians: “Because its individual members do collectively make up the

Body of Christ, that body’s health and well-being are the responsibility of the members - the personal

Bread & Roses

Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19:23-24)

“The Gospel is Hard” by Dorothy Day

The basic outlines of Dorothy Day’s life are well known. A radical and a journalist who converted to Catholicism in 1927, she

cofounded the Catholic Worker movement in 1933 with an itinerant French Catholic social thinker, Peter Maurin. They started

a newspaper, opened houses of hospitality to respond to the immediate needs of the urban poor, and established farming

communes to house and give work to the unemployed. In short: “to create a new society within the shell of the old.” Day has

been called the “most significant, interesting, and influential person in the history of American Catholicism,” and the Catholic

worker has been described as “the most important radical Catholic movement in American history.”

Some quotes credited to Dorothy Day: You must take up your cross daily; where there is no love, put love and you will find

love; we love God as much as we love the one we love least; as breath is to the body, prayer is to the soul. She said often,

“Every act of faith increases your faith.” Faith, like love, must be fervent, passionate; it is purchased only with one’s heart’s

blood. It must be sought after, suffered for, put to the test, deepened, renewed, and taken joy in. “The Gospel is hard,” she

has said. “Loving your enemies, and the worst of your own household, is hard.” (Patrick Jordan, Commonweal, Jan 25, 2013) If interested in becoming involved with the Seamless Garment Committee, call Tom & Elsbeth Germanson at 205.565.3456.

2012 Statements End of the year statements were mailed this week. Some parishioners may receive 2 statements. Please combine these 2 statements for your total contribution for 2012. This was due to a change made in the software mid-year. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

On Sunday, February 10, a group from Prince of Peace will serve lunch

to the needy at the Church of the Reconciler. This is a wonderful

opportunity for you to put into practice the Stewardship Pillars of

Hospitality and Service. Volunteers are needed to provide food and

desserts and help serve the meal on that Sunday. If you would like to

help with this ministry, please call Cheryl Walker at 205.949.2907 or

205.540.7691.

Stewardship: Parishioners Answering God’s Call On a recent inclement weather day, roads were getting hazardous and it was determined that school would dismiss early for the safety of the students. A parishioner recognized that her neighbor would have difficulty leaving work in the downtown area to get to the school in time to pick up her children. She called her neighbor at work and offered to pick up her children at school and take them home with her for the afternoon until the parents could get home. This unselfish act of Christian hospitality was much appreciated by the neighbor.

Help us! Submit your stewardship story examples to [email protected]. They may be edited for space consideration.
