THE PLEASURE LOVER Is back In studio g, (Top Of The Pops to you) along with his backing band, The Vagabonds. Good times reach a climax when Jimmy James gets up on stage and swings free and furiously.

He Is a revelation to watch:' the podgy performer whips up party time like its the most natural thing in the world and enjoys himself so much It's quite touching.

Later . . . back in Jimmy's dressing room his mood doesn't Change one Iota. This guy is 100 per cent serious about being a gas on stage but even off It he's just as amiable.

"I make music for people to enjoy, so they can be happy. I don't like all this self Indulgence, It's a bore and I get mad when I think about performers who go on stage half hearttdly and give the audience a load of rubbish. Unfortunately just because they're superstars the audience laps it up,"

Super star he ain't, Entertainer of the highest order he is.

"People still don't believe me when I say that 'I'll Go Where Your Music Takes Me' was my very first hit in Britain. They think Ito kiddin' em on, "

But It was of course, And as they say when the overdue train's in sight 'It's been a long Ume comin .

"Actually I dldn 1 mind the wait," he giggles, revealing ultra - white bright teeth which would upstage even the SR ad.

'I've always had a lot of work in clubs and always had people come see my act. I've managed to keep my feet level on the ground. Sure there were times when I felt I was glttln' nowhere fast - particularly when all that flower power -thing was popular and that heavy rock era - but music goes in cycles and I knew soul would never fade out completely, "

His biggest break came when he met Biddu -

overlord producer / w rlter of sophisticated soul music.

Biddu (also muter mind behind Tins Charles and dare I mention karate Chop trouper Carl Douglas). took him under his wing and gave Jimmy the hit hed'd been hoping for,

Now (and this is why we're gathered together today) Jimmy looks like he's all set for hit number two with 'Now Is The Time' which isn't as soul oriented as 'l U Go Where' but nonetheless Is a soap little pop tune with an enigmatic, unforgettable Chorus hook.

"R's on the latest abum which la called 'Now', but the single version had to edited down from six to three minutes and the whole thing rearranged "

It's hard to imagine say Big Demis.Roussos in a balletic pose performing floor exercises along- side Olga Korbut or fragile Elton competing against buxom 19 - stone Russian lady shot putters or even dahling Freddie Mercury riding alongside Princess Annie. Back to front with Genesis WHEN IS a drummer not a drummer? When he le lead singer with Genesis, of course.

Phil Collins has successfully made the big transition from being behind the kit to becoming the man out front.

It was not an easy move to make, since he had to ell the place left empty by the departure of their entertaining wordmonger Peter Gabriel, but Judging by the success of their last album and recent tours, those who predicted their downfall when he left were rather premature with their prophecies.

Genesis have gone from strength to strength. developing gradually to emerge scone of Britain's most inventive bands of the Seventies.

They have only had one big single, 'Wardrobe', but keep on trying in that field, while their albums are Inatant best sellers and their concert appear- ances Boon sellout.

The Genesis story begins In the late Sixties when basa player Michael Rutherford. keyboards player Tony Banks and Gabriel met at college. With Tony Philips on guitar and John Mayhew on drums they made the first Genesis albums 'From Genesis To Revela lion' for Decca in 101íP. and 'Trespass' for Quart ama the next year.

"1 came In six years ago " Phil takes up the history. "They were working as a four piece as they couldn't find a guitarist. The drummer had been kicked Out and the guitarist left of his own accord.

--A 7, , .f OW, , J/` .. .'.

Steve (Hackett) was advertising for work, we saw him and he had a good head for sound, so he was In."

There then followed a long consolidation period, endless slogging round the UK circuit, package tours and ever improving albums, which contain Genesis classics, still called for today at their gigs, and 'Nursery

yme', 'Foxtrot', 'Sell Ing England By The Pound', are still Rya liable and In demand.

Gabriel was getting more and more involved, in the theatrical aspect of his act

After listening to about 400 tapes and seeing 40 people they were no satisfied they had found a

substitute. "I wanted to have a go,

but was waiting to be asked," admits Phil. "1 realised It wouldn't be easy, being the drummer. but most of material was going to be accoustic at that lime, so I had s

fling." The fling worked - al

proved by 'A TrIck Of The Tall', the first album minus Gabriel, and the best seller to date.

But another problem had now arisen. With Phil taking lead vocals, who wan going to drum? Phil still anted to do the recording side, but suitable tan ~ate was required for live work

In Bill Bruford, former Yes man and a much in demand session worker, they found first the right person, though he Is not a perma rant member. Had' they been worried the change of personnel would not work?

"Hmm, not realty," Phil muses, rubbing his beard. "As far an we were concerned the album was good and we knew we could perform it. But we were surprised when the album came straight in al number twee In the chart,. That ',wetly put a full stop at the end of the sentence

"We're really happy the way things ar

going," says Phil. "At last the music Is shining through."

After Mx weeks in rehearsal a warm-up tour In Canada reassured their situation, and it has been a success story ever since.

"What we need now is a hit single in America," Phil aid. "It's okay to have an album high in the charts but tt is a single in the top 30 that really counts there.

"I think our music le

suitable chart material, 1

mean we write songs rather then mini -operas, and the emphols has always been on songs with melody and a strong honk."

StYlístics smooth the way THE STYLISTICS ' Sa- teen Bars' (HbL 6105 059) Eddie Calvert Intro Into shuffle smoothy with those oh so false-etto vocals. Brilliant Hugo and Luigi production and a cert natch

RALPH CARTER: 'Love Is Like Art Itching In My Heart' (Mercury 6187379)

Beautiful rendering of the old Motown song that hustles and shuffles and has you singing along on the chorus His last single, 'Extra Extra' was huge in the States and well received here. This should finally do it for the young mart

THE MONKEES: 'Day- dream Believer (Arista 63) A nostalgia classic of the first order that should incite a whole new generation to search out the real meaning behind those lyrics.

SWEET SENSATION: 'Mall Train' (Pys 7N 45613) New lead singer but old time la - la hook melody that moves along with all

toes tapping. Much too simple but still a

contender.

SUNFIGHTER: 'Drag Race O vain' (EMI 2493) Mediocre toned - down Sweet influences plus a production big enough to cover al the cracks and every gimmick imagine able from spoken bit to false ending but it will get you a place on TOTP and presumably one In the charts.

BELLAMY BROTHERS: 'Satin Sheets' (Curb K 16775) None of the flow of the lest one and an excruciating chorus hook that goes: 'Hallelujah, let me sock it to ye' but that nice down home feel is catchy in the Carter For President way.

SPEEDY KEEN: 'Your Love' (Island WIP 6314) Insidious repetitive hymn from Speedy that carries the listener well, finishing lust before it turns into a

dirge. A clever man and a

hopeful winner.

SHEER ELEGANCE: 'ICs Temptation' (Pys 7N 25715) A more positive arrange- ment doesn't really carry this 'jailbah' sex song that relies too heavily on a

minimal chorus hook. Nevertheless they haven't failed so far and even mediocrity can squeeze into charts.

HOT BETWEEN THE WRAPPERS HOT CHOCOLATE: 'Man to Man IRAK SRAK 522) Errol and the boys third album to date should keep the fans occupied while they take on America The title track has already proved itself, and there's the 'Sexy Thing' follow up'Don t Stop It Now' and 'You Could Have Been A Lady' for good measure. The gentler side is displayed on 'Seventeen Years Of Age', while another title 'Sex Appeal' sums up the basic appeal of

their own brand of funk, an assumption further confirmed by examination of the lyrics of 'Sugar Daddy' and 'Heaven Is In The Back Seat Of My Cadillac'. The hand's own sound is rounded off by the use of CCS's brass section to add more variety. Hot Chocolate have a huge following worn by their exciting concerts and several hits. This album will give a lot of pleasure to them all,

SASSAFRAS: 'Riding High' (Chrysalli CHR 1100) A much improved product from a much improved band you may have had the chance to catch In your neighbour- hood. They are already darlings of the college and club circuit and 'Riding High' shows why. Try 'New York Collapse', which opens the second side, for a starter, it begins with sirens wailing and then belts through at varying speeds and directions which even- tually grind to a halt in

- time for the bird calls and whistling of 'Small Town Tall', a neat choice for single release and catchy enough to please the masses, as Is 'Nothin' To

Lose' with It's effective catchl(ne. This set goes a long way towards illustrating that contem- porary rock doesn't always have to sound the same.

David Brown THE MANHATTANS (CBS 815131 Having established them selves with 'Kiss And Say Goodbye', this album is a logical next step, in - eluding the smash hit and further examples of their deep soul, Vocally they are one of the best new groups to hit us. using strong harmonies, emo- tional lead ins and spoken segments, plus powerful lead vocals. The material e mainly of a similar pace and sentiment as the

single, though there are one or two up tempo numbers such as the opening title 'Searching For Love' and one of the least successful numbers 'La La La Wish Upon A Star' which is pure slopsville But on the strength of 'Kiss' and this album we should hear a lot of this band and it's a good trailer for a potential visit In the near future.

TO BEAM or not to beam that Is the question!

When you've gone to a lot of trouble, not to mention expense, featuring a laser light show in your act, It's a bit much when someone comes along and says It can't be done.

That was the problem facing Electric Light Orchestra at their recent London tour date. The band sold let there be tight. but the GLC said "No way"

"We were very dis- appointed about that," apologised drummer Bev Bevan. "I don't under- stand the technical side, but we had a qualified operator who was 11-

"The lasers have been In use without trouble on our last tour in America and on moat of the Belt oh dates. But what can you do?

Asaazfng "We were particularly

sorry about London because there was a TV Crew getting in the way too. But the amazing thing was that the show still went well "

A chance to see ELO on tour is something ot a rarity in Itself now in tills country, since the sell of America is so strong

"There's no way we could have made money touring here," said Bev

It ,ands us money. There are seven of us In the

band plus all the crew, equipment and soon The funny thing Is that a lot of people still think you make a fortune touring here.

"As far as we are concerned a e like to play to please the fans, It's a loyalty thing And when we do play we tike to make an impression."

They certainly made an Impression with the recent tour. It will be the New Year at least until we see them again Until then there Is a new album to be finished off in Munich, then bark across the Atlantic to keep the customers satisfied over there.

Currently going up the US LP charts is an ELO compilation 'Ole ELO', which goes from '10638 Overture' onwards. BrU- an has often been slow to pick up on some of the band's material which has had great success in America, but renewed interest was heralded by their last album, frees which we've had three popular singles - 'Night Rider','Evtl Woman' and 'Strange Magic'.

From Island, the group Jumped quickly lo MCA where they released their second best album, amusingly UUsd 'Ws SUIT Ain't Got No Band'. It was from here that their theme song 'Good Old Acapella' emerged.

'Good Old Acapella' gave the group a big American hit and their old albums became hot stuff.

I DON'T know, these Rock `N' Roll people are getting as bad as film stars. Marriage, It seems, has little of no -sanctity when you're in a beat combo.

Take that Deep Purple for instance. Two of their wives divorced them this week - Mrs Lord because she'd been separated from Mr Lord for two years, and Mrs Blackmore because of Mr Blackmore's adultery.

1 don't know, and then they had the cheek to blame the break up of the marriages on 'groupies' - whatever they are. II'e always someone ede Isn't it dears?

Then later In the week the wife of the group's manager gave birth to a baby boy. Christopher Phillip, which la all very well you might think but right at the end of the work the Deep Purple group decided to split up and roans day.
