When you receive your 2010 membership card, you willnotice that there is a barcode on the back. This barcode is yourvery own and can be read by the barcode scanners at partici-pating Moss galleries when you present it to them whenmaking a P. Buckley Moss purchase. The purpose is to rewardyou with points for each purchase, which may be traded in fora gift certificate when you reach certain prescribed levels.

The lion’s share of the software has been written and we arenow entering the testing phase. After the dealers meeting,August 6-8, we hope to have the first galleries up and runningwith the program, and you will be able to benefit from a majornew members-only privilege.

To use you card, all you need to do is present it to your partic-ipating Moss gallery when you buy a piece of Pat’s art or one ofher gift items. The gallery software will record your purchaseand assign points to your rewards account equal to the dollaramount of your purchase.

When you have accumulated 500 points, the “first level”,you will be sent a $25 gift certificate to be used on a futurepurchase at any participating Moss gallery. The gallery willhonor the gift certificate and will in turn be reimbursed by P.Buckley Moss Galleries in the form of a credit to their accountfor the face value of the certificate. As you purchase more andyou reach higher levels, the gift certificates keep on coming.

To make it more fun, and so that you may accumulate pointsmore quickly, we are occasionally going to announce special,short-term rewards programs. For example, those Societymembers who attended the Williamsburg Convention andbought a piece of Pat’s art there will receive a special 25 pointbonus on top of their recorded purchase.

Full details on the program will be made available to youand the galleries as they are finalized. Please remember thatthe rewards program will “work” only with purchases of Pat’sart and does not include framing.

Dear Friends,

I would like to welcome the incoming Foundation Boardmembers. It is an exciting time as the Foundation moves forward, energized with fresh ideas from the newly merged Society andFoundation Boards.

Thank-you’s are in order for the people who began thisendeavor many years ago. The P. Buckley Moss Society had theforesight to create the Foundation and give it the mission topromote the integration of the arts into all educational programs, with a special focus on children who learn in different ways. Allof the Society and Foundation Board members have given muchto get the Foundation off the ground and make it work.

Welcome and encouragement needs to be extended to thoseBoard members who are continuing on as we begin the next stageof growth as a Foundation. Challenges lie ahead that will requirethe ingenuity and cooperation of all involved as we strive to reachmore and more people with our message.

We are working feverishly on this year’s Creative Minds Confer-ence, which will take place at the P. Buckley Moss Museum in

Waynesboro, Virginia, on October 23, 2010. The theme of theConference is “Voices from the Past, Envisioning the Future”. Iwould like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Society chap-ters that have helped by sponsoring teachers to attend past Confer-ences. In these hard economic times, many school systems havecut out teacher funding for conferences such as ours. Every dona-tion you make helps us in raising attendance and spreading ourprograms. Please check our website (www.mossfoundation.org)for updates on the Conference.

Sincerely,Patty MossPresidentP. Buckley Moss Foundation for Children’s Education

EDITOR’S NOTE: If you are interested in raising funds to send a teacher to theConference, you or your chapter may apply for a charity print to raffle off.Contact Lisa Champ at 1-800-430-1320 or [email protected].

The Anne and Matt HarbisonScholarship is administered by theP. Buckley Moss Society and awards$1,500 to one high school seniorwith a certified language-relatedlearning difference who is pursuingpost-secondary education. TheAnne and Matt Harbison Scholar-ship is near and dear to Pat’s heart.“I have struggled my whole lifewith dyslexia,” says Pat. “As a

result, I understand how importantit is to recognize and reward theachievements and hard work ofchildren with learning differences.”

This year’s recipient is truly aremarkable young man. TaylorBohon is a senior at Cave SpringHigh School in Roanoke, Virginia, who plans to major in pre-law atHampden-Sydney College. Taylorhas long-term goals of becoming alawyer, running for elected office,

and possibly becoming Presidentof the United States one day. Ofhis future plans, Taylor says, “Iwant to bring my history, mypassion and my determination tomy career. Many told me all mylife, that college would never bepossible for ‘someone like me’. Ibeat those odds and I believe that‘someone like me’ can become theleader of this great country.”

Taylor has been diagnosed withdyslexia, dysgraphia, and an addi-tional disability that relates tovisual perception (1 of 9 diag-nosed in the country). Althoughhe does not have any physicalsight issues, Taylor sees in mosaicand does not see letters andnumbers in their entirety. Thiscombination of learning differ-ences led to Taylor’s being misun-derstood by many of his teachers.

Instead of giving up hope orlosing faith in himself, he workedhard to succeed. Taylor has devel-oped coping skills and usescomputer programs to assist inwriting, spelling, and reading. Helearns largely by what he is taughtverbally. Taylor has a strong workethic, dedication, and persever-ance. Pat is inspired by the worldaround her, whether it’s her familyand own life experiences or archi-tecture or nature. Pat’s artistic eyetakes great joy in the rich colors ofspring and fall and also in the crisp, clean lines of winter. Likewise, Pathas always been fascinated by theanimal kingdom.

Pat is not the type of artist whopaints wildlife in realistic detail, butinstead she captures the spirit of theanimal and its natural surround-ings. Pat’s expressive representationof animals elevates her subjects to asymbolic level. Her familiar geeseand horses, stripped of unnecessarydetail, are composed of bold, fluidlines that speak of the animals’grace, nobility, and natural equilib-rium. Most often, Pat’s animalsinhabit and preside over an orderlyworld; and, where they are depictedwith humans, they are uniformly inharmony with each other.

Some of Pat’s recent wildlifepaintings are a response to newsreports on the environment and

global warming, notably On theEdge (polar bears) and Winter Friends(penguins). Under the Sea capturesthe aquatic agility of the sea turtle, where the plant life itself is ajoyous, vibrant expression ofnature’s energy; all this perhapstempered by the daily news storiesof the oil spill in the Gulf, showingus a fragile world at risk.

From Pat’s travels, we have StillWaters (manatees in Florida), and arecent visit to Italy inspired severalnew pieces featuring mice. Themouse inspiration came when hergrandchildren’s cat decided to pres-ent Pat with the mouse it had justcaught.

Pat’s paintings of birds arecomposed in the tradition of the19th century artist, explorer, andornithologist John Gould. However, where Gould’s paintingsare technically precise, the result ofintense observation, Pat’s are moresuggestive and eloquent and trulyher own (Perfect Perch, Nesting Time, and As Light as a Thistle).
