TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — AUGUST 21, 2016

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

In his novel The Magic Mountain, the German author Thomas Mann describes how the visit of a young man to his cousin in a Swiss sanatorium ends up in a seven-year stay as his own health deteriorates. Once in the sanatorium the young man’s perception of space and time alters, and it is only with the advent of the First World War that he is jolted into leaving. Mann’s novel speaks to each of us, for we all seek to find refuge from the reality of life, and once in the security of our refuge it takes a momentous event to jolt us out. In scripture we are given the story of how human beings, through the sickness of sin, are driven from their home. The proph-ets are sent to help the people overcome this sickness, but the people prefer to remain in the false refuge of their sins. It will take a momentous event, the momentous event of human history, to jolt us out of our sin: the narrow door that is the cross of Jesus Christ.

At the time of Jesus there is evidence of various Jewish groups who claimed to be the true remnant of Is-rael, the few from among all those who called themselves Jewish who would be saved. Is this what Jesus came to establish: a small group of the chosen; the few from among the mass of humanity who are to be saved?

At first sight this is what Jesus seems to be say-ing in our Gospel Lesson: “many will try to enter and will not succeed”. Later, however, he refers to the prophetic vision of Isaiah that people from “east and west, from north and south, will come to take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God”. Any attempt to identify a small core or remnant in contrast to the mass of humanity runs against what Jesus is teaching. So how are we to understand the saying about the narrow door?

A door can seem narrow to us for two reasons. Firstly, if the door really is narrow relative to our size. Secondly, if, although the door is wider than our body, we are unsteady on our feet and so cannot get through it. It is in this second sense that Jesus talks of the narrow door of salvation. It is due to the sickness of sin that the door to salvation is narrow, for we prefer to remain in our

sins rather than accept the help of the one who can heal us and bring us through that door. We find ways of living with our sins, of avoiding the reality of our lives, so that when we are invited to enter into reality, to go through the narrow door, we grow resistant. It is with the shock of the crucifixion that we are jolted out of our complacency. We can only know Jesus Christ if we look upon the crucified one, but this is not the final word; for the one who is crucified will rise to new life. Our salvation will bring us to the glory of the heavenly banquet. In the cross the reality of this world is revealed, but that reality is not ultimately one of hopeless violence but of a transforming love, heal-ing us and raising us to new life.

All of us find times in our lives when we need the help of others. It is no different with the life of faith, except that in every moment of that life we need the help of Jesus Christ. The narrow door of our salvation is the help that God sends to each one of us in the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The life of a Christian is one that centers upon Jesus Christ and the help he sends to us.

Through sharing in the life of the Church we receive the help we need to find healing and begin our journey to the kingdom of God. On this journey we are transformed, so that we, as instruments of grace, become the means through which Christ’s healing and transforming presence is given to others. This journey will not be easy, as we will need to face our own frailty and the sickness of this world. Yet we do not do this alone, but through the help of Jesus Christ and those he sends to aid us in our struggles.

In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely—

visit them if you can. Please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the Faith and all who have died, especially G567 D’A85997:, C;<79 B5<89, N>?@A N>B>85, J:95C; S@>DEB:, M><7> FE9@>. Also, pray for the souls of the faithful departed of our Parish family.

May God always be pleased with us!

As we consider our Scripture Lessons for today, let us remember:

… that Jesus tells us that the door of salvation is a nar row door . The reason it is narrow is due to the sickness of our sin;

… that the crucifixion jolts us out of the complacency of our sin; and the final word is not, however, one of violence but of the risen Christ;

… and that our Chr istian lives are to center upon the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ, through which we are given healing for our sins and raised to the glory of the feast in the kingdom of God.

Let us open our hearts to the promptings of the Holy Spirit in our Gospel Lesson, and may God always be pleased with us. Amen!

SPREADING THE WORD “For behold, some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.” Luke 13:30

Our standards in our society are so different from God’s standards. We o"en rate or rank people by what they have, how powerful they are, or how successful they are. Jesus reminds us that God will not judge us by the same earthly standards.

We sincerely thank our parishioners who mail, deliver or electronically give your

weekly envelopes to the parish while you are out-of-town on vacations this summer.

As many of you understand, our parish expenses and obligations do not take a

vacation when you do, so it is very helpful to be able to rely on your continued support

even when you cannot personally attend Mass here.

A NEW TRADITION AT ST. ANN’S PARISH

This year, for the first time, St. Ann’s will celebrate the Christmas season by illuminating the buildings of our parish by erecting beautiful six foot real Christmas trees, decorated with white lights.

Each tree will be available to be memorialized for someone

living or deceased. The trees will be affixed with

a large plaque containing the name or names

to be memorialized.

On Saturday, December 10 after the 4pm Mass, we will gather outside our church for the blessing and lighting of the trees. They will remain lit each evening from 6pm-midnight through-out the entire Christmas season until the Feast of the Epiphany in January.

The cost to memorialize one of these beautiful trees will be $200.

This will help cover the cost of the trees, the lighting and the memorial donation.

The number of trees are limited, so look for the Reservation Form in the bulletin

in the next couple of weeks to reserve your tree.

The brilliance of the light of the New Born Savior will shine in Raritan this year in a new and exciting way.

For information, call the rectory at 908-725-1008.

We would like to thank FRANK KERR for being the coordinator at our parish for the Interfaith Hospitality Network in Som-erset County for the past 24 years.

We would like to

Dear Friends of St. Ann School,

I write a letter of welcome to teachers and families every year. This year I used a phrase that has been resounding in my soul every day since. I avoided the common welcome back, see you in September, and some of the other school clichés that are popular. With all sincerity, I sent a welcome home letter.

We call ourselves a school family. This is not just because we hang out together every day. We do not just dine together or share a common faith heritage. We form a family not by accident or because children grace our doorstep. No, we form a family by choice and by our actions.

So while each of us went away from home this summer, what is the welcome home going to be like. It is always marked by great excitement and joy. Teachers are happy to see one another but even happier to see the return of the children. They plan diligently for their arrival.

I remember the first few times I returned home from college. My father would meet me at the airport. A stoic gentleman, our hug was firm but gentle. The ride home was quiet. I held back tears of joy and he held back tears of the same. A big grin on his face, he would take the long way home from the airport. I think he was relishing his time with me before my mother would take over and monopolize my time until I had to leave again. We would stop for ice cream and tell stories of old times. It would suddenly seem as if I had never left. The old stories restored our bond. Life was good.

Mom had made my favorites for dinner. She would rush to the door as soon as she heard the car drive up. All the letters I had sent home were on the end table in the living room. They had been read many times. She bursts into tears and can barely talk as she hugs me. I am marked with the typical tiger stripe of her lipstick. We talked endlessly about everything. And life is good, yes indeed, good.

So it is with coming home to school. The teachers are all aglow at the thought of the coming of their beloved children. Recharged by the absence, the heart has grown fonder indeed. Teachers prepare all that will delight the returning ones. They have treats and surprises hidden in the alcoves of the classroom. All they can talk about is that first day, what it will be like, how wonderful the time is going to be.

Yes, the family is getting back together again. Yes, indeed, all is good, very good. For a little time, we all exclaim that all is right with the world. If you know someone for whom this is not true, consider inviting them home to our families. There is always room for one more at our table.

God bless you,

Sr. Mary Klersey, MPF St. Ann School Principal
