  • 2014ANNUAL REPORT

As CEO and Board of Trustee Chair for Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA we talk on the phone often. Nearly every conversation is about being prudent; acting toward the care of our camps and Berkshire Outdoor Centers future. As you can imagine, prudency is closely aligned to the fi nancial health of the overall organization.

In the mid 2000s Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA took on nearly $7 Million in debt to address a state mandated waste water treatment plant and fund a new Chimney Corners Camp Dining Hall following a disastrous dining hall fi re. On the heels of this debt, the 2008 stock market downturn impacted the camps and our families. Despite this fi nancial strain, the Board of Trustees and senior leadership partnered to:

grow the endowment by 77% to over $8 Million since 2008

increase our fi nancial aid to better serve our community by over 150% since 2005

increase our Annual Fund Campaign by 50% while doubling our donors since 2009

whittle down our debt with over $600,000 of our operating budget directed to debt payment to be fi nalized by 2025.

Fiscal responsibility does not stop there. Everyday our staff makes tough fi nancial decisions while maintaining quality program experiences for our campers, families and guests.

Changing Lives: The Campaign for Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA kicked off the public phase in 2014 and we are delighted with our communitys enthusiasm. Led by Campaign Chairs Jim Goldman and Amy Hurwitz Gutschenritter, this $12.35 Million effort has raised over $10 Million from parents, alumni and friends who want to secure the future of this special place in the Berkshires. We are humbled by these generous friends who respect our prudency and want to help us address our capital needs, our endowment needs and our Annual Fund needs through this comprehensive campaign. Because of Changing Lives, 2014 brought in over $2.1 million, with a little over $1,000,000 directed to capital, $870,000 to the Annual Fund and the remaining $200,000 to the endowment.

Financial security is always on our radar. Without it, there would be no Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA. A place as special and magical as Camp Becket, Chimney Corners Camp, Travel and Service Programs and the Berkshire Outdoor Center can only remain special with good, prudent, fi nancial planning and management.

For those of you who invested in Becket-Chimney Corners YMCAs 2014 prudency, thank you. For questions or information on our 2014 fi gures please contact Brenda Marsian, Chief Development Offi cer at (413) 822-7950.
