The Coach’s Corner

(8) I want to talk to you about a very wonderful thing called, love in action. Love in action means that you don’t just say you love someone; you show them you love them by what you say and do. Love is doing good for someone else whether you feel like it or not. That’s the way God loves us. Our God is a God of love. In fact, the Bible tells us in 1 John 4:8 that God is love. The greatest way God showed His love to us is when He sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for our sins. God wants us to be like Him. You see, God wants us to love like He does. He wants us to show love to everybody, all the time, in every way that we can. God had the Apostle Paul write Galatians chapter six to challenge and move us to love Him and to love others. Our key verse is Galatians 6:10. Let’s open our Bibles to Galatians 6:10. [Display Visual #1 then read Galatians 6:10.] In this verse, God is telling you that you must love others. We should love others and do good to them as often as we can. The Bible says that this is the law of Christ. You know what a law is don’t you? It’s a commandment or a rule that you must obey and follow. God commands you that you must love others as much as you love yourself. You love yourself, don’t you? You take care of yourself. You feed yourself. You Well, God tells you that you must love others that much. The law of Christ is to love others as you love yourself. So, God wants you to care about others and love them just like you care about yourself. We are going to take a close look at Galatians chapter six to see how we can show love to others. Let’s get started! Follow along as I read Galatians 6:1. [Read Galatians 6:1. Display Visual #2.] In this verse, God is telling you to help other people who have fallen into sin. He wants you to help them up, come along side of them, and show love to them. God wants you to be like Him. He helps people up because He loves them. [Display Visual #3.] (9a) Let’s suppose that you spent the night at a friend’s house. During the evening, his mom asked if he had any homework. Your friend lied and told his mom he didn’t have any. But you knew he did. The Bible teaches us that we must honor our parents, which means we should respect them. Your friend didn’t show respect to his mother and that was sin. The Bible says that lying is a sin, and sin is a big deal with God. God always sees our sin, and we will never get away with it. There will always be a price to pay for sin. Because you care about your friend and love him, you want him to admit he’s done something wrong. You want him to make things right with God. Would you love your friend enough to tell him that when he lied to his mom, he disobeyed God? God says you should love others that much. So, we can show love to others by helping them up when they have sinned and done something wrong. Let’s look at Galatians 6:2 which tells us about loving others. [Allow an Olympian to read Galatians 6:2, then display Visual #4.] In this verse, the Lord tells you that you should love others enough to help them with their heavy loads. Sometimes we face hard things in life. At times like that we may feel like we are carrying a heavy load all by ourselves. (1a) It’s as if you saw someone at school trying to carry a load of books and they were trying to balance them, but they kept dropping some of them. You could see they were having a hard time. Wouldn’t you want to try and help them? Well, how about if you knew someone whose parents were getting a divorce. They were really upset and looked sad all the time, going off by themselves. Having your parents get a divorce is a big load to carry. God would want you to help them carry that load. That’s what the Bible means when it says we should carry one another’s burdens. What are some ways you can help them carry that burden and load? [Allow children to respond: some possible answers are; praying for them, ask them if they want to talk about it, listen to them, be their friend.]

Would someone read Galatians 6:6 for us? [(Allow a child to read the verse then display Visual # 5.] In this verse, God tells you that you should love the people who teach you the Bible. So let me ask you, who are the people that teach you the Bible? [Allow the children to respond: pastors, Sunday school teachers, Olympian Coaches, and our parents.] Remember love is doing good, so God wants you to do something good for them. What good things could you do for them? [Allow the children to respond.] You could pray for them. You could give them your attention and really listen when they teach. You could encourage them and tell them that you really are thankful for them. Perhaps, you could pray and ask God to give you some ideas. (2)(9b) In Galatians 6:4 is about taking a test. Would someone read that verse for us? [Allow a child to read Galatians 6:4 than display Visual #6.] I’m sure you know all about taking a test. Your teacher gives you a paper with questions on it, and you have to write down the right answers. Well, God wants you to take a test. He wants you to test yourself to see if you’re loving others the way that He wants you to. I’m going to ask you some questions, and I want you to think about the answers. Don’t answer aloud; just quietly answer them to yourself. Do I care about others as much as I care about myself? Do I help people up who have fallen into sin? Do I show love to all my teachers in school? Do I show love to the Olympian coaches? Do I show love to my parents/guardians by honoring and obeying them? Are you as loving to others as Jesus would be? If you’re still not sure of the answers to those test questions, you might ask someone else how they think you are doing in loving others. Ask a good friend who will tell you the truth. Ask your parents, coaches, and teachers. Tell them you really want to grow in love and you need to know. Galatians 6:7-8 talks about sowing and reaping. In the spring, some of you may take seeds and plant them in a garden; that is sowing. If you plant pea seeds then you will get what? You will get peas, and if you plant corn, you will get corn. When the plants ripen, you will harvest the crop; that is reaping. These verses tell us that what we put into our lives, we will get out of them. For example, if we put godly things into our lives, then we will live godly lives. If we put bad things into our lives, then bad things result in our lives. [Read Galatians 6:9 and display Visual #7.] Have you ever gotten really, really tired? So tired that you just wanted to drop on the ground and not move? No doubt we’ve all been really tired. Did you know that God knows that sometimes you get tired? God knows sometimes we get tired when we are doing good and loving others. God knows that sometimes you get tired of trying to help people who fall into sin. He knows that sometimes you get tired of helping others with heavy burdens. God knows that sometimes you get tired of listening to your parents, coaches, and teachers. But He says don’t give up. Don’t quit. Keep on loving people. Remember, it’s the law of Christ. But He also says, don’t give up loving people because He will reward you for obeying Him. You see, God loves you, and He wants to do good to you. You know, when a farmer plants his field, he doesn’t expect the crops to come up the next day. He knows that it will take a long time before the crops are ready to harvest. When you love others, God tells you that you will reap a good harvest. But you must be patient. It may take a little time before you see the harvest. So, God says to you “Don’t give up.” (1b)

Jesus as your Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live within you. The Holy Spirit is there to help you love others. [Read Galatians 5:22-23.] In our last lesson we talked about the fruit of the Spirit. How did you do this week in showing your fruit to others? In this lesson we learned about love. Are you loving people the way God loves them? Earlier in the lesson I asked you these questions: Do I care about others as much as I care about myself? Do I help people up who have fallen into sin? Do I show love to all my teachers in school? Do I show love to the Olympian coaches? Do I show love to my parents/guardians by honoring and obeying them? Are you as loving to others as Jesus would be? Maybe your answers are no to them, and you need to ask Jesus to help you to show love to others. Sometimes it is hard to show love to those who have hurt you or maybe are different from you. Maybe you are just tired of showing love to someone who is mean to you. We should show God’s love to everyone and at all times.

learned about the Fruit of the Spirit. How did you do this week showing the Fruit of the Spirit to others? Love is a Fruit of the Spirit. So, how are you doing at showing true love to others? What are some ways you can show true love to others? [Allow children to respond.] Sometimes it is hard to show love to those who have hurt you or maybe are different from you. Maybe you are just tired of showing love to someone who is mean to you. We should show God’s love to everyone and at all times.

Personal Training Time

1. What is the law of Christ and how do we obey it? 2. How can you show love and do good to someone this week? 3. To whom can you show love and do good to this week?

The Big O’vent

Four-Man Wheelbarrow Race [See Big O’vent Mega CD, page 186.] Did you encourage and show you teammates love during the game? This is one way you can show love to others. Christian Service: [See Olympian Christian Service Manual; Group Christian Services 1-11 for ideas.]

Closing Ceremonies

Each day of your life you will either show your own fruits or the Fruit of the Spirit. Let Jesus work through your life to produce the Fruit of the Spirit so others may see Jesus through your life.

Lesson Adaptation Explanations

1a Extra Action: Have a Coach enter carrying a large stack of books. As he is carrying them, they start falling. Praise the children who come to help him. [Continue The Coaches Corner at: “Well, how about if you knew someone whose parents were getting a divorce.”]

1b Extra Action: Have a pastor or an Olympian Coach come in and fall down and lay on the floor. He should start moaning about how tired he is. The Bible Coach tells him that he must get up, but the pastor or coach says, “No. I’m too tried. I just want to quit.” The Bible Coach should tell him that he’s teaching the kids to be quitters, but God says we can’t quit. The Bible Coach should help the pastor or coach get up. The pastor or coach should thank the Bible Coach.

2 Small Group: Have someone give a testimony to the Olympians about how someone’s act of kindness changed their life.

8 Champions Only: Take the children on a Christian Service and teach the lesson on the bus or van. If you have to take multiple vehicles then either have multiple teachers or teach it at the location of the Christian Service. You could also teach the lesson first, and then take the Olympians on a Christian Service and do the Personal Training Time in route.

9a Challengers Only: Replace the story with the following Puppet skit.

Coach: Let’s see how Beeper and Pipsqueak are doing. [Puppets enter] Pipsqueak: Have you done your math homework yet? Beeper: I don’t have math homework tonight. Let’s go outside and play. Pipsqueak: Beeper, I know you have math homework! The teacher gave it to us just as

school finished today, and we didn’t have time to work on it! Beeper: I know that, but I can just copy your homework, and then it will be done. Pipsqueak: That would be cheating. Beeper, God wants you to do your own work. Besides, I

haven’t finished mine yet either. Why don’t we sit down and do it together? Beeper: I’ve got a better idea! Why don’t you sit down and do it for us?! I can still play

while you do our homework. Pipsqueak: Because I love you, I want you to stop doing what is wrong and to do what is

right. It is right for you to do your own homework. Beeper: Maybe I could put a frog in teacher’s desk tomorrow, and she’ll forget all about

our homework. Pipsqueak: Maybe you should just sit down and do your homework. Why don’t we work on it

and then compare our answers and make sure they are right? Beeper: I guess the frog isn’t such a good idea. Maybe a snake would be better. Pipsqueak: Beeper, let’s just do our homework. Beeper: I can see her face now…she’ll open her desk and scream. Pipsqueak: And you’ll get sent straight to the principal’s office and get suspended from

school! I’ve got a better idea! Let’s just do the right thing, and DO OUR HOMEWORK!

Beeper: You’re right, Pipsqueak. I just need to do my homework. My mind just gets to

thinking about ways to get out of it. Thanks for helping me do what is right. Pipsqueak: Your welcome, Beeper. We better go and get our math done. Say Goodbye,

Beeper.
