43 rd NATIONAL SAFETY DAY CELEBRATIONS AT CCT CCT celebrated the 43 rd National safety day on 4 th March 2014. The program was addressed by Mr. Ennarasu Karunesan, Director and CEO, DP World Chennai. He spoke about the history of National Safety day explaining that it was an autonomous body, set up by the government of India, Ministry of Labor and Employment on 4 th March 1966 to generate, develop and sustain a voluntary movement on Safety, Health and Environment at a national level. He asked the employees to maintain ‘zero’ fatality rate in the organization and to make CCT a safe work place. He complimented CCTians on their seamless, continuous and never ending safety journey. The National Safety Flag was hoisted by CEO.

43rd NATIONAL SAFETY DAY CELEBRATIONS AT CCT

CCT celebrated the 43rd National safety day on 4th March 2014. The

program was addressed by Mr. Ennarasu Karunesan, Director and CEO, DP

World Chennai. He spoke about the history of National Safety day explaining

that it was an autonomous body, set up by the government of India, Ministry

of Labor and Employment on 4th March 1966 to generate, develop and sustain

a voluntary movement on Safety, Health and Environment at a national level.

He asked the employees to maintain ‘zero’ fatality rate in the organization and

to make CCT a safe work place. He complimented CCTians on their seamless,

continuous and never ending safety journey. The National Safety Flag was

hoisted by CEO.

The function was then moved to Quay office area where each FRS

champions hoisted their respective flags and addressed the gathering for a

minute each. The first one, OS1 Pedestrian safety was hoisted by Mr. Madhu

Amirthalingam, Manager Operations who said pedestrian safety does not

mean a single man’s safety and so requested all the members to take care of

this major challenge.

OS2 Mobile Equipment Champion was Mr. Vijay Kumar. He hoisted the

flag and briefly spoke on how important it is to control the number of mobile

equipments inside the terminal. However the close monitoring/clearing of

unauthorized parking has brought a great amount of difference in the

terminal.

OS3 Handling Loads Champion was Mr. Subash Babu. He hoisted the flag and

thanked everyone for their dedicated effort and effective leadership of the

CEO.

OS4 Working at Height Champion was Mr. Ebenson Nalliah, who made a

remark on the past 3 years performance. He spoke about the introduction of

man cages, safety harness, fall protection and fall prevention. He described

that CCT has a good track record and thanked everyone for their support.

OS5 Vessel Safety Champion was Mr. Shahul Hameed. He recommended

the team to celebrate safety everyday and stressed on the point that we

should continue with safety.

OS6 Engineering Safety Champion was Saravanan Shanmugam, Manager

Engineering Department who hoisted the flag and spoke that following proper

procedures is the best way to work safely. He mentioned that if we use the

right equipment, which has undergone right maintenance in the right way

safety can be achieved easily.

OS7 Isolation Champion was Mr. Nallan Annappan. He hoisted the flag

and thanked the whole team for their continuous efforts. He mentioned about

the isolation tags that were introduced to ensure safety and congratulated

everyone for their support.

The gathering then moved to training hall, where the group was

addressed by Mr. Nagarajan Govindan, Manager HR. He welcomed the group

to 43rd National Safety Day celebrations and requested the CEO to read out the

Safety pledge. The whole staff repeated the pledge after CEO. Safety ‘kavasam’

a song about safety in terminal was sung by Mr. Poornachandran

Thiyagarajan, Gate operations. Next, was a message from Mr. Manish Jaiswal,

Director QHSSE&T which was read by Mr. Ebenson Nalliah and a minute

silence was observed for those employees who lost their lives due to

accidents.

Mr. C Suresh Kumar, Union Representative spoke about accidents that

happen world wide. He said that as per global survey 1.24 million people die

per annum due to accidents alone and out of this people between the age

group 15 -25 consist the majority. He spoke that in India out of the total of

1,39,091 fatalities, 1,18,588 consist of men out of which 11,571 are

pedestrians alone. He enlightened the group that Tamil Nadu stands No.1 in

accidents and fatalities, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Andra Pradesh and

Maharastra. He appreciated the continued monitoring and awarness of

SAFETY amongst the CCT Team which has brought down the accident rates

from 112 in 2011 to 69 in 2013.

Mr.M.S.Shakul Hameed briefed on the importance of National safety day

and motivated the group to make safety a key element in their day to day

activities. In addition to this he quoted an example from the epic story

Mahabharata. He also advised the group to follow safety consistently.

Awards and recognition

Awards were given to the following. First category was drawing competition.

The winners were E. Yazhini D/o Mr. Elanchezhian and J.Claudio Vaz S/o Mr.

Joe Arun Vaz.

The second category was for Mr.Saravanan Shanmugam, being the

highest scorer among the FRS champion OS6 and third category was to Mr. P

Gopi for his excellent performance in the safety department.

Mr.Karunakaran Govindan Nair, Senior Executive operations

department was awarded for his consistent performance and being guardian

of the month and Mr.V. Chandramohan, Venus electrical for his sincere and

dedicated efforts.

Mr.Aadhi Moolam, G4S Inspector was awarded for ensuring team work and

safety and Mr. Yahiya khan, Zenith lasher for ensuring work place safety while

lashing.

Mr. R Sathish Kumar, PMS lasher was awarded for ensuring safety of their

employees and Mr. Mahendra Yadav, AGL ITV driver, for maintaining speed

limit inside the terminal.

This was followed with a speech by the Man behind the success of CCT, Mr.

Ennarasu Karunesan, Director and CEO. He threw light on 3 important areas –

the 200 m stretch at the north side ‘In gate’ and congratulated Mr. Shahul

Hameed for his seamless efforts. Secondly, he mentioned South side 200m

stretch at ‘Out gate’ and congratulated Group 4, Mr.Ebenson Nalliah and

Mr.Shahul Hameed for achieving this. Last but not the least he mentioned

about the ‘zero ‘pedestrians achievement inside the terminal. He also

reminded that since there is no trailer queues in the northern and southern

sides, the operational performance could be increased from 30mph to 35 mph.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Ebenson Nalliah and the

gathering dispersed. In addition to this National day Safety Pledge was made

by contract employees and private truck drivers at various locations inside

CCT and also CFS.

canteen.
