    APPLICATION:

Adhesives should be mixed to a thick, smooth, slump-ree consistency.

Suggested mix proportions should be given on the adhesive packaging.

The use o a mechanical stirrer or at least ve minutes will help in

obtaining a suitably useable mix. For paste adhesives, contents o bucketsshould be stirred well beore use. Once mixed, the adhesive should be

applied to the correctly prepared substrate surace, using the correct tools.

The correct tool will be a notched trowel o some description, suitable

or the material, the application and the application method i.e. thin bed

(up to 3 mm) or thick bed (over 3 mm). Use o the correct tool will help to

ensure a ull bed o adhesive is applied between the tile and the substrate.

Combing the adhesive with a notched trowel will orm ribs, which will

be squashed down to orm a solid bed when the tiles are applied.

Tiles should be applied to the adhesive with a twisting or sliding action to

bed them in ully. This should be undertaken generally within 20 minutes

o mixing the adhesive. Depending on the adhesive and substrate this

open time may be increased or reduced. The open time o an individual

adhesive should be checked beore use. Subsequent tiles should be laid

by placing the tile adjacent to the previous tile and twisting away slightly.

This ensures that a clean grout joint is ormed to enable later works

to be completed satisactorily. It is good practice to remove a tileoccasionally as xing proceeds, to check that adequate contact andwetting is being maintained with the adhesive.

    Fixing Guide

    GENERAL FIXING:

There are a wide range o adhesives in the Bostik range, both powders

and pastes, or wall and foor applications.

Adhesives should not be used as anything other than a method o xing

a tile to a substrate. They are not structural materials and they do not

improve the substrate onto which they are applied. I the substrate

is poor, ailures are likely to occur.

    Pepaain

Fixing and grouting should not be carried out i the material, substrate

or ambient temperature are below 5C. Doing so will signicantly

retard the setting times. At temperatures in excess o 30C it is likelythat setting times will be accelerated to such a level that the material

becomes impossible to use. All substrates should be sound, rigid and ree

rom oils, chemicals and other materials that can act as parting agents.

    PRIMING:

Primers are designed to allow adhesives to perorm as designed

    or to dry correctly:

    They also :

    Reduce porosity o backgrounds

    Increase adhesion on non-porous backgrounds

Isolate suraces rom each other as not to cause a chemical reactionthat could cause a ailure

Add surace strength to riable suraces

    Prepare the surace or waterproong

Sealing a surace is dierent to priming in that the substrate

may need more than two applications to achieve a barrieror reduce porosity

Despite misled belies that priming WILL ALWAYS improve a tiling job,

    this is not always correct.

Unnecessary priming can add two potential ailure points -the bond o the adhesive to the primer and o the primer

    to the substrate.

It is not always necessary to prime everyday tiling jobs

    on good suraces.

Under more demanding circumstances special primers maybe required.

I a background is unsecure it should be repaired or replacedrather than just primed.

    GROUTING:

A range o coloured grouts and silicones are available or both walls andfoors and it is, thereore, important that the correct material is chosen.

In general it is the tiles that are selected or colour and pattern thoughthe colour and joint width o the grout can have a signicant eect on

the overall appearance. Where possible, a trial area should be viewedusing the tile grout combination chosen. The ollowing guidelines aregeneral to nearly all tiles, though special consideration should be madewhen tiling natural tiles such as terracotta and marble, or specialised tiles

such as mosaics as well as to special grouts such as epoxy systems.

PepaainThe grouting process will result in some pressure being applied to the

tiles already axed and it is, thereore, important that the adhesive is

let suciently long beore the grouting operation commences. This can

range rom 2 hours or a ast set application, to in excess o 24 - 48 hours

or a paste adhesive application. I the grouting is undertaken too soon,

the pressures applied can cause the bond between tile and adhesiveto break. Once broken the bond will never be reormed. For xing

guidelines see the relevant section. The joints to be grouted should be

clean and ree rom adhesive, dust or dirt. As a general rule o thumb the

grout depth should be twice the desired grout width. Where white grout

is to be used it is oten considered that the use o a white adhesive will

result in less grout and a neater job. Unless the material is a x and grout

system, this should not be done. A thinner layer o grout will be less stable

and may result in the need to re-grout at an early age.

    Appliain

Grouts should be mixed to a thick, smooth consistency. Excess watershould be avoided as this will give rise to increased risk o cracks ormingin the joints and will produce a weaker mix that will be less permeable

and less durable. I the grout is mixed too dry it will be hard to apply andmay result in an unsightly nish. Suggested mix proportions should begiven on the grout packaging. The use o a mechanical stirrer or at least

ve minutes will help in obtaining a suitably useable mix. Grout shouldbe thoroughly worked into the tile joints with a grouting trowel or rubber

aced foat until the joints are completely lled to the ace o the tile.Surplus grout should be removed rom the tile ace with a rubber

squeegee. When the joint is nger hard, i.e. sti enough to withstandthe pressure o a nger, the joints can then be pointed by compressingthe joint with a rounded piece o wood or pointing trowel or other

suitable material. Beore grouting highly glazed tiles, a small test area

should be sampled to ensure that the glaze is resistant to scratching.I Flexibond is mixed in with the grout or polymer modied groutsare used, any surplus material should be cleaned o the tile surace

immediately with a sponge and clean water. This mix should not beallowed to dry on the surace o the tile or it will be dicult to clean o.

    Ging Msais

Mosaics are usually used to give a dierent appearance to larger ormattiles. Because o their small size, attempts to grout them in the normalmanner can prove onerous and is oten, thereore, not undertaken as

precisely as required. However, mosaics should be grouted in the samemanner as larger ormat tiles. With paper aced mosaics a dierent xing

method needs to be ollowed. The mosaics are, as described, attachedto a paper sheet or ease o storage etc. To grout these tiles, the groutingis undertaken prior to xing, rom the rear o the tile. A ull grout jointis applied rom the rear and the back o the tile cleaned thoroughly.

The paper adhered sheet o mosaics is then axed as normal ensuringa ull bed o adhesive is used. Once set the paper ace can thenbe removed, the tiles cleaned up and ull grout joints are ensured.

tin Be Sli Be FlsFor thin bed method o application, the adhesive should be appliedto the substrate using the fat edged side o the trowel. A thin coat

at a uniorm thickness o about 3 mm is spread, then ribbed usingthe notched side. The tiles should then be pressed into the ribbedadhesive with a slight twisting action within the open time o

the adhesive. In situations where the installation is subjected torequent or occasional wetting and areas o high humidity, theadhesive should be applied as a solid bed by spreading the adhesive

in a thin layer, or alternatively, as a ribbed bed, but to ensure solid bed-ding a thin coating may be buttered over the backs o the tiles beorexing.

    ti Be Sli Be Fls

For thick bed application, in the case o suraces that are notsuciently true or fat to permit thin bed xing, traditional fooradhesives may be applied as a foated 3 - 6 mm thickness not exceeding

12 mm. When using tiles such as uncalibrated stone or slates,

consideration should be given to the use o a thick bed adhesivesuch as Stone-Flex or a pourable thickbed where the adhesive

can be laid in a single application up to a thickness o 25 mm.This will help in giving ull coverage in awkward positions or withuneven tiles.

Beore the adhesive is set, spare material should be removed romthe surace o the tile and the grout joints.

tiling Lage Fma Wall & Fl tiles

Over recent years, the combination o improved tile manuacturingtechnology and interior design trends has seen a huge increase indemand or larger ormat tiles. A large ormat is considered to

be a tile with the length o at least one edge greater than 600 mm(nominal) or a acial area greater than 3,500 cm (nominal).Thereore a nominal 600 mm x 600 mm tile would be considered

    to be large ormat.

Prior to xing large tiles, it is important to ensure the suitabilityo the surace to be tiled. There are industry specications or weight

per m depending on the surace being tiled. Time should be spentchecking the fatness o the wall or foor, the larger the tile, the fatterthe surace will have to be.

Ready mixed adhesives are not recommended as they are thin bed andrely on water loss to achieve ull bonding. The cure time is severely

retarded with any type o large ormat tile thereore we onlyrecommend a polymer enhanced adhesive.

Around the foor perimeter and around any eature interrupting thefoor surace e.g. structural eatures, xed plant and machinery etc.

At 4.5 to 10 m centres, depending on subfoor construction, along the width and length o the foor and over supporting

beams or walls, in large areas especially on suspended foors.

In heavy trac areas the edges o the movement joint may needto be reinorced with a metal edge. Contact Bostik Technical Adviceor more inormation.

Note. Stresses may result rom actors such as drying shrinkage, defection and moisture movements in the base and thermal andmoisture changes aecting the fooring. These stresses can sometimes

cause loss o adhesion and bulging or cracking o the fooring.

To counteract this, movement joints extending through the tilingand its bed should be incorporated in the installation. Movement joints

or the foor tiling are as ollows:

Flexible joints aligned to structural movement joints(EXPANSION JOINTS).

Flexible joints to accommodate smaller movements thanstructural joints (DAY JOINTS).

Contraction joints which are non-compressible to relieve tension(TILED FINISH).

    Sal Memen Jins

Structural movement joints in the bed and tiling should be positioned

directly over, and be continuous with structural movement jointsin the base.

oe Memen JinsFlexible joints should be placed over supporting walls and beams atintermediate positions to accommodate defection o the base and

movements in the fooring. Flexible joints should be used around

Calcium Sulphate ScreedsTested or use on Laarge Gyvlon screeds

A Calcium Sulphate (oten reerred to

as Gypsum or Anhydrite) screed is a reefowing screed that utilises a dierent binderthan traditional sand and cement screeds.

The binder in its various orms can collectively knownas Calcium Sulphate. The use o this material is becoming morewidespread as it oers a aster application or the screeding contractor

with minimal shrinkage enabling thin applications (compared to sandand cement) and does not require any reinorcement. This is benecialor the screeding contractor but must be taken into account by the tiler. It is however very dicult or the tiler to be able to identiy the calcium

sulphate screed to that o a traditional one other than by the colourwhich generally appears to be lighter.

I a cement based adhesive is applied directly to a Calcium Sulphatescreed the cement can react with the Calcium Sulphate resultingin the ormation o a crystal structure called Ettringite. This will resultin expansion which will break the bond at this interace resulting

in a separation o the two materials.

Sealing e SreedThe screed should be sealed with a primer that will provide a barrier

to prevent any contact between the cementitious adhesive and the

Calcium Sulphate screed. We recommend Laybond ScreedmasterEpoxy Primer (diluted as below). This is a two part epoxy primer andmust be allowed to dry to a translucent, tacky lm beore subsequent

    work is undertaken (6 - 12 hrs).

Tiling should be undertaken within 2 days and the surace should be

protected rom dust and other contaminants. Laybond ScreedmasterEpoxy Primer is a two component water dispersible primer.

Supplied as a 6 kgtwo component set.

Diluted with 5 litres o water

Coverage on CalciumSulphate approx. 100 m2

    Quick and easy to apply

    Specied/approvedby major manuacturerso these screeds.

For calcium sulphate application mix the materials in a larger tubmixing Part B (hardener - small 1 kg tub) and Part A (5 kg tub)

completely until a uniorm colour is obtained, using an electric drilland propeller blade (typically 2 minutes to mix) then slowly add 5 litreso clean cold water whilst continuing to mix. Only mix the componentswhen ready to apply and apply as soon as mixing is completed using

brush or roller. Apply adhesives within 48 hrs o priming to achievebest bond.

    PREPARATION:

Sae LaianeWhere necessary the screeding contractor will usually remove any suracelaitance (a shiny, hard crust) prior to any urther works being carried out.

I laitance is still present this must be removed rst beore continuing. The screed should then be vacuumed to remove all dust and riablematerial so that the surace is clean, dry and sound.

Mise cnen / dyingThis type o screed usually takes approximately1 mm/day up to 40 mm thick and you

should add 2 days/mm above 40 mm(based on a sealed site with controlledenvironment).

The tiling work should not beundertaken on a screed witha moisture content above 0.5%(or an RH o 75% or above when
