User selectable frequencies between 20 -30 kHz give longer range and prevent interference from other vessels.

The SX90 is a low frequency, high-definition; long range Sonar that utilizes two high-end computers to process

data from the transducer. The SX90 is specially designed for vessels where range is criteria No.1. With the large data capacity in the dual computer signal processor there are several unique possibilities for beam forming. Three different vertical beam widths, single or dual vertical view and 180° tiltable vertical view are available. At 30 kHz operating frequency, the vertical beam width is only 6,7°.

The Simrad SX90 Sonar offers unique features such as full circle beam stabilization for easier fish detection in poor weather and 11 different Sonar operating frequencies to avoid interference from other Sonars. The long range and higher definition of the SX90 will improve your catching abilities and help to make better use of your time at sea. Great emphasis has been placed on giving the best possible overview in the search and catch situation. In addition, full screen echo presentation, resizable windows, off center, zoom and dual operation are standard functions on all sonar models. You can evaluate one school while tracking two other targets, giving you full control of schools and net from detection to catch.

Multi frequency - 20 to 30kHz!On fishing vessels there are numeroussources making noise, such as propellers, generators, engines and other hydroacoustic equipment. With multi frequencyfrom Simrad you are able to tune yoursonar for maximum performance and avoidinterference from own and other vessels. The multi frequency comes very handyin other situations as well; high and lowfrequencies have different detectionranges on different conditions and species.

Easy selection of your favorite display modes or user settings.

Numbers of markers with exact latitude/longitude positioning.

Easy selection of your trawl or purse seine symbol.

Storage of your echo picture for later evaluation.

Enlarging the echoes for more detailed information.

Optimizing the most interesting echo view.

Target tracking of three individual targets.

Selection of "Full Screen" or "Menu" presentation.

Off center presentation Offset the vessel to any screen position and enlarge the echoes for more detailed information.

Full screen presentation In full screen presentation, the echo presentation will be extended to cover all the display area.

Beam stabilizationWhen the beam stabilizer is activated, both the horizontal and vertical beams will be electronically stabilized for roll and pitch. The full circle beam stays on the target independent of the vessel movementeven in rough seas.

”Two sonars in one”In the dual mode, each sonar picture can be set up as if you had two different sonars. Individual frequencies, tilt angles, ranges, gain and filters can be used.

Dual beam The combination of the horizontal and vertical beams display the school of fish from above and from the side at the same time. It is not necessary to go over the target to see the vertical distribution on the echosounder.

• Ideal for mackerel and tuna detection and evaluation

• Detects weak and scatteredtargets under difficult conditions

• Ideal as a "catching machine"

• Stabilized during transmission and reception for roll and pitch

Vertical viewThe vertical view is used for showing the vertical distribution of the school. The tiltangle indicator helps in optimizing the tiltangle for the best picture in the horizontal view. In automatic target tracking, the vertical view remains locked on to the selectedtarget.

A school of fish is detected and tracked bythe sonar. The school’s swimming speed, direction and history are shown on the horizontal view on the screen. This helps the skipper to find the right time and position for setting the net.

Purse seine data The seine indicator shows the time from when the net was shot, the length of shot net, and the total net length. Also the net sinking is shown graphically. With a Simrad PI system connected, the correct net depth and sink rate will be shown in relation to the school and the bottom.

The yellow purse seine symbol is set around the school. The seine dimensions are entered into the sonar for up to three different purse seines. When using the PI system and depth sensors, each mark will have depth and sink rate values indicated on the screen next to the markers.

Catch dataAll the vital school data is available: Depth, distance, bearing, speed, course, area and volume in tons. In addition, the geographical position in latitude and longitude can be displayed when a GPS is connected.

17

Combi-W transducer

The most common dual frequ-ency configuration is the 38/200 or 50/200 kHz systems using the Simrad Combi transducers. However any two frequencies can be chosen to maximize the performance of your fishery. The two frequencies can be operated completely independent with settings like gain, pulse length

and range set induvidually. You can add on as many frequencies you want and you can display up to four frequencies at the same time. The flexibility of the ES60 is endless and by starting with a small system you can add on frequencies and more power as your fishery develops.

The Combi-W is a 38/200kHz transducer with a 30° beam angle on both frequencies. This is the first transducer in the world with such a wide beam angle making it perfect

for shallow water and close to the surface fishing. The high resolution you get from 200kHz is ideal for this purpose and makes it unique in the fishing industry.

The Simrad Combi C and D trans-ducers are a dual frequency 1kW transducer, You can chose between 38/200kHz and 50/200kHz. Both transducers has a narrow beam

(7X7° on 200kHz,10x16° on the 50kHz and 13x21° on the 38kHz). The Combi-C is a perfect match for the PI44 echosounder and theCombi-D is widley used on the ES60.

Combi-C and D

Combi-W

The ES60 echosounder is more than one echo sounder, it is actually several hundred echosounders. This is because you can configure the ES60 almost any way you want starting with one frequency (at your choice) and a single beam echo-sounder to a multipple frequency split beam system. Picture shown

left displays a one frequency system with the clarity and resolution only known to the ES60. The windows operation makes the ES60 very easy to operate and enables you to con-figure the screen the way you want with rezising the different windows to suit your needs.

In shallow water fishing or fishing close to the surface you need a transducer with a wide coverage area. The Simrad Combi-Wide can be interfaced with the ES60 making it the perfect shallow water echo-sounder. This configuration is popular among scallop and mussel draggers

as the resolution on the ES60 is extreemly high giving you the details of the bottom that you need. The ES60 can output the bottom data on an ethernet line to bottom hardness systems capable of process such information.

18

ES60 with split beam single frequency

Picture to the right shows a single frequency, split beam configuration. The echogram is showing a good concentration of Cod larger than 32cm at depth down to over 200m. Frequency is 38kHz which is a very good allround frequency for various depth and speices.

The bottom expansion shows large concentration very close to the bot-tom and that the majority of the larger fish is close to the bottom. This is vital information for effecient fishing. The size distribution can be set to any layer of the water colum to target the fish you are looking for.

ES60 with ”pelagic settings”

Here is another example of the ES60 flexibility, this is the so-called ”pelagic setting” where the bottom is of no interest. In order to focus on a specific area it is possible to phase the range to the exact depth desired. Also, the bottom detector can be

switched of (notice the zero depth read-out) enabeling the echosounder to run on a faster ping rate even at extreme depth. The size distribution is calculating the fish size only within the phased range maximizing your targeted fishing.

Information from a ES60 split beam system

The ES60 is the third generation splitbeam echosounder from Simrad. Withthe split beam you can determine thesize of the fish before you catch it. Thisis vital for sustainable and profittablefishery. The picture to the right showsthe information displayed on a ES60split beam system. The biomass in-formation tells you the density of the fish concentration, the so called ”fuel meter”.

The bargraph is a distribution of the fish sizes shown on the screen, here the majority of the fish is larger than 25cm. The fish plot at the bottom is widely used to detect fish close to the bottom where the depth varies. Sometimes ghost echoes are displayed in the main picture looking like fish, however, if it is not on the fish plot you can be sure it is a ghost echo!

ES60 with split beam and dual frequency

Like the ES60 single beam the split beam systems can also be configured with multipple frequencies. Here a large school of herring is shown using 38kHz and 120kHz both running on split beam transducers. The Simrad range of split beam frequencies are:

18, 38, 70, 120 and 200kHz.making it the most complete range on the market today. The ES60 can also be configured with a mixture of split beam and single beam frequencies.

Simrad design and builds its own echosounder and sonar transducers which are recognized throughout the world as the pinnacle of hydroacoustic technology. The design and advanced electronics employed provide unlimited possibilities for electronic control of the beams around and below the vessel. The broad band transducer elements enable the products to operate over a wide frequency range.

20

Sonar transducers (SH80 and SX90)

On the Simrad ES60 shells dropped into the water can be clearly seen, along with the small air bubbles rising to the surface. The Combi Wide transducer is sensitive enough to record the sinking of nut shells dropped over the side! The extra wide beam width gives much greater coverage, especially in shallow water.

New transducers have been designed for the fishing industry using the very latest Simrad technology. Connected to a Simrad echosounder, theseinstruments are highly sensitive at any depth and capable of detecting single fish below 1000 meters. New developments in design have made Simrad transducers more efficient requiring less power output. This compares favorably to other transducers which require up to 10kW to achieve a similar performance.

For a wider coverage under the vessel, the new Combi Wide transducer with a beam width of 30° covers a much greater area compared to 10° on a normal transducer.

Incredible sensor system!

Fishermen all over the world rely on information from the PI system every day. Information about door spread and door stability, catch volume in cod end and height of trawl is vital to be efficient on a trawler. On a purse seine you get information about net dept, sinking rate and thermo clines. Sensors are made in titanium and shock absorbing material to put up with the rough environment. The PI system gives you full control from setting to catch thus enabling you to be more profitable.

Geometry sensorsThe Geometry Sensor has been designed to vastly improve on the current symmetry measurement systems, which use a single sensor mounted on the head rope. The existing systems measures water flow at a small point on the trawl, meaning a few millimetres incorrect mounting of the sensor can cause large errors in the measurements. From the main Geometry sensor mounted on the middle of either the head or the foot rope, you measure the distance to two trans-ponders mounted on each door or wing ends. This measurement will immediately tell you if the trawl is skewed due to water current, or incorrect warp lengths and will therefore easily detect large or small changes in the trawl geometry.

The new Simrad FS Trawl system provides the full picture by utilizing the ultimate FS third wire system with PI sensors integration. This sophisticated solution enables the fisherman to have full control of any type of trawl fishery. The system provide real-time images from the trawl sonar head and the data from the PI sensors to the bridge, thus maximizing the quality of the catch and increasing effeciency at sea.

A major benefit of the third wire integrted with PI sensors is to prevent loss of communicationwith the trawl as the vessel is changing course or in heavy sea conditions.

Simrad PI sensor range and monitors from 6” to 15”.

32

The perfect back up By installing a PI cabinet and hydrophone, you have a complete back up system for catch indicators and other sensors. It is now possible to get trawl height, door spread, catch and depth information from the wireless sensors by implementing the receiver from the wireless PI system into the third wire FS system. In addition all the data from the wireless sensorscan be received wireless by the vessel making it the ultimate back up system if the third wire breaks.
