U.S. News Releases 2013 Best High Schools Rankings
(by Kelsey Sheehy 4/23/13, from www.usnews.com)
The importance of a strong high school education cannot be overstated. Good schools
challenge students academically, while giving them ample opportunity to explore their
interests. This combination can set teens up to succeed long after graduation. By contrast,
subpar schools can leave students struggling to make the transition from high school to
college or the workforce.
The 2013 Best High Schools rankings, released last week, can help parents wade through
the ever expanding options of public high schools. U.S. News collected data on more
than 21,000 public high schools from 49 states and the District of Columbia. U.S. News
joined forces with the American Institutes for Research, a D.C.-based organization, to
evaluate schools on overall student performance on state-mandated assessments, as well
as how effectively schools educated their black, Hispanic and economically
disadvantaged students. Performance on Advanced Placement and International
Baccalaureate exams was then used to determine the degree to which schools prepare
students for college-level work. Schools were ranked within each state, as well as on a
national stage, so families can see how their public high school stacked up against rivals
within the community and across the country.
T. L. Hanna High School, an International Baccalaureate World School, in Anderson,
South Carolina, ranks in the top 5% of schools in the state and top 6% of high schools in
the nation. Last year, they were ranked in the top 6% (state) and top 7% (nationally).
Out of 223 high schools in S.C., TLH is ranked #11. Statewide, T. L. Hanna is ranked
with academic magnet schools, such as the Academic Magnet High School in Charleston,
SC (#1); the Charleston County School of the Arts (#2); Mayo High for Math, Science,
and Technology (#6) in Darlington, SC; and Greenville Senior High Academy (#8) in the
rankings. Each of these schools that rank above TLH are selective in their enrollments of
highly academically-inclined students. TLH continues to provide an excellent education
for its students and is duly recognized at both the state and national levels as a high
school of excellence.
10 Tips for Parents During
Prom/Graduation Season (from Health Alliance on Alcohol)
Talking to teens about drinking can sometimes be challenging, but it is worth it when it
comes to safety. Remember, parents are the number one influencer in their teens’ lives.
The most important thing for parents is to communicate – start the conversation with
your teen. Before prom or graduation festivities, discuss your concerns. Ask where your
teen plans to go and with whom. Discuss the possibility that alcohol will be present, and
emphasize to your teenager that drinking is illegal at this age, and that alcohol use can be
dangerous.
Be aware that alcohol is often easy to access.
Reports show that teens feel they can access alcohol more readily as they
approach their senior year.
Make sure you don’t become the point of access. If you have alcohol in your
home, it needs to be secured from your teen and his/her friends.
Discuss peer pressure/influence. Peer pressure often pushes good kids into making
bad decisions, and adding alcohol can make things worse. Discuss your teen’s
plans for the night and have them check-in if there will be changes so that there
is an opportunity for them to ‘get out’ of an uncomfortable situation.
Host a prom or graduation party - just don’t include alcohol. Be aware that
even if you host a non-alcohol after-prom or graduation party, teens may bring
alcohol with them. Many teens get alcohol from their own homes or they have
someone older or with a fake ID get it for them.
Hosting a party can be a good thing, but providing alcohol can cause problems
for teens and liability for the parent host. Remember, it is a myth that providing
alcohol to teens at home is “safer.” It is illegal and each year parents are arrested
for providing it to teens.
Remember - it’s not just drinking and driving that is dangerous. Teens who are
drunk are more prone to get into fights, be either the victims or perpetrators of
sexual assaults, have consensual sex, or get into other accidents that do not
necessarily involve a car.
Don’t make assumptions when it comes to drinking and driving. Have an active
conversation with your teen about the physical effects of alcohol on driving ability with
a focus on safety. Remind them of the zero tolerance law - that it is illegal for anyone
under 21 to drive with any detectable alcohol in their bloodstream. Remind them not to
ride with others who have been drinking.
Have a safety plan. As you discuss the plan for your teen and their friends, make a plan
for safety, too. Make sure your teen has alternatives to driving if he or she has been
drinking; discuss a ‘code word’ that can be used in regular conversation to get a teen out
of a tough situation. During prom and graduation, teens often travel in groups. Make
sure you have discussed a plan with your teen in case they are stuck in an unsafe situation
where their driver has been drinking.
Consider the future. Whether your teen is headed to college or the work force, bad
decisions at key moments like at prom or graduation can influence the future. Arrests or
convictions can affect the college application process, scholarships, or a job interview.
Ahhh, the Internet -- remind your kids that pictures on the Internet will be seen, and not
just by you. So, if they choose to party with alcohol, remember that people with cameras
or cell phones may be posting pictures, blogging about the night, or emailing to friends.
If a teen comes home drunk consider the Emergency Room. It is becoming more
common for teens to die from alcohol poisoning when they are inexperienced at
drinking. Hopefully, you will not get to this point, but there are some things to check
for: if your teen ‘passes out’, cannot be woken up, has pinpoint pupils, or has shallow
breathing, don’t risk having him or her just sleep it off - contact the ER so an expert can
make the call. It’s safer to deal with the hassle than the consequences of a bad decision.
The Health Alliance on Alcohol is a national education initiative on underage consumption of alcohol through
parent/child communication.
Gatsby Day!
English III students had the opportunity to enjoy a sampling of life in the 1920s during
T. L. Hanna's third annual Gatsby Day on Friday, April 19. Students dressed in attire
typical of the Roaring Twenties and experienced activities from the Jazz Age that
included filling out dance cards for the girls and calling cards for the guys. The students
could play or watch a game of croquet "on the lawn," which was actually Mrs. Keels'
classroom. Ms. Creson from Southwood Academy of the Arts taught the students to do
the Charleston, the foxtrot, and the waltz. Gatsby Day culminated with a party at Jay
Gatsby's mansion (the library). At the party, students enjoyed food that would have
typically been served in the 1920s: peach punch, ham rolls, potato salad, cheese straws,
butter mints, and sweet, iced muffins. Students put their dance lessons to good use and
participated in a dance contest as well as a costume contest. Prizes were awarded to the
best individual male and female dancers. In addition, couples competed for best dancers
in a separate contest.

TLH Fishing Team Helps Wounded
Warriors
Cool temperatures and continuous rain did not stop the Striped Bass Conservation
Coalition (SBCC) from hosting a Wounded Warrior Striped Bass Tournament on April 27
at Portman Marina on Lake Hartwell with the help of the T.L. Hanna Fishing Team.
Hanna anglers were happy to volunteer to help facilitate the weigh-in by helping
document fish weights, taking pictures, releasing fish, helping to hand out trophies as
well as other aspects of the event. All proceeds from this event are going to the
Wounded Warrior Project. The SBCC will be hosting another Wounded Warrior Striped
Bass Tournament on Memorial Day Weekend at Clarks Hill. For more information about
this event, contact Warren Turner, at [email protected] or check the Wounded Warrior
Project Website.

TLH Boys Track Region Champs
Girls Rank 2nd
Behind Mann
The Hanna Boys’ Track Team won the Region Championship over Greenwood and
Laurens by two points last night at Hillcrest! The girls finished second to JL Mann, the
favorite for state champion in 4A. This is our first region championship in over 5 years
for TLH Track. The teams boasts three region champions: Courtney Hunt (boys’ triple
jump); Camry Rucker (girls’ triple jump); and Courtney Goodin (girls’ pole vault).
Congratulations to our outstanding track coaches who turned the team around this year
in a miraculous fashion! Thanks to Dana Aman, Brent Jackson, Darwin Rencher, Andrew
King, Amanda Bolt, Will Cook, and Chuck Parker for their efforts in having our teams
prepared for competition.
Baseball Senior Night

Finishing up their home schedule are Landon Simcoe, Bryson McMann, Matt Todd, and

Baseball Begins Playoff Push
Coach Adam Comstock’s baseball squad has overcome plenty of adversity this season,
including the loss of a team member before the season began. So staring down a 3-game
week and needing to win all three games to secure a playoff position seemed like a small
challenge. The team proceeded to earn big wins over Westside, Easley, and J.L. Mann
and earned the region’s #3 seed. The team will travel to Boiling Springs (2-4A #2) on
Thursday for the first game in the double-elimination District IV bracket. The other
matchup pits Region 4-4A #1 Blythewood against Region 3-4A #4 Fort Mill. The game
begins at 7:00 pm and admission is $5.00. Only SCHSL passes are accepted for playoff
games.

There is no charge to attend tennis matches.
Hanna Wins Prestigious Easley
Invitational
The Hanna Boys’ Golf Team played well in difficult conditions on Monday at a
challenging Smithfield Country Club and staked themselves to a slim one shot lead on
day one of the Easley Invitational. Day two began with Byrnes back one and Easley
lurking 11 back on their home course. While the Rebels from Byrnes faded early, the
Green Wave played tough making up 4 shots. But the day one lead proved
insurmountable and the Jackets came away with a 607 - 614 victory. Playing without
senior starter Sloan Hart (out sick) senior Bernie McShane came through shooting 76 and
a 1 under par 71. Freshman Brady Cox also rose to the occasion shooting 77 and 74.
Sophomore Graham Farmer posted two solid rounds of 76 and 77. Sophomore Alex
Dorton and Junior Grant Garrison both chipped in rounds of 161. The Jackets play their
final Region round Wednesday at Westside before the Region Tournament on Monday,
a one-day 36 hole event. If you see a Yellow Jacket golfer give 'em an attaboy and wish
them good luck!
Hanna Players Named to All-Star
Rosters

been named to the North/South Tennis roster. Stoll joins Tim Mullane (North/South
Soccer), Anna Brannon (North/South Soccer) and All-American Chelsea Drennan (Clash
of the Carolinas Soccer) on the summer all-star circuit. Stoll, along with tennis teammate
Azfar Hossain, was named a recipient of the prestigious National Merit Scholarship.
