SOUTH HAMPTON |Barnard School grade 3-4teacher, Beverly Peeke wasvisiting relatives in NewJersey last week when itwas announced that shehad been selected as afinalist out of 23 nomineesfor NH Teacher of theYear.

Even before sheembarked on her trip,though, Peeke was prag-matic about any potentialoutcome.

“No matter what hap-pens, this has been a greathonor and I am humbledjust to have been nominat-ed,” she said, adding“anyone in this schoolcould be [a nominee]. I am nobetter than anyone here.”

Perhaps, but she certainlydoes have quite a shot at earn-ing kudos as Teacher of theYear not only at the state level,but at the national level aswell. Pretty impressive stuff

for an educator who beganher career in a Head Startclassroom prior to her current

29-year tenure at Barnard.Peeke was nominated by

art teacher Diane Sheckells,who was inspired by a posterthat happened to be hangingin the teachers’ room earlierthis year, promoting the

award.“I walked by it a lot,”

explains Sheckells. “Every

time I saw it, Ithought of Beverly.”She filled out thenecessary paper-work, and present-ed it all to Peekeone day duringlunch period.

“I wrote that let-ter,” says Sheckells.“Then, it was up toBeverly to acceptthe nomination.”

And what wasPeeke’s initial reaction

to what her colleague hadhanded to her?

“I was surprised,” saidPeeke, who calls Sheckells “aphenomenal art teacher.” “Shegave me the nomination pack-et and said, ‘Here, [this is] for

you, if you’d like.’ I opened it,saw what it was, and justclosed it.”

After some consideration,though, Peeke went aheadand completed her part of thenomination process, acknowl-edging that she did so becauseSheckells “thought enough ofme and my abilities [to nomi-nate me].”

“When I thanked her Isaid, ‘YOU should be nomi-nated for Teacher of the Year,”Peeke adds.

Peeke, who earned herBachelors from UNH and herMasters from Lesley College,calls the whole procedure“kind of a soul-searchingprocess. It makes you look at
