NYE STRIKES GoLDNew Year’s Eve is still five months away, but Coromandel Gold is the next festival to confirm its 2012 line up. Festival regulars Shapeshifter, Kora and Fat Freddy’s Drop are set to make a return to Coro Gold, as well as Kiwi rockers Shihad and reggae greats Katchafire. The festival is also playing host to two big international acts – New York hip-hop legends De La Soul and Australian, Grammy-nominated electronica group Cut Copy. Black Sun Empire, AHoriBuzz and Sola Rosa round out the first announcement with more acts to come. Presales go online today, with general sales beginning on August 20. For more information check out coromandelgold.co.nz
BRAGG ABoUTBritish alt-rock musician and activist Billy Bragg has answered Christchurch’s call for help by confirming a benefit show at the Aurora Centre on October 16. The show supports the Beatbox Project – a quake-safe music-friendly precinct that will be the focal point in creating a new hub for musicians in the thriving city. He is extending out his existing tour from his Auckland, Wellington and Otago Festival performances on October 12 to 14 respectively. Supporting Bragg on his Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch shows is Cantabrian rockabilly Lindon Puffin, who was recently shortlisted for the APRA Silver Scroll song of the year. Tickets for all his shows are on sale now.
SAY YES PLEASEKeyboard mestro, composer and songwriter Rick Wakeman has announced three unique one-man shows around New Zealand this October. The renowned musician last traveled to New Zealand 37 years ago when he performed Journey to The Centre of the Earth with Auckland Symphonia. He is best known to audiences as the former keyboardist in the British progressive symphonic-style rock band YES. He’s also played with Lou Reed, Elton John and Cat Stevens. The intimate concerts are described as an entertaining evening in a one-on-one-type environment with Rick that features him performing on a grand piano, interspersed with ridiculous, albeit true, anecdotes. Rick is playing from October 6 to 8 at Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch respectively. Tickets are on sale now.
BACK FoR MoREGood news superhero fans – Walt Disney have confirmed that Joss Whedon is back on board to direct a sequel to this year’s blockbuster movie The Avengers. Walt Disney Co CEO Robert Iger said Whedon has also been hired to help develop a Marvel-based TV series for the US ABC network. Marvel is a Disney subsidiary. No further details have been released yet as to when the production will start or a release date for the film, but if figures for the first film are anything to go by, the sequel is guaranteed to be a hit.
FoR YoUR EYES oNLYBeck’s new album Song Reader, due out in December, turns the clock back 100 years in finding new and innovative ways to release music. Song Reader features a collection of 20 different songs that exist only as individual pieces of sheet music. Packaged together in a hardcover carrying case, the idea behind the creation is that each purchaser (those that can read sheet music at least) can put their own personal spin on each track, in turn becoming Beck – sort of.
hAURAKI WREAKS hAVoCMikey Havoc of Havoc and Newsboy fame makes his radio comeback joining Radio Hauraki to host the night show. He says this is a “tremendous opportunity” “to get busy on an iconic radio station. Mikey’s co-host will be Angelina Boyd, who currently presents NZOWN on Juice TV. The new show ‘Havoc Nights’ starts Mon 13 Aug, at 7pm.
IT’S JÄGER TIME!Jägermeister has announced the launch of two new RTDs to the New Zealand market. Jägermeister RAW is a strong blend of Jägermeister combined with guarana extract and other 100% natural ingredients creating a unique, refreshing drink and Jägermeister Ginger Lime is a blend of Jägermeister combined with 100 per cent natural ingredients including ginger root and fresh lime creating an appealing mix of bitter and sweet.
CLoSING TIMEA psychedelic mash-up of pop singers, rock stars and celebrities brought the 2012 London Olympic Games to a close. The show featured music by Jessie J, Muse and One Direction. Highlights include British icons The Spice Girls, who kissed and made up for a once-off reunion to sing their two biggest hit from on top of taxis and Freddy Mercury came back from the dead in the form of a giant TV screen. The $14 billion ceremony was a sensory overload of dancers, comedy skits and even a human canon ball.

sPoTifY manaGinG DirEcTor for ausTraLiasia kaTE vaLE EXPLains WHY THE nEW music sErvicE is a Win-Win siTuaTion.
Welcome to Spotify – the new service designed
to not only make music more accessible for
the consumer, but also crack down on illegal
downloads, plugging up the money haemorrhage
that record labels have been experiencing for the
last 10 years or so.
Developed in Sweden and launched in 2008 with the purpose – to combat piracy. Statistics show that 500 million people per year listen to music illegally. As a result, the music industry and everything in between (not just record label fat-cats) have suffered.
Kate Vale, managing director of Spotify for New Zealand and Australia, has the tough job of explaining why this service will change the way we consume music forever. In layman’s terms, she explains that Spotify is the world’s largest streaming music service. With access to over 16 million tracks, it gives you the ability to find any song you want at the click of a button. Upgrade to a premium service for about $12 a month, and you then have the ability to take that music and do with it whatever you like.
“It’s another way of consuming music, “ says Kate. “We are seeing a trend of people around the world preferring all-around access as opposed to ownership. My favourite part is that it hooks into Facebook, so you can share what you are listening to, subscribe to a friend’s playlist and it’s a great way of discovering new music and bands. I guess that’s where my listening habits have changed.”
Initially skeptical of Spotify, I have come to learn how it is a win-win for everybody – record labels, musicians and listeners. At $12 a month, even someone like me – the world’s biggest tight-arse on paying for music (as well as the most indecisive person) – would do that just to have access to anything I ever wanted at anytime. How great is that for a barbecue? A party? Or just chilling out at home?

“We get access by working with major record labels, a host of indie labels and major publishers,” says Kate. “It’s also rejuvenating physical sales and back catalogues. This is because it offers younger generations and new ears the chance to experience and enjoy music from established and well-known acts, such as The Rolling Stones for example, without having to raid their parent’s record collection or download online.”
Spotify isn’t just a music service, but a revenue stream to drive money back into the industry by providing a good quality, instant and legal music. No more shotty, crackling copies of DMX blasting out your Mitsubishi Evolution. This is giving listeners an option that goes beyond the black and white of illegal or expensive.
“Research has shown that most music fans don’t want to act illegally, but they do want to have everything at their fingertips instantly,” Kate explains. “This has created as a simpler, better alternative to piracy, generating revenues which have in the past been lost to piracy. A recent report from Musiksverige (Swedish music industry association) stated that piracy levels in Sweden have declined 25% since 2009.”
Kate says it’s not a replacement service – it’s simply another way of consuming music. “Our focus is to draw users away from piracy by delivering the most complete music service we can. We don’t want to replace people’s much-love music collections either. Many users will listen to albums on Spotify and go to purchase the digital/physical copy. “
It’s still relatively new in New Zealand, but Kate says the results so far have been a success. And with New Zealand as one of the biggest country of illegal downloads, may be it’s time for a change. Now they just need to bring in a movie service…

What to say about Sola Rosa? Well ever since they exploding into mainstream with their award-winning album Get It Together, these guys have been a staple fixture at any summer gig. Chasing the summer, they have been following festivals in the northern hemisphere for a while, pulling in some new fans as well as keeping the dedicated ones coming back for more. Now it’s our turn to show our support and brave the wintery blast for a little bit of Kiwi summers. With 10 years under the belt, like Katchafire, they have plenty of material to go around as well as their fresh beats form their new album.

Get your skanking on to the reggae beats of arguably New Zealand’s most famous reggae band. Sure, it’s not summer and no, you’re not in a festival, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy these guys now – and then enjoy them again when they come back for the New Year’s Eve tours. They’ve been around since 1997 so there is plenty of material and some new grooves too.
In keeping with the theme of Te Papa’s current exhibit Kahu Ora: Living Cloaks, a beautiful display of Maori cloaks, acclaimed musician Dudley Benson performs his album, Forest. It’s a vivid expression of New Zealand’s natural world and ties into the exhibit, presenting a rich cultural past and present. Benson is known for his haunting voice and strong stage presence.
Put up your feet and get cosy. Learn how to knit or crochet so you can make that hat/scarf/cardi/dog warmer you always wanted, and even play a board game or two. Folk artists Alaska and Jocee Tuc will be the entertainment with live music and the whole evening is expected to just be lovely, just as your nana used to do it.
No, it’s not a lesson in genealogy, but the release of Coach’s long-awaited debut album Family Tree. Releasing to a small, intimate audience, Coach will be joined by fellow friends Bond Street Bridge, Cool Rainbows and Ed Castelow. Acts are due to start at 9pm on the dot so be there or be square!
After two years of no Pluto, Nightchoir was formed with remaining three members taking the helm. Although Pluto was still on their minds when writing the first album, their new album, See The First Star, is solely a Nightchoir sound. This musical project is a new direction that’s sure not to disappoint.
Gangsta’ rappers The Pharcyde have keep rap fresh since the ‘90s and believe it or not they are here to cerebrate their 20th anniversary. Dam son! With comparisons to De La Soul, Pharcyde likes to play with the clichés of hip-hop (old-school hip-hop that is). Put away your Kanye West and get a blast from the past.

Swedish grindcore band Nasum are saying goodbye (but in Swedish obviously) as they embark on their farewell tour. It’s ironically the first (and only) time they have been to New Zealand and looks like it will also be the last. It’s a chance for Kiwi fans to give them a good send off.

Mature Themes is Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti’s brownest album yet. Why ‘brown’? Because Ween and their fans often use the word ‘brown’ to describe (among other things) lo-fi music so bad that it’s good and Mature Themes has early Ween all over it. Mature Themes is brown: confusing, sludgy, intoxicating, messy, shit and good. This level of strangeness and immaturity (brownness) is good though, I think. Although critics will likely see it as a step back from Before Today’s greatness, it’s actually another step forward in the band’s project of reinvention and musical archaeology. Reinvention because Pink seems to get bored with whatever his Haunted Graffiti project is doing by the time the album’s finished and so reinvents it’s sound. Musical archaeology because part of this reinvention is looking back through pop history to find styles to shape and manipulate. Earlier incarnations of Haunted Graffiti appeared like a fever dream of Bowie melodies, warped Scott Walker records and tacky weirdo synths. 2010’s Before Today was boldly accessible – less feverish, more conventional. Less ‘brown’ than previous releases, Before Today simultaneously evoked and ‘made strange’ the history of pop with Pink’s timeless opium-scented atmosphere and interesting musical turns. Rather than simply reflecting what Pink
was listening to at the time, it was indie pop re-imagined and revitalised by everything that came before it.
Similar efforts have been made by acts such as Bon Iver, drawing on ‘80s white collar sophisti-pop at it’s most indulgent to capture Vernon’s own ‘profound’ self-pity and this year’s Black Bananas expanding out of Royal Trux’s deconstructionist blues rock and into more tasteless funk metal, hair metal, and electro-clash.
This time around, Pink moves away from Before Today’s convention. To say (as some fans are) that Mature Themes is a “return to form,” however, would be to undermine Pink’s project of constant flux. Consciously ‘brown,’ Mature Themes reaches back to early Sparks’ aesthetic and Zappa’s oddball sense of humour. In taking on Sparks’ (or Halfnelson’s) aesthetic, Pink also evokes Syd Barrett’s outsider nonsense.
As such, it’s often hard to tell who Pink’s referencing with songs about “blowjobs of death” and “she-male meth heads,” but the effect is the same. Mature Themes draws on retro avant-garde, outsider artists and old pop-weirdos in the most jarring, yet expertly ‘brown’ way possible. Difficult, messy, shit, and good.

The popular Sampler Season returns with a feast of free Sunday music concerts from 26 talented New Zealand musicians. This is the perfect way to kick off those wintry Sunday afternoons. Not only that, you will get some sweet lessons in knitting from Wellington’s knitters and yarn bombers. Score.
Arguably the better half of Guns ‘N’ Roses (Oh wait, sorry there’s more than two in the band…), Slash has been, and always will be, a guitar icon. Mostly for his luscious locks, but also for his wicked guitar rifts. Remember ‘Sweet Child o’ Mine’? Guitar genius. Along with Myles Kennedy on vocals (of Alter Bridge fame), prepare to rock hard.
DJ Thane Kirby is mixing it up at Ponsonby Road’s legendary Chapel Bar this Sunday, playing all the tunes you need to enjoy a Sunday arvo drink or, if you had a hard night, maybe a water is more your choice. Either way, he’ll be keeping you going playing hits from the past and present.
Australain guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel is most famously known for developing his complex fingerstyle technique (settle down ladies, not that kind of style) that has spawned hundreds of how-to DVDS, but also seen him skyrocket to fame for both his solo work and also his work alongside other artists, including John Farnham and Dragon.

Ballet’s not just something that was cool to learn as a kid – some people make a profession out of it and are wildly talented. Re-telling the age-old tale of Cinderella, the Royal New Zealand Ballet has some lavish and extravagant costumes on their side, as well as an electric score.
Watch conductor Simone Young lead the orchestra with a wild frenzy and excitement that earns her the title of “one of the most exciting and groundbreaking conductors of our time”. Cathedral of Sound is expected to be a delight as the drama of Mozart’s ‘Linz Symphony No.36’ comes to life before your eyes.
YouTube sensation and comedy icon Jeff Dunham made a name for himself with his whacky and eccentric characters and for bringing the lost art of ventriloquism to the modern world. He’s been named Time magazine’s “most popular comedian in the USA” and also made it onto Forbes list of rich peeps, earning a $30 million in one year.
Filling your mind with the guitar-glory that is Led Zep, the show transports visitors into a dozen mood-provoking settings. Sounds like some weird kind of science experiment. The show also takes you on the Space Park 360, a 38-minute, 9-ride show that takes audiences on a wild ride through the solar system.

With films like Everything Must Go and Casa De Mi Padre, Will Ferrell has demonstrated a desire to extend beyond his well-established oafish on-screen comedic persona. None of that desire is present in The Campaign. They could’ve called it Ron Burgundy Runs For Congress.
While newer to the movie star game, Zach Galifianakis has now carried a specific movie persona through three big movies and his character here (Ferrell’s political rival) does little to go beyond that.
So with two big actors on autopilot and actual modern politics resembling a broad farce at the best of times, The Campaign can’t help but give off an air of reaching for low-hanging fruit.
That said, I laughed out loud more than three times, which is my litmus test for any movie comedy. They managed not to spoil ALL the best
jokes in the trailer and the film doesn’t outstay its welcome.
Good work is done by supporting players such as Dylan McDermott (as a shadowy political consultant) and Katherine LaNasa as Ferrell’s shrill wife. I got excited when John Lithgow and Dan Aykroyd showed up as two characters clearly inspired by the legendary Duke brothers from Trading Places, but the script doesn’t give them much to do.
With shows like The Colbert Report setting a new standard for biting political satire, a film like The Campaign feels a little thin (especially when it reaches for last minute seriousness), but if you’re partial to either Ferrell or Galifianakis’ schtick, you’ll find plenty to enjoy here.

Not for the squeamish or faint-hearted, Inside New Zealand: Donated To Science looks at the controversial subject of human dissection and the stories of the people who donate their bodies to science such as medical schools. This doco really get inside the issue and asks the grim questions.
Bourne may be the name, but it’s certainly not Jason Bourne as we know him. In fact, it’s Aaron Cross – another agent through the Treadstone programme whose memory is suddenly triggered by the events of the previous films. Prepare for everything that makes a Bourne film brilliant: guns, cars, running, explosions and the CIA trying to kill everyone.
Lively debate is the name of the game with Media3, a new show made by the team behind Media7. With presenter Russell Brown at the helm and led by a team of experienced journalists, the show takes a good hard look at media matters with those behind the New Zealand media.

As a former Dunedin resident, Velvet Burger has been a staple part of my diet since it’s inception. As times change their delicious, fresh, burgery goodness always stays the same. It has become a popular destination after a night on the town. The fillings are fresh, the perfect size and their massive bowl of kumara fries are to die for. Not only that, ordering online is a breeze and they have BYO for the weekends in true Scarfie fashion. Their range of local beers and wines go down a treat with all burgers.

Eat your pizza as New York intended – by making as much oily mess as possible and smothering it in parmesan cheese. Delicious! Sal’s has become a regular of mine now that I realised they also do $20 jugs to wash down your pizza with.

Located on Wellington’s dazzling waterfront, night time visits to Foxglove give a real sense of 1940’s glamour on an ocean liner. Once a large space, Foxglove has been designed into a series of smaller spaces within the building to give a sense of intimacy to the separate areas, each with a personal touch. Treat your special someone on a romantic dinner looking out across the water, have a private night with the girls with their wild range of cocktails at the Foxtail Champagne & Cocktail bar, or get lost in nostalgia in The Games Room, adorned with vintage cameras, memorabilia and board games.

UK’s inflUential gUitar act Bloc Party knows how to string us along. Back in 2009 main men Kele Okereke and russell lissack announced that the band were packing it in. after three albums, including the hugely successful A Weekend in the City, the band told The Guardian and New Musical Express “that decisions were made between the two to work separately” meaning lissack was touring with rockers ash, and Okereke was writing an ep, The Hunter and touring it.
then, mid-last year fansites started to buzz around a Bloc Party reunion, spurred by a group photo published at Christmas time. rumours intensified when lissack left ash, to perform as a touring guitarist before taunting the press that he’d begun work on ‘Bloc Party album no.4’ and even booked studio time for september last year. “Kele and i started working on Bloc Party stuff,” he to The Guardian, “We’re having a bit of a break until the festivals are over, because people have commitments during the summer, but we’re going to get back properly in september and sit in a rehearsal studio to work on new band material.” it seemed that BP were reuniting after all, although the band will “most likely not” play any concerts in 2011 wrote drummer Matt tong on his facebook wall.
in January this year Okereke told radio host Zane lowe that the band had “two tracks in the can and had demo-ed seventeen more.” then, in early March fans started finding short videos popping up on Youtube with various band members jokingly jamming up “possible tracks” for the new album. finally, in late March they confirmed via twitter that recording was underway proper and also locked in the new contract with french Kiss records (prior to that they’d been floating un-labelled). at last the not-so-surprisingly named Four has been confirmed to drop on 20 aug. recorded with alex newport (at the Drive in, the Mars Volta) at nYC’s stratosphere studios the music ranges from the twangy, chripy, indi-pop of the single ‘Octopus’ to more radiohead-friendly artsy malaise and heavier grunge that sparks comparisons with sonic Youth and smashing Pumpkins. and to keep in step with previous media teases you can catch the latest album ‘preview’ on their site at blocparty.com

the Man With the most recognizable top hat and arguably the best reptile collection in rock returns to our long, white, and occasionally ashen skies next week. lead guitarist for guns ‘n’ roses and Velvet revolver, as well as an accomplished solo and session artist, saul hudson is the abso-lute rock star. his meandering, lazy trademark swagger never betrays his ambitions or his pedigree. Yet slash has jammed with virtually everyone in rock from ian astbury to Michael Jackson.
But what’s his solo show like? is it a case of a famous axeman flanked by a reed-thin vocalist and a bunch of hired goons standing behind him as he lurches awkwardly in the foreground. nope. reports tell us that this no half-assed effort. What you’ll get if you venture out to see slash’s, um, “solo” tour is one full band experience with vocalist Myles Kennedy front and centre stage, and slash’s omnipresent occupation to the left, more as a bandleader of a really professional outfit staffed by capable musicians.
“everything i touch i turn into a shit band,” slash told rolling stone a while back, referring to his work with gn’r, his first solo effort/side project slash’s snake pit and “super group” Velvet revolver. “i still have my name on the marquee, but i’m just not a dictator. i don’t want to rule anything. i like to hear what other people’s ideas are…”
and who needs multiple singers when there’s Myles Kennedy? slash’s new wax, ‘apocalyptic love’ has only one, unlike his 2010 self-titled effort which featured everyone from lemmy to fergie, ian astbury to Ozzy Os-bourne, adam levine and Chris Cornell. Kennedy, who also leads alter Bridge with three Creed members, made the right impression when he nailed ‘Back from Cali’ and ‘starlight’, and so he was asked to front slash’s touring band.
“i’d like to be able to give myself a little bit of credit for being able to recognise when somebody is really genuinely good,” slash told Billboard magazine. “When he did ‘starlight’, i was like, “Whoa!” from that moment on, when we worked together and just started rehearsing for the tour. the only reason i got him to do that tour in the first place because i knew that he could handle the diversity of all that material.”
Mind you, if slash’s boasting that Apocalyptic Love includes multiple vocal-ists, you’d probably believe him, as Kennedy’s vocal range, tone and talents infuse to create a different character in each song. On the title track, he’s hitting the very metal upper register; on ‘One last thrill’ it’s way snarkier and ‘standing in the sun’ is super deep and dark.
slash wrote most of the new work during the band’s crazy touring sched-ule so he was often up at bizarre hours, recording it down for Kennedy, but he was clear that there was no agenda or time pressure to get out a final product. some of the lyrics reference Kennedy’s long-gone drug past. “there was a period in his life that we’ve often talked about that is the basis for the majority of the lyrics on this record,” says slash. “the major-ity of them have really pointed lyrics about something in particular that he went through.”
slash also told Billboard his last recording experience with Valentine was amazing – “he likes all the same stuff that i do… a genius. i didn’t think twice about doing it with him. he actually built a room in the studio that i could play in with the other guys and just use monitors for playback.”
the first single, ‘You’re a lie’ almost didn’t the record. the track was only the second song sent to Kennedy. it was rehearsed at sound check and what’s now a chorus was totally different. going through multiple “morphs”, the song finally found acceptance towards the end of pre-production.

Wizorb’s a funky new downloadable from Beatshapers, a prolific publisher of PlayStation minis - in particular, those ported from other devices. Don’t let that put you off, though, as - much like the rest of their catalogue - Wizorb is top-notch, and ideally suited to the platform.
The retro aesthetic is wrapped around classic gameplay, too, with the Arkanoid-like action instantly reminiscent of games of yesteryear. Dig a little deeper, however, and you quickly find that while it might be packed full of 8-bit charm, it also tips it’s hat nobly to modern gameplay conceits, resulting in a package that’s both nostalgic and relevant.
You control a wizard who, in order to bounce balls around effectively, transforms himself into a bat. The aforementioned balls will zip around the level, bashing into things, and it’s your job - as the bat - to both smash any bricks or monsters in the level with the ball and prevent that same ball from draining out the bottom of the level. Pretty simple stuff, but executed well so even at its most basic level, it’s fun.
The game looks amazing, managing to pull off a real retro aesthetic that looks (and sounds) every bit as if it was plucked out of the golden age of Super Nintendo, Amiga, or SEGA. I tried the game on everything from a Vita to a PSP Go and my 46” TV by way of a PlayStation 3 and, without exception, it looked very cool.

what’s the ethos of your store/clothing line? I got into this game as a collector, so the product reflects a collector’s desire for pieces that are unique and interesting, but also wearable. Overall, the most important thing is quality. With eyewear, it’s easy to determine quality by the weight and feel of the frame, the sturdiness, the comfort and the attention to detail.
what muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? Azealia Banks. I’m not even really thinking about her apparel. Style is so much more about attitude and she’s just so gleeful about being such a dirty-mouthed, sex-crazed, badass rap princess. What a gangsta.
Societies biggest fashion faux pas? Letting the trends consume your look. The fashion oracles might genuinely try to predict trends, but they end up determining them. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. People often ask me how I’ll predict the next thing in eyewear. I would never try. I’ll just keep creating new things that I love and if they become popular, then that’s the new thing.
Colours/patterns big this season? Going back to the oracle point, they’ve engineered a big trend towards vibrant colour for this season and I’m all for it. They’ve put bright colours and florals in the pipeline and we haven’t seen that since the last floral shirt craze. You remember, the one was triggered by Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo+Juliet in about ’96?
what are the essentials for a man’s wardrobe? Formal: You need two complete outfits; two single-breasted suits , two pairs of leather dress shoes two leather belts, a set of plain and patterned shirts, and ties, a good dress watch, some suspenders, two pairs of cuff-links and a silk scarf or cravat.
Cocktail: Supplement the above with a fitted sports jacket, some soft, light linen shirts, two pairs of trousers, one pair loafers, one pair leather boots, one pair of classic sunglasses.
Street: You need at least two really good pairs of jeans, one of them black, at least two pairs of casual shoes, one of which is a pair of black high-top converse all-stars (seriously, they fit at least one look in every decade since the twenties).
hyphenate three words to describe your style: John-Wilkes-Booth. Is that cheating?

BOUGHT TO YOU BY
PUPPets. fOrget the cuddly Jim henson-type – we’re talking about the outspoken, crude, no-holds-barred type that makes ventriloquist Jeff Dunham’s comedy come to life.
Chances are if you have ever watched Comedy Central or Youtube, you’ll know his work. he’s the guy with puppets that include achmed the Dead terrorist, Bubba, the redneck hillbilly and Walter, the grumpy, beer-swilling retiree.
not exactly family-friendly entertainment – and not without a hint of controversy – but at the end of the day, texas-born Jeff is time magazine’s “most popular comedian in the Us” and has featured on the forbes rich list as one of the highest paid entertainers. guess not everyone is easily offended.
“i think because what i do is unique and there is a whole generation of people who haven’t seen ventriloquism before, these is an appeal,” says Jeff. “it also helps that the characters are likable – even achmed, the “controversial one”. there are some things that are redeeming qualities.
“he’s supposed to be a terrorist, but instead he falls in love with the Western culture. how can you not love that? somehow, i don’t know how this happened, but i have ended up making a terrorist a sympathetic character.”
after his first Mortimer snerd dummy at age eight, Jeff was hooked on the unusual art form. as one “of those typical kids”, he wasn’t popular with the girls, nor was he a future football star. ironically, he thought puppetry would help him fit in. and strangely enough, it did.
“i could make my classmates laugh and make fun of people in a good-natured way – and get away with it! from there i stuck with it and now it’s the great job ever.”
fair to say he no longer has any difficulty with the ladies and racking in a cool $30 million (Us) over a year, it doesn’t matter that he failed as a professional athlete. But Jeff is humble about his achievements, acknowledging, “you never know how long that 15 minutes of fame will last”.
“i treat my comedy show like a business. i kind of look at it like apple. You know what you get when you walk into an apple store, but every once in a while i wanna come up with something completely different. that’s what i try to do. i wanna make sure people get what they paid for. if they see more than one show, they will get something totally different than the last.”
Don’t ask him where the material comes from though – after countless live shows, DVDs and movie appearances since the 1980s, Jeff admits he is still baffled by how he comes up with fresh comedy.
“it shocks me how much material is there,” he laughs. “i just take from whatever is making me laugh at the moment, what i think the audiences will like and what’s going on. Where does it come from? i don’t know.”
With a repertoire of eight main puppets, each one has a little bit of Jeff in each of them, and in return, the characters feature traits that can be applied to people we know. Who doesn’t know a grumpy retiree like Walter? But when it comes to the controversial things that often slip out of their mouths –or the stereotypes they portray – Jeff removes himself from that process.
“People think i create these characters so i can hide behind them and say outlandish things. it’s quite the opposite. i just create funny things that the character would say at any given moment. it’s not my beliefs. it’s staying true to the character.”
and that extends as far as their reality off stage as well.
“Do i argue with the puppets at night, alone, in a room? no. i am pretty healthy about that, none of those problems exist.”
