1.8 Safety information for electrical installationo

The electrical connection may only be made by authorized specialist personnel and inaccordance with the electrical circuit diagrams.

The electrical connection information in the manual must be observed; otherwise, the type ofelectrical protection may be adversely affected.

Safe isolation of electrical circuits which are dangerous if touched is only guaranteed if theconnected devices satisfy the requirements of DIN EN 61140 (VDE 0140 Part 1) (basicrequirements for safe isolation).

To ensure safe isolation, install supply lines so that they are separate from electrical circuitswhich are dangerous if touched, or implement additional isolation measures for them.

    1.9 Operating safety information

Before switching on the unit make sure that your installation complies with the environmentalconditions listed in the chapter "Technical data" or in the data sheet. If there is a chance that safe operation is no longer possible, take the unit out of operation andsecure against unintended startup.

    Technical Ex-relevant safety instructions - "Ex d"

    10 TEIP11, TEIP11-PS 42/18-46-EN

    2 Technical Ex-relevant safety instructions - "Ex d"

Requirements / prerequisites for safe use of the I/P signal converter in Ex version "Ex d"in a hazardous area design (type doc. 900771)

    IMPORTANT (NOTE)

Prior to mounting, check to ensure that the I/P signal converter meets the measurement andsafety requirements that apply at the measuring point.

When making the electrical connections, characteristic values in the "Specifications" sectionand the information in the explosion protection certificate must be complied with.

The device may only be operated with instrument air that is free of oil, water, and dust. Donot use flammable gases, oxygen, or oxygen-enriched gas.

Never open the device immediately after switch-off: Wait for at least four minutes.

ATTENTION - component damage!Handle the cover with care. Damage to the cover thread results in loss of the "Ex d"protection.

IMPORTANT (NOTE)For "Ex d" operation only use cable glands with full "Ex d" approval.

Secure the cable and line entries against twisting and loosening by using a medium-strengthsecuring adhesive and self-locking elements.

If the I/P signal converter is used at an ambient temperature above 60C (140F) orbelow -20C (-4 F), use cable entries and cables suitable for an operating temperature of upto the maximum ambient temperature plus 10 K, or for an operating temperature down to theminimum ambient temperature.

ATTENTION - component damage!Devices that comply in new condition with "Ex ia" and "Ex d" protection classes should not beused in intrinsically safe "Ex ia" applications once they have been commissioned and used inan environment with Ex d protection, since the electronics may have been damaged. For this reason the devices must be permanently marked (e.g. cross out or mask over "Ex i").

    Design and function

    42/18-46-EN TEIP11, TEIP11-PS 11

    3 Design and function

The TEIP11, TEIP11-PS signal converters transform electrical signals into pneumatic standardsignals, e.g., 4 20 mA into 0.2 1 bar (3 ... 15 psi). They represent, therefore, a connectinglink between electrical/electronic and pneumatic systems. The patented signal conversionprinciple is based on the force balance method.

FunctionalityForce balancing takes place at the lever arm, which is pivoted with a tension band at (9). Thecoil (1) and yoke (2) generate a magnetic field in the air gap (3), which applies a force to themagnet (4) on the lever arm. The force changes in proportion to the current (input signal)flowing through the coil (1).

A counterforce is applied on the other side of the lever arm, through the dynamic air pressurepresent at the nozzle (6) and the flapper (5). The force is controlled in such a way that abalance of the two torques is achieved. If a torque imbalance occurs, the lever arm rotates. Thisrotation changes the air gap between the nozzle (6) and the flapper (5) and, thus, the dynamicair pressure. Air is permanently supplied to the nozzle (6) through the throttle (7). The converterstage (8) converts the dynamic air pressure into a 0.2 ... 1 bar or 3 ... 15 psi output signal.

    Design and function

    12 TEIP11, TEIP11-PS 42/18-46-EN

Supply airDuring operation the pneumatic unit needs a steady supply of air (13) according to unitspecifications. Zero position adjustment can be performed by turning the tension bandsuspension (9), and range adjustment via the potentiometer (10).

Special featuresSpecial features of the TEIP11, TEIP11-PS signal converter are its relatively small dimensionsand outstanding operational stability when subject to shock and vibration. The stability is due tothe light weight (only around 100 mg) of the moving system, which consists of the lever arm withthe magnet (4) and the flapper (5) with balancing weight.

FilterThe filter (12) prevents malfunctions caused by polluted air. Note that the filter capacity is onlysufficient for collecting dirt that occurs occasionally (e.g., residual dirt in the air pipes at firstcommissioning). It is no substitute for proper air conditioning.

For this design, a special connection block is used to mount the unit.

M00327 Fig. 5: Control room housing unit for block mounting

DesignThe connection block is designed for mounting a maximum of 4 I/P signal converters. Theconnection blocks can be expanded to units of 2, 3, or 4 blocks to create block units with 4, 8,12, or 16 I/P signal converters.

MountingThe material for forming the block units is delivered separately for self-installation; in addition tothe connection blocks, it includes the necessary screws and gaskets (O-rings).

Air supplyThe air supply for the connected units is provided via a central connection block. Theconnection block's air connector features a non-return coupling for every single I/P signalconverter. This allows connection sites to remain unused, and individual I/P signal converters tobe dismounted or mounted during operation.
