SCREEN PAINTING April 26 1 session Thursday

Program #12FM15 Row houses, scrubbed marble steps, and painted screens are all cher-ished emblems of Baltimore. It was 1913, William Oktavec, a Czech immigrant and grocer, couldn’t stand the harsh sunshine streaming through his window onto his fresh vegetables and spoiling them. To dim the light, he painted colorful fruits and vegetables on the outside of his window screen. Customers noticed how you could see out of the window but couldn’t see in. This appealed to them because their close-packed city houses were missing the privacy they enjoyed in their homeland houses. Thus by the 1930s an estimated 100,000 painted screens adorned Charm City’s doors and windows. Join us to learn this historical art form! (annascreenart.com) Materi-als to bring: a clean window screen with no holes, tears or clogs (minimum size 18” x 18”; maximum size 30” x 30”) - aluminum, nylon or fiberglass meshes are acceptable but nylon or fiberglass are preferred for ease of painting.
