Using the present tense of “ir”+ a + infinitive

4.1 Present tense of irInfinitive constructions with “ir”
You learned that “ir” + a + lugar (place) expresses that
someone is going to a place.
Voy a la escuela.
Sometimes, the verb “ir” , followed by “a” is not followed by a place.
Instead, it is followed by an infinitive.
In such a construction, “ir” is conjugated and the other verb remains in the infinitive (-ar; -er, -ir) form.
4.1 Present tense of ir
The construction ir a + [infinitive] is used to talk about actions that are going to happen in the near future.
It is equivalent to the English to be going to + [infinitive].
Va a leer el periódico. He is going to read the newspaper.
Van a pasear por el pueblo. They are going to walk around town.

Vamos a + [infinitive] can also express the idea of Let’s (do something).
To express Let’s, we always use the nosotros form of “ir” followed by the infinitive of a verb (-ar,-er,-ir).
Vamos a pasear.
Let’s take a stroll.

There are two ways that you can translate the nosotros form of ir + infinitive. The translation depends on the context.
Vamos a rezar. =
We are going to pray.
Let’s pray.
