Overal avg. Rating per judge Recommendation Comment

5 Recommended Orbital Insight has created a very powerful and innovative big data application that could change the landscape on predictive decisions making for a broad range of industries. Using data collected via satellite from the environment to predict things like public company sales, weather events, crop output, rate of vegetation growth as well as countless military activities could well add a new layer of accuracy and predictability to a world that's quite unpredictable and volatile in many ways. So the idea is quite transformative. They seem to have strong initial traction, a solid CEO and team, and a solid group of investors and advisers. I'd imagine this technology could potentially be applicable to some of other Tech Pioneer companies. I think they are a great candidate to be considered for Tech Pioneer..

5 Recommended Outstanding opportunity, business model and technology! A huge, tangible benefit in sustainability efforts.

5 Recommended World-class. Orbital’s approach to satellite data analysis has the potential to change how decisions are made in any industry

4 Recommended really like it, innovative and original. Huge market, too.

Orbital Insight, Inc.IT-Information TechnologyUSA, North America

4.8 Orbital Insight is a geospatial big data company leveraging the rapidly growing availability of satellite, unmanned aerial vehicles, and other geospatial data sources. Orbital Insight works at the intersection of big data and the commercialization of space — processing satellite and UAV imagery millions of images at a time. Orbital’s sophisticated technology serves as a “macroscope” that allows the study of social and economic trends that are too large to be seen by the human eye, are hidden, or exist in places with poor official data. From cars in parking lots to trees in the rainforest, Orbital Insight can analyze any type of aerial imagery at massive scale to deliver insights that help clients make smart market decisions. Orbital Insight is focused on transforming images from space into insights we can use right away, here on Earth.

5 Recommended APX Labs sits in the cat-bird's seat of the burgeoning field of augmented reality smart glasses. While smart glasses remain in their infancy, enterprise vertical applications in field service, industrial manufacturing, oil and gas exploration, and similar industries are already being piloted. And APX Labs is a key software company in enabling all of these applications. Importantly, APX Labs doesn't require the success of any single smart glasses platform. Instead, their solution acts as a cross-platform software solution, enabling organizations to leverage a wide array of hardware platforms. This is key, since at this early stage in the market, some or many of those specific hardware platforms might not survive into the future. Instead, APX builds a relationship with the worker (through applications) and the organization (through business process reengineering), effectively capturing an important range of value in the smart glasses ecoystem. They also integrate with Salesforce as a cloud-based solution for managing the flow of data to and from the smart glasses applications. By focusing on the right demand target (the large market for workforce enablement with smart glasses) with the right portion of the value chain (software) at the right time (early, but when market demand was present) and with the right assets (the technology has a great record with early customers), APX Labs has become a key player in the augmented reality smart glasses market. As such, they deserve high scores for innovation.

5 Recommended Strong budding company serving an important (and frequently out of the news) sector, which has attracted a solid team and great investors

4 Recommended Beyond the initial hype created by Google Glass, we are now seeing a huge swell of interest in AR for industrial and field applications. The ubiquity of high bandwidth mobile data which now exists is a key enabler, that was missing previously. APX Labs find themselves in a very interesting and emerging space.

APX Labs, Inc.IT-Information TechnologyUSA, North America

4.7 Since 2010, APX Labs has been the leader in developing smart glasses based solutions for the industrial and commercial workforce. APX Labs proudly provides its Skylight platform to leading Global 1000 enterprises in manufacturing, logistics, oil & gas, and field services with active users in the US, Europe, and Middle East. Using APX Labs’ Skylight platform, users are able to interact with existing business processes where they can now access data and applications, broadcast point-of-view video or photos to colleagues, and receive live assistance on a heads up display without having to move away from their work. Skylight integrates with nearly any type of smart glasses and with most existing ERPs to drive improved productivity, operational flexibility, and process compliance & safety for the connected workplace. APX Labs employs world recognized experts in the field of wearable technology, computer vision scientists, human factors engineers, and systems engineers with strong wireless systems and mobile electronics integration backgrounds. APX Labs’ patent pending techniques and software platform have garnered multiple industry awards for excellence and selection as one of the first Google certified Glass at Work partners.

5 Recommended Quid have combined two very disruptive and modern technologies -those being machine learning to process vast amounts of seemingly unconnected data and advanced visualization techniques very suited to the way the human brain needs to process information. The visualization tech in particular stands Quid apart making it very accessible to the layman, which is unusual with "Big Data" solutions. The net result is an analytics capability that is pretty unique taken together as interconnected package. This level of insight is always valued and could have far reaching impact in the community. Given the background of the leadership and members of the company the service is likely to evolve further.

5 Recommended Very innovative and useful

4 Recommended Good innovation in an impactful area. Main concern is viability over the long run as these types of techniques are hard to protect from an IP standpoint.

5 Recommended Too soon to tell if they will succeed (remember deanKamen had an amazing device in this space 10 yrs ago, which never was released). but the co-founders hearts are in the right place and seem deeply committed to doing good. This is altruistic innovation in the highest tradition of WED and the TP program. I think they are a safe bet because even if they fail, they remain an inspiration for others to apply their entrepreneurial and technical skills in the service of giving mobility to the mobile-impaired.

4 Recommended This is a clear example of tech improving lives.

5 Recommended Cylance is truly a unique technology in a large field of nascent endpoint behavioral detection and response products.

5 Recommended According to Gartner, one laptop is stolen every 53 seconds. Druva’s impact is seen as it becomes the system of record for structured and unstructed data within organizations.. Very strong tech and product is best in class. Druva helps organizations to securely regain corporate oversight of their data, not only reducing risk of data loss or breach but also limiting opportunity for financial, legal, and reputational consequences

4 Recommended Data resiliency and retention is a crucial part of any organization, especially in the age when data is gold and retention [not throwing away your data] can lead to future insight using Big Data analytics. It is also crucial the way business is conducted these days, consumers will not tolerate your web site not working for a few days because a server went down and you lost all your data, they will move on. Modern data backup is about being able to access aspects of that data all the time, rather than it being a monolithic single system backup. Drive were one of the first companies to offer a totally cloud native solution. Worthy of a place in the community.

5 Recommended I first discovered this company several years ago, and have been watching their impressive growth over time--in fact I nominated them as a Tech Pioneer before (I think it was 2013.) I think the company and its founder, Luis von Ahn, exemplify all the WEF values perfectly: improving the state of the world. Moreover, their goal is not just to 'do good' for the world, but to do it really, really well. From a product standpoint, it's excellent. I and have used Duolingo myself and it's its is an impressive user experience--fun and engaging, with immediate learning benefit. I'v not tried all the other competitors, but have tried Rosetta Stone and it is superior in my view. It has also gotten better over time. Not only has the company expanded the number of languages covered dramatically, it uses of machine learning to continually improve the user experience. That said, in my view the most impressive things about the company is the number of people it can potentially help, for free, and Luis himself, who would make an excellent Tech Pioneer. In one sense, Duolingo is essentially the Kahn Academy of Languages; however, the fact that it uses data from its users to personalize the experience and to make the product better f overall, makes it even more compelling in my view. To users, the product is free, but the genius in it is in the way it uses of massive online collaboration for continual improvement, which is an area where Luis has a long and accomplished history. As the inventor of CAPTHA, he has a long history of inventing ways to leverage user input for public good. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to point to any additional information but to ge

4.5 Duolingo is a Pittsburgh-based education startup founded by Carnegie Mellon University professor Luis von Ahn, PhD, and Severin Hacker, PhD. Its mission is to provide free language education to the world. Known for its free, gamified, and science-based language courses, Duolingo is the world’s most popular online language learning platform with over 110 million users. It was selected by Apple as iPhone App of the Year in 2013, and by Google as Best of the Best for Android in 2013 and 2014. Duolingo is used both by students in the poorest developing countries and Bill Gates, the richest man in the world, a testament to its work building a society in which spending more cannot buy a better education."

5 Recommended Elections are indeed an area where the process has been stagnant for decades. It's a process that technology seems to have simply skipped over, and as a result, it's much less efficient and more expensive than it should be in this day and age. It's also a global issue. While voting processes in developed democracies have a lot to gain by harnessing the power of technology, developing countries as well as countries where voting processes are less mature could have even more to gain on a relative basis if they can leapfrog into a technology-driven process. So big points for tackling a big problem with big potential impact. I would like to seen more about the security aspects of their solution, and I would have expected to see more traction given how much money they've raised and how long they've been operating. Still, their progress is significant, and bringing this company and this topic into the Tech Pioneer spotlight would be a great addition to the community.

5 Recommended I sat with the founder at a dinner in silicon Valley several years back and was deeply impressed with her social commitment, and determination to fix the hugely broken voting system. I have been following them with interest ever since. They are a bit of an underdog, but their technology makes so much sense that they have a real shot at winning in the space. In summary, the combination of their technical innovation with their altruistic motivations make them a very good fit in my opinion

5 Recommended Strong solution for a growing need with solid forward momentum. Leadership with strong knowledge of this area and a solid advisory board

3 Not recommended I was not familiar with Everyone Counts before reading this submission but I am very famiilar with Scytl, a Spanish competitor, as I have written about the company. Scytl, was launched before Everyone Counts. Governments in 42 countries around the world use Sctyl's election technology, in some cases at a national or federal level and in others at a more regional level. In the U.S. it is working with 1,400 of 3,200 counties including important ones such as Los Angeles, Miami or Dallas. New York, Virginia, New Jersey, Alaska are also Scytl clients. Scty,l which is due to IPO soon, is more global so for me Everyone Counts is not the clear cut winner in this space.

Everyone CountsIT-Information TechnologyUSA, North America

4.5 Everyone Counts is bringing greater security, accuracy, auditability and access to voting by digitizing elections. We are leading the transformation of arguably the most important business process in the world—from expensive, antiquated purpose-built hardware systems and error- and fraud-prone manual paper processes, to a perpetually state-of-the-art software as a service (SaaS) model. Everyone Counts has brought together internationally recognized leaders in technology, computer security, and election administration to provide secure software-based election administration solutions to government and private membership organizations around the world. With hundreds of customer successes over the past decade, Everyone Counts’ innovations have improved processes, while cutting costs significantly over traditional voting methods. From voters with disabilities in Bosnia voting privately and independently for the first time, to soldiers serving on the front line finally being able to vote reliably, Everyone Counts’ sustainable, scalable solutions for election administration and voting increase participation, drive voter confidence and bring real credibility to results. Our global market leadership will result in increased accessibility and improved accuracy for all elections, as well as enhanced security, increased auditability, and significant cost savings. Everyone Counts’ mission is to ensure that every person in every democracy or membership organization in the world with the right to vote can easily do so privately, independently, and securely—and with full confidence that their vote is reliably counted.

5 Recommended In my view one of the fastest and most important ingredients in curing cancer is data. Since my brother is currently suffering from stage 4 metastatic colon cancer, I'm seeing this first-hand. There are so many questions that I'm SURE have been asked before by other patients with the same conditions, but we're blind to the learning that might result because data are not currently pooled. The problem bring solved for here, which is to bring together patient data in a HIPPA compliant way, is a powerful innovation that will create the ability to perform analytics across patients. I think this approach will not only be valuable for doing research to find cures for cancer, but can help patients navigate the complicated web of treatments in a much more optimized way, leading to better outcomes, much faster. If this database could be opened up. I have not worked with Nat Turner on this venture at all but has several interactions with him in the early days of Invite Media. He is extremely bright, passionate and curious and would be an excellent addition to the Tech Pioneer community.

5 Recommended Magic Leap no longer requires an introduction. They are literally breaking new ground in visual technology, which is paramount to the world we will be living in. Magic Leap do not simply use AR, they re-invent it with retinal projection. It is not only about gaming, but also about how any surface could become your workspace in the future, making their technology applicable to all WEF members. Magic Leap is about real technology breakthroughs which could change how we interact with information. Not many other companies can make such claims.

5 Not recommended Fascinating technology and off the charts on innovation, but they don't really have proof of concept or prototype at this stage. Put them at the top of the list for next year though. If/when this takes off (and I believe it will) I'd put them at the top of the list for consideration

4 Recommended this is on the border bet 4 and 5. Its add-on to deep learning -"deep reinforcement learning" is a novel and potentially extremely important concept as it could greatly accelerate machine learning. The company has top-notch investors, which provide an all-important network of resources to help the company meet its goal. I thus think that its prospects are very strong. Social/business impact is also potentially huge if deep reinforcement learning lives up to its promise. Of course Osaro could just be accelerating the arrival of the robot apocalypse, but I guess that if so, we may as well give our future robot overlords an award! ;-)

5 Recommended This company is targetting a massive market and big pain point. Most governments today procure complex services on a large scale with the objective of providing better social infrastructure, enhanced security, and higher standard of living to the general public. Sirion can enable streamlining and proactive monitoring of these engagements to ensure that the contracted obligations are met by the vendors and the outcomes are aligned with the original business case.

4 Recommended This kind of platform will be needed to convert the world of B2B contracts to the as-a-service economy in virtually every industry in the world. I don't know how good this team is, but they have taken an effective approach, and there is a lot of trapped value that can be released by their disruptive innovation.

SirionLabs Pvt. Ltd.IT-Information TechnologyIndia, South Asia

4.5 SirionLabs is a leading provider of enterprise SaaS products focused on the post-signature management of complex services contracts. SirionLabs is transforming the way buyers and suppliers of complex services (e.g. IT Outsourcing, BPO, 3rd Party Logistics, etc.) engage with each other using our flagship enterprise platform - Sirion. Sirion enables effective governance of complex services engagements in the post-signature phase by automating complex procedures across key governance disciplines – contract, performance, financial, relationship and risk management – on a single integrated platform. The result is improved supplier performance, reduced value leakage, stronger buyer-supplier relationship and significantly lower cost of governance.

the majority of businesses and enterprises are unable tobuild the suite of technologies needed for intelligent voice capabilities. MindMeld’s end-to-end platform enables a turnkey solution that is more affordable and accessible to most commercial enterprises. The technology is built on deep artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and enabling technologies for speech recognition and machine learning.

5 Recommended Teracle is at the intersection of subjects which are very topical this year: 1. Virtual reality, and the use of headsets (which are democratizing considerably) to help visualize complexity. Teracle are one of the best illustrations that VR is not just about hardcore gamers and Oculus Rift. 2. Education, Teracle harnesses the power of VR to make complex concepts (such as geometry or atomic chemistry) much more visual and intuitive to grasp for students 3. Open systems, Teracle has build libraries of vector graphics which are very easy for teachers to re-use and create VR curriculum with. This is an essential condition for the democratization of such solutions. 4. Asian start-ups, Teracle is a Korean start-up which is on its way to addressing international markets. They have recruited international young leaders to help promote their concept beyond Asia. This is one of the start-ups which I resonated the most this year.

4 Not recommended Approach seems to show promise and their technology is impressive, but to the extent their big innovation is in their Teraglass product, it's too early for them. The visual wearable space is evolving quickly, but there are a lot of unknowns about device adoption, practicality, use cases that lend themselves to visual or AR experiences, ultimate cost of these devices, operationalization of content, etc. Net, while a company to keep an eye on with founders that seem impressive, the company has not yet proves viability or adoption.

5 Recommended I have been reporting stories about SigFox since we put them on our cover in 2012. The company's technology, growth trajectory and potential impact make them a clear Technology Pioneer and the launch of the foundation adds an important social dimension as well

5 Recommended Offering compelling solutions today in the hot world of IoT / M2M. Great head start on future competing solutions from 4G and 5G. Strong, positive response at the recent Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona.

5 Recommended This is a very innovative technology that has no equivalent. It if delivers its promises it will connect the Internet of Things on long distance in a way that is impossible today. It has a huge market and potential, highly recommend them

4 Recommended Innovative, leading startup in the field of IoT. Well positioned in a relevant and growing segment Maybe too many awards already

4.5 Teracle, Inc. is a company that uses ICT to regenerate the current education ecosystem so that it is more suitable for the smart generation students and teachers. Its foundation was based upon the vision of three young men in their 20s - to create a world where everyone has an equal opportunity to access quality education no matter what his or her socioeconomic status is. The three men are twin brothers, In-Je Cho and Joseph Cho, and their best friend, Daniel Kim. Together, they worked on several projects to fulfill their vision, and eventually founded Teracle, Inc. in January 2013. Our mission is to use the latest technological advancements to help others access the learning tools they need, deliver quality education, and make it accessible to everyone. Our ultimate goal is to minimize the gap between the educationally rich and poor, improve education standards, initiate change and make worldwide movement in educational equity.

3 Not recommended What will hold back SIGFOX is focus on proprietary technology

5 Recommended The Company has built the world’s first maritime data platform, which analyzes and organizes the massive, fragmented and extremely unreliable maritime data, making the data accessible and actionable across verticals. It has solved the problem of ocean being the world’s missing data link and for the first time in history, it allows anyone to know what’s happening at sea

4 Recommended This is a really important area that has not received as much attention as it deserves, perhaps because it is not as glamorous as other areas, perhaps because this is an ecosystem that will take some time to adopt. In any event, the platform is a exactly the right model, the government agencies are natural early adopters, and the big market will come when general industry seeks the same kind of visibility from sea logistics as it enjoys on land.

4 Recommended Windward, which made Informilo's list of the Top 25 hottest Israeli companies in 2015, provides insight into the movement of the 50,000 commercial ships, and other vessels, that traverse the globe, carrying over 90% of the world’s trade. Its a great example of how Big Data can bring transparency to business and make a big impact

5 Recommended I think Jibo is a terrific candidate for Tech Pioneer, although I'm puzzled as to why it's not Cynthia Brazeal who is the nominee rather than Steve Chambers. Cynthia is clearly the inventor, innovator behind the technology and an out of the box thinker as it relates to product creation, and she is probably one of the world's most foremost experts in the world of social robotics. Having watched her in a number of YouTube videos on the topic, I think she would be a great addition to the community. That aside, this is one of the best devices I've seen to date that I think has true potential for being a companion on the home. Amazon Echo is intriguing, but it is designed to be much more utilitarian. The social impact this machine could have is significant--the fact that it learns your preferences and has a 'personality' sets it apart and puts it into a different category. I think this has huge applicability in both elder care and childcare in particular, but could be integrated into anyone's life pretty easily. Very high marks for innovation. Can't wait to get one for my mom! ('ve just joined their mailing list!)

WindwardIT-Information TechnologyIsrael, Middle East

4.3 Windward is a maritime data and analytics company, bringing unprecedented visibility to the maritime domain. With over 90% of the world’s trade transported over the oceans, data on ship activity is critical to decision makers across industries. But despite the huge stakes at sea, ship activity remains a mystery: the data is massive, fragmented and extremely unreliable when take as is, due to human error and active manipulation. The oceans are the last analog market and the world’s missing data link. Windward is bridging the information gap. The Company has built the world’s first maritime data platform, The Windward Mind, which analyzes and organizes the world’s maritime data, making the data accessible and actionable across verticals. From flagging criminal threats at sea to combating illegal fishing to identifying new market trading opportunities, Windward’s data and insights are providing reliable maritime data and analytics, for the first time in history, to anyone who needs to know what’s happening at sea.

4 Not recommended Jibo is impressive, but has not been released. I recommend watching the release closely (it should be this spring) and then making a final decision. Overall, my inclination is to pass this year and reconsider them next year when you have a release track record to examine. And substitute Breazeal for Chambers. Pros: impressive vision, and clear attempt to make a useful and friendly home robot resource. Excellent exec team with impressive experience. But I am annoyed that the candidate is Steve Chambers not Cynthia Breazeal. If she had been nominated, I probably would have cast a "yes" vote Cons: it is still vaporware. There is no way to evaluate the underlying technology, which may or not be innovative or effective. The few demos that have been reported suggest that its actual uses are rather limited. And it is entering a space littered with the corpses of earlier attempts. finally, the whole "affective computing" area is filling up with players from Apple's to Google racing to develop systems. Finally, I am annoyed by all the awards they list in their submission above -- most are for Breazeal's other work, not Jibo. Which only makes the case that the individual being nominated should be Cynthia Breazeal, not Steve chambers.

4 Recommended Promising segment of robot-led Human suport and helper combining Human like user interface with NLP capabilities. Amazon Echoes ans others ALL jumping on that hot sector, so differentiation will be key but difficult. Again one startup in that domain will be needed and jibo might be the right on

5 Recommended Innovative company with a big vision, potential huge impact, and a CEO who seems to be very impressive One huge challenge we have as a society is that the law is that increasingly, our legal system is unable to keep pace with the rate of technology change. It's getting more complex to review and analyze either federal or state by state statutes and map them to legal questions on the table today because technology introduces entirely new dynamics that are simply not addressed. (Witness the many privacy and data abuse issues currently being debated by the courts, including FBI/Apple.) There are huge legislative gaps in the US legal system as well as many others across the world. Applying machine learning & AI technologies to these issues could be game changing not only in helping predict outcomes, but in surfacing both gaps and potential legislative solutions in a much faster, efficient manner. Could be huge in the US as well as in countries all over the world. Great candidate for Tech Pioneer.

5 Recommended Very innovative solution for government combining statistical and analytical approac

4 Recommended Interesting company that we've known about for a while and are tracking. Not sure it becomes a massive technology platform but it can possibly improve the way our democracy works

4 Recommended They aren't explicitly trying to tackle broad social benefit, but their products help make government info (and risk) more accessible to organizations that serve the public. Many of their advisors (and apparently also their somewhat self-absorbed CEO) have demonstrated substantive commitment to socially-conscious causes. The technology behind Fiscalnote is not earth-shaking -- this is an implementation play around a solid business model. So I vote a yes, but you might want to contact Lally Weymouth who is an advisor to them and also a good friend of WEF.

3 Recommended The company is addressing a space that one would not commonly think is appropriate for data analytics and predictive behaviour, namely one associated with politics. However, the fact that this company chooses to address a challenging space where human interaction is so unpredictable makes it an interesting candidate to explore

4 Recommended well proven concept . solid group of supporters, big market. good leadership

3 Recommended Yes, well, maybe. It is a practical application of Jean Tirole's two-sided market theory. Star-studded investors. but a look at doctors in their system for Silicon Valley suggests they have an issue with Doctor take-up: the list was pretty limited, and omitted known local top doctors

5 Recommended Acquia is commercializing the important open source web software called Drupal. This software is freely available to all, but this company is making it easier for large corporations, government bodies, and non-profits to stand up and manage a global web presence. As a professional evaluator, I find this product and company to exemplify the benefits of open source software and the Internet. The combination of these forces makes it possible to connect billions of people -- including the next billion Internet users coming in via mobile phones and wireless networks -- to the information and services and other people they need to thrive in this digital economy. The payoff is the democratization of the world's information, the availability of University-quality educational resources to all, and the services underlying every economy and social order.

4 Recommended Blockchain.info has a strong global offering and a strong management team. In addition to the wallet and developer platform Blockchain offers a search engine that helps people track assets in a decentralized database and claims to have some 90% of the market in global search of blockchain. In an interview with my magazine the CEO put it this way: " you could think of us to Bitcoin as what Google is to the Internet.” I believe they deserve to be a tech pioneer.

4 Recommended Potential to become the backbone of crypto-currency led commerce

4 Recommended The team benefits the social-economy by practicing innovation in AI and machine learning in cyber-security to facilitate safer public, governmental and corporate infrastructures.

4 Recommended There are so very many cyber solutions out there it's difficult to truly differentiate one from the next, but the Cybereason solution is clever both in how it detects attacks and the fact that it's end to end.The fact that it looks at signal changes in processes, users, machines, memory, registry etc. that are predictive of an attack and then collects forensic action to diagnose, trace and ideally thwart the attack is impressive. They named two companies of the 25, but I would like to have seen more. Revenue suggests significant marketplace traction, but I'd like to understand more about major rollouts among clients who have tried it. (This the 4 instead of 5)

5 Recommended Very sharp founders and growth is at breakneck speed. O2O is a fast-growing market in China with huge potential, and on-demand, last-mile delivery is a key capability in this market

4 Recommended This is one of China's newest unicorns. It is solving complex logistical problems related to transportation and delivery. Applied broadly, these breakthroughs in logistics have far-reaching implications.

4 Recommended dMetrics have created something that perhaps already or very soon will become a necessity in society or business, that is a machine/tool/service that is able to process the vast amounts of data being produced on a topic at any one time and present it back to the user in a simple concise form tailored to the needs of the user at a particulate time. The amount of data being produced is accelerating, it is already impossible to have an interest in a number of topics and be considered knowledgable or up to date, dMetrics can provide this capability. The uses for such a technology are endless and if kept as an "open" technology, rather than the next Google, will be a very rewarding tool for society to use as a whole. A very worthy entrant to the community.

4 Recommended The team benefits the social-economy by practicing innovation in AI and machine reading that benefit to the Pharmaceutical and Financial industries.

4 Not recommended early stage . Not sure of the business case

4 Not recommended The space Maana is going after is big. It's true that industrial companies are plagued with disparate data in silos, many of which are in out-dated legacy systems that are difficult to integrate with. It's also true that unlocking data within these silos and making it inter-operable so that production lines, service functions, etc. can be performed faster, more accurately, So they get a lot of points for innovation, potential impact and working prototype. Viability, however is still a question. The examples they provide for potential impact are from an industry study, they are not examples of the results their clients are seeing. While promising, it's too early for them at this point. Would like to evaluate them again next year, when they have more proof of impact.

Maana’s mission is to democratize and operationalize big data analytics for millions of employees who manage, operate, and maintain the infrastructure assets and business processes of the world’s largest industrial companies. Operations of these assets generate massive amounts of data, yet tens of millions of day-to-day decisions regarding operations, maintenance, and repair of these assets are made with less than 10% of that data. Making sense of the other 90% is difficult and expensive, and hence today not feasible. Maana addresses this problem in an ingenious way. Imagine for one moment that search engines on Internet mysteriously disappear, instantly more than 90% of the World Wide Web goes dark, or in other words making use of the data on billions of websites becomes very difficult and expensive

4 Recommended I gave Mnubo a 4 rating. Based on Mnubo's focus on providing customers with value generating IoT data analytics solutions. Mnubo is a good fit for the community. The initial focus of IoT solutions has been on expanding the number of IoT-enabled connected products and assets. However, connecting IoT products is not where the value of IoT will be achieved. The real value of connecting IoT products will be achieved by capturing data driven insight and analytics from these connected products. Mnubo focuses on the value-generating IoT analytics market. Pros: 1) Innovation: Mnubo provides IoT data management solutions to help simplify the process of generating personalized, useful information from IoT-enabled connected products. This actionable analysis and insight is the true value of IoT, not just connecting the IoT devices. 2) Market Segments: Mnubo focuses on key industries and segments where we see momentum for IoT solution deployment, particularly: wearables, industrial markets, automotive/connected car, smart home, and healthcare. 3) Delivery models: Mnubo offers a SaaS solution to manufacturers using a three tiered pricing structure (base, pro, and premium). This tiered structure gives end users the flexibility to select the appropriate type of data storage, analytics, and management to meet their IoT data management needs. Cons: 1) Fragmented competition: The competition in the IoT data analytics category is fragmented with many different types of competitors trying to position their solutions in this area. 5 Recommended This is a company that I think can be truly transformational in the ed tech space. Solving for how to practically bring education to emerging markets is a huge challenge. Unlike the many other competitors in the ed-tech space, OUN has innovated to solve for three important barriers to success. First, it's bundled the cost of internet access in with tuition. As we've seen with so many other companies trying to bring the internet to these regions, the access costs are a very heavy lift. The bundling approach is a creative way to get around that. Second, the approach to learning, which is to make it self-paced, but with access to coaches, is important. Third, in contrast to MOOC's this is a degree-based program. While MOOC's are great for skills-based learning, they don't deliver this kind of experience, and don't culminate in a degree. I think OUN is a model that is offering a unique, innovative solution and it's traction to date is strong evidence that it's working.

4 Recommended Not the usual WEF profile, but perhaps that's a positive. As a consultant, the company is free to recommend the best approach rather than focus on its own offerings. It addresses a market that is often considered dirty or boring, but which matters to the health of the planet. Also, Morris's background is a plus

3 Not recommended While I like Rubicon's mission to improve waste management and recycling, I did not see near enough evidence that their particular approach actually works in a substantial way. Worth watching for the future, at present I would not recommend them as aTech Pioneer

By tiny fraction we mean 1/100th to 1/1000th of the power required by typical "low-power" chips from Intel, Qualcomm,Samsung or other leading chip companies today. PsiKick's chips can run entirely from energy they harvest from their environment via indoor light, vibration, energy, thermal differences or even RF energy. Essentially, they power themselves. No batteries required. Today PsiKick is building wireless sensor systems based on these chips to solve the hardest problems in the emerging IoT space

4 Recommended Strong Techn Pioneer candidate due to the holistic approach they've taken to harnessing the power of the voice of the consumer and delivering a 'social platform' to the market, and marketplace traction and renewal rate. However, they still come up short of a 5 for a few reasons. Growth rates are somewhat deceptive as they are driven at least in part by acquisition--it's difficult to tell how much of their success is due to them using capital to buy companies rather than inventing solutions themselves. While bringing a range of technologies together and melding them into the same code base so end users can have a single unified experience is impressive and complex, I'm not sure it rises to the level of original innovation as seen in many other candidate companies. I also thought their write-up was sub-par as compared to others. It was very repetitive, with too much sizzle, not enough steak. Would like to have seen a more detailed product description, as well as some examples of how the named companies are using their products to drive their businesses.

3 Not recommended Sprinklr captured our attention with their foresight in creating a unified social solution early in social media's overall development. However, since then other players have entered or refined their offering creating a competitive environment. Sprinklr's vision is inspiring, but we are still awaiting indicators of progress through concrete product enhancement details. Without those, it is difficult to provide a firm recommendation for this community. In the past, Sprinklr's leadership has caused us to question its ability to deliver on its brand promise. Recent additions to the company have us feeling more positive about success, however, time will tell.

4 Recommended While the revenue number if correct seems weak the company is a good example a component company using APIs, data and sensors to transform value.

4 Recommended Yext have an excellent history of innovation in the local business marketplace. Yext's PowerListings product has revolutionized the on-line "yellow pages" market. Yext were the first, and perhaps the only business, to truly bring value to both the consumer and the small business to allow both parties to find each other in a way that is both convenient and sustainable to both. #1 problem for a small business is to be found by consumers, #1 problem for a consumer is to find niche small businesses they like. Yext solves both with some innovative programatic software applied very differently from the crowd. A worthy addition to the community.

5 Recommended Appier is interesting for our community for 2 reasons: 1. They solve the well known problem of "multi-channel". This has been the buzzword in the digital world for multiple years now but Appier actually helps brands recognize when the same user reaches to them via different digital routes. They use big data to do this, in a rather novel way. So they help solve a major potential challenge for WEF members, using new technology. 2. They are fundamentally an Asian start-up and have been quite focused regionally. This is interesting by itself as Asian start-ups tend to be somewhat under-represented as a group, and have slightly different perspectives on subjects like privacy compared to their western counterparts. This is a good occasion for real productive discussions with WEF members.

5 Recommended The team's product is the best in class globally, not only in Asia. Very large impact in how artificial intelligence is harnessed for business to make better decisions. Significant moat and defensibility. Very important problem that they are solving i.e. “Emergent artificial intelligence” is one of 10 emerging technologies highlighted by the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council. CEO is a thought leader in Artificial Intelligence

4 Recommended While still at small revenues, they are leaning into the future of smart (not just big) data with machine learning. Note to WEF, it would have been great to see more machine learning, deep learning, AI companies in the candidate set

3 Not recommended Very clever solution for e-commerce site but customers (and Governments in Europe) are becoming anti-tracking and profiling and this will likely cause restrictions in their growth. Its probably a controversial area that the WEF might want to avoid.

2 Not recommended Basically mass surveillance company for the benefit of (slightly) better performing advertising. Doesn't make the world a better palce..

5 Recommended A good solution to a growing social ill which will continue because of the availability of personal information on public databases and social media

5 Recommended The demand for this solution will grow significantly as cyber solutions are developed and deployed around the world. The key relationships and business wins illustrate a winning business with a highly innovative set of technologies driving it

4 Recommended innovative, sound technology . type of approving customers

4 Recommended BlueTalon offers fine-grained data access control and entitlement for Big Data. It includes facility to mask, tokenize, audit and secure sensitive data. It offers policy engine to control rows, fields, cells and data dynamically and transparently to automate the process. Although Apache projects such as Sentry and Ranger offer basic level of security controls, its not as comprehensive as BlueTalon. However, there are vendors such as IBM, HPE Voltage Security, Imperva, Denodo, DataGuise and Informatica Dynamic masking capabilities that offer some flavor of access control/entitlement of big data, therefore its not completely unique in its offering. However, it does offer some level of innovation to control access to sensitive data to only authorized users, therefore a rating of 4 is recommended.

4 Recommended Security is critical for data protection. As there are large deployment of Hadoop happening and data lakes created, this is a technology that is needed and needs expansion and focus. BlueTalon has several deployment and that’s critical for maturity of the product Security model linked to code of the tool versus application level makes it more applicable. Competing Opensource technologies are coming up and may catch up or some of the large vendros like cloudera or Horton may make the investment and make it available thru open source too.

4 Recommended They perform well in meeting all of the criteria in addressing the most significant challenge facing technology today - data security. Builds on industry standard solutions and appears to take a rigorous approach that accounts for weaknesses in other solutions. Small company but with potential for large impact if successful at Fortune 100 companies.

3 Not recommended Blue Talon is huge if you rely on hadoop to run your business. but there are others also trying to solve th Hadoop security problem, and it is not overwhelming obvious that BT has a unique approach that can't be matched by others. And even if they are unique, they are still only a big deal for the hadoop world, which isn't as if they are solving the problem of world peace. So nice company, but way too nichy, and just doesn't get m pulse racing...

4 Recommended First to bring to the consumer 3d printing, without melting plastic. Instead they use SL technology. As a customer I can say this is exciting, but the form 1, was not ready for production use. Trying to go against the more established, larger players is a bold move, and to date they have sold more of this type of machine than anyone before. I hope they can pull off this transition, and feel they will need more funding to make it happen.

4 Recommended Formlabs has been a strong leader in fairly crowded space. Team has excellent pedigree and business has beaten most competitors to key innovative and commercial milestones

4 Recommended Poised for substantial growth

3 Not recommended Innovation is moderate but impact is likely to be quite narrow.

4 Recommended Widens accessibility to information and data that has been kept under wraps. In the long run opens up the possibilities for open source data on these topics. The initial explanation of the company and what it does is breathless cliche, but if we overcome that we get something that in the end can have high impact.

3 Not recommended Interesting technologies however the potential impact is unclear

4 Recommended Afiniti has demonstrated commercial viability and acceptance of machine learning based behavioral matching for customer service. They have been in operation for over 5 years well before the current hype bubble of AI and operate in large contact centers. They DO have a close competitor, Mattersight whose methods are similiar. As fierce competitors they both maintain that their approaches are unique, but both have advanced the concept of behavioral matching and it's ability to positively impact revenue and efficiency for large contact center operations. So my rating of 4 is in recognition of the existence of a close competitor. The large contact center vendors such as Genesys, Cisco, and Avaya who dominate this market have jointly chosen to leave this level of innovation to these close competitors.

4 Recommended One conditional question that needs clarification. The company states that revenue is $15M? With 320 employees that would imply an annual cash burn rate of at least $20M (assuming a very low salary base) and likely closer to $30M. It does not appear that the numbers here are correct or this company will be out of money soon, so please verify. They are in a very large global market and this is a very strong example of smart (machine learning) applied to large data.

3 Recommended Using real-time analytics to pair callers and agents is a novel concept. Customers (callers) feels frustrated when calling call centres to speak to different people, reset the dialogue. When seeking advice, it's human nature to prefer to speak to the same person each time.. How scalable this approach actually is remains to be seen, but it is admirable that Afiniti are giving it a try

Crowded place to enter now with all major security company fighting for the endpoint (intel, carbon9, ...) and leveraging threats intelligence (cylance, crowd strike,...) Having one of such company makes a lot of sense, to complement Crowdstrike and Lookout, but it might not be the best one

4 Recommended They are a key innovator in the space, and their technology is extremely promising. Their early clients are top-tier and though it is hard to look into the company, their reputational buzz is very positive. Finally, the overall space (cyber-crime) is hugely important as WEF has identified. I thus feel they are a good candidate

3 Recommended adrresing an important area ,in what look like as a comperhansive solution

4 Recommended Good solution addressing a need that will only grow as broadband speeds increase. Risks going forward is competition form main brands, lowering market price of propositions. At $500 they may find market in US to be small

4 Recommended I'm a customer, and love the product. Gold standard in consumer packaging, and directions to set up a complex networked device. 4 Recommended Udemy is well known and so is the MOOC category. But if you think of the impact on tomorrow's world, Udemy brings a promise which is very much in line with the WEF's intention, i.e. to improve the state of the world through democratizing access to education. What is interesting about Udemy is that this is a 2-sided democratization: students get access to online content which can change their lives, but people with skills can also become teachers using the course creation libraries Udemy has made available. This is essential to stimulate supply and not just demand for education.

2 Not recommended Udemy has raised huge amounts of funding and still hasn't figured out how to earn revenue, despite intrusive upsell attempts inside free courses ... their courses also have very mixed reviews, and trainers complain of insufficient support. The space is crowded and this does not seem like a logical survivor over the longer term. Team has relatively strong pedigree, though

3 Not recommended CloudLock are in a crowded community of services that protect users from potential malicious or insecure cloud services. They are joined in the market by a number of competitors that offer a similar service. Although the service CloudLock and other offer is a very worthy services and needed it is not unique. Sure;y one or two of the companies will be become the strong players in this market, it would be hard to say that CloudLock would be. On that basis hard to recommend as a candidate to join the community. However, CloudLock may well have an advantage in using the crowd to review cloud services that they offer protection of. Other companies rely on internal resource, which may be a limitation on scale in terms of breadth and depth of services they can consider.

2 Not recommended Not unique, and facing a serious uphill climb against larger players. Also, while cyber-security is a huge in general, this is one where the benefit to the community in general is indirect. so I respect what they are doing byt it just doesn't feel inspiring enough to qualify as a tech pioneer

2 Recommended another big data sentiment company... not very innovative

4 Not recommended Interesting approach of using statistical approach to language learning. Still very early stage and not yet proven sustainable

3 Recommended I like that this solution is based on adaptive machine learning. It is still relatively early but has proof of concept and traction via its deal with Rakuten. I would say it is worth taking a bet on this one.

4 Recommended Financial planning is another area that is ripe for technology disruption. I am familiar with Personal Capital as I was a customer about 3 years ago, and used the service for about 8 months. I did not use them for financial advice, just reporting. I found the automated reporting and the additional built-in services, like uncovering fees, to be helpful. Having all of one's assets reported on in the same place, with real-time reporting, was a big step above what any one broker can provide. Clearly they well beyond the prototype stage--they are getting market traction, generating significant revenue, and they have a growing user base. Although there is not a tremendous amount of technology innovation involved (mint.com was the first to pave the way here) they have innovated around their business model, and turned this into a viable, and, I would imagine, profitable, company.. In the end I deleted my account and transitioned to a different service, for one main reason, which was security. I was not satisfied that the company (or any startup company, really) could sustain an overt cyber attack. Because all of my accounts could be accessed through their site, I didn't feel comfortable with having one single point of potential failure, at least not without more rigorous technology, like two-factor authentication, which they didn't have at that time. They might have added it since but I don't see mention of this above, and don't see it on their site. Absent that, I think this leaves a vulnerability which could be significant. Once that is addressed, I'd move them to a 5 but think they're a 3 or 4 without it (I gave them a 4

4 Recommended I like the idea and there is a market for location where GPS doesn't work. It's early to tell how successful it will be but it seems like a good candidate.

4 Recommended This is a technology which is both proven to work, and with substantial potential impact in commercial and other situations where tracking in GPS-obscure places is a risk and security priority

3 Not recommended A lot of competitors in the space. Company's growth is not impressive considering they have been around for 12 years

3 Not recommended NIL

4 Recommended could hit big roadblocks at scale

4 Recommended SalaryFinance can meaningfully reduce interest payments of debt for most workers. This is an important innovation for freeing up capital throughout society and can have a positive impact on most people.

3 Recommended A guarded yes, with mixed feelings.I could as easily say no. Pluses: good concept, excellent management, smart focus on going to scale, focus on undercutting banks and sleazy pay-day and credit card lenders. This sort of loan consolidation absolutely needs to be an option available to the public Minuses: The founders seem overly interested in turning their company into a "unicorn" (their words in articles on the web. And they seem to have an ambiguous feeling about doing good for the consumer and doing well for themselves, which makes me uneasy. Also, it is not the company's fault, but consolidation like this is not a solution if after consolidating, consumers then go out and take up more credit card debt. My recommendation: am hoping others have evaluated them as well. And if there are other + votes, I would do some careful due diligence to be sure they are in fact as public-spirited as they claim.

Q-Track CorporationIT-Information TechnologyUSA, North America

3.5 The Q-Track Corporation is located in Huntsville, Alabama, USA. It is pioneering a breakthrough in indoor wireless tracking (e.g., Real Time Location Systems or RTLS) using low radio frequencies and a phenomenon known as the near field. Low frequencies penetrates walls better than high frequencies and does not suffer from bouncing radio waves called multipath. Q-Track's patented technology can consistently achieve one meter (or better accuracy) in indoor environments where GPS cannot function. The technology is currently being used for collision avoidance in warehouses and factories; to track nuclear workers in over 20 nuclear power facilities; and to track soldiers training for Military Operations Urban Terrain (MOUT).

SalaryFinanceBK-Banking & Capital MarketsUnited Kingdom, Western Europe

3.5 SalaryFinance is a FinTech business with a social purpose. We help middle-to-low income employees improve their financial health. We do this by enabling them to payoff their debt quicker, by dramatically reducing the interest on their debt. Our platform consolidates existing high cost debt an employee has into a single low cost loan. We collect repayments from salary (not bank account), which reduces our costs and risk, the savings from which we pass on. We charge a single low interest to all employees, which is one-third the average bank rate. Interest savings equate to a pay rise of 2-3%.

3 Recommended Good impact re reducing costs for lower income employees. Done simply by attaching to payrolls, ie in one sense there is little innovation. But it does fill a need, for those who currently find financing costs are too large a share of their spending, Overall I recommend because of the impact, though compared with other more innovative companies I am less certain about this one,

4 Recommended

4 Recommended Innovative and strong candidate from China. Also significant funding from Sequoia seems like a great validation in a fast growing sector

4 Not recommended Terrific team, solid technology (tho less innovative than they claim). BUT....the social implications are horrific. Creating a tool to allow for enhanced human surveillance that will inevitably be abused (starting in China) is no qualification for a TP award. I therefore strongly recommend against giving them an award

3 Not recommended The company looks interesting but I have lots of questions and the submission and a quick Internet search do not give me answers. How many clients does this company have outside of China? It is targeting different sectors simultaneously. Can it provide concrete proof of traction in any of those sectors? it is difficult with the limited amount of info given - and the limited amount of information available on the Web in English - to benchmark them against the competition. I think the company needs to provide additiononal information before a decision can be

d2 Not recommended Lot of knowledge in image processing but seems very early and still all over the place, not rally focused yet

3 Recommended This is a close call... maybe a 3-1/2 or 4. The company has a solid rep for innovation and leadership in their space. But about their space: cryptocurrency generally is a huge area, certain to grow and become ever more important in global commerce. But the bitcoin space in particular is quite problematic. Just too many weird unknowns in the space to feel entirely comfortable with any company working in it. so despite the fact that they appear solid, with solid silicon valley entrepreneur/investors, I can't quite get rid of reputational risk worries for WEF.

5 Recommended A good example of block chain usage for improving IAM solution, taking benefit of existing GSM infrastructure and Bluetooth specificity. Strongly backed by Samsung and Telefonica, with great advisor and security knowledge. Only reserve might be this is a bit early stage and you might want to keep it for next year

3 Recommended good leadership. highly competitive space

2 Not recommended Managing acceptable geolocations is difficult and rules out consumer IAM and work-from-home IP geolocations are unreliable on mobile devices GPS may not be available in datacenters Keeps passwords (hard to remember strong passwords) in the picture 0 revenues after 2 years Technologically undifferentiated

4 Recommended Compelling solution with tangible results that builds on technology and workforce trends. The main question - what competitive barriers have they established? Patents? Could they be displaced by a larger competitor with a focused team? This is the biggest risk that I see

3 Not recommended It's a good idea, seems to be validated by a nice revenue but there isn't a real technology behind to qualify as tech pioneer

3 Recommended This is really borderline as the company is subscale, but I love the idea of leveraging b2c photo culture to achieve b2b productivity gains among store associates, merchandizers, etc. I really do think a picture is worth a thousand words in retail.

5 Recommended

3 Not recommended too early stage

2 Not recommended While this area is a high impact area, absolutely no insight on how they have "cracked the problem." Maybe it is the way the application was written but this needs more work and better presentation to qualify as a pioneer

4 Recommended much needed technology in a growing technology market

3 Not recommended Not clear differentiator identified in a pretty busy place on bot detection and iP reputation management

2 Not recommended We all hate bots, but distil is focused on protecting large players -- hardly a social mission helping humanity. Okay board, mildly unimpressive VCs. It just doesn't feel worthy of TP.

4 Recommended

3 Recommended Great conceptual outline but almost no firm examples of solutions and customer benefits. It all sounds great but it comes down to the classic question - "so what?"

3 Not recommended Interesting company with a strong foundation, good early traction, and nice focus on specific business challenge with an audience that cares about that specific challenge a lot. . The particular application they are developing and customer base they're going after is smart so I do think they have a strong chance of being very successful, However, I just don't think their technology is as original or as innovative as they claim. There are lots of companies out there doing something similar. Doesn't rise to the level of the Tech Pioneer standard in my view.
