Reflective Statement on Standard 3 – Language Arts
Artifact: A lesson plan on main-idea sentences
STATE GOAL 3: Write to communicate for a variety of purposes.Standard 3: All teachers should give constructive instruction andfeedback to students in both written and oral contexts while beingaware of diverse learners’ needs. Teachers should effectively provide avariety of instructional strategies, constructive feedback, criticism, andimprovement strategies.
1. To me this standard deals with teachers giving students a variety of instruction
and feedback on a daily basis. It means while teaching, give students a different
way to approach a lesson and a way for you as the teacher to get feedback from
the students, both orally and through their work. This standard also deals with
writing for a variety of purposes, which I believe means writing narratives,
expository, and letters. Teachers should provide the students a variety of writing
styles so that they can develop and master each one. Also with the help of the
teacher and the teacher’s feedback, the students writing can grow. With feedback
also comes criticism and praise. I feel the younger the students, a teacher should
keep a balance of criticism and praise and as the students get older, the feedback
may not have to be as sugarcoated. I believe though that with varied instruction
and constant feedback, students will be able to learn writing with a variety of
purposes.
2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and
application of the standard.
The artifact that I chose to help demonstrate this standard is a lesson plan that I taught to

my current fifth grade class. I believe that this lesson plan in particular demonstrates this
standard first by the purpose of the lesson, which is writing main-idea sentences. Main-
idea sentences can be used in a variety of writing purposes; therefore the students can
carry this information with them to other forms of writing. I feel that this lesson also
demonstrates my understanding of the standard because within the lesson I use a variety
of feedback to the students, such as verbal and on paper. I also equip them with variety in
my teaching. Parts of the lesson are verbal, some on the white board and some on their
worksheets, both in a group and independently. I also believe that this artifact meets this
standard because the idea of the standard is to help students with a variety of writing
purposes. This lesson is focused around main-idea sentences, which can be used in all
writing. Therefore I am providing them with tools they will need down the road with any
type of writing.
2 A. If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect upon how your teaching will
change in the future to further meet the standard.
I was able to put my artifact into practice, which was a lesson I have already taught. I
believe that my teaching will change in the future to further meet this standard by stating
that the main-idea sentences aren’t just for narratives, they can be used in all forms of
writing. I believe that this will help to better incorporate the idea that this standard is
aimed toward a variety of forms of writing by planting the idea that main-idea sentences
are used in multiple places of writing. My teaching will also change in the future to meet
this standard when there are new teaching style ways to further reach every student.
There is constant information coming out on how to better reach every student’s

academically and I will continue to change my ways of teaching to achieve this.
3. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and
Learn in a Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.
This artifact has taught me that in a diverse society, a teacher needs to be able to provide
students with a variety of teaching styles to reach everyone. In my lesson I tried to use
group and independent work, along with using a white board and worksheets. I felt that
this standard has taught me to teach in a diverse society I need to be creative. When
technology isn’t available I need to create more stimulating and interesting ideas to teach
to students. I believe that this standard has also helped me to teach in a diverse society by
providing students with multiple types of feedback. Every student receives feedback
differently and I need to be aware of this.
