Steps to PromotionBy
Steve Marr
1. Is promotion desirable?
Getting promoted at work isn’t necessarily a good career move. Granted, a
promotion might result in more responsibility and increased pay, but are those
the most important factors to consider? What about job satisfaction, or utilizing
2
your skills and gifts? Only you can decide which elements of the job are the most
vital.
You may ultimately decide to pursue advancement, but before you blindly chase
a promotion, take some time to establish your principal goals. Will your goals be
enhanced if you receive a promotion? If not, don’t feel pressured to move up. Not
every worker truly wants a promotion or is suited for more responsibility. If your
personal goals are better achieved by remaining in your current job, or a similar
one, that’s OK.
Look for opportunities to grow within your present position. If you do decide to
seek advancement, the following tips will help you become more promotable.
Advancement at work begins with you. Take responsibility for learning,
understanding, and implementing key characteristics that every employer needs,
desires, and values. Make yourself promotable and the opportunities will soon
follow.
2. Set your priorities
Jesus says, “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). Put God first in your life, your
family second, and your job third. Never sacrifice your relationship with the Lord
or your family to earn a promotion. Lonely I the man or woman who gains a
promotion and loses everything else of value. Scripture teaches that “[the] book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success” (Joshua 1:8).
Reading and studying the Bible each day will give you insight into every aspect of
3
your life, including work.
3. Accept responsibility
The first key to earning a promotion is accepting responsibility for your own
career. Advancement is up to you, not your company, and not your boss. The
Bible says, “Arise, and let us go up against them, and will you sit still? Do not delay togo, to enter, to possess the land” (Judges 18:9). Once you have determined
that promotion is desirable, don’t sit around waiting for your boss to notice you,
take responsibility for making yourself visible, and pursue your objective with
determination.
The Scriptures also say that “of the gold, the silver and the bronze and theiron, there is no limit. Arise and work, and may the Lord be with you” (1Chronicles 22:16). Oftentimes we place artificial limits on our job growth and fail
to reach our full potential. Accept responsibility for learning what your boss and
your company need, want, and desire, and then demonstrate your knowledge,
commitment, and willingness to work hard. You are the primary beneficiary of
your own career growth. Work for it. Promotion is not an entitlement.
Advancement at work must be earned.
4. Check your attitude
Attitude is the most important ingredient in positioning yourself for promotion. A
negative attitude will quickly shatter your credibility, but a positive attitude will
carry you far. Scripture clearly states that controlling your anger is a key element
of a wise and positive attitude. “A quick tempered man acts foolishly” (Proverbs 14:17), and “a hot tempered man stirs up strife” (Proverbs 15:18).
4
“A fool always loses his temper, but a wise man holds it back” (Proverbs 29:11).
When we make the choice to lose our temper, we demonstrate our foolishness to
our co-workers. Selfcontrol is something that bosses look for in promotable
employees. If you have a short fuse, resolve to control your anger, and ask the
Lord to increase your patience. If you become angry, maintain your composure
and communicate in a constructive and calm manner. Focus on the issue, not the
other person. Don’t lose your temper. Commitment to serving your customers
well and delivering a high quality product or service is another vital attitude to
develop and demonstrate. Remember to serve everyone you meet in the course
of business, whether they are customers or fellow employees.
Is your work excellent, every day and every time? Don’t compare yourself to
others; instead, strive to match God’s standard as revealed in Genesis 1:31: “God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good.” Evaluate
your own work, and gauge your performance according to Galatians 6:4: “Let each one examine his own work...in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another.”
Maintain a supportive attitude toward your boss. Look for constructive ways to
help. When Israel was battling Amalek (see Exodus 17:8-13), they prevailed as
long as Moses kept the staff of God in the air. When Moses’ hands became
heavy, Aaron and Hur found a boulder for him to sit on, and then supported his
hands, one on one side and one on the other. Your boss will notice your support,
or lack if it.
Develop a passion for your work. If you can’t, it may be time to look for a different
job—one that will fire your passion. If you aren’t passionate about your present
position, getting promoted probably won’t help. The Bible says, “Because you
5
are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth” (Revelation 3:16). Though spoken by God to the church in Laodicea, the same
principle applies at work.
Maintain a red hot passion for your job. Maintain a cheerful demeanor; be upbeat
and positive. No one likes a sourpuss. In your interactions with colleagues, don’t
drag everyone else down. Rather, strive to pull everyone up to your positive
outlook.
5. Work with Integrity
Integrity encompasses honesty, keeping promises, accepting responsibility for
mistakes, and working faithfully. The Bible says, “Do not bear false witness”(Luke 18:20). This command includes direct lying, as well as lying by omission.
When questioned, be forthright, and don’t cover mistakes. Admit your
shortcomings and you will develop credibility with your boss. Fail to be
straightforward and your integrity will be shot.
When you promise to complete a task, follow through, “For there are many...empty talkers ” (Titus 1:10). If you want to be promoted, do what
you say you will do, and don’t make excuses. If you cannot complete a task, say
so up front. “If a man...takes an oath to bind himself...he shall not violate hisword” (Numbers 30:2). Credibility is established by following through on
commitments.
Accepting responsibility is another key element of integrity. Proverbs 28:13 says, “He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.” Everyone makes
6
mistakes, but the wise worker learns from his or her mistakes and implements
changes to avoid repeating errors. Admit your mistakes and you will gain your
boss’s confidence. Learn from your mistakes and you will earn your boss’s
respect.
6. Demonstrate a passion for quality
Every job has its routines. At times, your job may be dull, uninteresting, boring.
Regardless of the circumstances, however, if you want to be promoted, make up
your mind to pour your full energy into your job every day. “Whatever your handfinds to do...do it with all your might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10). If you discipline
yourself to give your best effort every day, your performance and attitude will
distinguish your work from others. Ask your boss to suggest three ways in which
you can improve the quality of your work—and then implement the suggestions.
Superior work, and a passion for quality, will create opportunities for promotion.
7. Develop a bias for action
Effective managers are active managers. When Israel stalled in the wilderness,
God spoke to Moses and said, “You have stayed long enough at this mountain. Turn and set your journey, and go...” (Deuteronomy 1:6-7). Jesus
instructed His disciples to go and do. James admonishes us to “prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves” (James 1:22). Without action, nothing is accomplished. A bias for
action—for making things happen— will demonstrate your value to your
company.
7
Distractions can easily knock us off track. Focus your time and energy on your
work, and make no allowance for wasted effort. The apostle Paul writes,
“Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim: I box in such a way, as not beating the air” (1 Corinthians 9:26). If you want to stand out above the
crowd, establish a reputation for working purposefully, completing tasks
completely and on time, and always give your best efforts toward maintaining
excellence.
8. Accept Discipline constructively
.“All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful...yet to those whohave been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit ofrighteousness” (Hebrews 12:11). Your boss has the right and the responsibility
to mold your work habits and quality to fit the needs of the business and its
customers. By accepting discipline, you will learn how to improve your work
Benjamin Franklin said, “Things that hurt, instruct.” When you are admonished or
corrected, accept that criticism as a learning opportunity, and resolve to improve
your performance.
Once you have learned an important lesson, be careful not to fall back into old
habits. When God sent the plagues to Egypt, Pharaoh repeatedly said, “I will let
you go.” But once the pressure was off, he changed his mind and refused to let
the Israelites leave. Each time, he paid a bigger price. Don’t pay twice for the
same experience.
9. Be a team player
Teamwork is essential for any successful business. Employees who demonstrate
8
their ability to get along with others and advance the objectives of the entire team
are the kind of employees who get promoted. The apostle Paul calls us to be
“team players” when he writes, “[Be] of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united In sprit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himsel f” (Philippians 2:2-3).
Key aspects of teamwork include helping others achieve their goals, and placing
the of the goals of the team and the company above your personal goals. When
success is achieved, do you take all the credit, or do you share recognition with
your colleagues? When describing the accomplishments of your team, liberal use
word “we” instead of “I” will go a long way toward establishing a team
atmosphere.
Effective teamwork also means being willing to ask for help when you need a
hand. Teamwork is a two-way street.
10. Communicate effectively
Effective communication is a two-way street There is]. “[ a time to be silent, and a time to speak” (Ecclesiastes 3:7). Learn when to voice your opinion,
when to listen, and when to simply keep your mouth shut Speak only when your
words will be helpful, constructive, and on the subject. When communicating with
colleagues, whether it’s your boss, a peer, or a subordinate, consider the tone
and the message that needs to come through.
Establish eye contact, ask questions or state your views, and wait for feedback.
Ask the other person to repeat what they heard you say, to ensure that you have
communicated effectively. If action is required, confirm what steps will be taken,
by whom and by when. Confirm significant items in writing and furnish a copy to
9
everyone involved. When receiving communication, listen carefully. Give the
other person your full attention, establish eye contact, and focus on what is said.
Be careful not to miss part of the message because you’re thinking about your
response. Listen actively: Repeat back what you understood, and confirm any
action that is expected from you.
11. Look sharp, Act responsibly
Your dress and conduct are two key factors in how perceived in the workplace.
Dress neatly and appropriately. Push the dress standard up a notch, not down.
Dress for the future job you desire, not necessarily for the one you hold today.
Whether we like it or not, other people notice how we dress. If you want a
promotion, dress accordingly. to it, and certainly don’t participate in it. Gossip is
talking behind someone’s back, complaining about others who are not present, or
finding fault with the boss. Gossip will spring up in every organization, but if you
want to advance in your career, you will not condone gossip. Treat every co-
worker with respect, regardless of their position or your personal opinion of them.
“But if you show partiality, you are committing sin” (James 2:9). Be open-
minded; don’t think that every good idea must be yours. Develop a receptive
perspective and stay open to new ideas and improved methods for completing
your work.
12. Defuse conflict
Conflict is inevitable. When disagreements arise, deal with the issues quickly and
directly. Don’t allow problems to fester and ferment Deal directly with the person
who caused the conflict or wronged you. Jesus said, “If your brother sins, go an reprove him in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.
10
But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed” (Matthew 18:15-16). If you believe that a co-worker has wronged you, your only
options are to speak to that person directly, or ask your boss to intervene.
Discussing the issue with any one else is gossip. Gossip is never helpful, and
usually will come back to bite you.
.
13. Increase your knowledge
The Bible tells us that Jesus “continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom” (Luke 2:40). If you want to advance in your company
and your career, become a lifelong learner. Your education doesn’t end when
you graduate from school or you earn your degree. Commit yourself to increasing
your knowledge in every aspect of your job and life. Perpetual learners increase
their value to a company immeasurably.
Learn everything you can about your company and its products and services.
Study the competition and look for ways to enhance service. Understand the
needs of your customers, and stay tuned to changes in the marketplace.
Advance your company and you will advance yourself as well.
Pursue additional training that will enhance your performance. If your company
offers skill-building disciplines. Take those that will strengthen your performance.
Commit to reading books and magazines (both business and trade) that will
increase your knowledge of products, your industry, and general business
principles.
14. Learn from failure
11
In business, as in life, failure can be the best teacher. When something goes
wrong look for opportunities from your mistakes. Identify the problem and take
action to correct it Adapt your processes and procedures to avoid a repeat of the
same predicament. When you interview candidates for a job, one of the favorite
questions is “Tell me about your three biggest mistakes and what you learned
from them.” Prospective employees who candidly share several experiences, and
what they learned in the process, increase the likelihood of receiving a job offer.
Resiliency under pressure is an important quality for anyone who seeks to be
promoted. Those who refuse to allow failure to keep them down will rise to top
every time. Adopt the attitude that Paul had when he wrote, “We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing;...struck down but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). Promotable people don’t become
defensive. They treat mistakes as learning opportunities; defeats merely spur
them on to further action.
15. What if you are passed over for promotion
If your colleague is promoted and your are not, don’t lose your composure. First
ask for a time to meet with your boss, or the decision maker. Explain that you
would like to be considered for future promotions and opportunities, and ask for
feedback on your work. Ask what growth, experience, or other improvement in
your work would be required in order for you to be considered for future
promotion. Act on the feedback, and ask your boss to actively monitor your
progress.

James 1:22-25 “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
13
But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it-- he will be blessed in what he does.” (NIV)
