We found five bunches of beautiful rainbow chard
growing in the roof garden early this april. We asked
farmer Eric Rosenkratz about this and it seems a mild
winter coupled with a march heat wave has led to many
leafy green veggies that aren’t normally perennial to
come back to life (in fact, they never really died). eric
farms The Living City Farm, a ten acre plot at the
Kortright Centre that supplies fresh produce to 401
richmond through a community-supported agriculture
program that we’re participating in for the second year.
We’re continuing to experiment with our own urban
agriculture projects in the roof garden and are also
hoping eric will be assisting us in launching a 401
farmer’s market for the summer so stay tuned!

GROWING COMMUNITYHilditch Architect’s (Studio 139) 40 Oaks project is
under construction. The building is part of the larger
regent Park redevelopment project and will house the
Toronto Christian Resource Centre and eighty-seven
affordable residential suites. It will also incorporate an
exciting community hub initiative that will include a
garden for on site food production, and a community
kitchen that will provide meals and facilitate
programming around food preparation.

GROWING UP AROUND USOur neighbourhood is changing rapidly. and the one hundred plus people who attended our One of the Two Kings
Jane’s Walk is a good indication that we’re not the only ones who are concerned. On may 6 Margie Zeidler and
urban mentor Paul Bedford led the tour that started at 401 richmond and moved through various sites around
the king-Spadina neighbourhood. In the 90s Paul, who was the chief city Planner at the time, was the architect
of an innovative zoning change that created the opportunity for buildings like 401 richmond to be adaptively reused
bringing new life to many historic sites. currently, this area is in the midst of an unprecedented construction and
development boom that threatens the historic fabric and mixed use vibrancy of the neighbourhood.

food into cafeterias, but we know that there’s so much
more to come. We can’t wait to see what creative and
transformative things happen when we get together.”
Sustain Ontario has adopted a many-pronged approach
to healthy food and sustainable agriculture. They have a
growing membership of over 300 organizations, food
enterprises, and public sector groups. They collaborate
with a number of other organizations across the province
(and even nation-wide) on initiatives and working groups
that are looking at a wide range of topics from meat
processing, to food policy, to a farmer’s market voucher
program. They hold events, provide resources, and really
embrace the term alliance in everything they do.
In the same way Sustain Ontario works to connect
groups, they’re also working to connect the dots
between agriculture, health, economic and community
development, and the environment. ravenna says, “We
don’t just believe that a better world is possible, we
get to see it growing every day. It’s very exciting to be
creating linkages between groups working in health,
farming, the arts, community development, communication,
and more. We get to see collaborations that are not only
fun, but that create a healthier, more sustainable place
for us all to live.”

SUSTAIN ONTARIO Studio 364Food is a hot topic these days. In this case, we’re not
talking about the latest pop-up restaurant but healthy and
sustainable food for the world’s growing population. many
groups involved in food security are looking at how to
support local agriculture (including urban and near-urban
farms), improve access to affordable and healthy options
for everyone, and educate people about how to grow their
own food and make more sustainable food purchasing
choices. Sustain Ontario: The Alliance for Healthy Food & Farming (Studio 364) is one of those very groups.
Sustain Ontario was conceived through a two year
process led by the Metcalf Foundation that brought
together food and agriculture groups who identified the
need for collaborative policy and advocacy work.
Following the publication of Food Connects Us All the
request for a provincial alliance was put forth and Sustain
Ontario was formed in 2009. Fast forward to 2012, we
find them in the midst of an office renovation that will
create a collaborative workspace with their partners-in-
food Meal Exchange (Studio 365). We worked with
the two groups on a co-location with the understanding
that something as simple as proximity can add benefit to
their shared purpose and cultivate other exciting (and
potentially unexpected) results. Sustain Ontario’s
Director Ravenna Nuaimy-Barker says, “meal exchange
and Sustain Ontario have already begun to work together
on a few projects like a national network getting good

GREYSON ZEPHANIAat the beginning of the year, Margie Zeidler established the Dr. Fraser Mustard ECE Scholarship in honour of Dr. Mustard, a tenant and friend who died last november. The yearly gift will be given annually to a person in the developing world currently working with young children that has a dream to further their education and understanding by pursuing of a degree in early childhood education (ece). The first recipient of the scholarship is Greyson Zephania who is currently a teacher at the Majengo Orphanage primary school in Tanzania and will begin his education this summer in arusha. Dr. mustard was one of the world’s leading experts and advocates on the importance on early childhood education and this scholarship honours his legacy.
