THERE ARE 153 LOCATIONS WITH 10 MILES OF UMOM! http://www.circlek.com/store-locator?language=en

There are 153 different stores within 10 miles of where you live. This is 153 stores with openings. If each store ONLY had one opening, there are 153 stores with 10 miles of you. If any of the stores need more…well, we will let you do the math.

AN INSIDER’S STUDY GUIDE TO EMPLOYMENT

As one of the nation's premier operators of more than 2000 company-owned convenience stores, Circle K strives to be the best place to shop and work. For our customers, that means fast, friendly service, and a quality shopping experience each time they visit one of our stores, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. comprehensive benefits, and opportunities for advancement… IN THE NEXT WEEKS, THEY WILL BE HOLDING VALLEY WIDE JOB FAIRS BUT, WHY WAIT TO STAND IN LINE WHEN (RIGHT NOW) THERE ARE NO LINES?

LISTEN UP CAMPERS! You are welcome to (in a couple of weeks) go stand in line with 1000’s of other applicants or you can take this inside skimmy and run all the way to the bank with it and your first pay check.

THE QUESTION IS DO YOU WANT THE FIX? You have the critical INTEL that they are getting ready to run big, all day assembly line job fairs because they need a lot of people. You now know what most no one else knows. You could wait and get there early to be first in line or you can already be working to open the door for the other applicants. This does involve work, time and effort to achieve so this is not for the lazy job seeker. This will require you change the way you conduct your job search, complete your applications and invest time to do quality (not quantity) work. The process starts with you selecting the stores that you are interested working at (you will need that info for later).

STEP ONE: APPLICATION PROCESS Put away your resume because that is not where you are going to start. You are going to start with the Circle K website (sorry this is critical – I know you hate computers but this is where you will educate yourself on not only what they need but who they are going to hire. http://www.circlek.com/

Within this very website, the employer gives you all the answers that will get you hired.

Page 7: 400K Views Issue

LET’S START YOUR EDUCATION HERE: http://www.circlek.com/history-and-timeline?language=en The very first (last question if you answer wrong) question is “Tell me what you know about Circle K. The employer specifically starts with this to determine how serious you are about working for the company; it tells them about the quality of your work and your commitment to the company. The reasoning behind this is the fact that you are (at the time of the interview) working for yourself and if you were not willing to commit to helping yourself then, what would you offer their company. The employer is looking for people who are serious about working for their company not in someone who think that this is a junk job until a good job comes along. If you feel that this is a junk job, please stay home as they will see through you and they may hurt your feelings.

LET’S START WITH A LITTLE HISTORY… Circle K’s success in the convenience retailing industry spans more than 60 years. Our roots trace back to 1951 when Fred Hervey purchased three Kay’s Food Stores in El Paso, Texas. Little did anyone know that these stores would serve as the beginning of Circle K – one of the nation’s leading convenience store chains. During the early years, Hervey’s enterprising spirit enabled the company to make its mark in the southwestern part of the United States. He grew the Circle K chain into neighboring New Mexico and Arizona, which has been the company’s home base since 1957.

Page 8: 400K Views Issue

During the next few decades, Circle K grew its retail network through a series of acquisitions, which were incorporated into the Circle K brand. By 1975, there were 1,000 Circle K stores across the US. In 1979, Circle K entered the international market when a

licensing agreement established the first Circle K stores in Japan. The company’s growth continued and by 1984 sales had reached $1 billion. In 1999, a franchise program was introduced to support operators looking to build a business with a leading convenience store brand. Now there are more than 7,000 Circle K sites operating in the US and thirteen other countries. Circle K has become one of the most widely recognized convenience store brands, known worldwide for quality products and

great customer service. We have come a long way since our humble beginnings, and we’re proud of where we’ve been and where we’re going. Please visit our timeline to learn more about the Circle K story. Circle K’s success in the

SKILLS NEEDED? Here is the really kicker, they do not post a job description so everyone assumes that you do not need a little (or even any) experience. What most (not hired) applicants failed to grasp is that experience is different than skills or abilities and this job does require a lot of skill and ability. This is where 80% of applicants fail and never get to an interview. Is this where you are at? Most of that 80% felt they did not need to try or make much effort because “Dude! It requires no experience…so I cut-n-pasted my killer, clerical resume into their application…what difference does this make…like it’s a junk job anyway!” This is a critical mistake that cost them a chance at this job.

REMEMBER experience is not the same thing as skills or abilities and when they are not asking for actual experience, they may be asking for a lot of skills mixed with ability and the dedication to do the job. You must know what the employer is looking for as the employer does not have the time to analyze that killer resume to determine if

you have the skills they need. They will bluntly tell you that this is your job to show them that you have those skills. They don’t care about anything else and have a 15 second glance to immediately see that you have the skills needed. If you did your job successfully, then they will set your application aside for further review; if you having tailor-made this application to fit their needs then, they toss your application and the killer resume gets tossed in the trash.

Page 11: 400K Views Issue

PREPARRING TO DO THE APPLICATION You are going to get one shot to do this application as you can only do one every 45 days. Mess this up or get it wrong and you will miss this window of opportunity to get hired.

As we always tell you have to use your application to impress them so it must be neat and correctly done because it is a reflection of the quality of your work. The employer (as you are not their cousin) does not know anything about you other than the application. If it is sloppy and/or incomplete then, they must assume that this is the best you can do – and you can see how this goes sideways on you…very quickly. More importantly, you must remember that the gate keeper here is a computer and it does not understand what you say because it is not programmed to understand you. The gate keeper is programmed to scan your narrative(s) and locate key words and phrases. The process is really very simple. The computer scans for key words and every time it sees one, it gives you one point. The key here is to get as close to or to get over 100 points.

Page 12: 400K Views Issue

The close you get to 100 (or more) the closer you get to having a real human being look at your application. Once you understand this simple process, you can (if you are willing to put in the effort) steer right around this gate keeper and get an interview. The real trick (which stops most people) is to find these key words and phrases. If you have followed this guide, then you know that the company did not make this easy for you. There is a paragraph job description for a store manager but, you will be hard pressed to find anything for a sales clerk. Told you that there was a trick and there are two different tricks that you can use to beat the gatekeeper and get yourself an interview. Since you are new to this process we cut you a little slack and found two workable solutions. We found a related retail company that does offer a great job description (we even did the breakdowns for you) and the other is our deer, old BFF, ONET Online. ONET Online was created by the US Department of Labor as the Webster’s Dictionary of Jobs. They have created a 5-6 page job description for every job in America. Cool? This is your job search, application and resume bible for your job search. For within the 5-6 pages are a detailed analyze of skills, abilities and (most importantly) key words or phrases.

Page 16: 400K Views Issue

This is no different than if you are in your last year of high school or college because everyone expects that you will graduate soon. Just do not explain your definition of soon is “Hey Dad! When are we going to Disneyland?” and you answer “soon.” How you do this on applications is, you mark “yes” and put a small star next to the question. Now go down to the space where for additional info or comments and put another little star. Here you tell them the name, number for the GED Class and state that you are currently enrolled in that program and that you expect to graduate “soon.” This will many times get you by. The next time they will ask you about this will be at your 90 day or 6 month review. If by then you are still without your GED, your “get-out-of-jail” card is to look them in the eye and say “you know that test was a lot harder than I thought…but, I have doubled down on efforts and I will be getting it “real soon!” If you are a good, dependable worker, they will always forget to ask you ever again…if not, they will use this as a reason to let you go.

Let’s start with…Truthfully… • How many of you have all (most) of these skills and abilities? • How many of you have done all (or most) of these things in your every day jobs? • At some point in each of your jobs, did you EVER do any of these things? • Didn’t EVERY job you EVER have require that you do many of these things? • How many of you have these skills and abilities encoded into your “KILLER RESUME?” • How many of you DO NOT have all of these things incorporated into your resume and/or (especially) your application because (guess what?) they didn’t get to see your “KILLER RESUME” and the computer didn’t accept it instead of the application? • How many of you cut-n-pasted your killer resume into the application because it is “soooooo good?” • STILL WONDER WHY YOU DIDN’T GET CALLED FOR AN INTERVIEW? • WANT TO CHANGE THIS TREND?

Page 17: 400K Views Issue

ANALYSIS This job requires little experience but (as you can see) requires a ton of ability and/or skills. Seems impossible? Not really! Have you ever run a cash register (Point of sale or POS System) ever? Did I ask how many times? No! All registers operate in the small basic way but, every company develops their own custom system that will require what?

TRAINING? Yes, every company will train you as long as you have the core (basic) skills. Can you count? Can you handle cash? So, are you qualified? Look through those customer service skills. Is there anything that you didn’t do (if you worked or were around people at all) or that isn’t part of every job? The only deal maker or breaker here is: Have/be obtaining a HS/GED. (see section above) TIPSTER: Did I ask you how many times that you did these things? Did I ask if that was the primary focus of the job? Did I ask for a breakdown of how much of your day was spent doing these? THE ANSWER TO EACH IS NO. The computer will be scanning your application for these words. The more times that the computer finds these words/phrases, the better your chances of getting an interview. So are these breakdown words in your job description(s)? Always use the full job descriptions. Read them several times…tear them apart. Pull out all of the required skills and then, go through each of your jobs and match up what they need and what you have done… THAT’S ONLY IF YOU REALLY WANT THIS JOB?

Page 18: 400K Views Issue

HOW TO START A KILLER

RESUME Start to see why we put making a resume off until last? A resume made before we went through the process to discover what the employer really needed would have missed the mark by a wide mile and would have cost you the chance to interview for this job. Even if you had worked for Circle K and it is in your resume, did you hit all the key words? Did you cover all of the skills?

TRUTHFULLY NOW! Let’s finish the application first and this will give you all of the tools you will need to make a Killer Resume for this job (and a base for related positions). We have all of the key words, we know what the employer is looking for and we know that they are ONLY interested in your experience(s) that relate to the skills and abilities that they need. Look through the key words, the skills and abilities that the employer gave you. This is the key to beating the system. We have taken the time to create an example of how this works. Please pay close attention to the process because this is a critical job seeking skill you must master. EXAMPLE: Here is the same person, the same job but, one used their normal “KILLER RESUME” to fill in the blanks and the other one used our system applying for the position listed above.

RESUME # 1 “I KNOW BETTER!” Teacher, ____Unified School District, ____, AZ Assigned to teach a full range of daily classes (with an average class size of 46+ students) that ranged from 8th grade Geography and 11th grade Business English. Each subject required a great deal of planning, prep work and in record keeping and related paperwork to include reporting to the School District and to the Federal Government in the way of the Student Free Lunch Program. Also ran the school’s concession stand at school events.

Page 19: 400K Views Issue

NOTE: This would be a standard cut-n-paste from a Killer Resume that explains what this person did. Can you see the problem with this? Is there any connection between this person’s teaching experience and the position of cashier that the employer is seeking? Will the employer understand all of the skills and abilities that this person has that would make them a great cashier? Did the applicant showcase any of their skills/abilities directly or did they merely explain what they did? How many of the employer’s key words did the applicant use? If the gatekeeper is a computer counting words, did the computer select them? Start to see why a generic “I AM- I CAN” killer resume fails short? The skills and abilities that the employer needs are never addressed by the generic resume. Start to see why people (no matter how talented) are overlooked and never interviewed? As we always tell you…your Killer Resume will cost you more jobs than it will get you just because of this issue. Now, let’s take the same person, same skillset(s) and re-write the job description with our knowledge of what the employer wants. See if you can see the difference? Teacher & Concession Stand Operator As a teacher at ______ School, I was trained to successfully operate the school’s concession stand and it required the ability to efficiently and accurately processing of all food orders for school members.

• Maintained courteous services to school members at all times. • Operating the concession stand meant that there be an unwavering

commitment to providing prompt and courteous service while obtaining student membership cards or in determining the student member’s packing preferences.

• From both training and experience, was able to provide prompt and articulated information, both verbally and/or in writing receipts.

• Developed an excellent ability to actively listen to customers, employees, school members, and managers and have a proven recognition for being able to take appropriate action(s) as were necessary.

• Always, exhibited a professional demeanor toward others and was well praised (by the school) for unselfishly service to others, assisting members or employees in a proactive means of reacting quickly and appropriately to identifying problems, find solutions, and make sound decisions to resolve the situation.

Page 20: 400K Views Issue

• Maintained a solid commitment to personal, professional honesty, integrity, and was always able to maintain a high level of efficiency and accuracy.

• Always strived to remain well-organized and be able to prioritize while adhering to deadlines but, working independently with minimal supervision from the school.

• Accepts responsibility for choices and decisions made in regards to the daily operation of the concession stand.

• Cooperated with a variety of local personalities and/or individuals from the school and parent support groups while adjusted positively to any required change in direction or assignment by the school.

• Continually made an effort to demonstrate a daily commitment to do more than one task during a work shift.

• Strived to expand upon the proven ability to comply with new programs, methods, practices, and procedures to enhance sales volume and the operations of the concession stand.

• Trained to operate a commercial point of sale (POS) cash register and enter transactions into the register.

• Received accurate payment - made change - processes checks, credit and debit charges.

• Maintain accurate register funds, handled inventory orders changes, secured cash increases/loans by means of daily bank runs and maintained money drops/deposits of excess funds back to the bank after the event.

• Required to order cash increases for large events or playoff games. • Personally responsible for conducted a count of the register in the opening

and closing duties maintained and collecting registers paperwork… • Required to follow proper safety procedures, standards and responsible for

cleaning the Front End area while adhering to all (OSHA) safety and security procedures

• Transferred and accurately scanned merchandise - collected payment and made change when necessary.

• Handled all front end opening and closing tasks. Recorded the sale of items to the register with the option 10-key pad (10 Key SKILL 5,000 KPM) or more commonly with a barcode scanner.

• Monitored the accurate scanning of all merchandise. Requested Supervisor (Principal) verification for high-ticket, BOB, or non-transfer items.

Page 21: 400K Views Issue

NOTE: First the job description is much more detailed and focused upon what they did while running the concession stand and less focused upon teaching. The change in focus goes back to the employer saying that “if it doesn’t have anything to do with cashiering…I don’t want to hear it!” But, remember, the employer is looking more for soft skills (customer service – the ability to work with and deal with people) than they are on the technical side of money handling. The applicant by focusing upon running the concession stand was able to showcase that they had the skill(s) (and the experience) that the employer was seeking without the distraction of a dictionary definition of what a teacher does. The applicant can do this because the employer didn’t ask “how much time did you do this?” Instead, the employer asked “did you every do any of these things (that they were looking for) in this job?” Go back and count up how many key words that the applicant utilized? How close are we to 100 in this one job description? Now add to the mix that while the applicant does not have cashiering (money handling) in their other jobs, do they not have those soft skills that the employer needed? Every job involves the same soft skills (customer service) that the employer is seeking. How many more key words can be used in each (additional) job description? Are we talking about a computer selected, killer applicant? Ya! Get it?

APPLICATION COMMON SENSE: • Most required skills that will be general by nature. • Do not over complicate this! Customer Service is Customer Service if I am in retail or if I am an auto mechanic. REALLY! What is Customer Service? Isn’t it making sure that you customer has what they need and that they are happy with that? SEEZ!

• Operating a cash register at the repair shop is no different than at any other store. Realize that if you have the basic operation down pat then you are good to go – as every store has a different system on which they will need to train you…if you have the basics. • They are looking for skills and your ability to perform certain duties. They are not asking you how many times you actually did

Page 22: 400K Views Issue

something but, rather, do you have the ability to do the task. If the job is riding a bicycle, do they really care where you learned to ride the bicycle or do they care if you know how to? SEE! • They are not asking you how many times you do an actual task. Only the government will ask you to do that kind of breakdown to what fraction of time per day did you perform each task. • Do not assume that the computer (or for that fact an employer) will understand every aspect of your job and realize that they will not connect the dots for you. That is not their job, it is yours! If you really want the job connect the dots (match up your skills with their requirements). • Understand that this is required to get the job and that the more time you spend to do a quality application the better you chances are of getting called for an interview. Volume does not count especially if they are done incorrectly. There is no such thing as close in applications…this is not a game of horseshoes, it is your future, your ability to get a job and return your life to normal.

OPTION NUMBER TWO In the first option we used the job description from a related company since they had a detailed job description for us to use. The other option (and usually the easiest to use) is ONET Online. We have included it to give you a sample of how vital it is to creating an application that will get selected. What we haven’t done is the breakdown and analyze for you. You need to learn sometime and you need to be more proactive in this application than we are. Use the same breakdowns and then group the key words into categories like we did. Did you get the same breakdown as the first or is there a difference? What have you learned from this process? 41-2011.00 Cashiers Bright Outlook Bright Outlook http://www.onetonline.org/find/match/1/41-2011.00?s=convenience%20store

THE USED JOB SHACK INSIDER: Read the bold tales of those who courage the interview process here @ Circle K. Each will tell you of through pathway to employment. TIPSTER: Hey campers! The way I read this is that those who applied in person got hired much quicker than those who did not. Read through these stories and you will find no need to panic, stress or worry about the interview process. WHY? Because, if you have done your homework, have the availability that they need and came across as you play well with others without trying to become a local neighborhood spider man; you have a really good chance to come home with a job offer.

Customer Service Representative Interview Application Details: I applied online. The process took 1+ week – interviewed Interview Details: The hiring process was started online. I received a call less than a week later and was basically asked if I wanted the job on the spot. About two days later I went to the store where the job opening was located and did a meet and greet with the Assistant Manager. I was informed that due to my prior customer service jobs (2 other CSR jobs from freshman, sophomore college years) they could tell I would be able to easily perform any assigned duties. After they went over employee information I was sent to take a food handlers permit. The process was very simple and the Assistant Manager was very courteous.

Page 29: 400K Views Issue

Interview Questions: No real difficulty with my experience. Though I have heard that some managers ask, "If you were an animal, what would you be and why." Negotiation Details: No negotiation, 1 dollar above minimum wage. It felt like they take into account your experience, but mostly how much they like you.

Cashier Interview Application Details: I applied online. The process took 2 days – interviewed Interview Details: Good initial application process via the internet only. They lay out all that is expected of you and how you will be compensated. Good interview process face to face. They don't hide anything from prospective employees. It's hard work, standing for up to eight hours, working in cold climate (walk in coolers), hot climate (working outdoors), occasional heavy and repetitive lifting (stocking store with supplies and inventory), and how to maintain a safe work environment (dropping cash in safe, often) so as not to attract robberies. Interview Questions:

• How to deal with an angry customer? They are testing you to see how you handle yourself and represent the company. I thought very carefully about this before I answered it. You would think, well duh, but some people just don't know how to interview. Negotiation Details: This is entry level and it is an employer’s market so, unless you have a lot of experience in the field and you want to be a manager than take what’s offered...

Customer Service Associate Interview Application Details: I applied in-person. The process took a day – interviewed Interview Details: Met manager and took pre-employment test plus background check. After passing both was offered a position at 40 hrs. per week as a customer service associate with 90 day raise and yearly after Interview Questions: Are you willing to work midnights?

Customer Service Representative Interview Application Details: I applied online. The process took 2 weeks – interviewed - Interview Details: One interview with store manager one interview with area manager. Got the job and then you have a paid truing test if you don't finish in time you don't get the job. Overall it was easy, and they say they are all about customer service so emphasize that when you go in. Interview Questions: why do you want to work for circle k?

Page 30: 400K Views Issue

Customer Service Representative Interview Application Details: I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks – interviewed Interview Details: Initial application filled out online with attached resume and cover letter. Store manager called number on resume and physical interview set up. Offer made for p/t only no fulltime offers at this time. $8.00 per hour offer made pending background check. Interview Questions: If hired how long would I expect to work for the company?

Customer Service Representative Interview Application Details: I applied online. The process took 3 days – interviewed Interview Details: Place Application online i got a call the next day to come in for an interview. Upon arrival I waited in a tiny little hallway and waited my turn during the interview the man was a decently friendly sort, neither over imposing nor a pushover. Simple interview with standard questions. Interview Questions: What kind of lifestyle do you like to lead?

Cashier Interview Application Details: I applied in-person – interviewed at Circle K. Interview Details: Brochure application (paper app). Simple, basic questions, turned in application, and was told that I'd have to take a test and get green to pass. Simple questions and the manager got the result within minutes and I got the job. Interview Questions: The most difficult question was what I wouldn't mind doing and to mark ask that applied. I didn't mind doing everything but that's not an option do I picked a random answer and explained it to the manager. Also they ask about a sale on tornados that are 4 for $1.60 but the customer buys 5 so what's his total. They don't give you the original price so I put I don't know and explained it to the manager.

NO FRAUDS, THEFT, NO VIOLENT (DOMESTIC VIOLENCE) CRIMES NOR SO’s. Others will be reviewed based upon the age, nature of the crime and if it related to the job applied for.

Store Clerk Interview Application Details: I applied through other source. The process took 3 days – interviewed at Circle K Interview Details: When going back for a second interview, they were using two different rooms and one person conducting the interviews. So there was no one to direct the many prospective employees and let them know they needed to sign-in, pick-up paperwork in one room then go to the second room to fill it out and sit and wait. The wait turned out to be an hour past the appointment time. And then we were told she didn't have any more time and the people that were left would need to come back the next day. A few days after that I was called and told they wanted to hire me and I needed to go to food classes. The same day I was offered another job that was full time and paid a lot more. So I called to let Circle K know I would not be accepting their offer. I left a message for the interviewer to call me back. I did not get that call back, but I did get a call after a few days asking me why I hadn't gone to the food class (in a rude manner) Interview Questions: How much money I would expect to make and then was told they only pay $8.00 per hour and they only hire part time. I had to bite my tongue to keep from saying ok I'll just skip eating and making mortgage payments. Since they don't give you a set schedule it makes it difficult to get a second job.

Assistant Manager Interview Application Details: I applied online. The process took 5 days – interviewed. Interview Details: The office was very small and confined, but it was organized and cozy. The Manager was very professional and polite. She made me feel very comfortable. She started off by asking me about my personality and people skills. She was surprised to learn that this was my first job, but was willing to give me a chance, once she learned more about me. The interview and hiring process was very quick and easy. I was training on the computer the next day! Interview Questions: If I had any questions for them.

Page 32: 400K Views Issue

Store Clerk Interview Application Details: I applied in-person – interviewed at Circle K. Interview Details: Very well formatted. Done almost immediately. The marketing supervisor rearranges his schedule if the store needs an immediate person. Very great listening skills on their part. Informative Interview Questions: Where do you live? Can you work the midnight shift?

Customer Service Representative Interview Interview Details: Started off by filling out application online. Was contacted a week later by phone. Did a little phone interview. Then I was told to come in for 1 on 1 interview. Interview was pretty easy. Normal questions were asked nothing too hard. We did the interview in manager’s office. Office was very small and cluttered. No drug test. Interview Questions: If there is one thing you can change about yourself, what is it?

Cashier Interview Application Details: I applied in-person. The process took 2 weeks – interviewed Interview Details: I personally had to apply, then call every day for about 2weeks straight, then finally got a call back, got an interview to set up the background check, after 8 days, I received another interview that went over the report, and was offered the job, and started 3 day later. It was rather easy, compared to other experiences, but like every job, you must show you're interested. Interview Questions: None. An important part of your training at Circle K is to teach you not to be a local neighborhood Spiderman. What this means is you do not stop beer runners and others…If you try to be a hero, when the cops show up, you will be the one going to jail. The second interview with your store’s manager will focus on how you deal with this and how you handle angry customers. Be concerned but tell them that you believe that the store’s rules are there for a reason and you would follow them while insuring that no harm comes to fellow staff or customers.

Page 33: 400K Views Issue

Remember you will have one chance to get this right, so (if you are seriously want this job or to work with this company) you need to take your time and do it correctly and neatly. As we have told you, this is because this is a sample of the quality of your work (ability to follow through and follow instructions). Now that you know what skills and abilities that the employer needs and you have gathered all of your key words and phrases, you are ready to start the application. Several things we need you to focus on are: You need to focus on what the employer wants and talk only about the matching duties in your job narrative. If I was an auto mechanic applying for a customer service job, the last thing I would talk about is repairing cars instead I would focus my job description on dealing with people, resolving conflicts, researching and negotiations. Not a word about how well I can repair their car as that is not important to them and they will not understand the customer service aspect of your job unless you explain it. You need to focus on adding as many key words to the description as you can. You can add three…four…six words to every sentence. Go back and count up how many you used. Are you near 100? If not and/or you have more space, keep adding until you do. Review the completed application several times before you hit enter. Then press enter. You have finished the first part of this process with one exception.

NOW GET OUT YOUR KILLER RESUME… Now let’s review that killer resume and see if it was for this job. As you look through the killer, do you see the same skills and abilities listed and are they in the same order? Go through the killer and count key words. How many do you have? Does your killer match up with what the employer actually needs? So now you see how far you were off and imagine how many others you have missed by a mile. Now that you have been through this process you can see that your killer resume has been costing you jobs and has ruining

any further chance for opportunities with many of these companies you mast mailed it out to.

Page 34: 400K Views Issue

NOTE: For this job you do not need a resume unless you are applying for a management position. But, if you want one as your security blanket, we need you to modify it completely. Load it up in MS Word and let it rip (tater chip). We need you to gut the job descriptions…wipe them out and replace them with the ones that you wrote for your killer application. By doing this, you now have a killer resume for this position (and a good base for similar jobs in this industry). Print it out on regular copy paper.

NO FANCY RESUME PAPER! The reason is the bottom line. You are not applying for a senior management position and fancy paper may cost you a job because everyone knows that it is expensive and if you are that free with your own money, then what would you be with the company’s? As Bill Clinton always reminded us “Keep it Simple!”

http://www.circlek.com/store-locator?language=en Remember that there are 153 different stores within 10 miles of where you live. This is 153 stores with openings. If each store ONLY had one opening, there are 153 stores with 10 miles of you. If any of the stores need more…well, we will let you do the math. Listen up CAMPERS! You are welcome to (in a couple of weeks) go stand in line with 1000’s of other applicants or you can take this inside skimmy and run all the way to the bank with it and your first pay check. Here is the inside track that will lead you to a job before the job fair… Go back to their store location web page and put in either your home zip code or the zip code of where you are going to live. Pull up the list. There is a list of all the locations near you starting with the closest. Write or print your list. This is your visit location list. Yes, you need to go out and introduce yourself to the store manager, impress them with how serious you are and ask them to pull your application because you live in the neighborhood (or are getting ready to).

GET A BUS ROUTE BOOK FOR THE MAP… Get the bus book and use the map to plot out the locations. Make a route as many of you are on public transportation and have limited access to bus passes. Also, if the location is not on the bus route and you cannot walk or ride your bicycle to that location drop it off your visit list. Being able to easily get to work is one of your main selling points.

Page 35: 400K Views Issue

DRESS NOT FOR SUCCESS BUT TO GET THE JOB Do not listen to any fool who tells you need to go out wearing a power suit. The power suit will cost you as many jobs as your original killer has. Your actual dresses for success for these jobs are clean clothes, a recent bath/shower and comb your hair. Anything else is overkill and it will create a serious disconnect between what the employer sees and the job you are applying for. Don’t believe us? Try showing up dressed to the “nines” with your killer pro resume and we bet you that the manager will automatically assume you are applying for a management position. This is where everything goes sideways when you explain that you were applying for a sales clerk job. The manager will look at you, look at your killer resume and say something to the effect of “OH? You might not like that job because it is dirty work…” See, they already made their mind up about you based on how you looked…reverse “dress for success.” REMEMBER, clean clothes, a bath and combed hair. No one will look at your shoes until your hired and then they will only want to know if they are non-slip shoes. ====================================================

GETTING THE INTERVIEW… REQUIRED EQUIPMENT: Note Pad, pencil, several black ink pens, homemade business cards and/or you redesigned Killer Resume. Timing is critical to you being able to talk to anyone. You need to hit them at non-busy times (9:00 AM – 11:00 AM or 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM). Any other times it will be hit or miss as everyone is too busy to talk to you. What is also critical is how you start this conversation. Never start with are you hiring as the normal answer would be “NO.” You must understand that the staffs are not your cousins; they do not know you and see no interest in helping you. Never start with “Can I talk to the manager?” This and all of the old standards no longer work and haven’t worked for a long time now (5+years).

THE BETTER WAY TO WORK THIS… Instead you want to start the conversation with something to the effect of “Since I live here in the neighborhood, I thought that I would come down and introduce myself because I did an online application for your store and I was wondering if

Page 36: 400K Views Issue

ANYONE would have a few moments to talk to me about the job and any UPCOMING openings because, I have always wanted to work for Circle K…” Usually if you come across as serious, excited to want to work there, live in the neighborhood, are wearing clean clothes, have some people skills and hit them at a non-busy time, they will want to talk to you. Thank whoever you talk to and tell them that you appreciate the opportunity to talk with them about working with Circle K. If this is a different person, restart that you live in the neighborhood (or are going to) and then ask them to pull your application. Since you are prepared, the rest of the conversation will go well. At the end of the conversation, get their card or name and contact number to be able to follow up (big reason many do not get hired – they give up too easy and never call back or revisit to follow up). Leave them your homemade business card (we tell you how to make these all the time) with a direct contact number (a number where you will pick up the phone and answer it directly or that you have the ability to return a call with 30 minutes – the employer will give you an hour window before the figure you are already working elsewhere or that you really didn’t want the job after all). This first trip needs to be in person. You need to introduce yourself directly because they need to meet you, see that you are the complete package and then, you can follow up with regular calls (if it is in the neighborhood, please do stop in and don’t call as the call detracts from the image of you as a serious candidate or makes you seem too lazy to come over – if you are too lazy to come over to get the job then you might be too lazy to come to work).

FINAL THOUGHTS… Get out there with you “A” Game and just keep talking until they hire you or they threaten you with a restraining order. If you want this job and want to start right away then you must get pro-active and help yourself. We have given you the tools, the methods and the reasoning behind the methods; so it is on you and how much you really want to go back to work.

UPCOMING JOB FAIRS: June 22nd Tempe/Sctd Continental and Scottsdale Rd. June 26th Glendale 43rd Ave and Glendale We have two new store openings coming up which we are hiring for too. Page 37: 400K Views Issue

We have all been there and still wake up in the middle of the night screaming about those "tell me about a time..." STAR QUESTIONS…These are those nightmare questions that trip us up because it puts us on the spot to come up with a good story about how we reacted and changed the world. These questions are a minefield that will quickly destroy your best argument about being a team player or in the prowlers of your customer service skills. The solution is to come prepared with a short list of "feel good" stories with a happy ending.

You have heard and know that they ask you these questions at most interviews. You have been there at an interview and it is going great and you can already see yourself celebrating the new gig when they throw out a Star Question and it feels like you just hit a break wall doing 80 mph. You fall apart and you feel yourself crashing and burning. Been there…done that? Is there…are their solutions? Well Campers! The UJS will be working you forward with this in upcoming issues of the Used job Shack. Here is a general overview to the problem and as we go forward we will string you along with useful tips, suggestions and INTEL…we have got to keep you reading…didn’t you know?

Page 38: 400K Views Issue

Tell me about a time when you went out of your way to help a customer. This trips you up by how they would define "go out of your way" and what will make you look good. Best thing to remember that you can expand this out to your real life as the answer does not need to be job related and you can draw from past experiences.

Tell me how you have dealt with an angry customer: Remember that most angry customers are angry because they believe that no one is listening to them. So the story starts at that point and then flows into how they left happy and still send you x-mas cards. The more pro interviewees might want to insert their beliefs on customer service and life. Tell me what you would do if you saw a co-worker stealing: You first must understand that this is an issue with this company and you must have a very unhuman response and be willing to send your grandma to prison for stealing three pieces of popcorn off the counter. To answer otherwise, you will be a part of the problem rather than the answer they were looking to hire. Short of being willing to hang shoplifter on the streetlight pole outside the store, you need to be a part of their loss prevention plan instead of a human being. Other questions will be focused on what the employer sees as their enteral problem(s) and are designed to tell them what your opinion is and to see if you are the solution... While these are not STAR QUESTIONS it is important to approach them in the same manner as the co-worker stealing... The result is the opportunity to talk about the impact you made. Give specifics and use numbers whenever possible. Show the employer that you do to have value and are worthy of them taking the risk on you. If the result of your story wasn’t entirely positive (which we don’t really recommend you using unless you are a masterful storyteller), state the negative outcome as well but try to illustrate how your actions mitigated the loss and improved the situation (a valuable skill in its self).

Page 39: 400K Views Issue

Stay Honest. Yes, the purpose of an interview is to get a job. But it’s also to determine if you’ll be a good fit. Your employer wants you to be happy and fit in. Statistically speaking, you’ll make a better employee if you do, and you’ll stay longer. Of course that’s what they want. But you’ll likely know early on if the company won’t be a good fit for you, and it can be hard to admit that. Whatever you do, stay honest with yourself and your potential employer. It’s the right thing to do.

Thoroughly Understand the Position Dig deep when inquiring what your day will look like. Ask for specific answers, so you can get a clear picture of your responsibilities. This will give you a better idea of the value of that position. Additionally, you should know the industry standard pay rate for the job.

Page 40: 400K Views Issue

Pretend You’re Buying a Car While going about your negotiation, think of it like you’re shopping for a car. But, instead, you’re shopping for a job. And instead of negotiating a price, you’re negotiating a salary. There are two key elements to car buying and finding a job: 1.Research - 2.Preventing yourself from getting taken advantage of…Be like the ninety percent of people who research a car online before going to a car lot, and do your research about an employer before going to the interview. At the same time, remember that you’re not actually getting a car. Don’t try to “win” the negotiation by milking the employer for all you can. Focus on the job first, and the salary second. =========================================================================================

A long-coveted grocery store could be coming to downtown Phoenix. A grocery could be part of a new development project slated to be built at the Central Station transit hub at Van Buren Street and Central Avenue. Chicago-based Smithfield Properties LLC wants to build a $72 million, 34-story apartment tower on a city-owned parcel that now houses the transit hub. Smithfield principals have been telling real estate brokers and economic developers in private

meetings that a grocery store may be inked for the ground-level retail component of the project, according to an official familiar with the situation. A grocery store has long been desired for downtown Phoenix with more apartments and condos planned for the area and Arizona State University growing its downtown campus footprint to 11,500 students. There is speculation that Fry’s Food Stores Inc. could be the grocery looking at a downtown store. Fry’s is owned by Cincinnati-based Kroger Co. Smithfield principals did not respond to requests for comment. The city of Phoenix awarded Smithfield development rights, which include property tax breaks, last year…

NOTE: This shows the importance of following the business news on a regular basis. What did we learn here? First, we learned that the transit hub that we all use and love is going away – which will make going to and from downtown more difficult. More long term, we learned that there will be a major (a year-long or longer) construction project here in our backyard that will bring employment to hundreds of under employed construction and labor workers – and we know who the build is and that we can get a list of the construction companies that they will be using. Finally, there will be a better grocery choice than CVS in the downtown area – within walking distance from ASU (which will need up to 200 workers). =========================================================================== Based on skill and experience…

We need the best line cooks available! We are part of the Fez, Switch, Corduroy and Pizza People Pub family. We are hiring 4 cook staff! Part time and Full time available. Great loyal customers. APPLY IN PERSON ONLY 10AM-6PM Daily (CLOSED MONDAYS) at Corduroy Restaurant for ALL positions (2601 N Central Avenue) or Switch, right next door (2603 N Central). NOTE: OK Campers! This is it…this is all that the employer threw us as a bone. A lot of the needed details are missing and it becomes more difficult to prep. We must assume that at $12-17/Hr. they are looking for Pro cooks not rookies and that narrows the job pool considerably. They will be looking for specialists in their style of cooking. What is that? That is your prep work to find out by looking at their menu, their specials, and the website and even read their consumer reviews on www.yelp.com to have specific talking points at the interview. As a Pro you already know to do that.

Let us introduce you to a new term that will have more value to you than Dress for Success. The new term is…

“DRESSED TO GET THE JOB” The primary factor here is to go with what you have and be more concerned with how well your skills/abilities match with what they employer needs. Clean clothes, a recent bath (shower) and you being able to showcase the skills the employer needs is your real ticket to getting hired and making how you were dressed a non-issue…

“BUT I DON’T HAVE INTERVIEW CLOTHES!” Every day I see good people with great skills eliminate themselves from going to work because they believed that they needed “INTERVIEW CLOTHES.” The sad truth is that what they had was OK because they were not applying to be a

corporate bigwig @ IBM but wanted to get an entry level job here in the neighborhood. These kids have been brainwashed to believe in long dead mythologies about how you must search for a job. Every day, I see other people (with fewer skills) take their dream job way because they were immobilized by the fear that had been instilled in them about the proper way to dress at an interview. If you need certain clothes, they will tell you what you need and we can help you get the clothes that you need to start. (FOR UMOM CAMPERS ONLY - SORRY)

TIPSTER: Saw three people lose jobs this week because they gave a bogus contact phone, didn’t have any minutes on their phone because they were talking to their cousin about the Walking Dead or didn’t have their voice mail set up or it was full.

YOU MUST HAVE A DIRECT CONTACT NUMBER Which means that you have a phone that you pick up and say “hello.” Or that you can return a call in 30 minutes as the employer gives you a window of one hour before calling the next person. If you don’t call back in that time frame, they will assume that you are working elsewhere or that you really were not interested in the job after all. Then, they will call the next person on their list and they will get your job – not because they were more qualified but, because they answered their phone. ===========================================================================

YOU ARE NOT THE IRON CHEF SO DON’T ACT LIKE YOU ARE ON FOLLOWING UP! Following up is critical to getting hired as they interview a lot of people with only a few staff to do everything. If you have not heard from them, you need to make the effort to drop by and ask about your status.

DO NOT CALL AS A FOLLOW UP! Calling them to do a follow up is the easiest way to get a “NO” answer from them because they are very busy. How would you feel if in the middle of your interview, they had to stop and find some paperwork for some inpatient person calling them?

Page 63: 400K Views Issue

LAZY PEOPLE CALL! SERIOUS PEOPLE SHOW UP! Unless they call you and you are returning their call, do not call them for an update. Serious people who REALLY want the job will come down and be prepared to wait for them to have time to talk with you.

This is critical! This is an important part of the decision to hire you if you are a borderline hire. We have seen companies deliberately leave you sitting in the lobby to see how serious you really are. One time it was almost an hour! THE WAY THEY FIGURE IT IS THAT IF YOU ARE STILL THERE AFTER AN HOUR…YOU MUST REALLY WANT TO WORK FOR THEM. Show that you are serious and that you have patience with them as this builds you a lot of goodwill and additional consideration(s). Feel uncomfortable just walking in and asking if Ms. _________ would have a few moments to talk to you? What we would suggest is: (Go dressed like you are ready to go to work, walk in at a non-busy time AM/PM and say) “I was in the neighborhood and I thought that I would stop by and say hello as I was here the other day for an interview…Oh, would Ms. ______ have a few moments? Would it be possible to ask about my status?” If they say that she is busy, say “I have some time and I don’t mind waiting. Thanks!” =====================================================================
