Commander’s ColumnJuly is finally here, now the fun begins; Independence

Day parades, fireworks, BBQs and lots of food. But the Post has a lot of work to do, still. The 4th of July parade needs planning and all the logistics involved in the operation of it.

Please join us at the parade, if you can, and cheer on all the veterans. We owe them more than we can ever pay back; our Freedom, our way of life, and a great country to live in with the security and peace of mind that comes with all their hard work and dedication.

Our representatives at convention this year are Rich Greenwald as our Judge Advocate, Jeff Adams as our new Jr. Vice Commander, and last but not least, Nicole Dedick as our Adjutant. We are well represented. I would also like to thank the Ladies Auxiliary Unit 80 for their generous donation to the Post; it will be put to good use.

New membership year starts July 1st; let’s not wait till the last minute to send in your renewal. As soon as you get it, fill out that check for $40 and send it in. Let's get ahead of the game this year. Have a great July and I’ll see you at the Post sometime this summer.

John Cruz Commander

Auxiliary News – July 2015Extra, Extra, Read All About It

Illinois American Legion AuxiliaryStill Helping Veterans

At our June meeting, we had our Past Presidents Ceremony, and gave thanks for the knowledge passed

down to us from our Past Presidents. We enjoyed the company of all the Past Presidents able to attend: Midge Zielinski, Bonnie Wisbrock, Karen Greenwald and Therese Schey Past President (4 times served with another unit). It was nice sharing a meal and lots of laughter with you all.

Our other guests that evening were Commander John Cruz, Past Commander David Wisbrock, Past Commander Jack Border, and Richard Eldorado. Thank you, Dave Wisbrock, for the lovely slide show of our Past Presidents and past Auxiliary events.

Our Poppy donations were good this year and we hope for better next year. Richard Eldorado was our first place winner for collecting poppy donations and Commander John Cruz was second place. Thank you, all Auxiliary and Legion members, for your help in collecting donations this year.

The 4th of July is around the corner, so I encourage all that are able, to participate in our parade. If you are not able to participate, come and watch it and give your support.

Please join us August 22, 2015 for our new Officers installation.

Our next meeting is September 14, 2015

Respectfully Submitted,

Kim Cruz, Unit President

America the Beautiful....O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain . . .

The author of "America the Beautiful," Katharine Lee Bates, was born in Falmouth, Massachusetts in 1859 and grew up near the rolling sea.

Bates, who eventually became a full professor of English literature at Wellesley College, made a lecture trip to Colorado in 1893 and there she wrote the words to "America the Beautiful." As she told it, "...It was then and there, as I was looking out over the sea-like expanse of fertile country spreading away so far under those ample skies, that the opening lines of the hymn floated into my mind."

On July 4, 1895, Bates' poem first appeared in The Congregationalist, a weekly newspaper. Bates revised her lyrics in 1904, a version published that year in The Boston Evening Transcript, and made some final additions to the poem in 1913.

For several years "America the Beautiful" was sung to almost any popular air or folk tune with which the lyrics fit: "Auld Lang Syne" was one of the most common. Today it is sung to a melody written in 1882 by Samuel Augustus Ward, a Newark, New Jersey, church organist and choirmaster. When the National Federation of Music Clubs sponsored a 1926 contest to elicit new music for Bates' poem but failed to find a winner, Ward's music prevailed.

"America the Beautiful" has been called "an expression of patriotism at its finest." It conveys an attitude of appreciation and gratitude for the nation's extraordinary physical beauty and abundance, without triumphalism. It has also been incorporated into a number of films including The Sandlot and The Pentagon Wars. Its lyricist, Katharine Lee Bates, died March 28, 1929, and is buried in Falmouth, Massachusetts, and its composer, Samuel A. Ward, died on September 28, 1903, in Newark, New Jersey.reprinted from the Library of Congress website:http://lcweb2.loc.gov/diglib/ihas/loc.natlib.ihas.200000001/default.html
