Commander’s ColumnThank you, Bob McGuffin, for conducting another highly

successful Oratorical Competition! The result is two (2) extremely fine representatives sponsored by our Post moving forward in the competition to higher levels in the American Legion competition. Having presented at the (former) County level at Cantigny on January 8th, they’ve both moved forward to present at the District level on January 15th.

Operation Support Our Troops has thanked our Post for collecting 1,523 lbs. of goods in 2016 to be sent to our troops. Credit goes to Don Brescia, who collects items and delivers them to the OSOT warehouse for shipment on a weekly basis. Kudos to Don for his ongoing dedication to lifting the morale of our troops.

Don’t forget our annual Super Bowl Party on Sunday, February 5th. A simple dry goods donation to the Fish Pantry gets you in the door and the potluck dishes are second to none. We’ll undoubtedly have our usual 50/50 raffle and special bar prices. See the flyer in this issue.

Check out the notice about the proposed changes to our Constitution & By-Laws that include a new section of Standing Rules. This is the end result of substantial effort by Rich Greenwald to help us operate easier with less formality, and has undergone several revisions after several active members proofed it.

Our snowbirds have flown the coup, so we could use some help with Bingo on Tuesday nights. The tasks are easy and we have some fun doing them, as we interact with many of the players. Though the attendance player attendance usually is the lowest in February, we still need to cover all the positions.

Tuesday, February 14th is Valentine’s Day, so don’t say I didn’t give you a heads up. We’ll also have some special items for our Bingo players.

Looking forward to March, our New Member Initiation will take place on March 18th. Invitations will soon be sent to our new

members. The order of events will be a little different this year, as we’ll have cocktails starting at 5:00pm with the ceremony at 6:00pm. A St. Patrick’s Day special dinner and entertainment will follow the ceremony. I’ll put a reminder in next month’s Commander’s Column and include a flyer in the Newsletter.

As I hear people complaining about the cold weather it makes me think that some people should use a glue stick instead of chapstick. Their reliance on the weather forecaster reports using the “computer models” reminds me that artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity. But then, who can be wrong so often and keep their job?

May you always walk in sunshine.

“Serving and Protecting those who serve and protect”

So, it looks like we made it through January without any disasters. Hopefully February will come and go just as uneventfully as January did. Thanks to all of the hearty souls who braved the cold to come out to our January meeting. Thanks also to all for my Birthday greetings. I appreciated everyone’s good wishes.

On the 15th of January, we were fortunate to have both Jan Martinka, District #11 President and Rosemary Mulligan, District #11 Education Chair and Past 2nd Division and 11th District President, come out to give us a Leadership class. After a great lunch, Rosemary reviewed the meanings of our Auxiliary symbol and also the Preamble that we recite at every meeting. We then got some in-depth education on the history of both the Auxiliary and the committees that were formed. I am sure that all present learned several things that they had not already known. Both Rosemary and Jan are very willing to come back for other classes, so if there is something that you would like to have included in a meeting, let Therese or me know and we can arrange for them to return.

Patriotic bracelets are back for 2017! We will begin to sell them after the February meeting. I will have them at Bingo and also at the meetings and other events, so let me know how many you need. I hope that everyone does the same great job selling them as they did last year. The price is the same - $5.00 – as it was last year so let’s try to make 2017 better than 2016.

At the January meeting, a nominating committee was formed to put together the slate of officers for 2016-2017. If you get a call you about taking a position for next year, please seriously consider the request. If we all pitch in, we can do so much more for the veterans who deserve so much from all of us.

CONSTITUTION & BY-LAWS REVISIONSRich Greenwald, our Judge Advocate, has drafted revisions to the Post

2 Bee-GoneThe day after Christmas was an unusually warm day in

the 50’s and a prime opportunity to take a peek and see if our beehives needed more food in the way of the candy boards installed in late October. As Dick Rooney cracked open the tops to inspect the beehives at the Legion, 2 of the 3 hives were found to be dead to our disappointment. The good news is that the third remains strong and healthy (so far).

This will be a slight, but not disastrous, setback to the Environmental Scholarship Awards since the new hives to be installed early Spring will not have to build out the honeycombs.

The History of Celebrating George Washington's Birthday(abridged)

George Washington's Birthday is celebrated as a federal holiday on the third Monday in February. It is one of eleven permanent holidays established by Congress.

Federal holidays apply only to the federal government and the District of Columbia; Congress has never declared a national holiday binding in all states and each state decides its own legal holidays.

George Washington was born in Virginia on February 11, 1731, according to the then-used Julian calendar. In 1752, however, Britain and all its colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar which moved Washington's birthday a year and 11 days to February 22, 1732.

Americans celebrated Washington's Birthday long before Congress declared it a federal holiday. The centennial of his birth prompted festivities nationally and Congress established a Joint Committee to arrange for the occasion.

Washington's Birthday, however, did not become a legal holiday until January 31, 1879 when Congress added February 22nd to the list of holidays to be observed by federal employees in the District of Columbia.

Washington's Birthday was celebrated on February 22nd until well into the 20th Century. However, in 1968 Congress passed the Monday Holiday Law to "provide uniform annual observances of certain legal public holidays on Mondays." By creating more 3-day weekends, Congress hoped to "bring substantial benefits to both the spiritual and economic life of the Nation."

One of the provisions of this act changed the observance of Washington's Birthday from February 22nd to the third Monday in February. Ironically, this guaranteed that the holiday would never be celebrated on Washington's actual birthday, as the third Monday in February cannot fall any later than February 21.

Contrary to popular belief, neither Congress nor the President has ever stipulated that the name of the holiday observed as Washington's Birthday be changed to "President's Day."
