Our Lectionary readings today invite us to consider both the human tendency to build boundaries between people, and God’s tendency to cross and even to break these boundaries. Isai-ah and Paul speak of God’s ongoing desire to bring all of humani-ty under divine care. The scene in Matthew’s Gospel alludes to the long-standing distrust between foreigners and the Jewish peo-ple. Though Jesus initially resists, he then celebrates the faith of the Canaanite woman and heals her daughter. Those who are giv-en the gift of faith can be tempted to believe that God is present only to them, implicitly creating barriers against others. But the gift of faith is meant to serve God’s larger purpose, so that every-one might be united with God. By his act of healing, Jesus breaks the boundary between Jew and Gentile, and invites both to be a part of God’s people.

Matthew opens the scene in today’s Gospel by setting up a con-flict. Unlike the parallel story in Mark (7:24), the woman is de-scribed as “a Canaanite.” This label serves to evoke the ancient animosity between Jews and other peoples in the region. The woman, who is never named, begs for help for her daughter. The disciples are actively dismissive of her, as a woman and a foreign-er, and deem her to be unworthy of their attention. The text sug-gests that Jesus initially sided with the disciples. But then he rec-ognized the strength of her faith. Many women, foreigners, or marginalized persons might identify with this woman’s story. Sometimes faith means standing fast, in care for others or in fidelity to truth, even when it seems that no one supports you. Somehow, the woman recognized God’s power and God’s care within Jesus. And Jesus recognized that God was active within her, manifested in her commitment to her daughter. Jesus saw his Father’s larger horizon of care for everyone, Jew and Gentile, within this faith-filled woman.

Our relationships often need reconciling and healing. While it is easy to say, it is often difficult to achieve. Sometimes, reconciling requires that we take down the barriers that are sources of divi-sion, remove our prejudices, look beyond differences, and see the "sameness" that connects us one to another. Of course, each party has to be willing to do this in order for healing to occur. Our Gos-pel shows us the healing that can occur when both parties are willing participants.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK

Matthew 15:21-28 What do you think most impressed Jesus about the Canaanite woman? Isaiah 56:1, 6-7 According to Isaiah, "observe what is right, do what is just" is the Lord's expectation for ALL people. How do you measure up to this divine code of conduct? Romans 11:13-15, 29-32 In Romans 9-11, Paul wrestles with the Jewish rejection of Jesus as the Messiah. In today's reading, how does Paul deter-mine that this rejection ("disobedience") actually helps the Gentiles?

An Invitation from the Lay Pastoral Ministry Institute (LPMI) People often ask how they might grow in their faith. The LPMI of the Diocese of St. Petersburg was founded in 1997. It is a four-year program: an informal year of discernment and three years of formal academic training and spiritual growth. The initial segment, the Year of Discernment, consists of eight Sat-urday sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The classes meet at Christ the King Parish (821 S. Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa). Clas-ses begin on September 12, 2020 and continue once monthly through April 2021. Through an integrated process of education and ongoing faith formation, we provide an opportunity for Catholics across the Diocese to grow spiritually, intellectually, and pastorally. Many of our St. Paul parishioners have complet-ed this program in past years. The registration form and pro-gram information can be found on the LPMI website at: www.dosp.org/lpmi. You may also email [email protected] or call 727.344.1611, ext. 5458. Registrations are due in the LPMI office no later than September 9, 2020.

“Absolute truth must be unchangeable!”—Pope St. Pius X

Music Ministry The last several months have been unprecedented for all of us in so many ways. Our daily lives have been turned upside down due to the coronavirus, and our music ministry, too, has been affected. As soon as we entered the period of quarantine, all of our music ministries were sus-pended. Since the Third Sunday of Lent (March 15), we have been celebrating Mass without choirs, cantors, or instrumental-ists. I’ve been leading the music alone, as part of our live stream and now as we begin having public gatherings for Sun-day Mass, I will continue leading the music by myself for the time being. I am grateful for all those who participate in our music ministry, and I am disappointed that we have had to cut our time short this season due to COVID-19. I hope that all who have been faithful members of music ministry for so many years will rejoin when our programs are able to safely resume. So when we will have cantors and choirs back for Sunday Mass? The answer right now, the best I can say is I don’t know. Most of the guidelines that the Church is adhering to right now, strongly discourage choirs. Vigorous singing contrib-utes 6x the amount of aerosol particles in the air, which can very easily spread virus. I’m hopeful as we successfully return to public Mass on Sunday, I can use the cantors and instrumen-talists along with myself to lead music. When we do this, we will do so observing social distancing and other precautions. So we will wait and see, and pray for the best as we resume Sunday Mass. May God bless you and keep you safe.

Sunday Gospel Reflection by Bishop Parkes 20th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Lord, Give Us Grace

As people in a society that judges others by looks, social status, money and much more, it’s notable that in the Gospel of Matthew this weekend, we find Jesus healing a Canaanite woman. The many stories of Jesus’ encounters with people are often with those who many would judge to be on the fringes of society, sinners, outcasts, criminals, foreigners, and even corrupt government and temple officials. He does this to challenge the authority of the day, and to create a new way of thinking and en-countering others.

Canaanites were pagans for the most part. Yet, this woman cries out, “Lord, Son of David, help me”. She recognizes the divinity of Christ and addresses Him as such. She wanted nothing more than to free her daughter from torment from a demon. Jesus took the opportunity to show that His saving works were not only for the Jews, but for all people regardless of their nationality, belief, or unbelief. The woman showed faith, earnestly and unceasingly praying, and Jesus answered her prayer. He said to her, “O woman, great is your faith, let it be done for you as you wish,” and her daughter was healed.

Let this serve as a lesson for us that unceasing and persistent prayer is powerful and is answered. It may not be the answer we want, but we trust that it is the will of God. Today more than ever our families, our churches, our nation and our world need prayer…prayers of healing, prayers for peace, prayers for love of our fellow man regardless of skin color, nationality, politics, faith, or past action. Today we pray, “Lord give us the grace to open our hearts to bring healing and compassion to all”.

St. Vincent de Paul would like to thank all the young ladies and gentlemen from the youth groups at church for volunteering at our food pantry this summer. You helped unload delivery trucks, assist-

ed in sorting and storing the food delivered, moved boxes of meat from the walk- in freezer to the pantry, helped our clients out to their cars with the carts of food. You did all this in the extreme heat we are having this summer.

SVDP pantry volunteers extend our most sincere gratitude and apprecia-tion for all the hard work you have done. Hopefully you have seen peo-ple that are deprived of the basic need of food and realized how your work this summer has helped to provide that need for them. Best wish-es and best of luck in your upcoming school year. In the future, we hope you will think about becoming a SVDP member. Being of service to Our Lord’s poor is very rewarding.

With the young adults going back to school, we are now in need of a few strong men that can assist St Vincent De Paul on Wednesdays, Thurs-days, and Fridays. We get deliveries on Wednesday from Feeding Tampa Bay and Thursday we get delivery from Volunteer Way (our USDA food) and Fridays we get Target. On Wednesday we need help from 11:00 – 1:00. On Thursday and Friday’s, we provide food to our clients and need help from 8:30 to 12:00. If you can lift and carry approximately 30 to 50 lbs. and donate a few hours on those days, your help would be most appreciated. You can contact me at:

If any of these apply, RCIA is just what you need! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is the process for initi-ating adults into the Sacramental Life of the Catholic Church. It is a process designed for adults who have never been bap-tized or who have been baptized in other Christian faiths who are seeking full communion with the Catholic Church. The process includes four periods, three major rites:

1. Pre-Catechumenate (Inquiry Process) 2. Catechumenate 3. Full Initiation 4. Mystagogy (Action)

Other rituals also mark a person’s journey toward faith and full initiation into the Catholic Church.

RCIA is Not just for those who want to be Cathol ic . This program is a powerful way to enter into a new lever of learning the True Richness and Teachings of the Catholic Church. If you are already practicing or want to return back to restore your Catholic Faith, the RCIA process can be a great way to restart the fire of the Holy Spirt in your heart. The full-ness of Life comes through faith. The relationship you have with your heavenly Father, His Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirt is through faith and is given as a free gift from God for those who choose to follow.

If today you hear the voice of GOD, harden not your hearts!

Please Call!

“Inquiry” is a period of spiritual discovery to help an individual understand that the Catholic Faith is a life-long pursuit to build a

strong relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

We are excited to meet with you and discuss your journey. Please call or email Kathy and Deacon Frank DeSanto

MAKING A SPIRITUAL COMMUNION BY FATHER RON AUBIN

If for whatever reason, you are not able to attend Mass and receive Jesus in Holy Communion, then I encourage you to make a spiritual communion, or better yet, make your entire day a spiritual communion with Jesus. There are several web sites, listed below, that explain how to do just that. But my favorite prayer for maintaining a spiritu-al communion with Jesus is the Prayer of Saint Patrick, also known as the Breastplate of Saint Patrick: https://www.ourcatholicprayers.com/st-atricksbreastplate.html I’ve adapted this prayer to suit my own spiritual needs and my version goes something like this:

Christ be with me, within in me, before me, behind me, beneath me, above me.

Christ be on my right, and on my left. Christ be in my heart, in my mind, in my soul, and in every fiber of my

being. Christ be in my thoughts, in my words, and in my actions.

Christ be in my eyes (what I see), my ears (what I hear), on my lips (what I say),

in my hands (what I do) and in my feet (where I go). Christ be in my sleeping, in my waking, and in all my doing.

I love Jesus, be with me today, that I might be with you forever.

5th Annual

Join Living Well Women's Bible Study as we do

Biblical Women in Crisis - Portraits of Faith and Trust.

This session will offer an Online

ZOOM meeting and an In person session in Immaculata Hall.

All sessions start Monday, September 14, 10am to 12pm.

Please see our website for more details. https://ladyrosary.org/livingwell

Space is limited. There will be training material available for those who are new to Zoom.

We have all faced times of crisis. The key is to respond with faith and trust in the Lord. And who better to learn from than the heroines of the Bible? We will look at six different situa-tions in which biblical women are caught up in difficult, sur-prising, or uncertain situations. The choices they make to

face or embrace those situations are models for us when we are confronted with such events in our own lives. Among the women studied are Hannah, Naomi and Ruth, Martha,

and Jesus' mother, Mary.

Annual Pastoral Appeal 2020 Goal: $312,206

If you are paying attention here, you will no-tice our goal dropped. The Diocese gave a 15% credit to all parishes because of the

Pandemic. The Diocese was able to do this because they cut staff hours and salaries.

Pledged: $ 266,303 85.30% Paid: $ 221,934 71.09%

531 Participating families 3,282 Registered, active families

You can make APA donations through our web site: www.ladyrosary.org/give.

We understand this will be a most distressing time for all families. However we are still called to support the work of our parish and Diocese. So we continue to ask all those who are able to financially support either our Annual Pastoral Appeal or parish offertory, please do so. The need is great.

Saint Michael’s Ministry

We are hoping to reopen our ministry this Fall. We need help for Young Disciples, Edge, and Life Teen. If you have been involved and would like to come back in September, or if you are new and would like to help in some capacity, please send an email to [email protected] or call the office (813) 949-4565. We need volunteers for our SAT (Safety helpers) SRT (Law enforcement and military background) and MRT (Medical and nursing background) to assist with keeping the children on campus safe while they learn about their faith.

2020 Diaconate Discernment Sessions – Beginning this September, our diocesan Diaconate Office will offer a series of discernment sessions for those men who are con-sidering a calling to ministry as a permanent deacon. These ses-sions are required preparation for, and an integral part of, the application and evaluation process which will occur during the first half of the following year. Before participating in the dis-cernment sessions, inquirers will meet with the director of the program to learn about the discernment process, the requirements of the formation program, and the ministry of the deacon. Pas-tors, if you have men in your parish who you believe may have a calling to service as a deacon, please ask them to contact Sue Huertas in the Diaconate Office: (727) 341-6826 or by email: [email protected]. A letter will also be sent to all pastors by mail later this year.

It has been a rocky road we’ve all traveled these past months. However, Our Lady of the Rosary is blessed with many very generous parishioners. We truly thank all those who gave above and beyond their normal offertories—and there were many of you who gave an extra $1,000 2,000 even $10,000 to help us. Fr Ron was able to bring most staff back because of your generous response and we thank you. All our bills can be paid and we are able to maintain a high level of cleanliness and sanitation that these times demand. We don’t know what the future will bring, but we know we will get through it with you and Our Lord Jesus! Thank you once again for your generous support of Stewardship at OLOR!
