February the 27th of this year in the city of Stettin (400.000 inhab), important and very active harbor of Poland, has been consecrated a new St Nicholas Parish. After some years of restru-cturation the Church was brought back to its former beauty. The occasion for the invitation of the Archbishop of Bari came in the year 2007 when was programmed the inauguration of Stettin’s Academic Year of the Theological Faculty. The Archbishop of Bari was invited as Chancellor of the Apulian Theological Faculty. In that context, keeping into account the city of the Archbishop, the devotion of St Nicholas in Poland, and the future inauguration of the local St Nicholas’ Parish, the Parish Priest asked for a little of St Nicholas’ Sacred Manna. Once back in Bari, the Archbishop asked to the Rector, Fr Lorenzo Lorusso, to send the sacred Manna to that Polish Church. With this double link (the Theological Faculty and St Nicholas), Stettin /Kamien’s Archbishop, Andrzej Dzięga, invited officially our Archbishop and the Basilica’s Rector to participate in the inauguration of the new St Nicholas’ Parish in Stettin. Given that the church is dedicated to our Saint, it is easy to imagine how the Archbishop and the Rector were welcomed.

Our Saint’s cult in Stettin (Szczecin) is very ancient. It goes back to the beginning of XIIIth century, when the city was one of the most commercially flourishing in the context of the Hanseatic League. In the market place was erected a church dedicated to the patron Saint of sailors and merchants. Like other catholic churches this one too had to suffer the persecutions of Protestant Reformers when Germany had a strong influence on these lands. Finally in 1811 was almost destroyed by a fire. After few years it was demolished to leave place to the New Market, and it was built anew nearby according the baroque style prevailing at that time in Stettin.

Obviously, under communist domination the church underwent a decadence. But, as soon as returned freedom, faithful restructured and brought it back to the former beauty.

Besides this church, in Stettin’s Archdiocese there are two other St Nicholas’ parishes dedicated to our Saint, in Bodzęcin (Goleniów) and Wolin.

The former goes back to the XIV century in a gothic style, with a neo-renaissance tower (1905). The visitor is surprised by the beautiful large stained glass windows in the central apse.

St Nicholas’ church in Wolin is characterized by the imposing structure of the churches of the Hanseatic League (see St Nicholas’ ruins in Wisby, Gotland). It is mentioned in 1288 as depending upon the local Cistercian monastery. During the 2nd world war it was destroyed and abandoned.

Only in 1998 reconstruction works started, and in 2003 were over.

The Presbytery has two large vertical stained glass windows.

Spurred on by St Nicholas’ devotion, Wolin’s parish priest is the prelate Jan Uberman, who had the idea of showing on his chasuble a beautiful image of our Saint.

In Stettin the Catholic St Nicholas parish priest is in good relationship with his Orthodox colleague, who, after participating in the celebration, had a conversation with the Barian guests.

Although there is a certain decline of St Nicholas’ cult in Poland, if you enter and navigate in Internet you could see that a great number of St Nicholas’ parish churches exercise an intense pastoral activity. Among the books and reviews dedicated to him worthy of mention are the following:

K. Kaczmarek. Primary text

concerning the list of

churches, chapels, locali-

ties, altars and pictures of

St Nicholas in Poland.

In these last decades in Poland various books and reviews dealing with our Saint were published. The best I had in my hands are those of S. Longosz and K. Kaczmarek. These few lines are based on their texts (and I thank my friend Monika Werner Paśniczek for the translation of some passages of their books).

To establish the real situation today it is very difficult. As correctly observes Konrad Kaczmarek, the question goes not only about the list of churches (active communities or abandoned buildings), but also about the great variety of cult objects, statues, pictures, relics and reliquaries, chasubles, seals, stained glass windows and so on.

Often the rising of the cult in a parish gave birth to a brotherhood, that was at the origin of flags, processional icons (that could be seen from both sides), and other handcrafts having the purpose to spur the cult of our Saint. About the festivities and local customs in the Cracow area is useful to read Adam Chmiel’s essay “Szkice Krakowskie”.

Scholars do not completely agree about the introduction of St Nicholas’ cult in Poland. Karl Meisen, in his Nikolauskult und Nikolausbrauch im Abendlande, correctly deals with the spreading from the West through the commercial roads.

On the other hand Boris A. Uspenskij, in his The cult of St Nicholas in Rutenia, pointed out the East as equally important. That’s why, in spite of several perplexities, it can be affirmed that the cult in Poland was the result of the encounter of both cultures, the western and the eastern one.

A considerable number of preserved manuscripts give us the possibility to read the ancient prayers and liturgies of our Saint. Slowly entered in Poland the German customs as well, like the link of our Saint to the children world. But it has to be recognized that with the catholic introduction of many local Saints, St Nicholas’ cult started to decrease.

However, even today, if you enter Internet

You could become aware of the richness of the devotion toward St Nicholas. You can learn so many thoughts, feelings, prayers and thanksgivings. You will be surprised meeting so many and interesting churches, chapels, altars, sculptures, pictures, reliquaries, seals, chasubles, processional icons. Generally the Saint appears to persons spiritually or materially in need, and often in the gesture of protecting children.

St Nicholas’ cult in Poland, although reduced in comparison with the Middle Age, is even today very alive. According to S. Longosz, there are in Poland 367 churches dedicated to him (326 Roman Catholic, 33 Orthodox, 10 Greek-Catholic). Very often are Medieval Churches of the XII-XV centuries.

But there are modern churches dedicated to him too. The dioceses with more St Nicholas’ churches are the following:

The diocese of Gniezno – 27, of Poznań – 20, of Wrocław (Breslavia) – 16, of Toruń - 14 of Kielce – 14. With less churches dedicated to St Nicholas are the dioceses of the Eastern Poland: dioceses of Białystok, Drohiczyn and Łomża – 0, of Ełk – 1, of Zamość / Lubaczów – 4, of Lublin – 5, of Siedlce - 6. Poland: diocese of Przmyśl – 14, of Rzeszów – 9 (Brzeziny, Lubla, Łężyny, Niwiska, Połomia with a very beautiful triptych of St Nicholas, Przybyszówka), of Tarnów – 13, of Cracow – 10, of Bielsk / Żywiec – 4. These churches are usually near the most important commercial routs of the Middle Age, being St Nicholas the patron Saint of commercial activities.

Among the sanctuaries today attended by many faithful has to be mentioned the Saint’s church in Pierściec, diocese of bielsko – żywiecka (Bielsk / Żywiec), about 10 km to the north of Skoczów, near the train road Katowice – Wisła. The parish church of St Nicholas, writes Andrzej Datko, is one of the most renowned of the diocese. Object of popular cult is the image of St Nicholas and his relics. Part of these was brought from Bari by the cardinal Bolesław Kominek in the year 1963. The statue is in Pierściec since the beginning of the XV century and from that moment on has been always venerated and so it is today. Its origin is linked to two main events that the tradition has transmitted: the image appeared shining and the fact that through the fire of 1616 came out miraculously with no damage. Zofia Kossak has narrated these legends in her “Legend of St Nicholas of Pierścieć”, published in 1938. Church authorities never issued a decree about the institution of this St Nicholas’ Sanctuary, but the title has been universally used, even by bishops who come to Pierściec as pilgrims. The importance of this cult is confirmed by the custom, 200 years old, of dressing St Nicholas figure in pontifical vestments in the colors corresponding to the liturgical period. The first vestment was donated by a forester of Pierściec as an ex voto for the healing of a child.

The Sanctuary is attended by people of the dioceses of Bielsk and Żywiec, but groups of pilgrims arrive from all over Poland (about 50 buses every year). In the month of December come to Pierściec faithful from the nearby parishes. The pilgrims pray especially for the healing of loved persons, very often for children. From the beginning of the Sanctuary a particular therapeutic rite is practiced. It has its roots in an ancient tradition linked to the popular religiosity. Those who ask for a healing rub the statue of St Nicholas with handkerchiefs, with their

children little habits or with clothes of the sick people.

Pierściec

Its back in fact is shiny because of that rubbing that goes on since so many centuries.

St Nicholas’ function, during which a litany is sung and relics are kissed, is fixed to the Monday. The main festivities are organized the Sundays after the 6th of December. The third Sunday of June the finding of St Nicholas’ relics is celebrated.

Worthy of being mentioned is the parish church of the Holy Virgin Mary in Bielsk Podlaski (diocese of Drohiczyn). Here a picture of the Saint is venerated since 200 years, by the many faithful who come for the celebration of the 6th of December. Here it is possible to give Mass-offerings for domestic animals during which a special blessing is given in the name of St Nicholas.

THE 400 ST NICHOLAS’ CHURCHES

IN POLAND

This list is a provisional one because the consequences of the communist domination should be more closely verified, as well as the changing of diocese in these last four decades. In spite of this, I think that it is useful to have an idea of the spreading of St Nicholas’ churches in Poland from the Middle Age till today. My main source have been the lists sent in 1970 by the parish priest of St Nicholas’ church in Krzywiń (row. Kościan), Jan Gierliński (for the Roman Catholic churches). Important is Konrad Kaczmarek Z dziejów kultu Św. Mikołaja w Polsce, Leszno 1993, although it is to be consulted carefully, to avoid considering as a church what is only a chapel or an altar inside another church. Obviously, I have taken into account the Internet informations, especially the Carol Myers’ St Nicholas Center Gazetteer (more complete for the no-Roman Catholic churches). I ask the readers to forgive me if they shall find mistakes with letters not included in the English alphabet.
