Wolves Weekly Update for the Week of January 12, 2015
The Lake Washington School District does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, gender, marital status, creed, religion, honorably discharged veteran, military status, sexual orientation including gender expression or identity, the presence of any sensory, mental or physical disability, or the use of a trained guide dog or service animal by a person with a disability, in its programs and activities and provides equal access to the Boy Scouts and other designated youth groups.
We hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable winter break and has returned rested and ready for our final push through the end of first semester! With finals around the corner we want to remind students and families to practice healthy and effective techniques when preparing for finals: • Focused study sessions spaced out over time are much more effective (and healthy) than drawn-out cram sessions. • Research found the practice tests (including flash cards) were very effective at increasing retention, while common
practices like re-reading and highlighting were not. (http://ow.ly/H58zo) • Study “distinct but related skills or concepts in one sitting, rather than focusing intensely on a single thing.”
(http://ow.ly/H5aDh) • “Instead of sticking to one study location, simply alternating the room where a person studies improves retention.”
(http://ow.ly/H5aDh) • "Learning takes place over time—real learning doesn’t usually occur in one-time events.” (http://ow.ly/H59K5) Getting enough sleep and exercise is critical not only for health but also consolidating memories and increasing retention. If you have questions or need support do not hesitate to reach out to your teachers, both in class, during before- and after-school tutorial time, and during STP on Thursdays. Last, make sure to have some fun and downtime with family and friends. School is very important and so is time to connect, refresh, and enjoy your friends and family. Do YOU look different than you did in elementary school or middle school? We would LOVE to have you in the yearbook! Please send photos from elementary or middle school to [email protected] or upload it using the Replay It app! In preparation for finals, the World Language Department will be offering an Evening Help Session for Spanish on Wednesday, January 14 from 6-8 pm in E212. All Spanish students of all levels are welcome! This is an informal drop-in session. Students may come when they want and leave when they get their questions answered. They do not need to be a student of the teacher running the Help Session to attend. Please have your students check with their teachers or Haiku for more information. WOLF OF THE MONTH Wolf of the Month has been a tradition at EHS, recognizing excellence in students. This may include excellence in academics, effort, and citizenship. Most awards are for academic classes, athletics, or clubs. However, we have some additional awards for leadership (Leader of the Pack), school spirit (Spirit Wolf), Community Service, and Activities. Every month students are nominated per category by their teachers. Next, photos are ordered for each nominee and displayed in the Commons area. Additionally, students receive a special recognition certificate in their Homerooms. Some homeowner’s policy may offer coverage and some may offer this coverage if a rider is acquired. In addition, Lake Washington School District has arranged for an insurance option for families wishing to purchase a specific additional insurance to cover their student’s laptop. This insurance can be purchased from Worth Insurance Group. The premium is $52.00 per year and covers accidental damage and theft (police report required). The deductible in this policy is $0. This insurance can be acquired directly by accessing http://my.worthavegroup.com/lakewashington. The company also offers coverage for other personal technology systems. If you choose not to purchase the optional insurance or do not otherwise have coverage, you will be responsible for fees for damaged or lost / stolen equipment, as defined in the laptop handbook above on page 6. Parents can purchase insurance through Worth Insurance Group any time and it lasts for one year. Be sure when insuring your student’s laptop with any company to GIVE THE COMPANY THE LAPTOP SERIAL NUMBER, and not the district barcode. The school district barcode is on a while label and beings with XLWSD. That number is not recognized by any insurance company so be sure you give them the serial number. Most of the laptop serial numbers are in sort of grey lettering on the bottom of the machine. If you need assistance figuring out the right number please contact anyone who is a member of the EHS Library staff (425) 936-1506. Feeling Confused - Come to Math Lab!! It meets every Tuesday from 5-7 in room C-224and is sponsored by EHS PTSA. Mrs. Skiba and/or Ms. Everson will help make it all clear. All levels are welcome including AP and UW and it’s FREE!! REMINDER: Be sure to check the Tandem calendar on the Lake Washington School District home page

After returning from the tournament the team suffered consecutive road losses at Woodinville and Newport. The Wolves were led in the Woodinville game by Jordan Lester with 15 points and Blue Thomas who added 9 points. Against Newport, Jordan Lester had 12 points and Ben Davidson contributed with 10 points. The boys are back in action Friday with a home game against rival Redmond High School at 8:00 pm. C-Team The Freshman Boy's Basketball team has put together a couple solid victories this week. First win was 8 point win against a physical Newport squad! A lot of energy spurred the defense to get stops that created points down the stretch. On Wednesday night the boy's got another win over rival Redmond by 3. The boy's were up 1 at half, went down 10 in the 3rd due to some hot shooting by Redmond, then battled back by getting stops and converting at our end. The TEAM is growing with each game! Got a game on Monday the 12 vs Inglemoor...should be a good one. Varsity Girls’ Basketball The lady wolves came back from break to take on Woodinville last Saturday. Despite a 3rd quarter surge the wolves fell short 50-29. Gina Marxen lead the wolves with 8 pts and rebounds. The wolves bounced back on Wednesday night with a win over Newport 61-35. It was a true team win with great defensive effort and balanced scoring. Ellie Woerner lead the way with 23 points and 8 rebounds. Sarah priestly had 15 rebounds and Gina Marxen contributed 6 boards and 5 steals. Boys’ Swim & Dive The Eastlake Boys Swim & Dive Team got another win yesterday, beating Inglemoor 106 - 80. Our divers swept the varsity event - Bryce Bussiere, Rylan Gordon and Cory Flynn. Owen Barlclay, Campbell Bates, Brady Stahl, Brendan Parker, Jeremy Brewer, Gordon Silva and Ryan Hewitt all made significant drops in their 50 freestyle times, best times of the season. Senior Captain Jackson Berman qualified for state in the 100 fly, his 3rd state time this year. Connor McCabe, new district qualifier in the 50 Free. What makes Fear Free Practice Tests a great college prep tool?
Tests are conducted at Eastlake by Princeton Review, a leader in the standardized test prep industry.
Students get to experience a full-length, timed practice test in an environment very similar to actual test conditions. This helps them become familiar with the test format and receive honest feedback on how well they are doing. It also helps them build up their test endurance and time management skills to endure a 3-1/2 to 4-hour long test.
A representative from Princeton Review will hold a Scores Back Session at Eastlake to go over student results. These sessions help students interpret their score report and learn valuable strategies for improving scores on the real tests.
Unlike official SAT and ACT tests, these test results are given directly to the student and not sent out to colleges so students can get confidential feedback on how they're doing. That's the fear free part!
Both the SAT and ACT tests are offered so students can try both test formats and decide which one best suits them.

How Do I Find Scholarships?
1. The Internet
Use many online scholarship databases as long as they are free. TheWashboard.org is a great place to start as
it connects Washington students with Washington scholarship providers whether you’ll be attending in state
or out of state.
Also go to http://www.college-scholarships.com/free_scholarship_searches.htm which contains links to more
than 50 free, online scholarship search sites listing thousands of scholarships. Just visit the sites which seem
most appropriate for you and find the scholarships for which you are a good match.
2. Purchase a Scholarship Book
Many scholarships are not online! Purchase a book such as The Ultimate Scholarship Book 2014 by Gen and
Kelly Tanabe. Use the index to identify scholarships that fit you.
3. Check for Local Scholarships
Look at the list of local scholarships posted in the Career Center and on the Haiku page under “Extras”. Also
check your employer, parent’s employers, and local businesses. Please be aware that there are scholarships
scams! Do not ever pay to apply for a scholarship! Contact Lori Horton in the Career Center if you have any
questions regarding scholarship opportunities ([email protected]).
