Prepare your mind and heart for next Sunday’s Eucharistic Celebration with this reflection

December 29, 2019 • Feast of the Holy Family • Year A

A Holy, Human Family This Week’s Readings at Mass ▶ Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14 - Duties toward parents ▶ Colossians 3:12-21 - The practice of virtues ▶ Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23 - The flight to Egypt

With the story of Jesus’ birth still fresh in our minds on this first Sunday after Christmas, the church uses the opportunity to celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family with all of the readings focused on families. The Gospel readings are from Matthew this year, so the focus this week is on Jesus’ earthly father, Joseph. (When we read from the Gospel of Luke, the focus is on his mother, Mary.)

If the story of Jesus’ birth warmed our hearts with its tale of the star over Bethlehem and the magi who traveled long distances to worship and bring him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, the story today takes a terrible turn. Mary and Joseph have no time to savor his birth or let the wonder of the magi’s visit sink in because suddenly their baby’s life is in danger. Like millions of refugees throughout history, they must flee their home country on short notice with just a vague sense of a distant destination. Because they trust the guidance the angel gave Joseph in a dream, they save their son’s life.

Tragically, however, many families lost sons to Herod’s cruelty when he ordered all baby boys killed in his efforts to kill Jesus. (These verses are omitted from the Gospel passage today.) So the Feast of the Holy Family is not “The Feast of the Perfect Family in a Perfect World.” The Church celebrates this family today because of Mary and Joseph’s willingness to say “yes” to raising God’s son, even though it brought them great fear, anxiety, uncertainty, and even anguish because of the evil one man, Herod, wreaked on so many families. They were a holy family, but they did not escape any challenges of being a human family.

Questions of the Week • Does it change anything for you to think about Jesus’ family in terms of being a

refugee family like so many millions today and throughout history? How so? • Mary and Joseph changed course

unexpectedly when they needed to in order to protect Jesus’ life. When have you had to change direction suddenly? Can you see the hand of God at work in that change??

Con la historia del nacimiento de Jesús todavía fresca en nuestras mentes, este primer domingo después de Navidad, la Iglesia aprovecha la oportunidad para celebrar la Fiesta de la Sagrada Familia con todas las lecturas centradas en la familia. Las lecturas del Evangelio son de Mateo este año, por lo que el enfoque de esta semana está en el padre terrenal de Jesús, José. (Cuando leemos del Evangelio de Lucas, el enfoque está en su madre, María).

Si la historia del nacimiento de Jesús calentara nuestros corazones con su historia de la estrella sobre Belén y los magos que viajaron largas distancias para adorar y traerle regalos de oro, incienso y mirra, la historia de hoy da un giro terrible. María y José no tienen tiempo para saborear su nacimiento o dejar que la maravilla de la visita de los magos se hunda porque de repente la vida de su bebé está en peligro. Al igual que millones de refugiados a lo largo de la historia, deben huir de su país de origen a corto plazo con solo una vaga sensación de un destino lejano. Como confían en la guía que el ángel le dio a José en un sueño, salvan la vida de su hijo.

Trágicamente, sin embargo, muchas familias perdieron hijos por la crueldad de Herodes cuando ordenó que mataran a todos los bebés varones en su empeño por matar a Jesús. RISKY BUSINESS Matthew’s Gospel today tells us Joseph was betrothed to Mary. Unlike engagement, betrothal was a binding contract. The couple might wait for a year before beginning married life. Sexual activity during the betrothal was frowned upon. If the bride became pregnant by another man, her groom could denounce her, and she would be stoned to death. The alternative was quiet divorce. This would have saved Joseph from humiliation, but would have done nothing to protect Mary. God spoke in Joseph’s dream and told him to take Mary as his wife. God named her child Jesus—the one who saves. Joseph took a risk and said “Yes” to God, without regard for the outcome. Not all women have a “just man” like Joseph to stand by them during pregnancy and birth, or the resources to cope with single motherhood or a child with disabilities. Take a risk like Joseph and commit to offering help.

UNA SITUACIÓN ARRIESGADA El Evangelio de Mateo nos dice hoy que José estaba desposado con María. A diferencia del compromiso, los esponsales tenían toda la validez de un contrato. La pareja podía esperar hasta un año antes de comenzar su vida matrimonial. La actividad sexual durante este período no se veía bien. Si la novia quedaba encinta por otro hombre, el novio podía denunciarla y a ella la podían matar a pedradas. La alternativa era un divorcio callado. Esto le hubiera evitado una humillación a José, pero en nada hubiera protegido a María. Dios le habló a José en sueños y le dijo que recibiera a María como esposa. Al hijo de María Dios le puso por nombre Jesús, que quiere decir “Dios salva”. José se arriesgó al decirle “sí” a Dios, sin considerar las consecuencias. No todas las mujeres tienen un “hombre justo” como José que permanezca junto a ellas durante el embarazo y a la hora de dar a luz, ni tampoco tienen los recursos para hacerle frente a una maternidad siendo solteras o a un niño con discapacidades. Arriésgate como José y comprométete a prestar alguna ayuda.

Renueve mi iglesia: Divina Providencia y esperando en el Espíritu Santo Nuestro Equipo de Comentarios y Discernimiento de Agrupación se presentó al Comité Ejecutivo de la Comisión Renueva Mi Iglesia la semana pasada. Fue una muy buena discusión sobre las realidades locales de nuestras parroquias y comunidades.
