    4.1 Program General Information

    As an open university, Athabasca University will accept applicationto become a student from any individual who is 16 years of age orolder.

    Students complete the program regulations in effect at the timeof their enrolment. For degree programs with enrolmentrequirements, students will follow the regulations in effect uponnotification of acceptance into the degree.

    Students may not enrol in an AU undergraduate degree programwhile they are enrolled in a degree program at another post-secondary institution. Those students may take courses asunclassified (non-program/visiting) students until they have eithercompleted or withdrawn from the other program.

    4.1.2 Student Resources

    Mapping Your FutureMastering Exam Anxiety

    4.1.2.1 Program Planning

    If you have not completed any post-secondary courses before, wesuggest you begin by selecting a preparatory (100 level) or junior(200 level) course in your degree area. Check carefully to ensure100-level courses meet your program requirements.

    Select a course that includes topics that interest you, and considerall of the requirements within your specific degree or certificateprogram. Some of our undergraduate programs, such as theBachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Commerce degree, havespecific program requirements.

    Most programs contain a number of core courses and requiredelective courses. Select courses that are designated as core orrequired electives first. These junior-level courses will helpprovide you with the information base you will need tosuccessfully complete senior (300/400) level courses.

    4.1.3 Program Undergraduate Degree GPA andGraduation with Distinction or GreatDistinction

    All Athabasca University students who graduate with anundergraduate degree and who have successfully completed aminimum of 24 credits at AU, are automatically considered forgraduation with distinction or great distinction recognition. Allcompleted AU courses taken as part of the undergraduate degreeprogram in which the student is registered will be used in theprogram GPA calculation including unsuccessful course attempts.

    For courses that are repeated, the highest grade achieved will beused in the program GPA calculation.

    Courses excluded from the GPA calculation are:

    Transfer courses (courses for which transfer credit has beenawarded)Courses using a pass/fail grading schemeCourses with a grade of W (Withdrawal) or WF (WithdrawalFailure), both without academic penaltyCourses considered extra to the degreeCredits awarded for Prior Learning Accreditation andRecognition (PLAR)Non-credit courses and courses with no grades.

    Athabasca University recognizes students who have completedstudies in both official languages: English and French. Studentswho complete a minimum of 30 credits in English and 30 creditsin French instruction as part of an AU credential (excluding Frenchas a second language and preparatory [100-level] courses) areeligible to have a notation written on their parchment andtranscript.     4.1.5 Residency Requirement

    Residency is defined as the minimum number of AthabascaUniversity credits that must be completed to fulfill a program'srequirements. In some cases, specific Athabasca Universitycourses are prescribed as part of the overall residencyrequirement for a given program.

    ADMN 404, for example, is a required course in the Bachelor ofCommerce degree and the Bachelor of Management degree, andit must be completed at AU. No transfer credit is allowed for thiscourse within the Bachelor of Commerce degree and the Bachelorof Management degree. Please review the residency charts.

    The three-year Bachelor of Arts program isa well-respected credential in Canada andthe United States. While the three-yeardegree program is a highly marketablecredential, it is not aimed at providingstudents with direct access to graduatelevel studies.     The four-year Bachelor of Arts providesstudents with a broad, flexible educationthat allows them to develop, understand,and disseminate knowledge, to thinkcritically, and to build on these abilities. Inaddition, the four-year degree fullyprepares students for most graduateprograms. Graduates of the Bachelor ofArts with a major are expected to havegained sufficient analytical and criticalthinking skills to be able to engage inindependent research in their chosenmajor. Athabasca University does not offeran Honours BA.

    Although you may change majors, a majormust be selected when you enrol in thefour-year Bachelor of Arts program. Youmay select from the following majors:Anthropology, Canadian Studies, English,French, History, Humanities, InformationSystems, Labour Studies, PoliticalEconomy, Political Science, Psychology,Sociology, and Women’s and GenderStudies.

    Students enrolled in the three-yearBachelor of Arts program who wish totransfer to the four-year Bachelor of Artsprogram must complete a newUndergraduate General Application Form.Previous education will be reassessed andstudents will be notified of the results.

    Double Majors

    Students in the Bachelor of Arts program,as either a first or second undergraduatedegree, generally have the option tocombine two majors if they wish. Studentswho undertake double majors must fulfillall requirements for both majors.Depending upon the majors chosen, thismay greatly restrict course selection(particularly in the second undergraduatedegree program) or require thecompletion of more than 120 credits.Students considering enrolling in doublemajors should consult with an AthabascaUniversity advisor for assistance inselecting their programs and courses.

    Change of Major

    You may change majors at any time. Youwill be placed in the current regulations. Ifyou wish to remain in the regulations thatwere in effect at the time of your originalenrolment, contact Admissions andEvaluations Services. Please reference theappropriate Calendar, e.g., 2002-2003regulations. To request a change of major,complete and submit a newUndergraduate General Application Form.No fees are required.

    Minors

    A student has the option of taking a minorin addition to their major.
