    Management of Project Scope

    It is part of the Definition phase. (Phase 2)

    Scope is an accurate description of the end- products ordeliverables to be expected from the project

    It describes the activities that have to be performed andidentifies the resources that will be utilized for thesuccessful completion of the project

    Scope also identifies the target outcomes, prospectivecustomers, outputs and the financial and human

    resources required for completion of the project. Scope document is prepared by the project management

    Project Scope- Definition

    The scope of a project can be divided into

    Product Scope

    Project Scope

    Product scope deals with the scope of the end product. Itdetails the functions and features of the product orservice.

    Project Scope details the work to be done to deliver theproduct or service. It describes the activities that have tobe performed and identifies the resources that will be

    utilized for the successful completion of the project.It isdocumented in the Project Overview Statement (POS) orProject Proposal.

    Project Overview Statement (POS)

    The POS documents the scope of the project.

    It is also referred as Initial Project Definition,

    Document of understanding, Project Scope

    Statement or Statement of work.

    POS is a dynamic document.

    It also enables resolution of conflicts among

    It is the purpose of the project.What will

    the project accomplish?

    S= Specific M= Measurable

    A= Assignable

    R= Reliable T= Timebound

    More detailed version of the goal

    statement. The objectives specify the

    exact boundaries of the project goal:

    POS- Success criteria

    Why is the project being taken up?

    These form the basis for judging if the project

    has succeeded in achieving its objectives

    The criteria should be tangible and measurable.

    The benefits identified in the success criteria

    often form the basis for approving the project

    Project Definition Statement (PDS)

    It is similar to POS but it is made by the

    SDO/ Project Team members only and the

    User/Client is not involved or has access

    to the PDS.

    PDS is more detailed and it is used as a

    reference during project implementation by

    Scope Verification

    It is a process that formalizes the

    acceptance of the project scope by the

    project stakeholders

    The project & product deliverables are

    reviewed to ensure they are as per

    specifications

    The project can start only after scope
