So, why is leadership so important? The following was found on the tomb of an Anglican bishop (1100A.D.) in the crypts of Westminster Abbey: “When I was young and free and my

imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world. As I grew older and wiser, I discovered the world would not change, so I shortened my sights and decided to change only my country. But, it too, seemed immovable. As I grew into my twilight years, in one last deperate attempt, I settled for changing only my family, those closest to me, but alas, they would have none of it. And now as I lie on my deathbed, I suddenly realize: If I had only changed myself first, then by example I would have changed my family. For their inspiration and encouragement, I would then have been able to better my country and, who knows, I may have even changed my world.”

The 4-H Pledge, pledges to serve our “club, community, country and world”. We do this in order to “make the best better”.

So, I challenge you that in order to continue to make the best better, we must first look within ourselves. Lead by example. Look for ways to improve your personal leadership skills. MembershipIn order to be a regular member of Cowley County 4-H, the member must be 7 by January 1, 2015. Participation forms and enrollment forms (for new families)are available at the Extension Office or from your club leader. Returning members and new members will need to complete enrollment online (ks4honline.com) AND a participation form.

Upcoming MeetingsThe Cowley County Extension Council Executive Board meets monthly and conducts the business of the Extension Office. The February meeting will be held on Thursday, February 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the Assembly Room of the Cowley County Courthouse, 311 E. 9th, Winfield.

4-H Council, Junior Leaders and Ambassadors will meet Monday, March 16th. 4-H Council will meet from 7:00 p.m.- 7:45 p.m. Junior Leaders will begin at 7:50 p.m. Ambassadors will meet at 8:30. If you were selected to represent your club at 4-H Council and find you cannot attend, please let your leaders know and find another member to serve in your place. If you are an Ambassador and cannot attend the meeting, let Jennifer Bauer know before the meeting (316-648-2186).

4-H Day InformationCowley County 4-H Day is Saturday, February 14 at the Winfield Middle School, 130 Viking Blvd.It is helpful to arrive at the Winfield Middle School at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled presentation. If the room is ahead of schedule and you would like to present early, you are welcome to do so. However, we would never force a member to present prior to their scheduled time. We ask that presenters arrive promptly and pay careful attention to time out of respect for the judges and other presenters.You will enter the Commons Area of Winfield Middle School. An information table will be

available directing you to the rooms that the performances will take place in. Results will also be posted near the information table.When you arrive at the room in which you are scheduled to present, please check in with the room monitor so that they know you are there. You are welcome and encouraged to listen to other members present. Please be courteous: Listen to the entire presentation without leaving, sit quietly and do not attempt to enter a room while someone else is presenting. Once you have completed your presentation, you are encouraged to visit with the judge. The judge may ask you questions and/or offer advice. Answer honestly and openly. They are here to give feedback and help us to improve. Be respectful of those presenting after you and quickly clean up your area before conferencing with the judge.Visit some of the presentations that 4-H’ers are giving and learn about a new project! Volunteers are offering some additional project experiences and Ambassadors will have a mini project fair.Try your hand at Consumer Judging and check out the Favorite Family Foods Show.A doodle table will be available with crayons and markers for families to doodle as they wait.Meet new people! 4-H Day is a great way to meet other families from different clubs and learn about their 4-H experience!Please be sure to provide your feedback to us! Leadership Wanted:  4-H FoodstandThe Cowley County 4-H Program Development Committee (PDC) has initiated a 4-H Foodstand Committee.  The members of the Foodstand Committee will work with the 4-H Agent to oversee the 4-H Foodstand.  Responsibilities include:  developing 4-H Foodstand policies, developing 4-H Foodstand rental agreements, hiring and working with the Foodstand manager, winterizing the Foodstand, and general maintenance.  The committee will consist of three 4-H members, one 4-H PDC member, one Junior Leader Sponsor and one Junior Leader.  For more information, or to apply, please contact the Extension Office.

Shooting Sports InformationShooting Sports practices will be as posted on the Cowley County 4-H Shooting Sports website, www.4hshootingsportscowleyks.com under the disciplines page which are 1st Sundays, Air Disciplines at 2pm, 3rd Sundays, Club Mtg at 1:30pm, Shotgun at 2pm, and Hunting Skills at 3pm, 2nd & 4th Thursdays, Archery at 6:30.  For updates, check out the Cowley County 4-H Shooting Sports facebook page.  If you need directions to practices or more info, email Austin Waite at [email protected] or call at 620-222-1982.

Wildlife Habitat Education Program 2015 WHEP (Wildlife Habitat Education Program) contest practices will begin, Tuesday, March 10th at 4:45 at the New Hope Fellowship Church, 19195 61st Rd. Winfield. 4-H Food Skate2015 Sunrise Food Skate will be Monday, February 23rd from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Winfield's Interskate 77.  All 4-H clubs are invited to attend and bring a friend who's interested in 4-H activities.  Each skater needs to bring 4 cans of food or $4.00 plus $1.00 for skate rental.  This annual event has supported the Winfield Food Pantry for 5+ years.  Sunrise 4-H greatly appreciates the huge support we receive each year in this community

service project, thank you!

Eagle Valley Raptor CenterCameron 4-H Club is hosting Nate Matthews from the Eagle Valley Raptor Center, at their next club meeting on February 9th, 7pm at C-4 school, 11945 292nd Rd Arkansas City. Eagle Valley Raptor Center specializes in native Kansas Birds of Prey. These include Eagles, Hawks, Owls, Kites, Falcons and Vultures. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Sunny Hills 4-H CampCowley County will attend 4-H Camp at Rock Springs with the Sunny Hills Camp Group June 15-18, 2015.  Campers will have the opportunity to meet 4-H members from across the state to explore the Rock Springs 4-H Center.  Activities include hiking, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding, swimming, crafts and more.  Camp is open to all youth who have completed 3rd grade through 7th grade.  4-H members are encouraged to bring a friend.  Registration for 2015 is $175 and is due May 8.  Scholarships are available through 4-H Council and can be found at http://bit.ly/1CMzyM9.

Camp Counselors Teens are needed to serve as 4-H Camp counselors with Sunny Hills Camp June 15-18.  Applicants must have completed at least their freshman year in high school, with preference given to sophomores and older.  Counselors attend training at Rock Springs June 14-15.  To apply, visit http://bit.ly/1CMzyM9.

Tractor Safety TrainingCowley County Extension will sponsor Tractor Safety Training Saturday, March 14th in Winfield, at PrairieLand Partners. Who: Individuals who are 14 or 15 years old and plan to do farm work for someone other than a parent or guardian.Individuals must take a safety course following U.S. Department of Labor requirements before you can be employed at certain hazardous farm task including the operation of tractors over 20 horsepower, combines, balers, forage harvesters, feed grinders, etc. The class will be held from 8:30am-1:00pm. Registration is $20 and is payable the day of training. Pre-registration is required. For additional information or to register, contact the Cowley County Extension Office.

Seventh Annual K-State Animal Sciences Leadership AcademyThe K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy is an intensive four day educational experience designed to enhance the leadership skills and animal science knowledge of high school students. The program is hosted by K-State Animal Sciences and Industry and sponsored by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council. The goal of this academy will be to further develop young leaders within the livestock industry and prepare them for a successful future in this field.Students will stay on campus in university housing with event staff for the duration of the event. Twenty students will be accepted for each session. The application process is open to out-of-state students.We are pleased to announce that the Livestock and Meat Industry Council will be sponsoring two K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy sessions in 2015!Sessions will be June 10-13 and June 17-20. Applications will be due April 1, 2015.

Kansas Junior Swine Producer Day Please join us February 28th for the Kansas Junior Swine Producer Day at Weber Arena, Kansas State University. This highly interactive, hands-on educational event will be a fun filled day of activities in which youth, parents, swine project leaders and adults can increase their knowledge and experience of swine production and management practices. This event was last held in 2013, where over 400 participants from 47 counties attended! All participants will receive a K-State Show Pig Guide, T-shirt, and a complimentary noon lunch. Participants with registrations after February 1 cannot be guaranteed a T-shirt.

Cowley County to Host Eastern Kansas Swine Show SeriesThe Eastern Kansas Swine Series (EKSSS) will host a two day prospect pig show at the Cowley County Fairgrounds May 23 and 24, 2015. Participate in one or both shows. The Eastern Kansas Swine Show Series began in 2003. 2015 Fair ChangesThe following changes/updates will apply to the 2015 Cowley County Fair 4-H Youth Division:Late entries will be accepted within 72 hours of the published deadline with a $30 fee/entry form .Barn 4 check-in will be held from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.Addition of rule #21 to General Rules:  “Removal of exhibits prior to published exhibit release times will result in forfeiture of ALL premium monies.”

Vet-check time form sheep and goats will be 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.Spectators will NOT be allowed in the barns during livestock check-in/weigh-in on Thursday.Swine weigh-in will begin at 5:00 p.m.Bucket Calf check-in will be held from 4:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.Livestock Exhibitor Meeting will be at 4:30 p.m.All livestock must be on the grounds by 5:30 p.m.A “Bred and Owned” class will be held during the breeding show for Beef Cattle, Sheep, Swine, Meat Goats, Dairy Cattle and Dairy Goats.  The intent of the Bred and owned division is to highlight those exhibitors who care for and own their animal(s) year-round.  The female must be in the sole ownership of the exhibitor.  An ownership affidavit for all

breeding females exhibited in the Bred and Owned class must be on file with the Cowley County Extension Office.Weight divisions will be added to Meat Goats.Breeding Does (Meat Goats) will be shown by weight.Dairy Goats will be added to the Round Robin Showmanship.Addition to sheep/goat health requirements:  “Must be free of open, actively draining wounds.”Herdsmanship will be added for Poultry and Rabbits.There will be no age limit for the Cow/Calf Class in the Beef Department.Break bucket calf classes by exhibitor age in the fairbook:  1:  7-9; Class 2:  10-13 Addition of rule #36, General Livestock:  No snaring of swine.Addition of rule #35, General Livestock:  At the discretion of the superintendents, any livestock may be used for the livestock judging contest.Rule #22, General Livestock reworded:  "All livestock will be groomed, fitted and cared for show by exhibitor.  Cooperation between exhibitors and family members in encouraged.  ABSOLUTELY no professional groomers!"Addition of  rule #37 to General Livestock:  Clean up will not begin until 11:30 p.m. Monday night, or after all base bid animals have been loaded. Rule #20, General Livestock:  “Each livestock exhibitor must clean up their exhibit area(s) by 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.  It is expected that each exhibitor is responsible for cleaning up their own area.”Add rule #38 to General Livestock:  ‘All livestock exhibits must be in place in the barns by 8:30 a.m.’Take out breeding/market entry limits and set as 4/specie.Addition to Beef Rules:  Beef exhibitors must notify superintendents by Thursday at 5:30 p.m. where their tie-outs are located.

Dog Training ClassSouth Central Kansas Kennel Club is again having Dog Training Classes. They will be held Tuesdays beginning March 3rd at the Cowley County Fairgrounds (under North Grandstand). Classes are for all ages and skill levels.4-H members who are currently enrolled in the dog project may attend free of charge. To all others, there is a $35 fee. Fiber Fans- February 64-H youth and friends are invited to to participate in hands-on activities to explore and create with textile fibers. Volunteer Mary Dunkin will have a mini-project available on Friday, February 6 from 3-5:30 p.m. The open house format allows participants ages 5 and older to participate as their schedule allows. Please allow at least 60 minutes to complete a mini-project using wool fabric (beginning sewing skills welcome!) Participants do not need to be enrolled in 4-H to participate. The free event will be held at the Cowley County Courthouse, Assembly Room. Call 620-221-5450 to RSVP.

FCS Judging UpdateYouth are invited to participate in the FCS Judging Contest during 4-H Days between 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Beginning youth can participate in a "First Timers" category to learn the basics. This is a great opportunity to accomplish a judging experience that is a requirement for some 4-H Achievement pins. Work is in progress on “reinventing” the FCS judging experience/contests.  A Senior FCS Event Committee is developing  an event to be held at Discovery Days (late May) and an Intermediate FCS Event Committee is creating an event to be held during the Kansas State Fair (September). Becky Reid is serving on the Intermediate experience committee and welcomes your ideas.  Additional volunteers will be needed to assist on the contest dates.

Incentive to Enroll in Clothing Construction and/or Fiber Arts Youth interested in clothing construction or fiber arts projects are encouraged to enroll in these projects as soon as possible. A generous donor has provided sewing supplies and fabric. We will distribute these items at "to be announced" spring project event(s) and will be e-mailing invitations to those enrolled in the project.

Walk Kansas 2015 March 15 - May 9Walk Kansas 2015 is a team-based program that will help you and others lead a healthier life by being more active, making better nutrition choices, and learning positive ways to deal with stress. How does Walk Kansas work? Co-workers, family members, friends and neighbors form teams of 6 people who will track minutes of physical activity and food choices during the 8-week challenge, March 15 - May 9, 2015.Walking isn’t the only activity that counts for Walk Kansas. Participants receive an Activity Guide that provides more information.  How do I get involved? Start a Team! Gather 6 people (including yourself) who will motivate and encourage each other, and decide who will serve as captain. Even if you don’t have enough members to make up a team, you can still participate. Register for Walk Kansas! Registration and participant materials are available to download from the links on the right. A $7 registration fee per participant is required. Registrations are due by March 12, 2014.   Walk Kansas apparel is available at an additional cost.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: If you are planning to do farm work, and it is for someone other than a parent or guardian, and you are 14 or 15 years of age, you must take a tractor safety course following the U.S. De-partment of Labor requirements before you can be employed at certain hazardous farm tasks. This includes operating a tractor over 20 horsepower.
