The Art Business Conference 2015 1

I am delighted to welcome over 165 art businesses and organisations with 300 attendees from across the UK, Europe and the USA. I would like to thank all of our speakers for their valuable contributions and for taking time in their hectic schedules to prepare for today, with a special thank you to our returning conference chair, Georgina Adam.

I would also like to thank all of this year’s sponsors and partners, and appreciate your generous support of this important new initiative for the art market.

Now in its second year, the aim of the conference is simple: to bring together art market professionals to discuss the key issues affecting the global art world, and to share insight and practical knowledge that, we hope, will prove useful for your business. During the various networking and refreshment breaks, the conference will also offer opportunities to meet new and existing contacts from different sectors of the art market. You can follow the conference live on www.tondo.is.

I hope you enjoy this year’s conference and if there are ways in which we can improve your 2016 conference experience, I would like to hear from you. We are already reviewing topics for next year’s conference, and if you have suggestions, please get in touch at [email protected].

Following Professor Roubini’s call at Davos earlier in 2015 for the art market to be regulated, this panel will explore the current laws and regulations under which the art trade already operates. Panellists will also offer their perspectives on the market today, the ongoing challenges it faces, and how to address the increasing call for greater regulation within the industry.

There will be an extended Q&A session to allow for additional contributions and questions from the audience.

4.20 – 5.20PANEL DISCUSSION: PROFESSIONAL RISK AND REPUTATION

5.20CLOSING REMARKS

Even the smallest dealings in the art market have a propensity to attract the media’s attention, and those unprepared to make use of it are bound to be abused by it. Perceptions can be damaged irreversibly when we are poorly equipped to handle scrutiny, and an awareness of reputational risk is advantageous in the art market. Every single week, the art market is discussed in newspapers, and on social media and news sites. And from eye-wateringly high auction prices to scandals over Nazi loot, there are plenty of reasons for people to take notice.

This panel brings together professionals who have worked at the heart of many of the most high-profile stories in recent years to share their experiences on professional risk and reputation.
