What happens when human communities expand into wildlife habitats?
Whose
Habitat
Is It?
A black bear visits someone’s backyard.
Real World Reading
ComprehensionGenreNonfiction Articles give
information about real
people, places, or things.
SummarizeMain Idea and DetailsA main idea is the most
important point of the
article. Details support the
main idea.
They come out of the woods when darkness falls. They
are hungry, and they are not picky eaters. Black bears are content munching on birdseed, chicken bones, or other food scraps. “It’s been going on for about three years,” says Gregg Baker, 49. He lives in Margaretville, New York, at the edge of a forest. One night he woke to the sound of banging. “I went running downstairs,” says Baker. “There was a bear on the picnic table attempting to get in the kitchen window.”
