Dear Parents and Carers

What a great week we have had, I have been so very proud of KES this week.

On Wednesday we hosted the 50th #Impact demonstration for our 6th Form stu-dents. Anything that helps to educate our young people about the fatal 4 and minimise injuries and fatalities on our roads is time well spent. Our student vol-unteers who took part in the re-enactment were very brave.

Our resilient GCSE artists have been focused for 10 hour on their exam piece’s the week, Year 7’s have shared some wonderful work with me when I have been in lessons; seeing such a positive attitude to learning has been a delight to see.

Year 6 — Mr Robinson

How will you get to school?

Now is a good time to consider how you will come to school. If you are going to cycle we would recommend you wear a helmet and have lights. A bike chain is a must to lock your bike up in our bike sheds. If you are walking I would recommend a dry run where you time yourself to get from home to school. Always remember road safety when crossing a road. Don’t talk or engage with strangers. If you are going to drop your child off please consider adding extra time as the traffic can add 10/15 minutes on your journey time.

Home to school transport We must provide free transport for children who attend their nearest or nearest catchment school, if they live more than the qualifying distance from the school, measured by the shortest available walking route. The qualifying distance is over 3 miles for all children aged 8 years and over.

Information about the allocation of school places has been passed to transport department who will contact families who would, in line with transport policy, be eligible for assistance with home to school transport. Parents will be contacted before the end of April.

Some children in Norfolk will also qualify for free travel based on certain criteria. Find out if you qualify. If you think you qualify for transport under low income grounds, medical reasons or you wish to make a discretionary application you can apply after 1 May 2019.

GOOD NEWS At KES, each year group has continued their outstanding start to this half term.

Currently uniform is outstanding following the new Principal’s drive. The academic journey at King Edward VII Academy is a long but rewarding one and, in our Principal’s eyes, this is the first step to improve our academy.

Students have once again been keen to learn and partake in the oppor-tunities that are open to them in lesson from science experiments, mak-ing shields and castles in geography to representing the academy in a Norfolk MFL spelling test. They have been polite and well mannered, with Mrs Hartshorn mentioning to me on numerous occasions about Year 7 pupils

I have observed some outstanding learning and progress taking place. Keep up the good work and continue learning! This journey will be suc-cessful.

GOOD NEWS Year 8 cricket team, lost to Wymondham by 20 runs – however Wy-mondham are a very strong team who were last year’s County winners so to be so close to winning, it was a super effort! Well done boys!

The push on uniform is ongoing, please ensure that your child’s uniform meets the expectations set out in the letter sent by Mrs Hartshorn, Prin-cipal, before the Easter holidays.

Alternatively, please check the school website. http://kesacademy.co.uk/prospective-parents-carers/uniform/

Equipment Check

Again a reminder that pupils must come well prepared for lessons with all the correct equipment. Students should bring the following in a pencil case: two pens, a pencil, a ruler, a rubber, a pencil sharpener, a compass, a protractor, a calculator and coloured pencils

Uniform – Thank you for your support with ensuring that students come to school in correct uniform. Thank you also for continuing to support the school on the Mobile Policy- Mobile phone are not to be seen or heard in school. We are already beginning to see a huge positive impact of this in lessons.

With any issues related to your child’s welfare please contact Ms Sally Nurse the Student Support Leader for Year 9 in the first instance. Her email details are [email protected].

Study Tips

Students in Year 9 are expected to start taking a greater ownership of their learning.

Discover your learning style

Most of us have a preferred way of learning. Get to know the learning style you're most comfortable with and study in the ways you learn best. Note that these styles are just a way to think about different studying tech-niques – they're not hard and fast rules that say you should only study in one way. Try each of these out and see which ways you prefer.

Auditory learners prefer to learn by listening. Try reading your notes aloud and discussing them with other people. You might like to record key points and play them back.

Visual learners prefer to learn by seeing. Try using colours in your notes and draw diagrams to help represent key points. You could try to remember some ideas as images.

Tactile/kinesthetic learners prefer to learn by doing. Try using techniques like role-playing or building models to revise key points.

Review and revise

At least once a week you should go back over the things you've studied in class. Thinking things over can help you to understand the concepts and help you remember when you need them the most.

Quiz – Get a friend or family member to quiz you on key concepts. Offer to help your friends with their work too. Quizzes are great ways to get confident about what you know and find out what you still need to learn.

Make your own study materials – Think up some practice exam questions or create your own flash cards to help you study. This way you learn it all twice: once when you make the study materials and once when you use them to revise.

Year 10—Mr Chung

Parents evening next Thursday is an important evening. In one years’ time from now students would be starting their first real exams. It isn’t about getting things right in a year, it is about getting things right now so that in a year’s time your son/daughter would get the best possible grade and have the best opportunities for the future.

For the parents evening I will be leaving with you copies of your child’s reports and their own personal statements about their progress. This will give you a reminder of where they are at, as there have been some time between their last report and the parents evening.

I also want to say a big thank you to a parent, Mrs Clark as she was able to suggest the benefit of mentioning pupils that had achieved the most achievement points based on a weekly accumulation, instead of a running total of the most achieved throughout the year. The difference this has made has been tremendous, as pupils who aren’t normally on the list have been celebrating and have been mentioning this to the parents.

I just want to take the time to congratulate Oliver Leman for doing ex-tremely well within his engineering course.

NEXT WEEK’S ASSEMBLY

I also want to say a big thank you to all the Year 10’s that listened well in my last assembly about what it takes to be a winner. My next assem-bly will be on why failure should not be an option.

GCSE exams start 13th May, that means just 4 school days to go

Don’t forget, if you have any questions about your child’s up and coming GCSE exams, our exams department have a direct email address to contact them on. The address is [email protected]

Do you know what exams your child should be revising for or what and where their next exam is? If you have any doubts or just simply want to double check, then please go over to the school’s website where you can find everything you need to know. Chances are, they won’t ask for your support, but somewhere along this three-week exam path, they are going to need you there by their side, so do be prepared for when they need you.

There has been a big drive on improving the standard of school uniform around school this week, and I am pleased to say we are starting to see some positive improvements, so thank you for all your help. The expec-tation of Year 11 students sitting GCSE exams, is that they will all be wearing full smart uniform please.

Attendance: The month of March saw an improvement in our overall year group attendance again which is always welcoming news and we saw an increase in students getting above the expected 96% mark. Four students pulled themselves out of the danger zone and into the mid tables, so well done those students.

Also excellent news is, 108 of our awesome Year 11 students attended every school day during the month of March so giving themselves the best chance of GCSE success.

Leavers Hoodies: This really is the last call for students to check their order details before Wednesday, as after that, any mistakes will be totally their responsibility. So do please remind students to check be-fore then. Prom tickets are now on sale from Mr Waring, at the great price of just £25. There are a limited number of tickets, so first come first served.

Leaving me to simply wish all our Year 11 students the very best of luck with their GCSE exams. There is a hard road ahead, but with determination.

I hope you all enjoyed the Easter Break and I am pleased to tell you that the Easter Bingo we held raised over £500!! Well done to all those involved and a special ‘Thank You’ to Miss Walters for all her help and continued support.

Year 12 - Wednesday 1st May – Diploma Day

Students were off timetabled lessons and we arranged for Gemma Everett from UEA to deliver a session on “How To Choose Your University”, including what students should take into considera-tion when making their choices and general information. Claire Oxley from Causeway Education demonstrated the Oscar online tool and website. This has been developed in conjunction with Uni-versity Admissions Officers for improving personal statements. All students will be able to access this and hopefully they will find it a useful resource to make the process of applying to university easier and less stressful. Belinda Ladds from Beacon East is an experienced Careers Adviser and she delivered sessions on Applying for Apprenticeships, general information regarding apprentice-ships and careers advice. Belinda has been working with us over the past year and has offered val-uable advice to students during that time.

With students in Year 12 and 13 now beginning to have driving lessons or being newly qualified drivers, we thought this was the ideal time for them to see the Norfolk Fire and Rescue, Police and Ambulance Services #Impact Demonstration. The #Impact Campaign is the initiative of Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Lorne Green, who attended the milestone 50th perfor-mance which has been touring schools and colleges across the county since it was launched two years ago. The #Impact Presentation started with a video of Thomas Semmons, from Scarning near Dereham, who was seriously injured after losing control of his car in bad weather on the B1145 in Norfolk. He spoke emotionally and candidly about his injuries, the effect that it had on himself and especially his family. Thomas was a careful driver, he wasn’t speeding, had not been drinking and was driving on a road that he knew well, but misjudged his speed for the condition of the road that night. His car tours with the campaign – showing the very real impact of what can happen when things go wrong behind the wheel.

Students then had the opportunity to observe a ‘crashed car’ demonstration with volunteers experi-encing what is involved in having emergency services work to free them from a vehicle, as well as facing police questioning and arrest.

Keep an eye out in the press for coverage of the event, photos and a report are on the news page of our website. We hope that Y12 found this both a useful and enjoyable day.

Work Experience

Students will be on Work Experience from 8-12th of July. Hopefully they have been able to arrange this and they should now be providing their tutors with the key contacts for their provider company/organisation, so that tutors can confirm their placements. If they are having difficulties with this they should see Mr White.

Please remind students to check their school emails regularly as any opportunities that come in from various organisations that are beneficial to their studies and future careers are sent to them all.

Assemblies

We recently had 3 of our ex-students in to speak in Assemblies . Holly Myers is now a 5th Year Medical student at UEA, Ilaria Pezzella is a 4th Year student at Loughborough University, study-ing Management, Marketing and Retail and has had a year’s work experience with Johnson & Johnson and Marcus Rasberry who is on a Degree Level Apprenticeship with PriceWater-houseCoopers in Accountancy.

They all spoke about their time in Sixth Form, their personal experiences in making their choic-es and their journeys so far and offered useful advice and encouragement on revision in the run up to exams.

Year 13 Subject Support Sessions

Subject Support Sessions are available every morning during tutor time and students should take advantage of this opportunity to cement their knowledge and get help with anything they are struggling with.

Leavers’ Sweatshirts and Leavers’ Dinner

Please remind students that orders for Leavers’ Sweatshirts need to be in asap, and tickets for the Leaver’s Dinner on 5th July at the Dukes Head are now on sale.

Have a good weekend and enjoy Bank Holiday Monday.
