PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Sara Davey Academy Principal

Even though it’s the last week of term we have still been as busy as ever with a massive array of activities taking place across the Academy.

The weather held off for one of our best Sports Days ever and it was wonderful to be able to welcome over 50 students from the Isles of Scilly to take part in events and join forces with our musicians to keep us entertained throughout the day.

It’s all about you...

HERE COMES THE SUMMER

OUR ISLES OF SCILLY FRIENDS

We then had a fantastic celebration of sporting achievement at our Annual Sports Awards Evening before preparing for an amazing launch of a massive five new albums containing over 50 original songs recorded in our own recording studio by our own record label Qube Records.

We’ve had students adventuring out on the Three Peaks Challenge and taking part in workshops organised by the Institute of Physics and two separate film crews on site working with our students on educational projects that will be available to schools nationwide.

Our week finished with a whole school assembly, which has outgrown our Hall and now takes place in our new Sports Hall.

The assembly is our last chance to fondly remember members of staff who are leaving us for pastures new and a musical celebration that culminates in the presentation of the coveted House Cup, won this year by Blue House.

Don’t forget that our first day back in the Academy is our Student Led Conference and Year 7 Induction Day on Tuesday 5th September, with the whole school returning to a full timetable on Wednesday 6th September.

All that remains now is to wish you all a well earned summer holiday!

And finally...

7 Orange have been busy finalising their sustainability projects and reflecting on everything they have learnt in their first year at the Academy.

Starting with a leaflet which displays their plans many students have already found ways of adapting and improving their ideas in order to make Penwith more sustainable. Students have come up with some brilliant, innovative ideas which many are keen to implement, especially those based around the Academy. Before deciding on a final idea, students developed their own questionnaires with questions tailored to suit their project plans. Some asked; ‘Do you recycle?’, whereas others asked whether or not you own a dishwasher! All results were evaluated and students created pie charts to help represent their results. Their projects are now complete and ready to be displayed alongside their reflections.

One student in 7 Orange spoke about their year in Real Projects and said, “It is fun, interesting, unique and opens up the mind to new creativity - the new Year 7s are going to love it, I’m jealous of them!”.

While most Year 11 students are taking a well earned break after their GCSEs, Maisy-Sky Lumbers has wasted no time in launching her career as a radio presenter.

Maisy-Sky will be hosting her own weekend show on the Cornwall Community and Hospital Broadcasting Network (CHBN), and has been busy training in their state of the art radio studio. Her new two hour show will be called ‘Songs form the Shows’ and will feature music from stage musicals and the movies. Maisy-Sky cut her radio teeth on our own MBA Live station as well as presenting a special one-off ‘Songs From the Shows’ programme on Coast FM.

Hospital radio has always been a traditional training ground and route into the radio and television industry. Many well known national TV and radio personalities have started out in hospital radio including, Scott Mills, Huw Stephens and Chris Moyles (BBC Radio 1), Phillip Schofield (presenter on ‘This Morning’) and Amanda Sergeant (GMTV presenter) to name but a few.

Hospital radio is a fantastic broadcasting environment. The audience, as you can imagine, are truly appreciative of the station’s output and Maisy-Sky will be visiting patients on the wards to ask for requests and have a chat, and she will be supplying a very personal and tailored programme straight to their bedsides.

“I am so excited to start this new adventure with CHBN and would like to thank Miss Fisher, Mr Bird and all the staff at Mounts Bay Academy for all the support they gave me to pursue my dream in radio.”

It was an absolute pleasure to take 6 of our Year 8 students to Goonhilly Earth Station where they took part in a Physics Ambassador Training Day, which was run by the Institute of Physics.

Once we arrived, they were split into different teams with students from other schools, which for most would be daunting, but not our students!

The way they contributed to discussions and handled their responsibilities within the team was incredible to watch. They planned how to give a demonstration showing the effects of space on an astronaut (it involved a doll's head, shaving foam and a vacuum pump!).

They were an absolute credit to themselves and to the school. We are now planning their role next year in delivering similar demonstrations to local primary schools.

BECREATIVE

It’s album launch week at Qube Records.

This year we’ve released over 60 brand new original songs from students, across five

massive albums. “Different Light”, the follow up to last year’s “Time Flies”, features 20 songs from students from Years 7 to 11 and features everything from noisy rock and roll to ambient EDM.

To celebrate the releases we held our annual launch party on Wednesday night, and what a show it was! The gig started with a short set from “Standard Procedure”, and we then showed a short behind the scenes film about the making of this year’s albums. The documentary will be online for you to watch. That was followed by the debut live performance of Anya Burlton’s “You Were Never There” complete with full band and string section led by Emma Eddy.

The rest of the night featured live performances of the entire “Different Light” album, with many of the songs getting their first ever live airing. A real highlight was when Year 7 Rose Hammond was joined by her departing Year 11 brother Danny for a performance of her song “Running”!

Four students are also releasing solo albums this week, and they all showcased their records with sets of a couple of songs. Alice

Thacker was joined by Anya Burlton, Amber Symons and Brody Barden for her set, while Emily Rees was joined by Alice and Emma on violin, and Kate Matthew and Arianna Caddy on vocals for her set.

Record Label Launch

BECREATIVEBE CREATIVE

Demelza Jones has again released a solo album for the second consecutive year, and

the night was rounded out with a storming set from Amber Symons with two songs from her album “Kaleidoscopic Minds”.

Record Label Launch

The night doubled up as our record label awards night, with some very special guests presenting the prizes. Band of the Year went to “Standard Procedure”, with Nat Dwelly from last year’s winners “The Cold Six Hundred” returning to hand over the

award. It was a good night for “Standard Procedure” with drummer Danny Hammond also winning Instrumentalist of the Year, which was presented by Cornwall Live’s Gareth Bartlett, who was busy all night live tweeting the entire show!

We had awards this year for a Music Icon in each Year group, someone who has done something a little bit magic for the record label over the course of the year. The Year 7 award went to Rose Hammond making it a clean sweep for clan Hammond. The Year 8 prize went to tech team legend Ben Skewes, and Year 9 to Senara Rendell for her amazing song “Fearless”, which she wrote in the aftermath of the Manchester terror attack. Year 10 was won by Alice Thacker for her absolutely gorgeous solo

album “Stop The Search”, and Year 11 was taken by Demelza Jones for her second album in two years!

The two big awards were really tough decisions. Song of the Year, presented by Cornwall’s top punk band and Qube Records artists “The Surgeons”, was taken by Renae Caddy for her absolutely stunning song “The Storm,” which she performed last night with full band and string section. It was left to Mrs Davey herself, assisted by last year’s winner Emma Eddy to present the final award, Artist of the Year, and the very deserving winner was Amber Symons.

Well done to everyone who has worked so hard on everything we’ve done this year, and for making it the biggest Qube Records year yet!

Last year we had the first 3 Peaks Expedition, and building on the success of that challenge we have run it again this year. 5am at school last Friday saw six students, Mr Davies and myself loading the bus for a 16-hour trek to Fort William

in Scotland.

BE ADVENTUROUS

Mission Summit - Three Peaks Report by: Mr Raggett

Another 5am start and camp ‘squared away’ for the journey to Cumbria.  The mountains were kinder to us in the Lake District and we were on the summit of Scafell

by 6pm.

By now we were into a routine and 5am the following day came around very quickly!  Back on the M6 towards Wales and heading towards Llanberis.  A repeat of last year saw very hot conditions on Snowdon and the summit was achieved by 5pm and 28 very happy team members.

This year saw numbers increase with the Mounts Bay students joined by twelve Year 5 and Year 6 students from Trevithick Learning Academy and three students

from The Five Islands School. Arriving in Fort William we set up camp and prepared for the following day’s ascent. The morning arrived with horrendous conditions but despite this all were in good spirits.  The weather did not relent and neither did the high morale.  We arrived on the summit, quick photos were taken and a rapid descent was made to find the dryers and prepare for the next stage of the challenge.

A massive effort by all involved, which included 25 miles of walking, 11,000 feet of ascent and no blisters.  Well done to Frank Davies and Jenny

Dash from Year 10 and Ella Lazic, Holly Connor, Iris Rainbow and Anna Baker from Year 9.  A big thanks must also go to Mr Davies who shared the driving with me: 1,500 miles in five days.

Plans are already underway for 3 Peaks 2018!

If you would like to keep up with all the action from Canada, you can catch Abigail’s events by clicking on the links on their website.

http://worlddwarfgames2017.org

Abigail’s summer sporting activities do not end in Canada however, at the end of August she will be travelling up to

Bedford to take part in the England Athletics and National Championships in javelin, discus and shot put.

“I am nervous because there are only 77 in the GB team and I don’t know any of the athletes from the 16 other countries taking part. I

am looking forward, however, to getting to know them and making some new international friends.

I want to thank everyone who has helped me with my fundraising efforts - you have made this possible. Also, I

would like to thank staff and students at MBA for supporting me.”

Good luck to Abigail Birch, who is heading off to represent her country at the World Dwarf Games in Guelph in Canada in August. Abigail, who flies out to Canada on the 2nd August, will compete in a wide range of events: On the track she will be taking part

in the 100m and 100m relay; she will compete in the javelin, discus and shot put (her favourite events) in the field and will also take part in team sports including basketball, hockey and volleyball. There’s also the possibility that she will try her hand at weight-lifting while she’s out there!

Tuesday’s Sports Day took place on one of the hottest and most humid days of the year. Despite the heat, students really rose to the challenge and performed with real enthusiasm and skill across the wide range of different sports on offer. Everybody took part in at least one activity, and when not competing supported their fellow students with gusto. Well done to Orange House who managed to win the Sports Day, although it was a very close contest.

This year it was made even more special as we were joined by students from the Five Islands School, who took part in sporting and musical activities as well as integrating with MBA students.
