PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Sara Davey Academy Principal

Another aspect the British Council paid tribute to was the breadth of our fabulous Challenge Week activities and I can’t wait to see what promises to be our best one ever next week. May I remind all students that, whilst we relax the school dress code to make allowances for the activities, they should still dress smartly and appropriately with no hoodies or clothing that exposes the midriff.

REAL Students Present Their BooksChallenge Week

It’s all about you...

After an extremely busy and successful last few weeks the Academy returned to a slightly more normal pace when the students returned on Tuesday this week after their well deserved long weekend break. This was because the teaching team here at Mounts Bay got together on Monday for a series of presentations and activities organised by our Teaching School, Applied Minds, to help us continue to provide you with “world class learning on your doorstep”.

As a world class school I am pleased to say that we have once again been awarded the International School Award by the British Council in recognition of our ongoing international work.

This globally recognised accreditation helps us to enrich learning and improve teaching by guiding our international learning activities, from introducing international education into the curriculum to embedding it within our Academy’s culture. It gives our young people a window into different cultures and countries, helping them develop as responsible global citizens and preparing them for life and work in a global society. In awarding the accreditation the British Council said: "In its excellent Impact Evaluation, Mounts Bay Academy acknowledges that an international approach to learning is ‘crucial’ to its success, and offers high value experiences and opportunities that impact significantly on the whole establishment through the delivery of learning.”

Click here to read the full accreditation award letter on our website.

The council also paid tribute to our Adventure Learning curriculum which challenges our students to take their learning outside of the classroom, both in the way they are taught and the way we present our work. A great example of this was shown again this week when we had an amazing book launch at the Tinner’s Arms for our REAL Projects students.

World Class Learning

And finally, we have a marvelous evening to look forward to tonight when we have our annual Year 11 Ball. It is always an enjoyable (and emotional) experience. Look on the website and in the newsletter for a full report next week.

We’re Having A Ball

BE YOUR BEST

Ella Lazic, Year 9, has produced an absolutely stunning storyboard in

English of the dystopian novel '1984', written by George Orwell. It captures the dark tone of this famous narrative.

The storyboard beautifully depicts the structure of the plot and is accompanied by well-expressed captions that provide additional information.

Yet again, Ella's artwork and attention to detail is highly impressive. Her pictorial creation will be used as a model for Year 9 classes in the future

At the end of April, Year 7 and Year 8 took part in the individual UKMT Junior Challenge. The Junior Maths Challenge encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. It is aimed at students in Year 7 and 8 and we have had plenty of success in Year 8 with seven students achieving Bronze certificates. Matthew Hendy also claimed the Best in Year certificate.

The Year 7 students have taken on this challenge and come out with some great results. We have six students achieving Bronze, four students achieving Silver and three achieving Gold. For Ziji Lee, Gold was only the starting point - he also won Best in Year and Best in School, and was invited to participate in the Junior Kangaroo competition early last month. Those results are in and Ziji, yet again, has smashed it. He achieved a score in the top 25% and will collect his Merit certificate later this month. What a huge achievement from our budding mathematicians. Well done everyone!

This year, Mounts Bay Academy has added Oracy to the Year 7 curriculum.Throughout the programme, students have been working on the fluency of their speech, their pronunciation, projection, tone and pace. The intention is also to increase confidence both on a personal level as well as in presentations. This is evident in all students who initially were reluctant to give presentations in front of their peers, but are all now happy to speak individually for up to two minutes.

They have taken part in debates, discussed and presented poetry, given quick fire presentations and refined and rehearsed more in-depth presentations.

Alongside this, they complete tongue twisters every lesson to improve their elocution.

All students have progressed from bronze to either silver or silver with elements of gold in all areas that we assess. It has been amazing to watch these wallflowers flourish into confident performers.

On Wednesday night there was a very special gathering at The Tinner's Arms in Zennor. Year 7 students, parents and teachers gathered to

celebrate the launch of the REAL Project books made by the whole of the year group. St Ives, Pendeen, Mousehole and St Michael's Mount were the featured locations in the answering of the essential question, 'How do we capture the spirit of a place?' Celebrating the books in such a stunning location was another reminder of how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the world that is so full of interesting history, a message each of the four books conveys.

A message to Year 7 from Michael Morpurgo

“To you all at Mounts Bay Academy, Penzance. Bravo all you Year Sevens!

Love Michael Morpurgo”

During the evening our students read examples of their poetry. Everyone was blown away with their mature and insightful creative writing, and commented on how expressive their

artwork was. Not only was the work fantastic, Mr Bromfield had also made delicious canapés and Miss Walters had prepared cream teas. Everyone really enjoyed the food!

Xenios Jenkins from 7 Cool was at the book launch and read his poem in front of the crowd. Here he reflects on the experience of making the books.

‘The whole year group created a book to present our answer to the essential question 'How do we capture the spirit of a place?’ My tutor group and 7 Orange were

given the location of  St Ives to base our book on. We visited St Ives which was really fun! We took pictures there and edited them on our iPads. We wrote about how beautiful the sea-side town made us feel. After this, we chose a picture we took and painted paintings that featured in the book.

In Year 7 the whole year group produced a book, working as two tutor groups per book. All students had a double page spread of their choice, featuring their paintings and creative writing.

The book launch was really special because we got to celebrate all of our hard work. It was a great opportunity to make the book because it made our work feel valued. It was great to have an outcome for our work; the whole year group feels proud.’

Well done Year 7, Wednesday was a perfect way of celebrating your hard work, but also the creative, fun and exciting year we have had engaging with REAL Projects.

On Wednesday, myself and 14 other Year 10 students went to Truro College to take part in a Languages Day. There was a range of activities involving translating, interpreting and researching - all in our chosen language. The day began with a talk in the main hall

from some students who had studied languages at A Level and their travels, as well as a presentation from the University Of Exeter. We then split into our groups based on which language we did and participated in some activities based on how we could use language skills in future jobs. One activity involved researching information for a new project all in French, another involved translating an email into English for our colleagues who could not understand French. Before lunch, we did some interpreting which was a bit challenging and our final activity was creating a poster in French to advertise our new project and attract a French audience.

Finally, there was a talk from some current ‘A’ Level Language students who explained their experience with languages in college and why they chose it. The day was extremely informative, and really gave me an insight as to where I could go with languages and where it could lead me in the future.

Congratulations to 7 Blue who have won the Accelerated Tutor Cup for the third month, making them the overall winners for the Year. 7 Blue have four Word Millionaires in the class: Faye-Louann Jacka, Xander Linder, Leah Powell and Samuel

Treleven. Myrtle Ratcliffe and Anna Brockman were over half way there and every single member of the group participated in the overall success of 7 Blue by reading and quizzing regularly.

When students began at Mounts Bay they took a STAR test (Standardised Test for the Assessment of Reading). At the end of the academic year they took the test again. 7 Blue have seen excellent results in improving reading ages by being so involved with the programme. Megan Gardiner, who has read ten novels, saw her reading age increase by two years and three months. Kylo Mayes, who has quizzed successfully on thirty fiction and non-fiction texts, has seen his reading age increase by two years and

five months. Reece Scothern, who has passed fourteen accelerated reader quizzes, has increased has reading age by one year and seven months. Ziggy Morgan, who has successfully quizzed on thirty of our library books, has increased his reading age by one year and nine months. Jowan Garcia, has passed 34 reading quizzes on books he has enjoyed, and has increased his reading age by one year and eleven months.

Well done to 7 Blue and their tutor Miss McKenzie, who has been brilliant at keeping them on track, celebrating their success and sending them back and forth regularly to the library during tutor time to keep swapping their reading books.

Tegen Campbell, of 7 Cool, and Polly Moon-Rainbow, of 7 Warm, are our newest Word Millionaires. Tegen really enjoyed reading ‘One’ by Sarah Crossan, which is a very popular book with our students. I have mentioned it before in the newsletter, but in case you missed it: ‘One’ tells the story of Grace and Tippi, conjoined twins, who reach the age of wanting to be independent, have their own friends and think about falling in love. They face a heart-wrenching decision in their quest for independence. This is one that might make you cry - it did me. If you haven't tried it yet and you think it might appeal to you, then do come in and borrow a copy.

Tegen has also loved the ‘Geek Girl’ series by Holly Smale and has passed quizzes on ‘Geek Girl’, ‘All that Glitters’ and ‘All Wrapped Up’. David Walliams's ‘Gangsta Granny’, ‘Billionaire Boy’, ‘Grandpa's Great Escape’, ‘The World's Worst Children’ and ‘The Midnight Gang’ are books that Tegen has enjoyed reading this year.

Polly has enjoyed reading ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Catching Fire’, by Suzanne Collins, ‘Rat Burger’ and ‘Blob’ by David Walliams and ‘Little Stars’ and ‘Diamond’ by Jacqueline Wilson.

We have a great selection of David Walliams, Holly Smale and Sarah Crossan books in the library so if you are a quick reader and want to read one before we break up, do pop in and sign one out. Remember to get all library books back in our last week of term, ready for a fresh start in the next academic year.

MBA's Surf Club enjoyed their best session of the summer season yet at Gwithian on Tuesday (4th of July) when they were lucky enough to enjoy both sun and good surf.

Enjoying the warm water and mellow waves were:

Leah Ball, Louis Firth, Neda Ladygaite, Zelah Morgan, Tia Murray-Lambrou, Eseld O'Neill, Sam Pryke, Polly Rainbow, Sidney Rainbow, Finlay Hanson (on his new board), Ben Ridge and Jake Seaton. In the photo but hiding behind his surfboard, is Andre Green. Surf Club regulars, not present for the photo, are Georgia Haffenden, Mark Heims and Archie Davey.

Everyone is looking forward to welcoming Archie back in the Autumn, after he has, hopefully, recovered from his broken collar bone.

Sam Perkin won the Liskeard Triathlon in the 13-14 year old age group last weekend. This gives him two wins in the county mini series, at Helston and Liskeard, and one second place at Wadebridge.

Two more events have been added to the series and Sam will have a go at the Penzance Jubilee venue. They are great events and if you've never had a go at a triathlon, what better chance to have a go than when it's being held at Penzance on 10th September.

Last weekend Neil Eddy was in action in the Outlaw Half Holkham Triathlon. Neil, competingin the Elite Men category, came in an impressive second place very close behind the winner. Neil said: “The top three in the swim went the wrong way, with the sun in our eyes and no leading canoe. This may not have affected the overall outcome as I worked hard on my bike and run. Overall I lost by just 50 seconds!”

This week’s word is: Summer

Definition: Summer: the warmest season of the year, in the northern hemisphere from June to August and in the southern hemisphere from December to February.

Etymology: “Summer” came from the Old English name for the season “sumor”, which in turn came from the Proto-Germanic *sumur-, which itself came from the Proto-Indo-European root *sam-, meaning summer. *sam- seems to be a variant of the Proto-Indo-European *sem- meaning “together / one.”
