U of M students to host Agriculture Awareness Day, April 17

American agriculture continues to provide many of the necessities of everyday life, including food, ber, clothing and fuel. Agricultural education stu-dents at the University of Minnesota will share that message with fellow students, faculty, staff and the general public during the third annual Agriculture Awareness Day, Tuesday, April 17. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Church Street, in the heart of the universitys East Bank in Minneapolis. Organized under the leadership of students in the University of Minnesota Agricultural Education Club, the goal of the event is to increase awareness of how food, ber and renewable resource products are produced and showcase the critical role Ameri-can agriculture plays in maintaining a strong econo-my, especially as the world population continues to grow. A broad range of Minnesota agricultural pro-ducers, associations, corporations and government agencies are joining the students in this effort. Attendees will have the chance to visit with Ag-ricultural Education Club members and ask ques-tions of industry experts while learning more about various aspects of the agriculture industry. The event will also feature interactive booths and the chance for people to see dairy cows, beef cattle (both steer and heifer), pigs, llamas, lambs and sheep. Student organizers invite you to learn more about agriculture by visiting the Agriculture Aware-ness Day Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/AgAwareness. The following organizations are scheduled to participate in Agriculture Awareness Day: the U of M College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Re-source Sciences; Minnesota Department of Agri-culture; Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI); Minnesota Agricultural Water Resource Center (MAWRC); Minnesota Beef Council; Min-nesota Buffalo Association; U of M Department of Chicano Studies; Minnesota Corn Growers; Mid-west Dairy Association; Minnesota Farm Bureau; Minnesota Farmers Union; Minnesota Pork Board; Minnesota Soybean; U of M Institute for Sustain-able Agriculture (MISA); Minnesota Turkey; and the U of M Extensions Minnesota 4-H. Student organizers also wish to thank major sponsors Coca-Cola and the CHS Foundation for their support.

SDSU Extension Arti cial Insemination School, April 25-27

Arti cial Insemination (AI) is a valuable tool available to cow/calf producers. To teach commer-cial cow/calf producers how to utilize this tool, SDSU Extension is sponsoring an AI School April 25 to 27 at 1 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Regional Live-stock facility near Worthing, S.D. with additional classroom time at the Sioux Falls Regional Exten-sion Center. A stumbling block thats prevented the wider use of AI technology among commercial cow/calf producers has been producers simply not knowing how to AI cows and a general unfamiliarity with how AI and synchronization works, said Warren Rusche, SDSU Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialist. The AI School will include both classroom instruc-tion as well as hands-on training that will cover the basics of AI and practice reproductive tracts. One of the unique things about this school is that well spend a lot of time talking about cowherd manage-ment, ways to optimize reproductive ef ciency and steps producers can take to improve reproductive performance whether they are using AI or natural service, Rusche said. To ensure producers receive plenty of hands on time, the class is limited to 20 participants. Registra-tion is $325 and covers costs of materials and cows to practice on. To register, contact Carol Kleinjan at the SDSU Animal Science Department, [email protected] or 605-688-5165). Dont wait to register as the class is expected to reach its limit soon. There will be a waiting list for future classes.
