Returning for its third exciting instalment, The Yorkshire Medieval Festival is coming to take God’s own County back to the middle ages this summer. Organised by The JORVIK Group, creators of the famous JORVIK Viking Festival, The Yorkshire Medieval Festival brings with it a wide range of events and activities for all the family to enjoy. Try your hand as an eagle-eyed archer, discover mighty birds of prey with falconry demonstrations, see brave knights battle in thrilling re-enactments and spend the day in some of Yorkshire’s most idyllic settings.

St Helen and Holy Cross, Sheriff Hutton Saturday 2nd August14:00 - 16:00 | FREEGuided walks trace the history of this fascinating building, set in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. With its intimate links to the Neville family and Richard III, whose son is reputed to be buried here St Helen’s is steeped in medieval history. Also discover the monuments associated with the Thweng family, who are linked to William Snawsell of Barley Hall in York through his marriage to Joan Thweng.

Medieval Craft & Mystery TourTuesday 5th August2.30pm | Start from the Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar£4 adult, £3 conc. By the late fourteenth century the celebration of the feast of Corpus Christi in York had developed into a series of religious pageants acted out by the guilds of York and drawn around the city on carts. An annual event for almost 200 years, these plays became the basis for the modern mystery plays. Join York Archaeological Trust’s Small Finds Expert and author Nicky Rogers to follow the same route taken by the wagons over 600 years ago. Sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing recommended. Upgrade your ticket on the day for £5 for a copy of Nicky’s book Medieval Craft and Mystery and access to the Henry VII experience at Micklegate Bar, where you’ll see a collection of medieval finds excavated in York over the last 40 years.

Join them as they recreate the sights, sounds and smells of Snawsell’s Barley Hall. With opportunities to meet characters, see demonstrations and take part in activities, this is a rare glimpse of social history brought to life in a fantastic setting.

From Richard to Henry: “That noble House of Yorke…”Wednesday 6th August14:30 | Start from the Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar£4 adult, £3 conc. Join us for a stroll around part of York’s medieval defences; starting at the new Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar and finishing at its partner attraction, The Richard III Experience at Monk Bar. The walk will use the views from these ancient fortifications to retell the stories and events that took place in York during the turbulent times of our history known as the Wars of the Roses.

St John the Baptist, HealaughWednesday 6th August18:30 | FREE (donations to the church welcomed)Ramble through the historic landscape around the twelfth-century church, nestled in the Yorkshire Dales and hear how hermits, Austin canons and crusaders all left their mark on this corner of Yorkshire, as well as how Healaugh played a key part in an act of rebellion against the notorious Henry VIII. Please be advised that this walk lasts for around two hours, crossing rough, uneven ground, and will involve walking on some road verges. Join us on a guided walk of the Bishophill area (departing from the church) to hear about its history in medieval York.Please be advised that this walk lasts for around one hour, and will involve walking on uneven surfaces and crossing some roads. Lacerations & Perforations: The Physical Effects of Sharp Force TraumaMonday 18th August18:30 | York Mansion House | £4 adult, £3 concThis lecture will explore the notion that we should consider human anatomy whilst looking at medieval combat in an effort to fully understand the damage sharp weapons would have when people are facing one another in earnest combat. Examining various cases of modern day sharp force injuries and deaths and exploring the force needed to actually damage various areas of the body this lecture will provide food for thought and will help emphasise what injuries would cause a minor cut and which would cause mortal wounds. Please Note: This Lecture will include graphic images of fatal injuries and is not advised for those with a nervous disposition or the very young.

His nickname was bestowed upon him as a tribute to his speed a readiness to attack in battle. This lecture will look at the exploits of Hotspur throughout his life, examining his personal victories, defeats, experiences on campaign and his tactics, presenting him as a paradigm of a medieval English Knight.

In a film or television programme a choreographed fight should tell a story but this lecture will demonstrate how depictions of fight scenes can often result in various misconceptions and misunderstandings about the realities of historical combat. Looking at various examples from the film and television we will examine what is done well, what is done poorly, and suggesting what could be done to improve.
