TARGET AUDIENCE Advanced Practice Nurses, Physician’s Assistants, Pharmacists, Physicians, and other health care professionals who are seeking updated information for practice specific to the provider role in caring for pediatric and young adult populations in primary, ambulatory, urgent and acute care settings.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONThis conference will provide clinical updates in evidence-based care for a variety of diagnoses for advanced practice providers. In addition, many of the presentations integrate pharmacy content presented by expert clinical pharmacists. Professional issues related to practice will also be addressed. Day one offers plenary sessions in the morning with four breakout session options in the afternoon. Day two includes plenary sessions with a Closing Keynote address during lunch to conclude the conference.
OBJECTIVESUpon completion of this conference, participants should be able to:
• Describe provisions of the affordable care act that will impact
health care providers beginning in 2013.
• Enhance skills for recognition and pharmaceutical management
of common skin rashes seen in children in urgent/emergent
care settings.
• Recognize the characteristics of different seizure types
and common epilepsy diagnoses; and review indications,
pharmacokinetics and side-effects of selected antiepileptic drugs.
• Discuss approaches to preventing cardiovascular disease by
understanding the identification and treatment of risk factors
as they appear in young individuals.
• Using patient specific information such as age, BMI, and
renal and nutritional status, enhance your ability to prescribe
appropriately for obese pediatric patients.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the effective dose of
radiation and the indications for ordering various imaging
studies to guide clinical decision making.
• Identify young athletes with potential risk factors: sickle cell
trait, female athlete triad/nutritional issues, cardiac conditions,
or concerning family histories; and appropriate methods for
screening and providing anticipatory guidance.
• Review guidelines for evaluation of school-age and adolescent
athletes who have sustained a concussion during sports
participation, and clearance for safe return to play.
• Accurately recognize signs of ASD and know when/where to
refer for intervention, and provide parents with accurate and
supportive information.
• Support breastfeeding through appropriate triage,
management and follow-up of common, yet challenging issues
for mothers who breastfeed.
• Outline the steps needed to verify the appropriateness of
the drug, dosage, formulation, patient instructions and drug
information resources for pediatric prescriptions.
• Reduce the rate of medication errors and improve knowledge
of safety in off-label use of medications in pediatric patients.
• Review evidence-based guidelines for diagnosis,
antimicrobial regimen choice, and monitoring in community
acquired pneumonia.
• Describe findings associated with inborn errors of metabolism,
and methods for early recognition and treatment.
• Identify risk factors, consequences of tobacco use and
exposure to second hand smoke and appropriate methods for
patient education.
• Discuss the opportunities for improved patient outcomes and
provider satisfaction through enhanced knowledge of team roles
and processes in the current complex health care environment.
CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITNursing: The University Of Colorado College Of Nursing Office of Lifelong Learning is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Colorado Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
This offering for a total of 11.5 contact hours (7.25 on 4/29 & 4.25 on 4/30) is provided by the College of Nursing. Pharmacology specific content will be calculated and reflected on the contact hour certificate.
Medical: Children’s Hospital Colorado is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Children’s Hospital Colorado designates this live activity for a maximum of 11.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s).™

Pharmacy: The University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This conference provides 6.25 contact hours of knowledge-based education and 2.0 contact hours of application-based education (workshop). To receive CPE credit, participants must submit a completed statement of attendance and complete evaluations. CE statements will be distributed within 6 weeks.
NAPNAP: NAPNAP approved credit will be provided by the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners.

CANCELLATION POLICYOnline refunds may be processed through April 19, 2013 minus a cancellation fee of $50.00. No refunds will be granted after this date, although you may send a substitute. The Planning Committee reserves the right to modify the agenda or cancel the conference in the event of an unforeseen circumstance, or if minimum acceptable registration is not attained by April 19, 2013 with a full refund to participants.
