BRAVE Journey: Daniel

We can be brave like Daniel.

First 10 minutes of the service hour: Engage kids in cooperative play activities to help them connect to other kids Next 5 minutes: Connect Time Next 25 minutes: Large Group Last 25 minutes: Snack and Small Group

Welcome new kids to the room by laying out Play Dough to entice them! It’s something fun to distract them while their parents leave. Getting out some blank paper and markers is also a great way to connect kids right off the bat. Just make sure you color along with them, and ask them about their drawing!

Ask kids what they’re going to look for with their telescope!

Daniel was brave over and over again and lived a life marked by bravery. Our lives can be marked by bravery too, especially if we’re on the lookout for opportunities that God gives us to be brave.

GOAL: Connect time is all about engaging kids in a short, interactive game to prepare them for Large Group.

• Clean up! (10 minutes after the service start time, when you get the 5-minute warning from the presenter)

• Line up. • Tell kids that we’re going to act out some brave things that people do! • Guide kids in pretending to be the following:

o A firefighter (Let’s pretend we have a big hose, and we’re putting out a fire!)

o A construction worker (Let’s pretend like we’re way up high, building a tall building!)

o A sick person (Let’s pretend like we don’t feel good and we’re cuddled up in our bed.)

o A ballerina (Dancers have to be brave by going on a stage in front of lots of people! Let’s practice some dance moves.)

o A kid (Let’s pretend like we’re playing and we have to cross a big creek full of water!)

o A doctor (Doctors are brave by helping save people’s lives, and making them feel better! Let’s all pretend to put a band aid on a friend.)

o Who else can be brave? (Have kids come up with people they think are brave!)

As you walk into Large Group, encourage kids to put on their listening ears! Remind them that HOPS will be showing us how we should act in Large Group, so we have to listen!

Goal: Kids will (1) recognize that Daniel lived a life of bravery and (2) understand that, if we look for them, we all have opportunities to be brave. Why? Daniel was brave throughout his life, and preschoolers can start a brave life right now, even at only 3 or 4 years old! Tip: Look for ways that kids can be brave within Kids’ Club today! Maybe they’re afraid to play with a new friend, or of going potty. Encourage them and help them remember that God makes us brave.

REVIEW THE STORY 1. How were Daniel and his friends brave? (Show a paper with the images from

Large Group and help them remember the specific ways Daniel was brave.) a. Daniel left home (He was brave and went to work for the new king far away.) b. Daniel asked the king for just vegetables and water instead of meat. (Daniel

was brave by eating what God wanted him to eat, not what everybody else was eating.)

c. Daniel asked God to tell him what his dreams meant! (Daniel was brave by asking God to help him.)

d. Daniel’s friends did not bow and went into furnace, but God kept them safe. (They were brave by refusing to bow to a statue; they would only bow to God.)

e. Daniel prayed but got thrown into the lions’ den; then God kept him safe. (Daniel had to be brave and pray even though there were lions right next to him!)

MAKE IT PERSONAL

• Say: Sometimes things happen to us and we have to be brave. But sometimes, we have to go out and look for brave things to do!

• Give each kid a colored piece of cardstock, 3 star stickers and markers. • Tell kids that we’re going to make a telescope! It will help us look for brave things to

do this week. • Let kids decorate their paper first. Then go around the room and help kids tape their

paper into a cylinder shape, to make a telescope! Make sure to demonstrate how it works!

Extra time? Let kids do a coloring page. After that, have kids play I Spy with their telescopes!

The Large Group lesson is a little longer than normal. Daniel had a long, brave life, so we’re taking time to look at all the ways he was brave!

We’ve been talking about bravery a lot, but repetition is important for kids this age! Hopefully by seeing a new example of a brave Bible character each week, they’ll recognize bravery in lot of different forms, and practice it in their own ways.

*Click to play intro music. Hi Friends! Welcome to Kids’ Club. I'm _______________ and I'm really glad you're here today. Before we get started, I want you to meet my friend HOPS. Video: HOPS Have fun! (Holding up the Bible for kids to see) This is God’s story. Out of all the stories in the world, this story is the most important. Do you know what it’s called? (Let kids respond “the Bible.”) That’s right, the Bible! It’s God’s Rescue plan. This book shows us how he rescued us from all the wrong things in the world. In the beginning, God made the whole world and everything in it. He created the sun and the moon, the water and the land, the plants and the animals, and people like you and me! Everything was good. Give me a big thumbs up! (Let kids respond. Then change your tone.) But THEN, something bad happened. Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and all the wrong things came into the world. Things like sadness and death. Show me your sad face. (Let kids respond.) Even though Adam and Eve disobeyed God, God loved them anyway! He planned a great rescue so that Adam and Eve—and you and me—could be close to God again! Do you know who the Rescuer is? (Let kids say: Jesus!) That’s right! Jesus! INTRO: DANIEL Today we’re talking about how we can be BRAVE. Being brave means that we do things that are hard, or scary, but God helps us get through them, even when we’re afraid! Can you be brave? (Point at a kid and let them respond.) Can you be brave? (Point at another kid and let

them respond.) Can we ALL be brave? (Let kids respond.) That’s right! We can all show bravery. There’s a guy from the Bible who was very brave, and his name was Daniel. (Click to show image of Daniel.) Can you say, “Daniel”? (Let kids respond.) Good job. Daniel was part of God’s special family, and he loved God very much. But one day, a new king came and took over his city. Can you give me a sad face? (Let kid respond.) This king did not love God like Daniel did. This new king needed people to work for him at his big, fancy palace. And guess what? He wanted Daniel to work for him! That means that Daniel had to leave his home, and his family and his friends. Would you all feel sad or scared if you had to do that? (Let kids respond.) Well guess what? Even though Daniel had to move away, he was brave and followed God, even while working for this mean king. Do you think that was brave? (Let kids respond.) Let’s watch a video to see all the ways Daniel and his friends were brave! Video: God’s Story / Daniel What a story! Do you all think Daniel was brave? (Let kids respond.) Yep, me too. Let’s check out all the things he did! DANIEL WAS BRAVE Let’s go back and try to remember all the ways that Daniel was brave. Wow, Daniel led a very brave life! There were lots of times when he could have been scared, or he could have done the easy thing that everybody else was doing. But instead, he went and looked for ways to be brave! WE CAN BE BRAVE LIKE DANIEL Can we live a brave life, just like Daniel did? (Let kids respond.) Yes! There are lots of brave things we can do. Can we…pray to God when we’re afraid of the having a bad dream? (Let

kids respond.) Yes! Can we….tell our parents if we did something wrong, if even if we’re afraid to do it? (Let kids respond.) Yes! Can we….talk to somebody who’s sad, and help them feel happy? (Let kids respond.) Yes! Daniel didn’t just stay at home and wait for brave things to happen though. He went out into the world, followed God, and LOOKED for brave things to do! And guess what? We can go look for brave things to do to. We just have to ask God for help! Let’s pray and ask him to help us be brave right now. PRAY(Pray, breaking it into small, repeatable phrases.) Dear God. We want to be brave. Please help us do brave things, even if we’re afraid. We love you. Aaaa-men! WORSHIP There’s a way we can be brave right now…we can sing out loud and tell God how much we love him! Let’s do it right now. Everybody stand up, and get ready to worship.
