FROM CRADLE TO CRADLE; BUILDING FOR RESPONSIBLE
CONSUMPTION
From Cradle to Cradle
Principles • Waste equals Food • There is no away • Diversity is key • Design for closed loops systems (biological and technical) • No externalized costs • Use of solar energy • Social equity
Bamboo Kiosk Design to ImplementaWon
Site Plan
Design Concept
The design uses the poles to provide for a suspended structure that would liX it off the ground, minimizing ground contact as deterrent to insect a[ack while using the bamboo for its tensile strength.

Bamboo Kiosk Design Design Exercise
Design Brief
Design a space that can used as a knock down structure of 8-‐10 m2 that can be used as a “Street fruit and vegetable stand” with provision for display, place for the vendor to rest during the slow hours and storage of his / her tools and consumables. He / she should be able to lock it up at the end of the business day and leave, so it should be vermin and vandal proof.
Design Brief
There is should be designated waste bins for the vendor to dispose the cufngs and spoilage. As the kiosk will funcWon in the evenings to tap into the evening shoppers on the way back from work, it should have a provision for lighWng using renewable source.
Design Brief
It should be designed to be mounted on a side walk without need for foundaWons and it should be able to allow the purchaser to be sheltered from the rain while purchasing the fruits and vegetables.

CONSUMPTIONS
.Minifridge: 60W, 12h, 720 Wh/day .Fan: 60W, 16h, 960 Wh/day
.Low consumpWon lamp: 40W, 6h, 240Wh/day
TOTAL CONSUMPTION: 2,640
Daylight consumpWon peak: 120W (no lamp)
Night consumpWon peak: 100 W (no fridge)
PV panel thin layer power peak
producWon: 80Wp 2 panels: 160 Wp
SATISFY DAYLIGHT CONSUMPTION PEAK Panel dimension: 120cm x 160cm each
Energy storage during daylight:
160W produced -‐ 120W consumed = 40W stocked every hour
40W x 12h = 480Wh stocked every day
for the night consumpWon
Night consumpWons: . Lamp for 6h → 240Wh . Fan for 4h → 240Wh
Total: 480Wh
ALL THE ENERGY DEMAND IS SUPPLIED BY THE 2 PV PANELS AND BY A 500 W BATTERY (NEESSARY TO STORE THE SURPLUS DAYLIGHT ENERGY AND USE IT AT NIGHT)
FUNCTIONS
1. Solar panels 2. Shed
3. Trash segregation - Spoilage 4. Cutting 5. Selling
7. Washing 8. Storage 9. Eating
10. Circulation passage / Foldable

Concept 3: FREGGIE KIOSK
Concept 3: FREGGIE KIOSK The vegetable and fruit kiosk is a bamboo structure. It is so designed that it could be locked in place or could be dismantled and transferred. The structure establishes simplicity in design depending upon the space constraints and structural stability.
The form and structure has been conceived keeping in mind that the kiosk is to be mounted on a side wall without disturbing the pedestrian traffic. There is proper provision for display and storage. The vender can rest during slow hours on a hanging can bed that is supported on main structural members. The LED light lamps are used for lighting purpose for which solar cells are used.
The side walls are detachable cane panels. Proposal of telescopic bamboo members used in the beams for the ease of transportation.

DESIGN EVOLUTION
• The design started of by making iniWal sketches of possible structures to the design problem.
• Points considered during the brain storming were – Movability and possibility to dismantle – Storage spaces – Sleeping / resWng space – Feasibility of the structure
Pedestrian footpath of 2.5 m was assumed. On the basis of which the basic outer dimensions of the kiosk was obtained. As seen in the schemaWc secWon.
• The kiosk has 6 major 4 inch verWcal bamboo members which support the remaining 4 inclined members.
• All joints are bolted for the ease of dismantling and rebuilding by the vendor.
